After making some research and trying to find out why Google Play Services is one of the top battery draining apps in Lollipop, I could see that somehow WiFi keeps enabled and trying to find "something" with the Google Play Services.
Before start, I should say that I made a factory reset and updated the apps that comes with the phone, so no possibility for an app behaving in weird manner.
I left my phone overnight with just the signal enabled, this means no data, no sync, no WiFi, to see if the drain it´s the normal one from the phone itself:
View attachment 3264468View attachment 3264469
The red part is something strange I noticed it, it seems that "something" awake the device and mysteriously activated the WiFi.
I usually keep my WiFi and sync all my accounts through WiFi when being in home/work, and disable sync and activating data when I have no WiFi range. For the half part of the day, the phone behaved good. After I left work, I go to some place for around 2 hours when I have no WiFi connection; after 2 hours of being there, I checked my phone and it almost drain about 10% and Google Play Services became the top application on the battery graph.
View attachment 3264470View attachment 3264471
After getting home, I checked again the graph and notice some important facts: it seems that WiFi never was disabled and Google Play Services made a great impact on the battery for the couple of hours I wasn't connected to WiFi.
Moreover, disabling all the connections (except cellular signal) doesn't work and still keep the WiFi enabled and Google Play Services consuming a lot of battery; finally, the only way to interrupt this WiFi insanity was to put the phone to airplane mode for a couple of minutes and then turn WiFi on in my home.

Have you guys checked this behavior or have any problem with Google Play Services?.
I also have this behavior in lollipop. It seems to be related to lollipop, not only to this phone.

Thanks so much for the answer, I already checked the thread and it seems is the same behaviour.
By the way, are you experiencing this drain with your phone?, would be really nice to know if all users or just some of us are experiencing this problem.

Does the Nexus 6 has this problem also?, I'm wondering if it is because of Lollipop in general or just for the Motorola devices.

i bought the nexus 6 straight from verizon. With 5.1 google play services only shows up draining 1% of the battery. It may be the earlier build of lollipop causing the problem.

Its a problem in 5.1 as well. Its dependent on the version of.play services running.

But if this was the case, all we have the same problem, right?, because Play Services always update itself to the last version, no matter if we are on 5.0.2 or 5.1.

Following setting worked for me:
Go to Settings > Accounts > Ads and enable "Opt out of interest-based ads"
And now Google Services is not the top battery consumer on my MotoMaxx

My device is ALWAYS searching for GPS. Google Services is draining my battery and consuming GPS for more than EIGHT HOURS.
I know you may tell me to disable GPS, or disable location settings, and etc. But I need to keep all these things enabled because they are pretty useful on Foursquare, Maps, finding a taxi, and, mainly, for finding my device if something bad happens!
This never happened to me on Galaxy Note II or any other device. Has anyone ever faced this?!

Yeah, that's a workaround, but Google Now stops working if I disable this. I'm trying to understand what's happening, since this is not normal and everybody needs the location settings enabled to get all features of a lot of apps.
For example, this never happened to me or other devices. Seems like an Android 4.3 and Google Services issue.

Bringing my experiences from G3 to Nexus 6.
With the mods to Google play services on my G3 I was able to increase my battery longevity by a significant amount. This thread is to guide and discuss as to which "services" could be disabled inside the Google play services app using "3Ctoolbox". Disabling certain services prevents Ggoogle play service from running in the background, thus, saving battery.
As a reminder, some of the services can still run after disabling them and even cause a large amount of wakelocks. To solve this, please disable the corresponding tasks in Activities, Providers, and Receivers. For example: disabling update.SystemUpdateService in the Services tab will not disable the service completely, so you must navigate to Receivers tab and disable everything that is related to it there.
Lastly, think ahead while disabling services. If you play games and use "games" app to sync them, then you should not disable anything that deals with games. Same applies to other services.
Update 5/30/15: Google play services version 7.5... here is the list of what services can be safely disabled. Perform at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damages.

If you're going to create a thread to discuss what changes can be made that are helpful and not harmful and have made such changes, would you mind discussing the changes you made in the thread you made for that purpose?
It's not quite a disabling of a service but all I've done with play services is disable location, keep awake, and wake up through app ops. No downsides that I've noticed yet.

well, if you are a ok google user, then there are downsides. if you disable location services, you wont get any info like "traffic home" or "traffic to work"(for example). if you dont use ok google, then disabling locations wont affect you to much.

