Issues since lollipop - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there! I am not new to rooting and modding phones, but I have recently gone back to pure stock on my s5. I have updated to lollipop, (both updates) and my phone is running horrible I have done 2 factory resets. The phone freezes, when I open the camera, it's all black. Sometimes the screen dims and I can't get it to come back on at all without pulling the battery.
Love the phone...... just a tad bit frustrated
If anyone can shed some light on this or offer some advice, that would be great.
Thanks!

I can't shed any light but a clean install might be what you need. Install the OC4 stock tar using Odin.

As said by the post above, best option would be doing a clean install using ODIN.

[Q] Help! Setup Wiz Crashes after Factory Reset!

I just rooted my (R2-D2) Droid 2 two days ago using the app z4root (via 4shared). I'm on stock 2.2 (and by that I mean what came on the phone, so it's actually a light Blur 2.2)
Then I wanted to get rid of some of the bloatware, so I downloaded Bloat Freezer (still available on the Market) to do that. After freezing whatever apps I saw fit, I returned to see my homescreen black. I did some research and apparently this stems from "freezing" something to do with MotoBlur. I know for sure that I froze "Files" and "AccountSync", which apparently caused this problem with other people.
Supposedly a factor reset would fix it, but it didn't. So that's why I'm here.
So first I tried a normal reboot. That didn't work. Then I did a factory reset. I got all the way through the Setup Wizard, and then it took me back to the "Touch the Android to Begin" screen instead of closing to the home screen like normal. When I try to go through the Wizard again it crashes after syncing an account. I've tried three or four factory resets and this happens every time.
People had this problem while they were on other ROMs and supposedly flashing back to the original OS (not stock, but "stock" i.e. what Motorola put on the phone before), but I'm not on any other kind of ROM so I don't know if that would help.
Should I flash back to the original? Can I even do that if I haven't flashed an alternative ROM? Should I just try flashing to a different ROM (MIUI or Bugless Beast)? Can you even flash a ROM if you can't access most of the phone (the only things I have access to are my email [when the message icon pops up] and the hard reset menu thing)?
Note: Sorry if this isn't in the right thread, I couldn't figure out where to put malfunction type things. Mods can move it to where ever is appropriate. I also searched both XDA and the entire internet and either no one has this problem in the EXACT way I do (i.e. not on any special ROM) or the thread is extremely, extremely dead. So that's why I made the decision to post a new thread about it. Thanks!
Edit: I re-flashed my phone with RDS Lite, and while the homescreen is back it's extremely, extremely laggy. At first I thought it was broken again until I realized it was just taking so long to respond to my finger swipes. Right now it's trying to download 46 apps in the background, so I'll wait until that's done to try again. But I had faster responses even when everything was all broken and it was trying to install 46+ apps..
Those people were right. Find the .SBF file for your version of the Droid 2 and sbf back to "stock". That should fix you problem.
I'm in the process of RSDLite-ing right now, I wasn't sure if it would help though.. Stay tuned!

I believe so. But it should be relatively easy to reroot.
UGH, IT TOOK AWAY MY R2-D2 BOOT ANIMATION......
Also, I noticed that you have the MIUI ROM. Do you feel like it performs better than stock? Faster? Sometimes I feel like the Blur-lite was a little laggy..

Did you use the file specific to your phone? Either way, you should be able to get it back. Someone ripped out all the stuff from the R2D2 phone back when it came out. It's on the net somewhere.
I love Miui. It definitely performs better than stock and is much faster. I love the polished menu system and the included GB features are great. I especially love how you can customize practically everything. It has also greatly improved my battery life. I've been getting up to 20 hours on my standard extended battery. Good stuff. And if you don't like the iOSuck look of Miui, you can always download a different launcher (like ADW) and use that (like I did). Overall it performs surprisingly well considering it's on a locked phone.
(I've played with CM7 on my Incredible and PE on my now retired OG Droid. Miui definitely performs better.)

Well apparently not.. I'll have to try and find the boot animation again.
And yeah, a lot of people have been saying the stuff about the battery life.. Have you ever tried Bugless Beast? Because that's the other ROM I'm stuck between. So I'm not sure which one is performing better on people's Droids

I haven't used it yet, but I have heard good things. I probably will try it at one point though.
Like others have told me, you're just going to have to try them and see for youself. Different people have different experiences so it is difficult to determine which is better without some kind of experience with them.

