[Q] T-Mobile Mobile Hotspot App - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I've used this app before, the legal way, the app would work for a limited amount of time and then the devices connecting to my phone would rapidly connect and disconnect. This is visible on both my phone and the sharing device. Sometimes I could reset the problem by altering the wifi name or password or adjusting other settings, but usually the issue returned within 20 minutes.
I called T-Mobile and they were convinced I was having this problem because I rooted my device,so I unrooted and wiped my device, but the problem was still there. Then I called T-Mobile again and told them that I thought it was a hardware issue causing the problem. I got a new phone, and kept it stock, but the problem started up again. I called T-Mobile again and they felt that it was an app causing the problem, so they had me reboot in safe mode to prove it, but the problem persisted. At this point, they suggested that I contact Samsung directly to figure out the issue. When I was rooted, I was on KK, and now I'm on L.
Any ideas? Are there any other way I can share my Internet wirelessly while completely avoiding the T-Mobile app?

Why not use the 'Tethering and Portable Hotspot' option that is build into Android by default? I use it for at least 7 hours every day, never had a problem with it.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy 3 (just rooted) Data Outages

Greetings XDA members. I purchased my Galaxy S3 from AT&T back in July. Had no issues with data (HPSA+/4GLTE). Recently I rooted phone (no custom firmwares) for tethering purposes. Never tweaked with APN settings. Some reason my phone shows the 4G LTE symbol for connection but randomly when I go to access internet on any app I have no connection. I also dont receive any text messages (SMS or MMS). Only way around it is to send my phone into airplane mode then turn airplane mode off and I can surf fine and all my missed texts pop up all at once. I can be in exact same area and use data then randomly it stops functioning (repeat airplane mode procedure). I did research and some say it could be that sim card in the spring could have unaligned inside the phone. Tried that but to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Would downloading stock firmware/factory settings fix this issue? Below is details on my phone.
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-i747)
Android 4.0.4
Baseband I747UCLEM
Network APN: default AT&T PDA
I have unlimited data (used roughly 3.7gb) because I've tried the restorting to factory settings and google reinstalled all my apps couple times (forgot to use wifi instead of cell data). I figured maybe that was an issue that I used too much data and AT&T cuts me off. Im not sure if its the tethering app (only used once to test) did something to it. Phone worked fine for a couple weeks then randomly started cutting data out resulting in the airplane mode workaround.
Ok I've rambled enough. Final question: Is there a list that has AT&T Samsung Galaxy 3 SGH-i747 default APN settings so i can varify that mines weren't altered to cause this issue.
Thanks for reading and hopefully issue can be resolved. Thanks.

I just wanted to echo your problem. I have an AT&T S3 I747 and don't recall there being any network issues until I rooted my phone. I have unrooted, gone back to stock, and then even went back to stock ICS from JB and the network issue still seems to be there. I was curious if you found any ideas or fixes, or if anyone else has a fix or solution. I am running rooted stock Jellybean.
Im using my GS3 unroot with jelly bean 4.1.1 and dont seem to have the issue anymore. I went completely stock and I called AT&T to reset my data. Told them the issue I had (didnt mention i previously rooted) and rep reset my APN settings for my phone. I had to turn phone off for a few minutes then turned back on and all seems to work now. It still goes out sometimes but not as often since going from ics to jelly bean. Hope this helps. Dont think ill be rooting again anytime soon. Think problem started after I tried that free tethering/hotspot app for rooted users. This is messed with APN settings and caused problems.

Root by itself won't cause any issues. You used another app, in this case the tethering, which used root and messed up normal data on your phone. You can safely root just be careful what you do after that. Read, read, read.

My Tab is shy when it meets new networks

Whenever I am somewhere with a new network, my Tab is slow to recognize it. Sometimes the network will show up in the list of available networks for a brief moment, and then disappear before I can establish a connection. Other times I can connect by manually adding the SSID. Sent Sometimes turning the wifi off and then back on, or rebooting the Tab, works, but not always.
Most recently, I was in a place for almost an hour before it recognized the local network, even manually adding the SSID didn't help. The weird thing is, once it saw this network, it also saw several others in the neighborhood that previously were not shown on the list of available networks.
Once you I finally establish a connection, reconnecting to that network usually works without a problem.
Any thoughts?

Try a factory reset or if you are in any custom rom, try reflashing other rom.
Factoryreset willerase all your data so watch out.
Tried a factory reset... Didn't fix it. Here's the strangest thing: if I bring another network into the picture, all of a sudden it recognizes all the nearby networks. For example, right now I am in a place with 5 or 6 networks. Couldn't see any of them, until I fired up my cell phone's teather app, at which point it recognized not only the cell phone teather network but all of the others as well. It's almost as if it needs a new network to come along and wake it up. Other times though, it is my cell phone teather network that it won't see!

you need to mention if you have stock or non-stock, rooted or not, etc.
my best guess is that you are rooted and running a non-stock ROM. in this case, you should try another kernel. the wifi modules are the ones causing most of the problem, whatever the device. make sure you flash the proper wifi modules after the kernel!
otherwise... I would suggest to root. I heard all kind of crazy stories about our beloved Tab, so... don't fear trying different solutions until you get the one working for you.

