STEP 1 - You DO NEED to get your bootloader unlock
Pre procedure: enable developers options and allow bootloader unlock
Noobie corner 1: Activating Developer Options -- Once you’ve found the Build number section of the settings, tap on the section 7 times. After two taps, a small pop up notification should appear saying "you are now X steps away from being a developer" with a number that counts down with every additional tap.
Noobie corner 2: How to Enter Fastboot Mode on Moto G
Step 1 - Turn OFF your Moto G.
Step 2 - Press and hold the Volume Down button along with the Power Button for 4-7 seconds. Release them.
Step 3 - The phone will display the following screen. This is your Fastboot screen, you can now connect your phone to your PC and access it via the Fastboot tool.
Now, take your time at https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a and unlock your bootloader
Only get back here when your bootloader is unlocked

Ok, now that you've unlocked your XT1078, its time to Inject a Custom Recovery:
Download this TWRP .img file.

Rename it to recovery.img
Noobie corner 3: Acces Fastboot through ADB - Once in Fastboot Mode (see Noobie corner 2) , conect your smartphone to your PC. On your ADB folder on your PC, press Shift + Mouse Right and select Open Command Prompt here. Now, just type your ADB commands.
When you unlocked your bootloader, you've learned how to use the ADB
Place the .img file in the same directory of the ADB files, get your XT1078/XT1072 into fastboot mode and within ADB, type
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
On the smartphone, with volume down go to recovery option and select it (with volume up)
reboot system directly from TWRP
Now, you have the TWRP recovery (once you get your smartphone into Fastboot > recovery (volume up to select)
Ok. Now to the latest step : Installing Super SU.
Download Chainfire's Super Su at his site. (remember to buy this guy a beer. We'd be nowhere without his active contribution)

Place the .Zip file on your smartphone and install it via TWRP.
Reboot and you'll have XT1078 / XT1072 with root privileges!

The key to the whole process is the twrp .img file, which by the way was the hardest to find. If the flash of the .img is accepted, then you got it. No problems in trying, if it's not suitable for your version, the initial chech at flashing will detect the alien Fw and will abort without flashing.

Realized unlocking the bootloader and managed to install TWRP normally, but when I flash the SuperSU, usually works well, however, after the cell start, click on the SuperSu APP and says there is no installed binaries and what it takes to install manually . (I've done it when fleshei, tried again and also did not yield, I downloaded the link of the file you desponibilizou). Detail: I wiped cache / dalvik / data

But, i want too a CM rom, original firmware is so bad

Hi there, sorry I took so long getting back to you. I can confirm that this works for xt1072 aswell but I used the xt0172 recovery found in the other thread.

Hi mate, have you got a link to that thread/rocover as the one in the OP doesn't work with my xt0172? I can use the search function but I wan't to be sure its the same one you used rather than flashing random custom recoveries
Edit. The same recovery flashed sucessfully after a second attempt, no idea why it didn't work first time around, happy days. Confirm recovery and root working and sticks after reboot on XT0172

Have you followed all the steps of the opening post? Including the bootloader unlock? I have the the same model you do, and all is working greatly. Try to redowload the files and start the procedures carefuly, step by step. Hope it works

HELLO EVERYONE WITH A ONE M9
heres what you've got to do to unlock the monster in your device
1)unlock the bootloader
2)use a custom, more powerful recovery
3)root your phone
4)use a custom rom
you must have working adb and fastboot and htc drivers, if you dont know how to get these files, pls leave a reply.
Now We Will Learn 1,2,3,4
STEP 1:
NOTE:- YOU WILL LOSE YOUR DATA(Unless you have a dev edition htc onem9 , if u have one , skip step 1)
follow these steps:-
A]create a htc dev account here-https://www.htcdev.com/register/
B]go here , make sure ur logged in on htc dev website! -http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions/page-2
C] dont download anything ! from htc dev website.
D]connect ur phone to pc and enter download mode :- adb reboot download
E] type the following in cmd< fastboot oem get_identifier_token > look at the pictures on the web page, link in step B, as to how to mark and copy your token identifier code , then paste it in the space provided bellow.
you will get an email from htc dev with a file called Unlock_Code.bin
download it and in cmd type < fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_Code.bin>
now, use ur volume buttons to select unlock bootloader and press power button.
FACTORY RESET !
NOTE:- if you have problems following these steps , check out this bootloader unlocking video. im sure it will help you.