Does anybody have this issue on their tablets?

Hi does anybody reading this have the similar issue? If so do you know the solution or how to fix this issue?
1. Adobe Flash. A small little issue I've been also having that Adobe flash on my Android gives me issues, when I play a video on the browser it usually takes a couple of seconds for the video to show, sometimes it doesn't so I have to reload the page
2. Ever since I've flashed and rooted my device, on the screen I've been getting a little bit of this wavy thing at the bottom of my screen, almost as if it's loosing power down at the bottom of the screen....If that makes sense.
If you know a solution or is facing this problem, please let me know. Or post the solution?
It'll be a great big help! Thanks and thanks for your time! Much appreciate!
my opinion is:
the flash player, it playing streaming software player flash.....it may lag just a little but its not that big a deal is it really?
the wavy lines, i would say look into of a its a defective tab and if you have receipt take it back for a replacement
i wouldnt say defective tab, have had mine for a year, and after flashing over to tabonney's ICS i get an odd flicker too, as for flash, its trying to render what computers play, with just much less hardware resources to use. Its slow and thats the way its going to be.
My video issues aren't like yours Mkami... But if I might suggest making a full backup, then reflash your rom. Maybe you'll get lucky and the issue will go away.

You know, I've been waiting on someone to mention the odd flicker. Does your tab do it when either, a 3d game or app is running, or maybe on a home screen that has an email widget? And does the tablet seem to still be reacting normally to touch input other than the fact that the screen doesn't show any change? I am thinking about sending my tab in over this for warranty work. I got mine over a year ago too. Sure am glad I paid with plastic, got an extra year warranty for doing it. I just wonder what they are gonna say about the bent corner where it hit the pavement...

With pached bootloader and any rom on this site and stock I got
screen flicker, very poor battery, not so smooth scrolling and host of other gliches. (all compared to ota). Flashed back to stock ota and not looked back. No problems. It seemed to me that the problems are not in the roms because stock had the same problems, it the act of changing the bootloader. Just what I have seen, try it just to get rid of the screen problem, go to ota stock no mods and it will be gone.

You know, that's kind of what I've been thinking. I've been testing by going back and forth between bootloaders. So far that is the best explaination. I'll likely go back to stock again soon. But it seems like I remember it doing it at least once on the stock bl...
When I first updated to ICS, all was well. Within a couple weeks, Flash video got laggy, the browsers got laggy, and I got the occasional screen flickers. I backed everything up and did a hard reset and it's been great ever since.
I haven't heard a really good explanation for all this, but a good theory is leftover files remaining on the system, or possibly file fragments, are interfering with the OS. A hard reset purges the old crap out... regardless of the explanation, it's known to fix these problems.

Awesome, glad that you were able to get to normal. It didn't help me tho... I might start a different thread for this if it keeps up. I don't want to hijack Mkami's thread with a different problem. Thank you for the help.
Hey everyone thanks for the advices and different problems you guys are facing.
Sorry for my poor explanation... When I mean screen "wave" what I really meant is screen flicker
I found a semi cure for this...Though I don't know about other peoples tablets, all I did was raise the brightness of the screen and the flicker seemed to not show, I must say though that flicker doesn't really much bother me as it does with the flash, but I guess I have to live with it, just a heads up, my tab isn't defective. Truthfully when I do go to stock ROM everything on the device including the flicker goes away, it's only when I flash my device that I notice that, but I am pretty sure there might be a solution for that one or another, because a buddy of mine has the same tablet, which is why I got that a500. I love it and I love android way much more than any other.
Anyways, I hope Flexreaper releases a new rom soon, really am excited with anticipation. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us.
I am going to try that hard reset and fully restoring the device after a nandroid backup and test and reflash and check if anything works with a good
result I shall post up the steps and how to fix this little issue.
I thank you all! Please post if anybody else has this issue or solution down! Much appreciated! Thanks!

