Solution
Hi, I have had this issue for weeks. I read through many threads looking for a solution. I was reluctant to do a factory reset after all the customization that I had done however to get rid of this annoying (disease) I did the following:
1. I downloaded smartswitch pc . connected my Note 5 and took a full backup. (data included)
2. from sammobile I downloaded the exact (EXACT) firmware that is on my device. (no available update yet)
3. restarted to download mode and flashed the firmware in odin.
4. to my surprise i did not have to do a restore as my data was not lost(apps passwords media etc.. intact). however root and all mods done to the system was reverted back to normal or removed.
5. i re flashed cf autoroot restarted and flashed twrp.
now i have root recovery and my Snote and direct pen input are back to working normally.
NOTE: it worked for me. these exact steps as all ops do please do a full backup first in case things go wrong. I will not put any links as they may vary with your device. I have a Galaxy note 5 SM-N920G and those steps worked for me. the only app i cant use is Samsung Pay. However android pay works fine. hope i helped someone....
Hi,
I just recently bought a used Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition on ebay. it was a factory unlocked version from singapore from a highly rated seller
This is the tablet ebay item number 281216040890
It is the 32GB 4G LTE Model with a snapdragon 800 chip inside, model name SM-P605.
I started it up and it had Android 4.3 Installed on it with the older interface, the s pen and everything else worked fine just a little laggy. literally every 10.1 2014 edition I had been seeing around had the 4.4.2 Kitkat Update
So I decided to update it myself and maybe a custom rom afterwards.
1) I downloaded an official 4.4.2 Rom from live.samsung-updates
2) Afterwards I downloaded the CF Auto Root files from chainfire
3) And finally I dowloaded the TWRP recovery from here teamw.in/project/twrp2/207
I'm a new user and i'm not allowed to post outside links by the way so I couldn't post direct links. I'm also going to post this in the Note 10.1 troubleshooting section just to get a wider response.
I followed all the steps to update. Step one went well but then I reached step 2 and I bricked my device after flashing the CF Auto Root, I had a static like screen and went into an automatic infinite boot recovery loop, absolutely no way to turn it off so I had to hold the download mode buttons for like 20 seconds to thankfully get back into download mode. I tried this over 5 times, the CF Auto Root was always bricking my device.
So I skipped step 2 and went straight to step 3 but his time the TWRP recovery menu was faulty and not working at all like it should, tapping button A would open Process D etc. I think this might have been because I didn't have root access.
So I just decided to not have any root and just rock the stock official 4.4.2 like that, then guess what. THE S PEN DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE!!!!
It shows "s pen has been detached" when removed and the air command menu shows up but the floating pointer is missing and no taps, clicks, jotting or writing registers LIKE AT ALL!!!. I know its not the pen because the tablet s pen works fine on my note 3.
I've reinstalled the 4.4.2 firmware multiple times, multiple regions, wiped partition, done factory resets etc. The tablet portion works perfectly but No S pen.
the note 10.1 without the spen is like having a galaxy tab 4 10.1 inch tablet it's just a tablet now with no s pen.
The knox counter has tripped and samsung canada and usa are telling me the baseband version in not north american so they can't help me.
AM I REALLY THIS SCREWED???. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO OR TRY.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Spen
Look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782528&page=9 the answer to fix your s-pen is in their. Hope it helps you.
Hi, it seems you have not installed the lastest twrp version. They 'very fixed the problem there. And this works fine with stockrom.

