Can anyone tell me what the issue is pls - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cyanogenmod reminds me that there's an update available for my device but as I go ahead it reboots and tries to install the updates but kinda crashes or is not successful on getting its Job done.. And eather way further doesn't make any change. I tried both. It keeps reminding me about the new update I'm not very familiar with that stuff and would appreciate any help thanks in advance

I think you have lost your root access. Go to settings, developersoptions and you will see root access and choose app and adb.

No, root has nothing to do with this. I think your recovery is outdated. CWM is not being developed anymore if I'm not mistaken. Use TWRP recovery.
It's either that ore you have a faulty download.

Lost Root Running Damages Last Rom - What guide do I use to get my root back?

Some how I lost root access to my phone. I was having memory issues with the phone and after uninstalling everything it was suggested I install a memory manager. I did and it didn't work so I uninstalled it and I think my root access went with it.
At any rate I was instructed to open a command line on my phone and type SU and see what happens. I installed ConnectBot so I could get the command line access and typed SU and it came back access denied. So I guess that proves I lost my root access. But my question now is what guide do I use to get it back? The original guide I used said it was for v1.5. The other guides listed are for people that have done the OTA and have the Sprint 2.1 running on their phones. Well I'm in between and I have Damages 2.09.1 rom.
So what is my next move to get the root back? In reality do I need root at this point? What would happen if I just reflashed DC's rom again?
Help or comments will be appreciated.......
Lisa
You didn't lose root, you lost Superuser, search the DC2.8 thread about SU...
I did and either didn't find the right threads or didn't find the solution but I didn't get it fixed. All I found was that debugging needed to be checked and it is. Still no SU access. Give me. More help if you can......
Thanks...

Download superuser from the site below and flash it though recovery. That should fix it. Make sure to get the proper zip for your version of Android.
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Enhancements/Superuser-106560.shtml
Open your app drawer...Do you see anything that says Superuser Permissions?
What memory issues were you having? If it was storage problems, perhaps try Apps2SD -- usually takes care of any internal storage issues when you get it working. This thread here is for A2SD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715116
Reflashing the DC ROM really wouldn't hurt anything either, you'd just have to re-setup your accounts, preferences, etc. and redownload all your market apps.
Lots of good information in these two responses. I have some questions. First what Rom do I have? Cupcake, eclair, donut? Just know its DC's last Rom.
Next could you explain how to "flash from recovery". Is that done through Nandroid?
Next I do have SU in my app drawer. It will open and has a green button besides my to programs that use SU. But SU doesn't seem to be working.
Finally flashing the Rom again is something I want to avoid as I really don't want to start from scratch.....
Thanks for your help.........

These refer to versions of Android. You have 2.1 which is aka "eclair". 1.5 was aka "cupcake", 1.6 was "donut". Almost all ROMs here are 2.1 eclair, with the exception of the cyanogenmod which is android 2.2 aka "froyo".

No, it is done in recovery. To boot into recovery, hold Home then press Power on your phone. One of your recovery menu options will be "Flash zip from sd card". After you put any .zip files on the base/root of your SD card, this is how you will flash (or install) them. "Nandroid" only refers to the process of backing up and restoring your data, which is a separate option in the recovery console (Backup/Restore)
Did you try reinstalling the Superuser.apk? It may just need to be reinstalled.
Mr. chromiumleaf.....
Thanks so much for the information here. I have "flashed" from recovery but didn't realize that was what it was technically called. I have in my own terms refered to "Recovery Mode" as Nandroid. But now I will associate both as one. Thanks for clarifying what version Rom I'm running. I didn't want to guess so I asked. I think I will uninstall the Superuser that I have now and then reflash the new version that I will down load. I will report back. This would be so cool if this settled my problem............
So appreciate it and I will let you know..........
Lisa
I am following through as I alway do to thank you all for your help and tell you how I resolved the problem. I received some great advice from everyone and the last tip, which is usually my luck was the best.
The bottom line someone questioned why I thought I lost root. I explained what was going on and the best and final suggestion was to down load the latest Superuser.apk and flash through "recovery". Yes I had to ask exactly what that meant but I followed the directions and did it. Problem solved. I had SU working on my phone for Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. Then I downloaded Cachecleaner and it worked this time perfectly and it found 25MB of junk on my phone and cleared it out. So now I'm running 40MB of internal memory with all my programs working rather snappy now. In my estimation I screwed up the SU with the memory manager that was recommended somewhere along the line. When it didn't do anything for me I uninstalled it and I think my SU went with it. But the phone is fixed and I want to thank you all for your time in responding to my problem and requests. Sometimes multiple............
Thanks again.....
Lisa
Good to hear you got everything fixed. Glad to have helped out.
Yeah...and that's why there are people in this world more patient than I.