[Q] Impacts of Rooting Nexus 7 - Stability

I'm new to the whole Android thing but I used to install lots of roms on my trusty old Windows Mobile devices over the years. I remember then that trying out different roms sometimes meant things would stop working.
Here's my problem. I have a Nexus 7 and it works fine on stock unrooted 4.1.2. I think. I've used the Nexus Root Toolkit to (very easily) unlock and root it. When rooted on stock rom (4.1.1 or 4.1.2), it takes a couple of seconds to turn on from sleep, sometimes needs to reboot, sometimes the gyroscope/acceslerometer locks and doesn't work as it should...
Is a rooted Nexus 7 less stable/reliable than an unrooted one?

Rooting doesn't make a difference on stability (or shouldn't)
All rooting does is give you admin rights to parts of the phone not accesible without rooted. Basically...
Customer ROM's for the Nexus at the moment (and sorry about this devs but its true) are not yet up to par with the Stock ROM.
Its stable pretty fast and not bad with battery.
Hope this helps.
Right so after lots of erratic behaviour with rooted stock 4.1.2, I unrooted and relocked the boot loader. It was better already but I've also run the Forever Gone thing and it's now working perfectly.
I would like to root again but not at the expense of stability. I had previously use the Toolkit if it makes any difference.

Rooting and/or unlocking the bootloader will have no direct effect on stability. What you do with your device after rooting is entirely a different issue.

This would be true if it weren't a Nexus device. We can more or less compile the same ROM that Google shipped. CyanogenMod 10 in my experience has been rock solid stable, though obviously there are still some bugs, I have encountered none. I also used EOS for a little, and that was equally great.

Nope.
IF you flash a non stock rom and/or kernel, then it depends on what you use. Read notes and user replies.
Sometimes I do get random shut downs when not in use, both while charging and not charging. I am not sure if that is a 4.1.2 issue or if it's tied to the rom I'm using. Have had it happen on two different roms.

I lost the ability to control the music app with my headphone controls after rooting, it didnt happen when I opened the box and played with the nexus
Some apps are written to block rooted devices but there's no way the mere act of unlocking and rooting would affect overall stability.

After a day on stock rom I thought it was settled but no...
The battery drained down and after that it kept getting stuck at the Google Cross animation. I spent a while re-flashing stock rom and eventually it starts up. Sometimes. The accelerator issue remains but it is less frequent.
I contacted Google who put me on to Asus. They are going to send me an RMA number and we'll take it from there.
how do you revert or reset to a factory state???
I´m new with the nexus 7 so really have no clue
To reset your device, go to "settings", then "backup & reset", and finally "factory data reset".
The difficult in waking is something I went through with my N7. I found there is a bug with the auto-brightness setting. If I use the manual option I don't experience any problems.
I rooted my N7 the day I got it (had experience with SGS and Gnex) and haven't looked back. I haven't had any other issues than the "sleep of death".
Hope this helps.

If you mean stock non rooted, then the above will set you back to factory.
If you are rooted, that will not remove the root. You will need to flash a stock image to completely return to stock and then re-lock the bootloader.
I seem to have had more problems if the power runs down. I have turned off the auto brightness and I agree it's better in terms of starting up. I still have the issue with rotation not always working. Also, I notice it takes several seconds for the screen to come on when I press the power button. Is that normal?

Okay now it's getting weird. I got an RMA number and they are due to collect it tomorrow and fix it. Since I got the RMA number it has behaved perfectly. I did make a video of the problems but since making the video I've not been able to reproduce them. The battery is down to 14% now, will see what happens when it is fully drained. One major difference is the power button instantly switches the device on whereas it used to wait a few seconds.
Can hardware just fix itself like that? I'm concerned they'll get it and say they can't detect any problems and charge me for the shipping...
I'll keep on testing until morning but if you guys have any ideas please let me know.

I've used Wug's toolkit to return to compete stock. It will wipe everything. It's a two step process, you will still need to lock the boot loader. Go read the thread in the Android development section.

It's fine, even rooted so have cancelled the RMA. Hopefully it was just a short term fluke.
Several weeks on I have had no more repetition of these problems. I did have a line flicker occasionally before installing 4.2 but even that problem has gone away now. I just don't understand how the behaviour can be so unpredictable like it needed to settle into its new home or something.

[Q] Just wondering how many of us have a dead N7???

