Backup help - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new here. I have an issue with the recovery images that i try to apply. I made a backup of my phone using twrp and when i loaded up a bunk rom i immediately went to go back to my stock image and it wont get past the loading screen. just sits there. I have two phones and used the second one to make a backup with cwm recovery and nandroid backup. everything is looking good as far as the backing up, but when i go to install the backup i get errors such as error flashing boot and what have you. I am on the i337z ( cricket variant ) S4. I can install custom roms but they litterally take forever and a day to load up and when it does the wifi wont work or the mobile data wont work. nothing. Im lost. Please help XDA community.

[Q] Something went wrong, Stuck in cwm and can't restore a backup?

Hello all,
I recently switched to the Fascinate from the HTC Incredible. So far I have rooted and installed cwm. I got the Super Clean ROM and one of jt's voodoo kernels installed. The kernel was the 12/14 version from Rom Manager. Everything was going fine and I had finally gotten everything how I wanted it. Then I though oh how bout a theme now.
Apparently that wasn't the right thing to do. I download the zip and boot into red recovery to install. I make a nandroid backup and continue to install the zip. Upon installing the theme I reboot the device. Then it just boots into stock recovery. So I think oh no that's not good. I apply update.zip to get into cwm, but then green cwm pops up intead of red. Also an error also pops up saying E: can't open /cache/recover/log. At first I didn't really think anything of it so I continue to try to restore my backup I just made. No luck. So I try to reinstall the kernel and ROM I had downloaded. No luck. All I get is errors and I dont really know how to get back into red cwm.
Now I am stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been searching for solutions all day and I can't really find anything with my particular problem.
Which theme did you flash?
It was through rom manager. Something from blackhole. I don't remember exactly to be honest.
Ok I'm not sure if I made it better or worse. I took the sd card out and put it into my moto droid. I then created the disable_lagfix folder in the voodoo files. Then I put the card back in my phone. I tried flashing the stock DL09.tar through odin and now it is stuck in a loop. Samsung screen pops up then immediately runs a factory reset and does it all over again.

[Q] Recovery Issue

Hello,
I recently installed CyanogenMod to check it out. Decided it wasn't for me, so I tried to restore my backup that I did via Rom Manager.
It restores everything with no errors, however when the phone loads, none of my applications show up on the Home screen. I can see them in my applications list as "com.poynt.andoid" for example, but I can't open them. Even the Market doesn't show up on the home screen.
When the phone first loads, it has the wallpaper that I originally set, but it says please wait while loading... then it switches everything over to factory settings.
I tried searching for a solution online but could not find one, so I'm sorry if this is an easy fix that I could have found somewhere else.
The first time I restored the backup, I did it via Rom Manager when I still had CyanogenMod. Then I tried doing it directly through ClockworkMod Recovery when I booted to recovery.
Thanks for any help you can give me!
Just so we have an idea of what you did:
1. What ROM were you on before?
2. Did you wipe data/cache/etc. before restoring your backup?
3. Were you using A2SD at all?
I was on the stock HTC ROM.
I did wipe data/cache/etc from ClockworkMod Recovery before restoring.
Was not using A2SD.
Btw I'll donate to anyone that helps me fix the problem...don't expect charity support! Lol.

[Q] Boot Loop

I've had my AT&T SGS4 for about 3 weeks. Rooted on day one and running a custom recovery (shabbypenguin's CWM) since since the exploit was released. Finally had some time this weekend and decided to take a new ROM for a test drive. I began by making a nandroid backup. Once the backup completed successfully I accidentally started another backup instead of just rebooting. I let it run its course but the second backup failed, probably due to insufficient space on my device. I select reboot device and get stuck at the at&t splash screen. Multiple battery pulls later and I still cant get it to fully boot up.
Fortunately, I'm still able to boot into recovery but now I have a dilemma. I have 2 backup files:
1970-01-20.03.09.08
1970-01-20.03.18.31
Which one is the first backup file I created (i.e. the one that completed successfully)?
Is it the one with the earlier time stamp? This would seem logical but for the fact that every time CWM runs on our phones it resets to 1970. So do I want the one with the later time stamp (i.e. the one that took longer to run from the default time stamp)?
What would happen if I try to restore the incomplete nandroid? Do I run the risk of losing recovery all together?
Hope the above makes sense. Any help would be appreciated.
Try both....the worst that can happen is that it fails. If one fails then u know it's the other one.

Really...he's right try both.
Tried both. The first failed on restoring system data. The second never made it past verifying md5. Did a system restore but it kept rebooting shortly after startup.
Luckily I had already downloaded shostock's rom and was able to load with no issue. Just wish I had backed some stuff up before making the plunge.