root issue

I updated my android to 4.3. since then I lost the root permissions. The phone shows as being unlocked when I start it up. when I have tried different programs or apps, I can't get the permissions back. One program I have tried, sorry, don't remember the name, said it was going to reboot the phone, but that never happened. I used it with my older version of android and it worked fine.
When I got into recovery mode, I the the android robot with the red !, saying no command.
I wanted to see if anyone knew what might be going on and what I could do to get back my permissions.
Thanks

Android 4.3 contains security fixes that require root to be updated. Download the SuperSu v1.55 zip from http://download.chainfire.eu/346/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.55.zip and copy the file to the Nexus' internal storage. Reboot the phone to recovery and install UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.55.zip from Clockworkmod or TWRP, then reboot the phone. You should now be able to grant privileges to the apps that require root access.

you updated stock, so you now have the stock recovery, thats the "dead" android. flash a custom recovery via fastboot, then flash the supersu su binaries via your new custom recovery. youll be fine, make sure to stay away from root toolkits or you will nwver learn anything, like this. this is such a basic thing to know to do, yet people that use root toolkits dont know.
OK, I'll have to try that tonight or over the next couple of days when I have a chance. Thank you.

if you dont know how, read a little. its really easy. its a matter of typing one line into a command window
OK, I've tried it, but it doesn't seem as if the computer is communicating with the phone. I have also tried one of the auto programs to do it, but it gets stuck at "waiting for device." If I reboot the device and try to get into recovery mode, I just get a dead android saying "no command" I can't get any other options to try to reset the devices back to factory settings.
I have tried the reset option in the settings menu, but It still saves information and doesn't take the phone back to 4.2, which is what I first had.
I'm hoping someone has some ideas on what I can do. On the other hand, I am planning on upgrading my wife's phone. I might just get a new one, and give her this one, although I'm not sure if I want to get a nexus, maybe a different one this time.

I did try to do it manually, the phone didn't respond. This is why I also tried a program. You are correct, I don't know what to do from this point.

you need to get the driver installed to your computer, fastboot as well. when its all ready, open fastboot and a command window then and type.. fadtboot devices. then itll see your device(or not if the driver isnt installed). when it sees your device, you need fastboot flash your recovery.. fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img. then you need to flash the latest su binaries via your recovery(latest supersu will work).

[Q] Phone has no recovery and other issues.

