[Q] Grand 2 Default Storage Concern - Galaxy Grand 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a concern regarding how Kitkat update resolves the default storage on my Grand 2. First of all I want you to know that I have already rooted and updated the permission.xml file to allow apps such as utorrent to be able to write in sdcard and this is working wonderfully for me. So my question here is how do I default my storage to sdcard for things such as phone screenshots, line images, viber images, instagram images etc.
Sorry for requesting about this but I'm OC like that and seeing my gallery having two same folders(one under sdcard caused by jb update, one under internal storage caused by Kitkat update) from two different locations is what I would like to eliminate. I have scoured the internet for solutions and I have only stumbled upon the following solution. First is to update the init file by switching the symlink declared for emulated/sdcard0 with the extsdcard. Not sure though how to do this or if it is safe. Second is found on this website --> https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-porting/SypD_roN_28
TIA for your help.

How To Fix KitKat SD Card Write Restriction

In the last few days Samsung has been pushing out Android 4.4.2 to flagship devices like the Galaxy
Note III and Galaxy S4. Unfortunately, Google implemented an SD card write restriction in the latest
Android version which can be quite annoying for users with an SD card in their phone.
The new “feature” basically restricts apps from writing to external SD cards. This can be quite
annoying, because many users want to store apps on a secondary SD card instead of the main storage
unit.
Luckily, how to fixing this problem can be easily done if you have root access. Here’s how you can do it
(Please be aware that you’re performing these changes on your own risk!):
Make sure that you have root access
1. Perform a NANDROID backup to be completely safe
2. Use a root-enabled file manager and navigate to /system/etc/permissions
3. Edit platform.xml and find “WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE“
4. Add an additional group definition for this permission: <group gid=”media_rw” />
5. Save the changes and restart your device
6. You are now able to write on your external SD card again
I hope that I was able to help you.

This does not work for Sygic. My rom comes with this setting already applied, and yet Sygic gives me
Code:
SD Card access denied
Work!!!
Thank you very much!!!
Your strategy work fine on my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
You can also install "Kitkat SDcard full access" it's an xposed module
It works on my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini but only for a limited time after restart the phone. I have last nighty of CM11. It seems like something check permissions and change it back. But everything is on the place. Permission hasn't changed. When I open Folder mount application the message "write permission is not set correctly" occurred but media_rw group is still in system/etc/permission file. I've tried to install CM12 but the problem is there too. Kitkat SDcard full access module from xposed hasn't solved the writing issue for me. It works but after sometime doesn't.

A simplified answer:
Google changed the permissions of third party apps regarding external storage due to security concerns.
In KitKat third part apps aren't able to read/write to sdcard unless the apps are updated and they generate a folder separately for that app. Even then they only have access to that folder and no other. System apps will still be able to read and write so stuff like My Files from Samsung still has full control.
This is what it means in a nutshell.

So things like downloading a ringtone from the web browser or using my otg cable or using a torrent client will not be affected? I also noticed that in application manager if I click on some of the apps it shows the move to sd card as greyed out and others it shows it as highlighted is this normal? And also I noticed that when I go into my sd card the folders for a lot of my apps are there but the size of my card for storage amount has not dropped is this normal and does it really affect the average joe who's not big into tinkering with Android os?

The torrent client and browser will need to be updated if they aren't already or you can use the stock (system app) browser. But no, basically those things will not be affected and should work just fine.

Ok dudes I will just go about using it like as per usual. Thanks for the help guys!
If you have rooted your note 3 then it is possible to modify a system file to give all non system apps that for example you have downloaded from play store to behave as they would before kit kat changed write permission.
See this post for details of how to edit the file to allow apps to be able to write to your sd card.
Fairly easy to do, just have to use any file editor to add a single line in a system file.

Alternatively someone has posted that they have written an app to do this on play store.
I can't find link to this at the moment.
Will edit this post If I find the post.

Lollipop - cannot write to external SD card in spite of granting permission [SOLVED]

