Is there any way to set the backlight to our capacitive keys to stay off? If it helps, I am rooted.

That or screen filter which requires less setup. That's coming from someone who bought lux
Screen filter doesn't work, lux creates issues.
Capacitive Buttons app from the play store works.

I use Darker and don't have any issues. Free version works perfectly.

Haha this is beyond funny. I'm using screen filter now with no captivate button lights. Please explain how that is not directly related to me downloading and installing screen filter?

What issues had lux created for you, I have been using it for months without any issues with the capacitive backlights.
The thing is I don't want it to affect my screen in any way. Only the capacitive buttons on the bottom. The reason I ask is because when viewing apps in Google cardboard, I can see the capacitive buttons to the right which takes away from the immersion. I tried the capacitive buttons app bqw suggested, but it didn't work.

Use darker, set it to 100% but check of turn of capacitive backlight.
In gravity box there is an option to do exactly what you are asking. It is under display tweaks at the bottom called button backlight mode.

Did you launch the Capacitive Buttons app and tap the top darked out sun icon?
My capacitive buttons instantly turn dark. The bottom app icon to turn them back on doesn't work though and I receive a Kernal error selecting the center icon (half brightness I assume). The buttons light back up after reboot.

I tried, but for some reason the lights would turn back on when I launched certain apps. Thanks for the suggestion though. Gravity box ended up fixing it for me.

Hi,
is there any way to configure the hw buttons backlight behaviour? In WinMo there was a little app called Keypad LED Backlight, which kept the HW buttons backlid as long as the display was on. I like that behaviour very much, especially when you are using your phone at night.
Right now the hw buttons backlight turn off after a certain time, even when the screen is still on.
Are there any apps or mods to configure the backlight behavious?
thanks
boba
I looking for this as well.I've tried some things but nothing seems to work.

what i noticed is when u r using the touch screen then y do the touch key light up, arent they suppose to light up when u actually press them, the menu and back touch key?
problem is when ur playing games etc ur using the main touch screen only and this results in both the keys to remain lit up all the while, i want it to light up only when pressed.
mm, I agree it is very annoying while playing games and probably doesn't help the battery :/

i even searched for apps to disable it etc but didnt find any, mayb it needs to be done at the kernel level.
Go to settings - display - touch key light duration - allways off (They won't light up even when you use them)

I thought the reason the lights on the menu and back button turns up when the screen is touched, is to tell the user that there's a back and menu button. (Good for people new to android, who does not know of the capacitive buttons)
And why do you want the menu and back button to light up when touched? You already know that they are there (that's why you touched it).
I've permanently turned off my touch button's lights as I've already knew where they are.
When I'm streaming movies from Amazon, the soft buttons on the bottom of the screen constantly stay lit. Does everyone else's do this? Is there a way to turn the lights off?
I guess the Amazon app for videos does not have the necessary code to do that... it's a problem with the app....

I'm not using an app. I'm using Boat Browser to go to the site. I even went back to stock and relocked to see if that may be affecting it. No change. And I notice they never go off even if I'm doing nothing but looking at the homescreen. Do yours go off?
Well, the Nexus 10 Guidebook answered one question. They are supposed to go off like I thought.
After a short time without getting used, these buttons may shrink to dots or fade away, depending on the current app. To bring them back, double-tap in their approximate location.

Might want to parse that guidebook a bit more:

So do yours go off?
And like I said before, they don't go off even when not using an app and sitting at the homescreen.
Can't anyone answer a simple question? Do your navigation button lights stay on or go off?
Someone told me their lights stayed on except when using Netflix. I signed up for a Netflix trial just to test it. They go off when viewing a Netflix movie. I guess mine is normal, just not normal to what I'm used to.

Homescreen - they stay on as long as the screen is on.
They don't "go off" ever since they're part of the UI. The only time they change is when they fade to small dots instead of icons, whenever certain apps are trying to go full-screen, although it's pseudo-fullscreen since the dots remain to show you where the home button is should you require it.

Thanks, I guess I'm used to ICS 4.0.4 on my phone. The light on the navigation buttons will go off after a few seconds of not touching the screen.

You realise that they're not backlit 'buttons' don't you? They don't have their own separate backlight...

No, I've never really thought about it. It could be magic for all I know. I just know they will go off on my phone while the rest of the screen stays on.
The buttons are on the screen. They are not like the ones on your phone.
Quick question for those that have or have played with the device. I always like to disable Samsung's capacitive buttons and enable the onscreen buttons. This works fine except on the new Pro tablets where you can see the button outlines when they are not lit up. Is the S5 the same or are they completely blank when the back light is off?
Thanks in advance

well in the picture on the S5 page for xda forums, it shows the screen off with the outlines with the screen off.
or you could watch a video review or unboxing video and see if you can see the outlines there haha
currently at school, so i can't get on youtube

Yep, you can see the outlines.
Ah good find. That's sucks, don't want to have to look at those lol.

Hi Jmill... How do you enable the onscreen buttons on your S4? I have Wanam's latest rom... 4.4.2 NB3
Thanks,

So far Oreo is a noticeable improvement in battery and lag. But... Something has changed when using Instagram. The home touch buttons are now too closely overlayed over the Instagram buttons. They're literally on top of each other down there at the very bottom of the phone, With each button ust slightly to the left of each other. The result is that you're constantly hitting the wrong button, no room at all for error.
As a remedy I installed the XDA gestures app but that has a new slide bar that sits right in the center of the screen when using Whatsapp so that you cant see what you're typing. I have to tilt the phone in landscape to get the bar out of the text input box. Any suggestions?
I experience the same issue in both vanilla instagram and GBinsta.
Another issue is that Google Assistant is also right in top of the LG home touch buttons so that it blocks me using the screen capture/screenshot button. I have to do the fingerprint button+volume button thing. Otherwise the related searches pull up results take up half the screen so I cant screen capture. Google must really want us to buy Pixel phone...
What models are yall using? I'm on H918 Oreo using the small display size and my instagram works just fine.
I don't use Instagram all that much but I just went to check out this issue.
The thing that I noticed right off the bat was that if you have the "Home Touch Buttons" set to hide then when you use Instagram they will almost completely overlap when dragged up.
Solution: Use the little square dot in the bottom left corner (tap to change the state) to keep the Home Touch Buttons from hiding. They will nicely reside under the Instagram app and not be overlapped. When done with Instagram just tap the square to go back to the hidden state.
Hopefully this will be of use to you.