First want to say hi and that this site is full of knowledge so any help with my subject will be great.
Got a att s4 sgh-i337 phone. I rooted it before the lollipop ota update was out and everything went fine. Then the lollipop update came out and I followed one of the methods on keeping root and updating to 5.0.1 lollipop on the phone. Everything went fine with that. Still showed root status and never did the phone brick or have any issues in the updating.
At some point though, I did run triangle away because I would have the custom logo and opened padlock when the phone would boot up. I knew it wasn't a huge deal but the counter showed correct and never could just figure out how to get it to go away. Either way, I did run it and I think rebooting twice, the factory loading image came back to it. Now it shows my current status as 0 for the counter and the binary is Official.
I have not tried to load any roms or nothing like this to the phone, just followed the instructions to give it root access so I could run a few different apps and adaway for when I listen to Spotify.
One day, I was trying to install a new version of Words with Friends and it failed because I think wwf was open, but I did go back and install it. For some reason now, my phone never notifies my with a wwf notification when somebody plays me. Every now and then, it might pop up when I restart the phone but that is it. I don't think facebook notifies me everytime also but was more worried about words with friends.
Searching google, it says to go into recovery mode and flash the cache of the phone there. I have done the cache memory in the phone but that has not fixed my problem. When trying to go to recovery, it never works, it would always show, recovery booting and then load the phone up as normal.
I have download quick boot and rom manager since they all have an option to boot into recovery rather than pressing the buttons but it always does the same thing. Reading the web though, it seemed like I needed to install a different recovery than the factory I guess, so using rom manager, I tried twrp and that didn't work so I installed ClockworldMod 6.0.4.7. Rom manager shows that as the current recovery method.
When I try to boot into recovery, it still shows that recovery is booting and then goes straight to loading the phone as it should normally.
Now though, every time I restart my phone, it says recovery is trying to boot but never does.
How do I fix my phone to be able to boot into recovery and it not try to boot every time it powers on. I have tried searching google but I just just can find an answer to my direct problem. I know how to hold the buttons and go to recovery but does not work, and I also know how to get to it from the different app programs(rom manager and quick boot) but they do not work either. It would be nice to get the wwf notifications to work properly again also.
If you need any information from my phone, please ask. Thanks for any help on my matter,
Charlie
Odin stock and start over.
Apparently, you are not aware that the boot loader is locked, preventing the installation of a custom kernel. You can not use twrp, or rom manager. Rom manager itself may cause issues.
I agree you should flash back to stock and start over to get a clean install. Hopefully, this will solve the issues with notifications as well. You can use the "[GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap" by guut13 in the general forum for files and instructions.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really don't know a whole lot about rooting other than following instructions about it. I was unaware you could not use the twrp or cwr as a recovery. My recovery did not work before so that is why I was trying to install those. I knew you could not install custom roms but I did not know that you could not use rom manager to install custom recoveries.
I appreciate the help so far and I will look into that thread you mentioned. I haven't read it but will this take me back to stock lollipop 5.0.1 and I just reinstall apps or will I have to re-root the phone.
Charlie
please delete, sorry
Charlie
You have to go back to 4.4.4, to the nb1 base, root with towelroot, and then use the keeproot method to get back to 5.0.1 rooted. The instructions are in the guide, and also a link to the keeproot thread is there.
By the way, for future reference, questions, help and troubleshooting issues should go in the Q&A forum, not the general forum.
not having any luck
Ok guys,
I am trying to follow the guide but not having much luck.
I downloaded the I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar and put it in the AP Odin file. I'm not sure if I should be using it or the other file named I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar to begin with. The instructions said to use the first one so that is the one I was trying to use.
After putting the first file in the AP slot of Odin and hitting start, it begins to try to do it's thing and then says it fails!
What do I do now? Am I doing something wrong or what because I'm trying to follow instructions but not having much luck.
Please help. Sorry for posting in the wrong area also in the beginning.
Charlie
I'm screwed
Now when I turn my phone on, it says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again?
doing better now
Pretty sure I got it going finally. I changed cords and then changed ports on my computer and it finally did go back to stock without an error. I'm currently back on Lollipop and rooted so now is the fun of reinstalling contact info and anything else. So far I have not rebooted but it was not showing the recovery booting option when it did reboot. Hoping my notifications work properly now also!
Thanks!!!
Charlie