Hi,
I had a few questions about flashing my phone and potentially updating to kitkat.
I would appreciate having my answers in same form as questions thanks!! (sorry for being so picky)
1. I heard Kitkat does not allow you to backup apps or modify folders in the sdcard is there a work around to this? (the reason is because I use a program called Es Explorer to move files from folder to folder.)
2. I have a Canadian note 3 (SM-N900W8) I want to get the S5 layout and features such as Ultra Saving Mode onto the Note 3 without losing any of the key features from Note 3 like s pen functionality. Is this possible if so please leave a guide to performing this
3. To get the S5 features onto my Note 3 will I have to first update to Kitkat or can I stay at 4.3,?
4. Will I be able to get OTA software updates on my Note 3 even after I port the S5 features?
5. Before I do any flashing or modifying How can I BACK EVERYTHING ON MY PHONE to ensure NOTHING IS LOST.
6. Finally, will I have to first unlock my phone to flash or mod it?
THANK You!
I appreciate your time.
You can get all of that by flashing ported s5 rom like the RC elite rom , and no your device will be modified so no OTA but you don't need it anyway
Before flashing backup your stock rom in the custom recovery so nothing get lost
Make sure to backup your IMEI before flashing anything.
Go to Play Store and enter 'IMEI Backup' to search for IMEI backup app.
1. It works perfectly fine for me on KitKat
2. Yep the rom link and guides is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-canadian-v17-rcelite-t2840523 (imo the rom is very snappy and good! All the full S5 features and look without compromising on SPen functionality )
3. You have to flash kitkat first
4. Well you can't get OTA updates for the Note 3 firmware, but you will get OTA updates for the rom!
5. You can do a nandroid backup, copy all files to computer or backup with KIES 3
6. Nope
N9005 NH1 32GB Stock debloated rooted ROM
Hi everyone. I just flashed back to stock (Koodo official firmware) to sell my Note 3 and now my back hardware button isn't working. I have searched the web and to no avail. Could someone please give me an idea of what I can do to fix this? Thank you!!
Which note 3 is it?
SM n900W8
I have the same model. I haven't used it for a while. I powered it on a few days ago to take the update from doc4 to doh1. I just tried the back and menu buttons using the doh1 ROM and they seem to work fine.
A friend of mine has the same phone and he flashed the doh1 ROM from sammobile.com over a rooted doc4 RIM and he also has no problems.
Both of us were using custom ROMs with a 4.4.2 bootloader and we both flashed back to stock using sammobile.com's doc4 ROM before moving to doh1.
I ended up flashing a stock n9005 zip TW rom and it is fixed - but I had to install TWRP again etc. Thanks for the help though!
Glad you got it fixed but I'm not sure I was much help.
Partially solved..
Hi.
I have done everything trying to solve this and can confirm the next:
1st: If you go back to Kit Kat, the capacitive buttons start to work again. Then you are offered a couple of OTAs (one after the other to get you to DOH1). After the first OTA, the buttons stop working again.
So first solution: stay on Kit Kat (probably not what we want).
2nd: Flashing a custom Cyanogenmod based firmware works, I used latest temasek's build, I am testing it to see if I can keep it.
3rd: I tried erasing almost every single partition (system/cache/dalvik(art?) cache) and flashing from scratch DOH1... wont work.
According to what I have read all around there is a system file that controls the capacitive buttons, probably that file is getting weird with the upgrade, I still need to install a official rom, root it and try to edit such file.
It's strange that some phones have no problem while others do. My friend and I have no problems but we weren't running custom ROMs before the doc4 or doh1 updates.

I wasn't running anything custom. I was on Official ROM (no root no anything, just Stock Samsung Software) as always with my Note 3. It was just that the DOH1 update make the damages.
Now I think I gotta stick to Cyanogenmod given this problem, unless Samsung says something and fix the thing.
Does this happen with TW-based custom ROMs too?
Dont know. As of now, I am trying to flash DOH1 again on top of KitKat 4.4.2

They say clearing the Cache of the Samsung Keyboard fixes the thing. Wont be able to test by myself til tomorrow