Just wondering if this is something of a user fault from bad/incorrect flashing? or hardware/software from ASUS/Google problems.
If you have a dead N7 from whatever reason other than dropping it or dunking it in water. Please respond, perhaps if there is a significant number of people with problems not caused by physical or water damage. We can with the help of some legal advisors bring this to the attention of ASUS/Google and they might change their minds and do something about all of us???
My died after 5.0.1 OTA update. It booted without problem and worked pretty bad and I rebooted it few times and after some time it didn't booted any more. Recovery worked but I could not unlock bootloader. Luckily I had warranty for one more month and they switched motherboard free of charge. And few hours ago I updated to 5.1.1 (ota) and it works great now (I have three users and there is just small lag when switching between them). Hope it will stay like that.
Mine just keeps rebooting after the Google title and then it gets these lines running on a blank screen then shuts off.

Np. If its still broken after post more info and it can be figured out.
My sister's N7 is a refurbished model and it has constantly been giving her problems, it would always after a month or so of usage would reboot and bootloop. I would have to boot into recovery and wipe cache or factory reset or even flash the stock image again to get it working. I just got back from being away and its now completely dead, won't even charge. It was running stock 5.1

Sounds like failed memory, or memory controller, by the symptoms of reboots after a month that were fixed by a wipe and reinstall. Once it got to a certain level of storage usage it failed, you wiped, and the cycle repeated. Unfortunately it is probably dead. The good news is you can pick up a replacement motherboard for a very reasonable price on eBay.
Update!
So for my issue, it was the battery.
First, I tried to flash the stock image. Still restarted and got the lines. It drove me nuts!
Something inside me said to order a new battery from amazon for $20.00.
I did that, installed the new battery, flashed, and my nexus 7 is back in action. For those that are going through the fuzzy lines and restarting issue, you guys might want to try that. Worked out for me. Cheers!
Edit: I'm not sure if I would like to go back to updating all the way to 5.1 yet. But 4.1 works for me. [emoji28]

I find the note for a little too small to work on. it's a great device for the money and I'll keep buying them as long as I keep breaking them or they keep dying for something else this size comes on the market at this price. my only real gripe is that the graphics abilities if these devices are a little weak.

Terrible performance after Galaxy S8 SM-G950U One UI/Pie update

Hi all,
My phone performance is terrible, everything runs slow and lagging since I took the update. Phone performance was very good before. Anyone else experience this and have any ideas to bring performance back to par?
Thanks for any help.
Factory reset or full wipe after updating to a new firmware. Also, do not restore Google apps, just start from a scratch.
I also have serious lag, it feels like a budget phone. I've had this phone since it launched, and installed every update without precaution. This is the first time experiencing these issues.
Frame rate is terrible, especially while scrolling. Delays in pressing buttons or launching apps have grown from milliseconds to sometimes two or three seconds. No other problems(aside from poor design choices). It feels like aggressive power throttling, not memory issues.
As soon as I saw that so much manual power management has been replaced by a "learning" system, I'm skeptical that the usual fixes will do anything for my problems, especially considering there is no other malfunction. Anyone else?

Well, that's what I was waiting to hear. If ppl aren't universally having the issue, then a factory reset may cure the problem. I'll give it a try soon.
Yes i just got bad performance after installing pie (custom rom, so i always factory reset or it wont work) but yeah after 14 days my phone start to slowing down like old smartphone and the apps is not starting correctly (e.g i must start magisk manually or the root wont work (the app cant detect if phone is rooted even when magisk hide is off)).
I try the LightROM and ALEXIS and both have this problem (performance way worse on lightrom). I know this isnt their fault but the samsung fault (maybe because its early relase? Or...).
Note : performance is normal in the first day, but after 14-30 days the phone start to acting weirdly (the apps behave weirdly) dunno why.
Btw i use SM-G950FD
After restarting about 5 times, then manually clearing cache partition, I was able to get smooth performance. Unfortunately, I still have to restart at least once a day to prevent lagging animation. This is with light usage: streaming, facebook, email.
I turned on "reduce animations" in advanced features, and set the animation scales to 1.5 with dev options. This seems to help prolong smooth operation, but I still have to restart daily. Next step is factory reset, I have a lot to backup...
fresh install thru odin and start all over again is really good solution. at the beginning i also experiencing lag
Mine has an issue of having the fingerprint not working after it was changed. I have to do one of the following:
1. Restart and boot via safe mode then if it works, reboot again
2. Restore Settings from synced backup
3. Reset Settings
So much of a hassle.... I am thinking of rooting this soon.

