Rooting magic?

Without opening the box how can i tell if this Rogers HTC Magic can be rooted or not?
The reason i ask is because some of the newest ones already have the new updated firmware applied to them (or so my friend has told me).
Does anyone think this is the case or not?

I think the new ones have a Magic+! Not sure though
What makes you think it's some of the newest ones? I'm pretty sure ALL of them have the updated firmware by now

im pretty sure you can't tell by the box (almost positive).... best thing to do is ask how long the store has had it in stock..
if they had it from early january or from 2009 then it will not have the newest update and can be rooted... if its after mid january then it a good bet it will have the non rootable update..

Do you mean Magic + on the box? This one says htc magic there is no +.

... as of now it cannot be rooted, that isnt to say that i never will be rooted. once the 2.1 update comes out there may be a way to root again, but only time will tell... my recommendation is to buy a used one that is already rooted, or one that someone never did the update on if you really want root now..

What makes you think there _will_ be an update to 2.1?
And if there is one, what makes you think it might be rootable?

rogers have said there will be a 2.1 update. and i dont know if it can be rooted, no one does..we have to wait and see

Did Rogers explicitly promise to update the magic? I couldn't find any source for that. As for HTC, they only mention they will have an update for the Hero - nothing about the Magic.

just google rogers magic 2.1 .. yes its comming.. that is the reason why they offered the free upgrade to magic from dream as the dream was not getting the update..

OTOH my carrier has made it known that it will not be offering any update beyond 1.5 for the magic.
But back on topic, if HTC has been able to cook an unrootable update at least once, they will keep it this way with further updates too. I'm willing to bet the future update will do nothing to help those who would rather run custom roms, as opposed to those who will be content with the official 2.1 release.

Finally! for the European suckers like me, who for example installed an RUU from another continent(my case was Asia, Chungwa RUU update) and are now stuck with it...although there is no root yet for this bootloader/spl , at least you can have the European version with the European widgets like Friendstream...

What do you mean by "friendstream is a lie" ? I haven't installed yet but I assume it has all the European Widgets... or have you install it and I'm wrong?

Unfortunately, Hero's 2.1 doesn't include Friendstream. 3D Gallery and live wallpapers are also missing.

well, about the source of it...probably some leak from Htc...I can't see it being anything else...

well, i'm not 100% sure but let us face facts...
shipped-roms.com has all the updates that are known from HTC...it has released previously other RUU that were available a lot of time after at HTC...
I've flashed this RUU to a Hero and it's perfect...
so...

It works fine... open BL on Stock 5.0.1 WWE

works great on htc m8 asian version, 4.4.4 bootloader unlocked. used SuperSu to gain root for sunshine.

so if i understood what sunshine is: we pay 25$ and this application unblocks our bootloader automatically ?

You gain S-OFF, which is different to unlocking the bootloader and is currently the only way to do so.

Will this work on an att model? I want to covet to a unlocked developer build.

If you install the app it will first check compatibility and see if it will work for you... Only after that will it prompt you to pay

Given that AT&T hasn't successfully released a single OTA, yes - it will work. It was one of the few devices that never lost S-off support. Also, I strongly suggest making the switch to the developer edition. I converted mine a few days after I got my phone (also AT&T) and I've never looked back. The only things I even halfway miss are visual voice mail (not much) and AT&T WIFI (not much)

+1 to this. I dropped visual voicemail with att a long time ago. Easily replaced with Google Voice.

I think AT&T devices that OTA or RUU'ed up to 4.4.4 broke sunshine, until this 3.0 update (even if just for a month and a half).

Wow, I hadn't realized AT&T finally managed to get an OTA out. (Probably since I'm running DE software). Figures, they finally get 4.4.4 out after the rest of the world gets Lollipop...

Yes, 4.4.4 finally rolled out end of January for AT&T. LP is in certification, one rumor is rollout end of March.