STEP 2:
Note: HTC one m9 is different from previous generation htc ones as it has a block based ota update system. in brief, any modification done to the system will result in an ota update faliure. keeping that in mind, follow my steps as it is
A] download the recovery.img here we are using a beta version of twrp.

after downloading, rename this file to twrp.img
Also download su bineries+ supersu (required for rooting later)

put this file on ur sd card now!
B]go to download mode
type this adb command: adb reboot download
C]go to the directory where you have downloaded the recovery image
type in this fastboot command as soon as the phone is in download mode: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
DONE!
STEP 3:
A]enter bootloader
B]enter recovery
C] TAKE A BACKUP. A COMPLETE BACKUP . MOST IMPORTANTLY <<<<SYSTEM>>>> DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. THIS IS VVVVVVV IMP. IF U WANT TO TAKE AN OTA UPDATE EVER WITHOUT RUNNING ANY SORT OF RUU.
D]once thats done, go to advance->terminal and type this as it is:-
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system /system
once this is done, go to mount and make sure system is selected.
now install the zip file i had asked you to download in the previous step.
DONE! You are rooted!
if You have forgotten to take a system backup, dont worry, you can find it here, you can flash it at the time of an ota,

STEP 4:
A]For a custom rom , download the customrom.zip file
browse the zip file and extract the file called boot.img
now , put the zip file on ur phone storage or sd-card.
boot to recovery and install the zip file. make sure to wipe cache,dalvik cache, system, and-secure before installing for a clean install, leave data as it is .
IF YOU ARE S-OFF, SKIP THIS STEP:-
B] reboot to download mode and type this fastboot command from the directory you unzipped your rom or extraced the boot.img:-
< fastboot flash boot boot.img>
reboot and enjoy your custom rom !
EXTRA SECTION (VVVVVV IMP)(TO TAKE AN OTA update)
if ever you get an ota update heres what you have to do . do not download it now. first follow these steps.
A)download stock recovery from here:-

rename it as recovery.img
B) download system.img from here ( only if you have not taken the system backup from twrp when in r/o state)

take only the system.emmc.win file from the twrp backup of the original system i had asked you to make before rooting your phone. if you dont have it? you will have to hunt for an ruu, well dont ask me how to do that .
put the system file and recovery.img and put the same folder. run cmd from that folder (right shift+right mouse click ->run command window here)
and type in
adb reboot download
fastboot flash system system.emmc.win / fastboot flash system system.img (depends if you are using a twrp backup or the system image you have downloaded from above)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
thats it. now download the ota update and once the installation is done, you will need to re-root. follow from step 2 again.
if you get a boot-loop, return to download mode, flash the twrp beta recovery and wipe cache and dalvik-cache. and then reboot , then go back to download mode and re-flash stock recovery.

Nope I have spent the last two hours trying to unlock the boot loader using both tools found in the development section.
One my computer rejects and force closes.
The other just reboots into boot loader with it still locked.
HTC dev and command tool windows, comes up with the error can't run fast boot batch file or something to that effect.
All drivers installed.
Head is done in now

That is very much appreciated, I have gone through everything, all SDK stuff installed as per HTC dev but the command is like if the adb and fadtboot is not there on my com, but I have installed.
I will wait as my M8 was so so so easy to unlock, M9 is just a headache.
My computer is off for tonight, I honestly have a sore head with trying to figure it out.

Haha Karma indeed, no I'm just going to say F it and be happy with S-On & locked, I managed the all my 12 devices without issue, rooting and unlocking for some, bar the Z2 which was the same headache as this M9 of mine lol

Hello. Great guide. My question is about step 3, system backup for future OTA. I rooted my phone a few days ago, when no all things were clear. So, i made before flashing custom ROM only system backup not a full backup. I have system.emmc.win file saved. can i use it or a full backup is mandatory? thank you.
I have a little problem here, I tried several times to install superSU in recovery without success, should I give right to rewrite system partition or do I need to change something in boot.img. Every advice will be greatly appreciated )

don't use google sdk for adb and fastboot! i would suggest this installation. Remember, install it system-wide.

use chrome , access htcdev , select device not listed and follow the steps , if u want me to make the steps easier i shall post a reply, let me know

also , install htc sync manager,for htc drivers. may be the drivers are outdated , m9 being a new device.mine worked fine with the newest htc sync manager.