Hi all,
My phone performance is terrible, everything runs slow and lagging since I took the update. Phone performance was very good before. Anyone else experience this and have any ideas to bring performance back to par?
Thanks for any help.

Had the same problem so flashed official firmware (for my carrier, downloaded from sammobile) with Odin. This part can be done without of rooting your phone.
Do this first (back up your data before as clear flash will delete everything), and test after if it works well. If not, root it (https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa...w-to/guide-root-install-twrp-samsung-t3747535) and install adaway from xda labs.
If you root the phone or install TWRP, e-fuse will break and you cannot go back after that. Warranty will be void and the Samsung fit app won't work anymore.
Fortunately, there are workarounds on a rooted phone (https://tinyurl.com/yy37gnwv) so that is not a big deal, at least for me.
Not sure when you root it if wave pay services will work so do some research first.

Has your lag subsided after time? Mine appears after a night's sleep. It never fails: Restart in the morning, smooth scrolling all day. Next morning, laggy, stuttering scrolling until I restart again. I've uninstalled all unused apps and left power mode on high performance. No change. As soon as I wake up, animation lags like a budget phone. Everything else is reliable, just not the animation.
Of course, I don't actually know what's going on, but I'm willing to bet that this new power management system that we can't control is to blame. If I have to go through all the odin, etc steps, I may just roll back to oreo. Pie is prettier, but I want my smooth operation back.

S10e gets similar reception to my A8(2018). When I got the A8 I had a S8 before that, and i don't remember there being any difference in signal. I live in poor signal area, so if a phone had bad signal, I'd probably remember because I owuldn't have any signal at all.
This is really quite unacceptable. I took the OTA update and the lagging began. I've never had an issue with an OTA update. I've never done a factory reset after an OTA update either. Flashing custom ROM is different but this is from Samsung...
Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve daily reboots or a factory reset? I just find that really inconvenient.

Yes, I agree. It's hard to know at whom who to point the finger. Google, Samsung, or both. Regardless, it's very disappointing, and hurts my impression of both companies.
I'm currently allowing the phone to run for 7 days to see if the root method listed above by robyos may be feasible for my tmo s8.
If manually restarting is the only hurdle for you, it can now be set to restart automatically (I guess they anticipated this?) Settings > device care > three dots > auto restart.
It feels like a duct-tape band-aid, but it's there. After my 7 day test, I'll probably give this auto-restart a try. However, I'm concerned about the terribly annoying tmo jingle at each restart.

I'm thinking the problem may be googles not Samsung's...I had a OnePlus 5 for almost 2 years. At some point after the pie update it would stutter while scrolling or during animations intermittently. Even a factory reset didn't fix it. The phone was still fast but it was aesthetically annoying seeing the stuttering.
I drown the phone in the ocean on vacation this month and had to replace it so I got a used s8. I haven't had the same issue with scrolling but I've only had it for a couple weeks so far on a fresh wipe. It had some "normal" Samsung lag that the OnePlus didn't have while opening apps and it doesn't keep nearly as much in memory (4gb vs 8 GB RAM). But I'm still thinking the problem may be with pie itself since people were complaining about stuttering on both Samsung and OnePlus phones.
Hopefully my s8 is not affected and it's only certain ones experience it.

Wow! It's sad to hear an 8gb phone would still have the same issue. I wonder if this has to do with power management. Perhaps it's squeezing a tiny percentage of battery life out of saving some frames. It drives me crazy and gives me a headache. I wish they'd provide a simple switch for whatever this is.
This os feels like they ventured into breaking what works in an endless quest to fix what wasn't broken. Perhaps some team of programmers is celebrating minute improvements, but it's coming at the expense of the consumer, who never signed up to be the guinea pig. Each update seems to remove or break basic reliability and functionality that we paid for. I feel like I paid a premium price to become a software tester.
So reboots don't seem to fix the lag I'm experiencing when opening and closing certain apps. This phone was plenty fast before for me. Other issues are present now too. Auto adaptive display brightness doesn't work as well. I also really think it's sheet that you can't disable GPS and have the battery saving mode anymore! WTF Samsung.