I have N900W8 bell version, using it on Virgin network.
worked flawlessly with KitKat (either with Bell or Virgin version).
I've only experimented with Note-based custom roms (KitKat only), since I need the pen functionality.
First attempt:
I have experienced the same, not properly working menu button and not working back button.
I was on rooted stock KitKat 4.4.2 (N900W8VLUCNB7 Firmware Virgin mobile version), rooted with Chainfire CF-auto root (Build ID:KOT49H.N900W8VLUCNB7) using Odin. (all the buttons working properly)
Upgraded to Lollipop 5.0 (N900W8VLU2DOH1) with Odin, rooted same way with CF-auto root (Build ID:LRX21V.N900W8UBU2DOL1). (Buttons do not work)
Second Attempt (No rooting involved what-so-ever):
Reverted back to stock KitKat 4.4.2 (N900W8VLUCNB7 Firmware Virgin mobile version, clean flash), all the buttons working properly.
Did OTA update through Wifi to, assuming, N900W8VLU2DOC4. (Buttons do not work)
Another OTA update through Wifi to N900W8VLU2DOH1(confirmed). (Buttons do not work)
For both of above attempts, buttons are working properly with KitKat, whether it was rooted or not, and not with Lollipop, whether it was rooted or not. I'm thinking it's just the lollipop issue.
Third attempt (using N900W8VLUCNB7 Firmware Bell version):
Reverted back to stock KitKat 4.4.2 (N900W8VLUCNB7 Firmware Bell version, clean flash), all the buttons working properly.
Did OTA update through Wifi to N900W8VLU2DOC4. (Buttons do not work)
Another OTA update through Wifi to N900W8VLU2DOH1(confirmed). (Buttons do not work)

Do you have the link for the stock Tom zip?
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using XDA Free mobile app
Ok. Pretty much tried everything while staying on stock firmware.
However, everything else seems to work okay other than the touch button.
So now im gonna root the stock lollipop and use xposed and gravitybox to manually remap the 2 touch keys. Will update
Hell yeah(excuse my language, but I'm so happy), I got this working!
Before I start listing my steps, please thank wrench588 here for me to find a confirmed working solution, and
thank stew721 here for the original post!!
No root on a stock lollipop (N900W8VLU2DOH1) Virgin firmware on Bell phone
1. Clean flash with N900W8VLU2DOH1 Virgin firmware on odin. (I'm guessing you actually wouldn't even need to do this step, if you are already on lollipop (N900W8VLU2DOH1 or N900W8OYADOC4 firmware)4N900W8
- I got my stock firmware from here
2. Download idlekernel here
- For Odin flash: download idleKernel-hlte-can-6.6.5.tar.md5 (for Canadian galaxy note 3 SM-N900W8)
- For recovery flash (ie. twrp): download idleKernel-hlte-can-6.6.5.zip (for Canadian galaxy note 3 SM-N900W8)
3A. For Odin,
a. open Odin
b. load into download mode (by holding Power+Volume Down+Home key together when turning on the device)
c. Load the idleKernel-hlte-can-6.6.5.tar.md5 into the "AP" on Odin
d. "Start" on Odin
3B. For Recovery(TWRP or CWM),
a. Boot normally and copy idleKernel-hlte-can-6.6.5.zip into your phone
b. flash idleKernel-hlte-can-6.6.5.zip file in recovery
Done.
Thank you so much again, wrench588 and stew721. I could not be happier
Next step for me would be getting my stock rom to get deodexed so I can install "xposed". I need to replace the function of holding "menu" touch button to pop up google search instead of S finder.

Hey , has anyone firgured out how to get rid of the "unfortunately Knox has stopped working" ? I had the same issue with the softkeys not working. This fix works but I get this message. I was also told to try flashing a PIT file with stock firmware to fix the softkey issue, but this did not work.
Maybe flashing supersu from TWRP will allow supersu to disable knox?
not to bring back a dead thread, but this is exactly what I needed. I needed to root to fix screen mirroring so I just used root uninstaller to delete knox.
Hey everyone, I'm fairly familiar with rooting phones, been doing it since the Galaxy S2. I have an issue however, that I've never encountered.
I followed the rooting process on this page:
Root N900W8VLU2DOC4 Android 5.0 Stock Firmware On Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900W8 - Simple Tutorial
After the initial booting of the phone, I no longer have soft key functionality. This makes navigating the phone incredibly difficult.
I have a temporary fix - the 4 square icon that you enable in the accessibility menu that gives you access to the menu and back button.
This is not a HUGE deal as I plan on trying different kernels, recoveries, roms, etc. But the functionality is a problem if I ever plan on restoring my backup of the original (now rooted) firmware.
I've seen a couple of posts on here already about the soft key problem, however they have no replies.
Hoping someone can help!
TIA,
Mike
I recommend flashing a stock rom, then flash twrp, and then flash supersu from twrp.