Did u take a system backup using twrp beta? if so , ur safe else if u used twrp (not beta) then you have taken a backup of system with the changed checksum. you are in urgent need of a stock system backup. let me know, ill host it if u need
and ya, only system.emmc.win is good enough if backuped via twrp beta .let me know as to what exactly you did.

I had this problem for a while and I figured out how to flash the update without the need to factory reset or change the update script of the update file.
Even if you get the user/release-keys error message. EXAMPLE:

You have to be using the latest lollipop release before updating. That means you have to be on YOG7DAS2K1 before attempting.
This worked out for me. But it might not work for you. I do not believe it can destroy your phone and switch some satellites off, but still, not responsible if it did so.
Requirments:
You have to have TWRP now or you at least have ROOT and any flashing app like flashify.
Download COS 13 update file. here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24459283995316311
Download the latest CyanogenMod Recovery https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=bacon
Download the cm-12.1-YOG7DAS2K1 full ROM [url]https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24369303960686198[/URL]
Guide:
Make sure the update cyanogen recovery option is checked in developer options.
Flash CyanogenMod Recovery downloaded before.
Reboot into it.
Use the update function in CyanogenMod Recovery and choose cm-12.1-YOG7DAS2K1 as the update file. It might take a while.
Now reboot to your phone. When booted and running, reboot to recovery.
Now you are running COS recovery. Update with the incremental.
That is it.
I hope this works out for you.
EXTRA: How to ROOT and have TWRP as a recovery:
Requirements:
A laptop.
Download TWRP and adb drivers on the laptop and the SuperSU and TWRP on your phone
Download Oneplus One TWRP Recovery [url]https://dl.twrp.me/bacon/twrp-3.0.2-0-bacon.img.html[/URL]

Guide:
Reboot into bootloader: you can do this in many ways. A simple google search will show you how. Easiest way is to turn the phone off and hold the volume up and power long enough for the phone to boot into bootloader.
Connect your phone to your laptop
Run the adb: I assume you are using windows of course. First put the TWRP .img file in this folder. Hold shift and right click in the folder downloaded above. A 'Open command window here' option will be there. Click it and write in the window
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-bacon.img
. A hint: you can just write twrp and hit TAB, it will complete the filename. Or you can rename the downloaded file to just twrp.img
Check your phone, you will be running TWRP temporarily. You now have the option to ROOT only by flashing the SuperSU file downloaded on your phone. If you reboot now you will lose TWRP and get back to the official COS Recovery. If you want TWRP for good flash the TWRP file downloaded on your phone before.
I hope this is easy. It actually is. just follow it step by step.

if you need a guide to root, this means you are not rooted, and if you are not rooted most probably you already have stock recovery, which means you can just install the OTA update without any issues.

Thank you, you made my life easier, but when I tried to run the twrp through fastboot I got an error and I got the solution writing "fastboot boot twrp.img" (after renaming the file).

As I stated before you have to be on COS 12.1 YOG7DAS2K1. This method should not format your phone or remove any data as there is no factory reset step.
As for the link they are all over the place now. I used the official one. I'll link it for your convenience.
can anyone please pull the stock recovery from COS 13, not 12. I kinda screwed up while updating and now stuck in bootloop.
Update: The issue is resolved. The issue was because of SuperSu 2.46. Installing the latest TWRP and SuperSu 2.66 fixed it. Marshmallow is now rooted!
Thank you very much! After going back to stock and still not receiving the update for more than a week (well at least it felt like a week, Lol) I decided to flash a full COS 13 zip floating around. Instantly liked the new ROM but it had root/symlink issues only to be resolved when flashing a custom kernel it seems. Not what I really wanted so then I stumbled onto your thread and this technique worked 100%! I was on DAS2K1 (flashed thru a custom recovery) already and had several failed attempts flashing just the incremental outright (thru stock recovery)., but by flashing DAS2K1 thru stock recovery first as you suggest then the incremental seems to do the trick.
I did it all the steps, but my phone doesn't not start. After optimizing aplications I have bootloop at "cyanogen modready".
L.E. I think the problem was one of old aplications. After a clean install everything works.

I don't need to factory reset or wipe cache .

Now my oneplus one is rooted and TWRP install using ADB and its fly.All rooted apps is working together with Adaway.