I just SUnshined my Sprint M8, HK edition. works great and i threw stock RUU over it, kept s-off too.

Hey just wondering, can anyone link me to a guide where it shows how to get S-OFF on the HTC One M8 running ViperRom? I searched through the forums and most of them are saying use Firewater

I don't think you can s-off with viper. You need to be on stock & go to http://theroot.ninja/

Yes, it was quite hilarious. Everyone else is rolling out Lollipop updates and we hear that AT&T is about to push a new update as well...so I assume Lollipop, right? Nope! Good old AT&T! Rolling out 4.4.4 when everyone else in the world is getting lolipop! What a freaking joke.

No, s-off does not in itself disable subsidy lock.
There is however a separate mod for SIM unlock that requires s-off. But if your phone has been officially updated to Lollipop it seems this exploit has been patched by HTC and no longer works. If your phone is still on older firmware, the mod may still work:

Getting a stock ROM now!!

Woke up at 5:30 AM Central time to a nice little OTA waiting for me.
When they say the OTA will start in the morning they aren't kidding.
DLing now but sadly I gotta get to work so it'll be a bit before I can toy around with it.
If you haven't gotten the update pushed to you yet you might be able to manually check via settings.

Got mine at 2:30 am Pacific time!

I didn't get a notification, but once I went to Settings/System updates/HTC software update it checked then it popped up.

Yes unfortunately when I start IC it will support S-Off users simply because it's easier to mod/flash firmware/etcc... S-on users will be on their own.

I'm no developer....but if you limit your userbase to a group of people who spent $25 to S-OFF there phone (which was basically only needed for extreme things) then not many people will use it.
Especially because NO other ROM needs S-OFF...

No you definitely misunderstood me. What I mean is IC will work for both s-on and s-off but if users aren't on latest firmware there is a chance of having bugs. Like Wi-Fi not working... So I recommend users to be s-off so they can obtain superCID and flash lollipop firmware.. as I will be releasing quite a few other things that require s-off.
And I will not baby s-on users that have bugs ....

I'm currently S-On because there was no "must have" benefits to S-Off. Yes , there are some benefits but none that I absolutely couldn't do without.
That being said, If IC or another ROM use S-Off to gain some time of feature, function, or improvement I'll shell out the 25 bucks with the quickness.

It looks like the firmware isn't up on HTC's download page yet, but I think the Sprint one is.

Mine too

Initial thoughts after just a few minutes of playing with the camera and a few other things, camera launches much faster and pictures look more detailed and consistent. Phone feels smoother and more responsive when double tapping to wake it. If people continue complaining about the M9 after this update then there is no pleasing them. This is why I keep coming back to HTC. I will not fall for the gimmicks that other brands are selling. I will report back if I find anything else of significance.

I don't have the developer edition of the M9, but I do have the Unlocked edition from HTC and I can confirm I just got the same update about 30 minutes ago.

Mine will not finish update . It keeps aborting. Can someone please be kind enough to make an ruu zip ? The exe way don't work on my PC. I have to do the sd card/0PJAIMG.zip way. Thanks

BR7fan, be patient, it takes a long time for the update to install, I almost made the mistake to stop it.

I want to turn my M9 Int.S-OFF Device to Dev.Edition ? Do I have to change my MID to 0PJA11000 or is it only enaugh to change CID ?

Anyone know why there're two different version number? One as 2.6.651.11 and another is 2.8.617.4? Since I'm DevEd phone, don't know why I got 2.6.651.11 update notification.

Yep, that's Sprint version. But my phone is DevEd, shouldn't I be supposed to get DevEd version?

The answer is here. Flash the RUU from the OP, then the one from this post. Be sure to use ADB to flash the OP RUU. The Dev Edition one can be run on a windows machine as an .exc.

After upgrading I cannot send MMS anymore. Did not have that problem when I was on Maximus 5.01. Anyone having mms sending issues?