Stock, not rooted. That's what makes this so frustrating - I haven't messed with anything, and it still doesn't work right! I'm running the most current Samsung android distribution for the Tab 10.1.
I've been avoiding rooting the Tab because one of the apps I use does a root check and won't run on a rooted device, but I think there is a workaround to that so rooting is definitely a possibility.
Rooting the device won't be sufficient in itself to solve this problem - I'd need to root and then install a different kernel, right? Or are there wifi modules I can install on top of the stock kernel (once I root the device)?
Any ideas on why this is happening and how I might fix it, short of rooting and installing a non-stock version of Android? My temporary fix is that I fire up FoxFi on my cell phone, and once the Tab sees the FoxFi network, it all of a sudden "sees" the other networks as well. But I've had several situations where I have my tablet but not my cell phone, and in those instances I can't get the Tab to recognize the new networks, even if I reboot the Tab or try messing around with the various networking settings. Note that a factory reset didn't fix this either.
Never mind - broke down and installed CM10.1.
I was having a similar issue on stock. I rooted and have since installed a few roms. I am a Much bigger fan of my tab now. I used infamous for a while and am now on the paranoid android 3.50 build which is awesome!
CM10.1 solved the shy network problem for me... And my tab is much more reliable now too.

My s4 doesn't show APN

I've got an SPH-L720.
I just purchased two of these as an upgrade today. I have a great connection (even airave) and I am having network connectivity issues. When trying to send SMS it usually won't go through and the data rarely works even though it says it should. This goes for both new phones. I read the APN might need to be set back to default for some reason, I haven't done anything with these phone yet. I have tried factory resetting already.
Help?
Since they are new phones. I have noticed that they have a hard time connecting to.an airave. I've had my gs4 for 2 months now and still only connects to my airave about 15% of the time.

I thought of the possibility of the Airave being the issue. I'll go ahead and turn it off and see if that helps. One of the phones is now working /Okay/ and mine refuses to do any SMS or data.

Wifi won't connect to open network. Connecting, then saved.

I tried searching this fourm, online, and no results after countless hours.
This is my problem. At work there is one big open network with a lot of extenders everywhere. When I got my new phone phone from BB when I broke my screen I tried to connect to it and it says " Connecting...." for a few seconds then automatically goes to "Saved".
I tried the obvious, forgetting network, rebooting phone, restoring to factory, updating firmware, nothing has worked so far. It always goes from connecting to saved. Every other device has worked flawlessly besides this phone
My last few phones have had no problem connecting. I do not have the authority to reboot the whole system, change frequently, add a pw, basically I'm only allowed to connect.
Wondering if anyone has experienced this problem, and might have any ideas or solutions. This is the only network that has ever gave me a problem.
Thanks for taking your time to read and help!

Funny thing... I just got a brand new galaxy note 3 and it does the same thing... Making me think something with this Wifi setup and the galaxy family phones are not getting along. I'll try and see if I can talk to the Web tech and see if he can tweet something to get it to work.

Phone randomly no longer recognizes SIM (or WIFI), second time on same phone

I'm on T-Mobile network and had an issue two weeks ago where the phone randomly disconnected from the mobile network and stopped recognizing the SIM. T-Mobile store changed the SIM but it made no change so they offered to replace it but after a hard reset it magically worked.
Today I got the same issue and now the phone doesn't connect to the network (or WIFI for that matter). Before I do another hard reset I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has had the same issue and if there is a suggested fix. I'm pretty stumped on this one.
I'm not rooted but the phone is unlocked through T-Mobile and I received the OnePlus unlock code but haven't done anything with it. Currently on the 10.0.27 build.

Were you on 10.025 build when it first started? If it's happening with multiple phones on multiple software versions,it makes me wonder if you need to file a ticket with T-Mobile on your line. If the Wi-Fi issue is happening only on the newer firmware, it could be the Wi-Fi was a coincidence and that there is something wrong with your network settings on T-Mobile'a side.
10.0.27 could have a Wi-Fi bug, as I'm hearing a few reports to this happening to a few people. But the mobile data side suggests something happening outside of your phone.
I know it's kind of a long shot, but it's what would make sense overall if this is happening on your replacement phone as well.
I don't recall if I was on 10.025 when it first happened, though I want to say I wasn't as I don't believe I have done any updates since it happened. I don't know why the WIFI is also happening, but bluetooth still works just fine (I didn't mention that in the beginning). When I try to select the "SIM & Network" menu in Settings it seems to freeze. If I file a ticket with T-Mobile I believe they would simply want to replace my phone entirely (that's what they were working on the last time I brought this issue to their attention). Just a point of clarification, I'm still using the original phone and having the issue a second time, when a full hard reset (with erasing personal data) seemed to resolve the problem, at least temporarily.
It sucks because I could just reset the phone again and probably fix it but it's a pain to continually restore all the settings, apps, and settings within each app. I could also replace the phone but then I will be getting a locked phone and will have to go through the unlock process again (which I could do, it wasn't all that bad).