Your guide got me updated, first time with no problems.
6.0.1 is such an improvement on 5.1.1, I tried a couple of other 6.0 roms, however this has by far been the most stable and bug free.

I had tried this before and it did not work for me. Kept getting an error saying "the signature file was not a complete file" and therefore it didn't flash. But it may have been editing error on my part. This method works just fine and no need to give up your data either.
Having tried many other ways, I got it done with this instruction.

Why This Version?
This TWRP theme will stay even after a wipe or reset, and is more stable to use.
TWRP - Team Win Recovery Project, is an open source, community project. It is a custom recovery used for installing custom software on your device.
Instructions
First of all, please note that you can brick and totally destroy your device, if you do not follow these instructions correctly. And you will be solely responsible for the damage.
Option 1 - If you already have TWRP installed
1. Download Materialized_TWRP.img - Download Link below
2. Boot into TWRP
3. Go to Install
4. Select Install Image
5. Go to location of Material_TWRP.img and tap on it.
6. Choose Recovery [IMPORTANT]
7. Swipe and Reboot TWRP
8. Enjoy!
Option 2 - If you don't already have TWRP
1. Download Materialized_TWRP.img - Download Link below
2. Get Minimal ADB & Fastboot from here.
3. Install it!
4. Copy the Materialized_TWRP.img to ADB & Fastboot folder
5. Make sure your tablet is unlocked and that you have Fastboot drivers.
6. Poweroff tablet
7. Boot into bootloader by holding the volume down button and tapping the power button once while still holding the volume button.
8. Now open ABD and Fastboot folder, and right click while holding the shift button. This will show the option "Open Command Windows here"
9. Plug in your tablet using a wire.
10. In the command window type "fastboot flash recovery Materialized_TWRP.img" without the quotations.
11. Once done, choose recovery mode from the menu in tablet.
12. Enjoy!

Yes! Since this is based on a official TWRP (3.0.2-2) it works. It also works on marshmallow without any touch problems.
I just downloaded the file and try to flash it with two 3.0.2-2 and I did as the instructions said, install; install image, location of material TWRP img choose recovery, swipe and reboot and then I get thrown in to download mode phone will not boot in to recovery nor system I got to Odin flash recovery to get back to system. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong please let me know I'll love to try this.

One critique from my limited use: Add more contrast to the "swipe to unlock" when the screen times out. It was hard to identify the slider as it is pretty well hidden by the background.

I have seen a lot of guys asking for help regarding the OTA failure on K5 Plus. I am using the 3 GB variant of A6020a46. To make life a lot easier, I have decided to show you how install the OTA without errors or rescue incase of any failures.

Things Required:
First of all, make sure you have these:

Make sure you follow these steps exactly
This tutorial has two stages - If your phone is brand new: proceed to step - b. If you have messed up following the tutorials online, forget everything and start from step - a:
a) Flashing with Fresh Stock ROM(requires PC)
Install the drivers and QPST without any errors(Sometimes you may need to disable Driver Signature Check, Google how to do it)
Charge your device fully or atleast 75%
Extract the S045 version to the clean location. Try to keep the path as simple as possible.
Open the QFIL application
Press both Volume + and - together and connect your phone
The red LED will glow and your PC will detect the phone
On QFIL, It will show as qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008 <COM PORT>

After the flashing is complete, you will see the blue text: DOWNLOAD SUCCESSFUL
Disconnect the phone from the PC
Now press the power button and wait for the phone to boot up(Be patient, first boot will take longer)
Don't insert sim / sdcard yet
Once you see welcome screen, just do basic configs and reach the home screen
This is the tricky part! Don't do any configs or settings...
At this stage, when you type ####6020#, it will show you default - This is completely normal
Now follow the procedure a) above
b) Updating the phone with OTA
You may get OTA on your phone or when turning on the brand new one
Make sure you are on stock firmware and NOT rooted
Charge your device for about 75%
Download the OTA from above links
Extract the zip for these files: India2Default.ota.zip, India.ota.zip, System.zip
First flash S056 and then S105
Switch OFF the phone and reboot into recovery(Press Vol +, Vol - and Power together)
Follow this order while flashing: India2Default.ota.zip -> System.zip -> India.ota.zip
Choose install update from sdcard and select the OTA zip & confirm.
It will take about 15-20 minutes for the each of the OTA to install
After update, phone will reboot automatically
Be very patient, first boot will take a bit longer
Congrats, your phone has been updated! Enjoy!