P9 Lite booting lock

Hi all, i'm new to Android Phones, so i started a few days with this phone. But now i think i've done a big mistake, i tried to erase everything from the phone, in a hope to "restore" to the factory state. Instead, i think i've deleted everything from the phone, and now, it only says "Your device is booting now..." and it doesn't boot. It's unlocked and rooted, i've deleted it from the TWRP menu.
So, is there anything that i can do, to restore it back? The model i think it's the VNS-L31, i'm downloading a firmware from the L21, can it be replaced or something like that? Thankx in advance.
*Edit* I found stock rom for my phone here in the fórum, but it says i need to have stock recovery but i have the TWRP recovery. Is there any way that i can do it, with that recovery?
*Edit 2* In Erecovery, when i try to download it says "Getting package info failed"
First of all... Why don't you have a backup in TWRP? ALWAYS back up your stuff before doing ANYTHING in TWRP.
Second: there is an option for factory reset within the EMUI system itself. Absolutely no need to mess around in TWRP for something like that. Of course you can "factory reset" in TWRP but this can also wipe your system which then requires you to flash something.
To your problem:
Since I luckily was not forced to flash a stock firmware yet, some more information would be nice.
In which format does the firmware come (link to where you downloaded it)? TWRP can handle .zip files. So if it comes as a .zip file, you can try flashing it through TWRP (really depends on what you downloaded!)
If you only need stock recovery, try accessing TWRP with your phone plugged into a PC.
This way it normally fires up the stock eRecovery.
Hi, yeah, i should have done a backup, thank you for the advice. The firmware i used is this one www .stechguide.com/huawei-p9-lite-marshmallow-firmware-b100/ - i found it here, and a user used it to, not sure why, but he says that it worked.
I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, because i'm new to this. The TWRP boot, but i can't get my phone to get recognized by the huawei software, not sure if it need to. Even with the drivers installed, it only connects if the phone is on the menu.

Hmm maybe best way is to send the user that made it work a PM and maybe he can provide you a guide on how to do it.
And maybe he or you can then provide a guide here on how to do it.
This device is rather new and the forum is building up so there is a lot of work to do and a lot of things have to be worked around.
Hope you can fix it, like I said, I cannot really help you properly since I never had the problem and therefore do not really understand what's happening on your device.
hi, thank you for the reply. In fact i have solved the problem few minutes ago, and was thinking on do a quick fix tutorial or something like that. Because it's really fast, just need to do the right way.
I'm really happy for the help i got in this forum, all the threads are really intersting. Going to try help others with the same problem that i had. Thank You

Always have a backup of your fresh system on TWRP. Then whatever happen just restore it whenever you think you messed up your device and you should be fine ALWAYS.

P9 Lite - can't access developer options and phone soft reboots when uninstalling app

Here's the story:
After I've broken my screen and voided my warranty. I've decided to root my phone. Some time after, I got a notification that a new system upgrade was released, which was supposed to update my phone to Nougat and EMUI 5.0. After I installed the update I've noticed that my root was gone. Eventually I've decided to root my phone back, but something went wrong.
Now I can't access developer settings, every time I click on it Settings crashes. And every time I go and try to uninstall an application the phone soft reboots.
I've tried to clear dalvik cache trough TWRP, didn't work.
I've done a factory data reset didn't fix anything.
I can't uninstall apps trough ADB since I need to enable USB debugging and I can't get to dev options.
I can't authorize the PC either because the authorization popup doesn't appear and I think it's because the dev options don't work. As such I can't use the toolkit to do anything.
I tried to follow the steps from the Unbricking tab from the toolkit: I flashed the boot, system, recovery, cust images and stopped at the point in the instructions where I had to use TWRP. I stopped because I can't flash TWRP anymore. I flashed it at least 10 times but it didn't work, every time I boot into recovery I get the stock huawei recovery.
Is there any way I can fix this, or is my phone "half bricked" for good?
Use dload to get back to mm and from mm use firmware finder and proxy instal b370 . PV . Don't instal anything else cuz everything else will make ur phone act like that again .

Sorry for taking so long, I've been pretty busy, but I finally got a chance to try what you said.
It worked, and it was very simple to do.
Thank you very much, I can use my phone as intended now.
I have one more question tough, if u don't mind. Since you said not to install anything else since the phone will act up again, does that mean there is no way to root my phone? And if there is, can you point me to a tutorial?
Again, thanks a lot.