[Q] Wiping didn't work, messed up restore - now can't boot into TWRP

First time flashing CM, and I may have messed up.
I rooted, installed TWRP, everything went perfect. I made a backup, and then tried to do a factory wipe. The wipe ended with the messages "unable to mount /system", "... /cache" and another one. I still tried to flash, and it just immediately got stuck, nothing happened. I rebooted, and everything worked fine. It was the Samsung stock image and all my apps were still there. I'm assuming it just didn't wipe at all.
I then went full retard mode, and tried to do a restore. I wanted to be sure my phone wouldn't fail on me in the recent future because some random stuff may have been partially wiped or something. Feel free to tell me I have the IQ of a chimp.
This completely messed things up, as it just got stuck at "Restoring System...". Eventually I restarted it with the power button. Now it can't boot normally, it can't boot into recovery mode, which just leaves download mode.
Any way I can fix this and subsequently install CM properly? I'm using TWRP 2.6.3.0. I've been told it's recommended to use 2.5, as the other version may have some issues (including not being able to recognize partitions). Only download mode still seems to work, so maybe there's a way to flash my phone back into the living world?
Versions:
Team Win Recovery Project 2.6.3.0
CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (RC2 jfltexx)
Thanks!
No idea really but maybe try to flash default rom/recovery etc with odin?
I've had this problem. Seeing as you only have download mode you have to flash a stock Rom and start again. Recoveries for our phone are still I development. Use official CMW to install CM, using links in Op.

I got the Samsung stock ROM of july, flashed it using download mode, and everything was back! I then rooted it again, and installed CMW (see versions below). I went into recovery, and tried to do a backup. It told me it failed: "Error while making a backup image of /data!". I then wondered if it may have been due to a lack of storage (which could very well be, as that was the issue before and the old backup by Teamwin was probably still on it somewhere), so I rebooted my phone. That's when it just failed and kept showing the Samsung logo at boot. I tried flashing my ROM again, again the logo. Then I did a factory reset using the regular recovery (cache and data reset), which fixed it. Now all my apps and data are gone, but that's no problem.
I'm back at the unrooted Samsung stock image now. Any ideas what I did wrong? These were the versions I used:
CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505
i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2(0611)
Odin3 v3.07
I did nothing more than root, install CMW, try a backup and then it all went to ****. I'm surprised a backup can even do that.
Mmm I'm not too familiar with the internal workings of backups. Perhaps something was corrupted during flashing? Glad to hear that you have got your phone working again. There is an updated version of CMW somewhere in the original development thread.

i've had the exact same issue.
I did go back to stock firmware and recovery, rerooted(chainfire) and installed the latest CWM 6.0.3.6.
Then, i did download Jamals Google play 4.3 rom, placed it on my SDcard and did follow the instructions. Works like a charm, and i've got noe clue what happened to my phone. however, it works now.

I tried CMW 6.0.3.6 and the Google Play 4.3 ROM as you said, and it works perfectly! I didn't try a backup this time, as it didn't exactly have anything to back up anymore.
Finally my precious vanilla Android again, I missed it since I switched from my Galaxy Nexus to my S4. Thanks a lot guys!
Edit: I do seem to be having one issue. Quite frequently after it's booted, and I enter the SIM pin, the message "Unlocking SIM card..." stays there indefinitely. I can use the phone but the message covers everything up. This doesn't always happen, but quite often. I've read some ROMs can't handle SIM lock, like CM. This is a Google Play edition, however. Is it normal that this doesn't work?
I can seem to fix it by holding the power button, and choosing "Unlock SIM" from the menu. I guess it's not that bad as I don't often reboot my phone.

tried that AT LEAST three times no luck
You should be able to recover from any problem scenario you cause in recovery, using ODIN
Stock ROM from sammobile, maybe you'll need a PIT file to re-partition the phone, there is a thread on XDA in these S5 forums with PIT files
EDIT - 2nd post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737448
After wiping everything AGAIN and letting it sit on galaxy screen it finally booted up. 1st thing I did was made a backup now I guess I'm gonna do A BUNCH MORE READING them I'll get this thing rooted and try some other rooms. Seems there's the A08 I'm on then NK2, N12 and other versions and seems only certain roms use certain kernels and firmware. So I need to get the right configuration for each b4 even trying to install them or they don't boot up.
A lot more to this galaxy s5 unlike my Nexus in the past. B4 just load the rom and go. With this s5 a lot more things to do and know about. All part of the game I guess