I didn't notice any. It could help by lowering the amount of RAM that is being used, but i think this would be in very extreme cases where all the RAM is used. With the way the phone is made, it has more than enough performance in stock form. Disabling services is primarily for battery longevity.

You need full root. Download the app suggested in the first post. Scroll left once you open it, find "application manager", make sure at the bottom it says" system", click on the "apps" on the top bar, scroll to Google play service and click open then details, next scroll right and select services from the top bar.
After doing that, GPS and location stopped working. It cannot stablish my location. Even after enabling all Location services, it still not working.
Restart the phone. None of the things that are disabled in my list will affect the GPS

The exact same thing happened to me (only on Maps, didn't notice it on other apps) when I uninstalled the latest version of Play Services and installed the factory version, but when I updated Play Services again the problem went away. As for bugs on the 5.1 update, here's what I've seen so far:
1- GPS icon never disappears from status bar. The only way to get it out is selecting "Battery Saving" in the Location settings. If "High accuracy" is selected the icon stays there forever.
2- Some weird bug with trusted places and Android Device manager, it seems they're conflicting somehow. Trusted places only started to work after I disabled Android Device Manager from device administrators and uninstalled the updated version of Play Services (I updated it afterwards and trusted places seems to be working fine now).
3- When I toggle wifi off, it takes much longer for 3G to connect than it did before.
I'm using the 5.1 leak from the brazilian soak for model XT1097.

That's actually exactly what I was expecting. It's a qcom bug in the adreno drivers and will be fixed in the final release (qcom has released newer drivers that fix the problem).
Contacts suddenly disappeared also recent calls and speed dial totally deleted then re synched again
I did a cache wipe and uninstalled fit. still getting crappy battery life. loosing about 10% per hour with medium use. I used to be still at 45% by the end of the day, now i'm hitting that mid afternoon.
I had the Google Map graphic bug after an update from the Play Store. I cleared the data in the Google Maps App and it seemed to fix the issue.
I also had an issue with the Trusted Places as well. I removed the places from my list and re-adding them and it seemed to work. I'm at home now and I don't have to unlock with my pattern and today at work it was working just fine.
I have not experienced any of the other bugs mentioned here, though.
Three weeks with 5.1 despite added nice features which I really like but generally it's totally unstable
I still can't use Moto Voice. All it does is default to Google Search. I say Okay Moto X whats up and it does a search on Google search. It has been like this since the soak test to 5.0 that basically bricked my phone because they couldn't update us.

I saw in another thread to disable all the "OK Google" options. There are two in the settings of the Google App, and then the one in the phone language and input settings for the Google Voice Typing.
Since I've done this, I've gain roughly 3-4 more hours by my estimate (haven't recorded data).

If you don't know, a VPN sends your data encrypted through a Wi-Fi network. The data is then unencrypted by the VPN server, and is sent to the requested location. This is useful if you want to use an open network but don't want people to be able to spy on your browsing. After exploring a little, I found out how to set this up.
Requirements
A recent Nexus smartphone or tablet running android Nougat
The latest version of google connectivity services
Navigate to Settings>Google>Networking.
Enable wifi Assistant.
It's as simple as that. Whenever you come across an open network, your phone will automatically connect to it through a vpn.
Thanks
I was under the impression they opened up Google Connectivity Services beyond Project Fi users to all Nexus users, so do you really need to download this separately?

As Droid Life said, the feature is coming soon. Until its full release, this is the only way to access this otherwise Fi-only feature. I have no networking feature in my settings, and unless you do, I believe this is the only way to access this feature at the time of this post.

I can't tell you for sure because I have fi and it has always shown up for me, but when I search generic with no account from a PC, it shows up on Google Play store, so I assume it is already there and available.

It has a store page on the play store but there is no option to download it for me.
Your right. I found Google connectivity services under system apps. I believe using activity launcher is still the only way to manually create the VPN. Thanks for letting me know

The feature has now been released publicly and you can access it from Settings>Google>Network.

it only works if there are open networks that have not been connected to previously and do not require signing in.
Has anyone in the UK got this feature yet ? I'm stock rom, unbranded, unlocked phone all updated.
Not on my phone in the UK yet, but the feature is apparently rolling out as a server-side change. Could take up to a few weeks for it to get to everyone.