Even after following the procedure, when I try to install the OTA zip, it still gives me the error that my device can't switch carriers.

Will only work if you have not/do not insert(ed) a SIM (yet).
If you've finished flashing the stock firmware and still aren't able to update your phone, download the two ota zip files from the original post, extract the "S045" archive to a folder and copy two files from here viz. "system.zip" and "your_region.zip" e.g. France.zip (the one with default in the name is not needed) and place them in your phone's memory card or internal storage. Now, shut down your phone and start it with all buttons pressed (Vol up + Vol down + power), it'll bring up the recovery menu. If you have stock recovery, press "apply update from sd card" and select "your_region.zip" file. It should flash and reboot the device. After the phone boots up, go to dialer, type in ####6020#, it'll bring up a menu (takes some time), here your region should appear, press on it and just exit ( do not press anything else). Now shut down your device again and start it into recovery mode again, this time flash the "system.zip" file. It'll take some time. It'll reboot phone. Delete both the files from your phone. After this is done, follow the same procedure with the "S056" archive, but this time you'll only need to flash it's "system.zip" file. You'll have VoLTE support now. Enjoy.

Hey, sorry guys! I was away due to my work. I recommended this device for my friend & he bought it. He was testing Lineage OS and decided to roll back to stock ROM. We noticed that we need to update the device in a tricky way. We flashed the device through PC but could not update it via OTA due to some errors with carrier switching. After some research, found that we need to extract the OTA zip and flash the files in this order: India2Default.ota.zip -> System.zip -> India.ota.zip. This time it was 100% successful and completed without errors. I just updated my post! Strange that I didn't get these errors

@Joysharoon S056 and S105 are OTA updates and can't be flashed through QFIL. Don't make it too hard! First flash S045 through PC. Then extract these files: India2Default.ota.zip, India.ota.zip, System.zip from the OTA into separate folders and copy them to sdcard. Now boot into stock recovery and flash them...

ALTERNATIVELY FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW TO INSTALL THE BOOT PATCH.
You flash this at your own risk. Please ensure you have the stock ROM to hand downloaded from SAMMOBILE in case of problems. This will trip the knox counter.
Instructions:
Flash with ODIN 3.12.7 in the AP slot.
Put your device in DOWNLOAD mode.
Uncheck Auto reboot.
Load the respective file below into the AP slot and hit start.
After flashing and ODIN reports PASS immediately reboot to recovery by holding POWER + HOME + VOL DOWN.
As soon as the screen goes blank change to VOL UP whilst still holding POWER + HOME.
You should now see TWRP recovery.
NOTE: FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE STEPS ABOVE IMPLICITLY WILL RESULT IN STOCK RECOVERY REPLACING TWRP AT FIRST BOOT.
NOTE: ON ANDROID 5.1.1/6.0/7.0 DEVICES IT IS NECESSARY TO GO TO:
Settings -> Developer Options -> OEM unlocking
AND ENABLE OEM UNLOCK FIRST OR YOU MAY ENCOUNTER 'BLOCKED BY FRP LOCK' WHEN FLASHING.

To Root:
Flash the latest SuperSU release with TWRP:

To disable forced encryption, dm-verity and mount internal storage:
(Note this MUST be flashed after SuperSU if you intend to root)
1. Boot to Twrp
2. Format Data partition using FORMAT DATA button under Wipe options.
(Note: This will wipe the internal storage)
3. Check DATA is mountable.
4. Install SuperSU (if root is required)
5. Install boot image patch below.
6. Reboot

No worries. I had an idea this might be the case as I had the same issue on the J330F and had to fix the issue on that device also.
The 2 devices are fairly similar.
In the meantime an otg mouse should work.

What do you mean a boot loop? Is that from TWRP or SuperSU?
Please post the recovery log and more details.

I think that boot loop is for SuperSU! I wanna try flashing the TWRP but I don´t know if I will have bootloop

You can always flash the stock recovery to recover.

Just getting back to you now. I think the bootloop is caused by TWRP because I haven't even attempted to flash SuperSU.
My process:
I move SuperSU and the no-verity file over to my internal storage before flashing TWRP in Odin. I flash TWRP. I reboot into recovery. Touch screen works but I can't mount internal storage to flash no-verity or SuperSU. I reboot and instead of being asked to reset it's just a boot loop.
Flashed the stock rom.
