software update - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently rooted and put a ROM on my phone. Like a few days ago.
Just the other day, it looks at though Verizon has rolled out an update. How can I get rid of the notification on my phone without installing it?
Also, will I have to put a new ROM on it now that there is an update?

I assume you're running Muniz's OA8 rom, so you could either update to the OC4 rom that is rooted or delete or freeze, I suggest freeze, using Titanium Backup. I'm not sure what it's called but check for something started with either software update or Verizon with software update somewhere in the title.

If you're on a stock rooted rom, you can take the update and keep root. It won't update though if it's not mostly stock. From what I'm seeing, OC4 is more fluid, faster and has better battery, so it would be worth it if you're not looking toward a more customized ROM.

I'm using G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM with G900V_OA8_TetherAddOn.zip Will this take the update without any problems?

As long as you didn't make any larger changes it should work fine. You could try the OTA anyway and if it doesn't work you should still be fine.

It won't work with tether, but there's a thread by muniz about installing the update, where you can find the tether removal. Or you could just flash his stock rooted OC4 from the same thread.

Can I add tether after taking the update?

You'd have to flash back to a Kitkat kernel, install the tether ZIP via Safestrap then flash the Lollipop kernel back to the device. Should be good as gold.

UK Note from Clove Just Updated to 2.3.6

I have just received an OTA update to 2.3.6. I have been connecting my Note to my laptop using Kies for the last few days to see if it was available that way but there was no mention of an update. So I was pleased when I did an update check using Settings on my phone and discovered one was available OTA. It is good getting OTA updates just like on the Nexus One so there is no risk of installing the wrong firmware or making a mistake using Kies.
So what difference does the update make?
received my note yesterday and had OTA 2.3.6 XXKKA also 15 megs size.
also interested to know the differences
i bought from carphonewarehouse and got OTA 2.3.6 this morning too.
ps. its stock phone with no root.
So this removes root and CWM?
Edit: apparently root and apps are not touched on this update according to the other thread about this.
Just downloaded and install failed, it said to try using kies...

Have the same. It failed to update, said to try by kies. I also have rooted stock ROM.
Maybe we should unroot ?

That may be the case, so I'll probably do this later today since it's almost 3am. I don't want to set everything up tonight.
Or we can just wait for a custom ROM that will have the update.
Edit: I don't understand though why people who are rooted in the other thread got it to work.

Thanks for the thread! I've nicely updated my phone
Also got 2.3.6 OTA today. Phone is from the Polish Plus+ telco. Seems much snappier all around. Will be interesting to see if battery life improves too. Also the stylus seems more accurate but it's hard to say...
Bring on ICS!
mine fails the wifi update. tried 3 times. my phone is rooted.
fire up kies and says that kj4 is the latest
perhaps its to do with the method you used for rooting.
iirc, there are a couple of different root methods, some of them seem to affect the tamper counter (cant think of what its really called). maybe the update is only available for those who still have the counter at 0?
dont quote me on this though, im still a nubblet on the tweaking side of android.

It seems rooting has nothing to do with it. I've rooted by the CF-Root method 2.
Maybe any other changes make the problem (theme mods ?)

I rooted my note with Chainfire's tutorial using the zergrush method and installed the new KKA kernel.
My phone downloaded this new update but failed to flash it on reboot. I think I'll just wait and see if Chainfire releases his own version or there is a rom with it built in.

Can't install Samsung update

I got a message last night on my note that there is a firmware update available. I've got a GT-N7000 on AT&T and am running a rooted stock ROM with CWM. When I try to install the update it reboots the phone and then tells me "Failed to update firmware. Try again using PC software (Kies) or visit a Samsung service centre". The update is 101MB. I did a search and didn't see any other posts about this so thought I'd ask if anyone knows what the update is and how I can get it installed.
Thanks.
Its probably because your rooted. I was on a rooted rom and flashed the stock kka firmware my phone came with then updated without a problem. I did't try to update while being rooted though.

You could just flash a stock rooted rom of the update. The update is the Lc1 firmware.

Look for OTA rootkeeper on the market. Never tried it but some people that they could update OTA and keep their root
From xda-premium to Tapatalk
I have the same problem. I'm on the international Note (in UK), have rooted the phone for titanium backup and autostarts (I've deleted some bloatware and frozen others), but haven't played around with custom roms or flashing because I don't really know about that sort of stuff. Also, the firmware update here is 73.5 mb.
Tried ota app, but that doesn't really make a difference and it's only intended to keep root if an already successful ota update has unrooted the phone. Our problem is the the update isn't completing successfully.
I'm worried that the upcoming ICS update won't work either.
Any solutions would be massively appreciated, especially if they don't involve flashing or doing a factory reset.
Thanks

If you've played around with /system, you won't be able to OTA for the most part, as these updates are patches and expect to find an untouched /system partition.

I tried OTA Rootkeeper but no luck. Is there a way to back up my apps and settings such that I could easily restore them after flashing a stock ROM that includes the update?

[Q] Mandatory Restore to Stock for Upcoming 4.2 Update?

According to this IBT Blog, restoring to stock ROM is mandatory for receiving the upcoming OTA update to 4.2.
Does any one know if this is true, as the last OTA update to 4.1.2 automatically launched and completed just fine on my N7 in its rooted state?

I think you're confusing running the stock rom and being rooted. One can be rooted while still running the stock rom. If this is the case, you should have no problem receiving the OTA update. On the other hand, if you loaded a custom rom (e.g., CyanogenMOD), you won't get the OTA update.

Am I still able to get the OTA update, if I'm on Stock rooted, but modify the system to have tablet UI?
If not, what will be my option, to update the tablet? I guess manually pushing the Rom might work, but a reassuring would be good

I haven't messed around with modifying the UI, but I have replaced and disabled system apps in the past, and that stops the OTA from installing (it will download the OTA, but the install will fail). I suspect it's possible that the same thing will happen with a modified UI, but I'm not 100% sure. What is the process for modifying the UI? Did you replace certain files? If so, hopefully you saved the original versions and can revert back to the originals.

I do know the difference between Stock ROM vs. Stock ROM + Rooted -- but I had just read the IBT blog too fast and plus I implicitly assume that folks who use custom ROM would just wait until their particular custom ROM rolls onto 4.2 base, to realize that folks with custom ROM is the target audience of the IBT blog.

If the phone is rooted and VZW puts out an important update, what do we do?

I'm still on the stock ROM. I've heard rumors of VZW putting out updates to help with battery etc. I have the SDM file frozen so it won't auto OTA and lock the phone up. But I also don't want to miss out on solid improvements.
Suggestions?

Whole threads covering people who were rooted already downloading the most current firmware updates (two of them for Verizon landed via Kies in last couple of days) and then going back in after the updates and re-rooting their N3's. The current firmware updates keep SELinux at Permissive.

4.4.4 OTA update with root

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…