This new permissions policy for apps writing to the external SD card is doing my head in. I have the stock, rooted, Polish Lollipop 5.0 ROM on my N9005. Dropbox refuses to write to the SD card and gives me a storage full or unavailable error. I'm well aware of how to set permissions for each app that requests it but Dropbox doesn't even ask for permission! Dropsync is even worse, it asks for permission to write to the SD card and I grant it and is displays a message saying that all is OK but when I try to sync I get a storage unavailable error. Similarly, Dolphin browser refuses to save anything to the SD card and doesn't request permission. I've reformatted my SD card using Android, tried a different SD card, cleared the cache for the affected apps, signed in & out of Dropbox but with no success. I don't think the SD card fix apps for Kitkat will work for Lollipop. Can anyone solve this?
Thanks
I emailed dropbox support & they have the answer:
Thanks for writing in, I will be happy to help you with your file issue.
It appears that these duplicate documents were added from the "Samsung Device" app. Samsung created a new deep Dropbox integration for their devices that allows access to all documents in your Dropbox account from a special "DocumentSync" folder on your phone. This DocumentSync feature allows you to add, edit, and delete any files that appear in this folder and these modifications will show up both on your phone and in Dropbox.
We've worked with Samsung on a fix for this duplicate file problem and it should be released sometime soon. In the meantime, if files are still being replicated, you can temporarily disable DocumentSync until the fix is released.
DocumentSync is different from the Dropbox application on your phone and disabling the DocumentSync feature will not impact the Dropbox app. You can turn off DocumentSync on your phone by following these instructions:
1. Tap your device’s “Menu” button
2. Tap “Settings”
3. Tap “Cloud”
4. Tap “Documents” or “DocumentSync”
5. Toggle off
You can also disable this app from the Dropbox website. To do this:
1. Log in to https://www.dropbox.com/account#security
2. Under "Apps linked" find the Samsung Device app.
3. Click the small "x" at the far right of where it says Samsung Device.
Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused, but I hope this helps! Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.
Regards,
Randy
I think the way ahead is to uninstall the Samsung Dropbox app with Titanium Backup but when I do this it keeps coming back. How would I go about hacking it out with Root Explorer?

SD Card, Gallery, Whatsapp Media Access Problems on CM14.1/ Related ROMS

Hello everyone, I'm a new user here.
I'm experimenting with my Moto G4 Plus (XT1643), and have tried the latest versions of CM14.1, Resurrection Remix 5.8.0, yet.
I was facing many such problems as :
1. Unable to set Contact pics.
2. Access denials when trying to access media from different applications such as Whatsapp, Messenger, Instagram.
3. Music/ Video access problems.
All of which I pegged to permission related problems ( a mere hunch) and found that few others have encountered such problems, who have reported them on the main thread.
However, I cannot post on them, being a newbie.
I found a workaround to the problem. If this helps, I'd be happy to help you.
1. Go to TWRP Recovery.
2. Advanced > Terminal (a live Emulator doesn't do the work even with root access, I don't know why)
3. Change permissions for required folders.
Eg. For WhatsApp, go to the sdcard and
Execute "chmod 775 WhatsApp"
Which basically changes permissions to Read/Execute for the folder and subfolders.
This can be done for the entire sdcard as well, that's your choice.
It works for me, I don't face the problems anymore.
Tell me if it does for you

Well, yeah, but that might be an option many won't take before flashing a custom ROM. Most just wipe cache and data.

How to disable batt_health process in MotoG4 RR

Hi,
This is related to a previous thread where internal memory gets full, which was solved temporarily.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/help/rr5-8-4-athene-internal-memory-filled-t3678840
I am using
[ROM][OFFICIAL] Resurrection Remix v5.8.5 [7.1.2_r29][XT16xx][athene] + Magisk + ElementalX on Moto G4 Plus with 128 GB SD card as adopted storage.
The internal memory was getting full within a week, and with the help of suggestions received, I located that /data/power_supply_logger had .csv log files which were 20GB+ in size. So I deleted them and solved the problem at the time.
Then it repeated in a week I had the same issue. the log files grow about 2 MB every minute. I removed write permissions to the folder and deleted the file.
I noticed that since I removed the permissions to write, the battery life really got longer and the phone also charges much quickly now. Some users pointed out that battery was charging slowly in RR - I faced that problem too and it looks like has gone away. I would like to make it a bit cleaner - a process making an attempt to write every minute and failing is got a good work around.
Using AppsSD I found that /system/bin/batt_health running as mot_pwric user is attempting to write every minute and now that the permission is removed the attempt is failing.
Is there a way I can disable this process - it is not listed in Apps or System apps.
Or if anyone knows how to disable logging by batt_health, that would be better.
Thanks
Sreekumar
Maybe some of your apps are logging there?! I have this folder too, but empty.
/system/bin/batt_health running as mot_pwric user is the process logging it. How to disable this process - or if it is spawned by an app, how to locate the parent app.

My suggestion: Just install the rom and gapps mini/pico or beans mini and see if it logs again. If not: install ONE of your 3rd party apps, see if it happens again. If not, install the next one and so on.
Maybe you have switched something on in Rom settings?

I too have this folder and is showing 1.01mb in size.
I cut out read acces to batt_health and it seems nothing has changed.
Also i search folders for battery stats and all are nrml to me.
All of them combined also im not getting more than 10+mbs.
Idk what u have been using or any particular reason for you
I'll suggest clean flash your rom. Use verified gapps and restore backup of apps only and not data. If and if only you need that data restore it.
Use device for 3 to 4 days and see if problem exist.
OK. I will try these suggestions and see if goes away.
