[Q] Success of OMEGA - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious, but what makes the Omega Rom so damn popular and successfull? Most Roms have the same features and even more + some apps on Omega cost money....
This isn't meant as a hate thread, I'm just wondering and maybe I'm missing something.

Stability, battery life, performance. This is what most users look in a rom.
I guess Omega offers all of this and more

That's true but almost all half decent roms offer this nowadays

It's marketing. Nothing more.

Hi mates,
care in what is done, great support , team work.....and what i think is the most important aspect people participates a lot in their different threads which helps make it better..
word of mouth marketing.....yes sure

Basically every TW based rom in the Android Development section has no significante change to the stock rom Samsung released. Mostly it are all roms with a few apps removed, a few apps added, maybe a different kernel and a different theme. Little coding, so not much difference between them (there are exceptions).
Usually the thread with the most shiny images gets the most people. But I think the strength of Omega is in making people that are new to flashing to chose for his rom.
The real coding takes places in the Original Android Development section where roms are coded from scratch.

Hi,
Fame is fame, it doesn't mean a product is better than another. Let's take Apple iPhone for example, its fame is beyond the level of, let's say, HTC One, however you cannot guarantee one is better than the other.
I believe you should give a try if you think it's worth your time, if not search for another ROM .
All the best,
~Lord

CyanogenMod for I9000 Donations

G'day,
For those who are hoping for INTERNATIONAL i9000 support on Cyanogenmod, a donation thread has been started, to try to get support quickly.
There was a donation thread previously, but unfortunately, it was related to the vibrant.
I'm hoping that we can pull enough people together to buy CM developers A FEW I9000's.
This i will be on... CM on my i9000 would be awesome.
Can some one enlighten me on what is all the fuss about CM ROMs?
what makes the so special that everyone crave for them
AFAIK it's just a customized ROM, no much different than using any other customized ROM
From my point of view installing some body else ROM defeats the whole purpose and fun of Customizing my own ROM
and what goes into my Own ROM others might not like.
I think the best ROM is the clean vanilla ROM, then every one can install whatever they want to it.
Thats the thing. The default SGS rom isn't vanilla. It's packed with samsung's framework. CM is vanilla (based on AOSP) with a few more additions in the code to make our life easier. And btw, you can customize CM to the same extend as the SGS preloaded ROMS.
Fun customising roms? I'm more interested in having a productive phone which works well and can be relied on (even if I'm stuck in an emergency in the Australian outback). I feel I can do that with the current stable Samsung ROM I use, but if I can get a similar level of stability, from a customised one which has other enhancements, I'd do so. Especially if the enhancements improve productivity.
By the way, I wouldn't get too excited about testing EVERY SINGLE ROM. Because in 3 years, you'll look back at all the ROM's you tested and wasted time tweaking, and you'll probably wish you spent it on useful long-term knowledge, rather than reinventing the wheel which others have already done.
I feel the advantage of CM is that they are more methodical, and the project encourages people to work together. We should also be brutally honest. Touchwiz may be an improvement over the original stock launcher, but realistically, even the free alternatives (ADWlauncher and LauncherPro) are MUCH better. CM support means lessor time is needed messing around with customisations, and more time can be spent using the phone, because we can't expect Samsung to dump their carrier additions.
@andrewluecke 100% excellent reasons to donate.

Whats up with the roms lately?

I just wanted to get a feel/consensus on peoples opinion of the third party rom scene for the EVO. I started my XDA days back with a tilt, and have been loyal to HTC since then.
The EVO is simply the best phone out there at the moment, IMO. But the roms seem to be very lacking in actual substance and it's a bit disappointing.
Almost every rom I've looked at here has been so customized and themed they are really just eyesores. It was normal on all my other devices to have some of the roms that were being produced be like this, but not all. I've been really impressed in the past with HTC roms. Dutty is one of my favorites.
The only 2 current exceptions I've found are CM and Fresh, and since some of us refuse to use sense, it really only leaves one choice.
CM is awesome, and the work that goes into it is really really amazing. There isn't a bunch of customization to the UI, it's left up to you what you want to do for how your phone looks. It's a rock solid foundation to build upon, and it would be awesome to see more roms in that form.
Thoughts? Am I missing something?
This is the wrong section, the General section would be the appropriate section for this.
this should be in general, but i agree it seems that lots of roms out there are just customizations of existing roms, a color change here and there. There really isnt anything major to differentiate between sense roms, except for 3 or 4 big ones, and then there is CM rom, and the roms based of CM seem like just themed version of CM, but who knows i mean im not a developer, maybe theres only so much one can do as far as development.

What I'm trying to say is, unless your speaking specifically about HDMI, there's really not a lot left to be desired that can't be had from these phones until Honeycomb hits.
I mean, CM even supports SIP accounts natively...among the millions of other small details that are so amazing.
Even DLNA can be had through a simple app...what's left for you to want so badly that your phone cannot do already?
My point is, is that most devs are not going start over from scratch just for the heck of it, when something so close to optimum potential has already been reached.
Sent from my 4G-Toting, Lightning Smoking, Gingerfied, Cyanogenmodded EVO: Please stand back!
Itotally disagree. I mean, some, yeah, you're right, but look at the mods done to the more popular roms. Not just theming but tweaks, custome apps, etc.
What more do you want form a ROM?
And while, true, some people are married to CM, some are more into Senseui, some Miui.
Everyone has different tastes, and from what I se eon here, there's something for just about everyone.
Thread moved to General.
As per your questions, devs make roms based on their personal taste and, in many cases, general feedback from the users. There are many plain, stock rooted roms out there, and many tutorials in case you want to make your own as well. Also, you can easily theme any rom to your liking. I hope this answers your concern.
i think the ROM's on the evo are pretty strong. My criteria is, do the majority if not all ROM's improve upon stock? Yes. Do the majority if not all the dev's support their ROM's and upgrade in a timely manner? Yes Do the majority if not all the dev's have themes/mods available for their ROMS? Yes. Are there more than one style of ROM's to choose? YES 1. Sense 2. AOSP - MIUI 3. AOSP - CM 4. AOSP - Liquid metal

so there are different levels of dev support from phone to phone.

+1... this.
I've had 4 Android phones:
Evo
G2
MyTouch 3g Slide
Moto Cliq
This forum has more roms, kernels, mods, themes, etc than all 3 of my prior phones combined. Every time I hit the dev section I'm a kid in the candy store. There's fully functioning roms that work with everything and a few that I'm excited to see get better, like MIUI getting 4g.
There's very few phones out there with this much dev support, my friend has an LG vortex. Go find the LG vortex section of the forums. They don't exist.
My point, you have to do some digging but there's something here for everyone. If there isn't, make it! We could always use another dev to try to topple the big dogs.

Why do you use a custom ROM on your SGS2?

I got my S2 yesterday and so far, am very pleased with it. Before it, I had a ZTE Blade, which was my first smart phone.
With the blade, I was still on 2.1 when 2.3 came out, my network provider put a load of garbage on the phone that really slowed it down, not to mention taking up valueable space. Bascially, there was an endless list of problems that needed addressing. As a consequence, I started trying out custom ROMs almost as soon as I got the phone.
With the S2 however, I ditched the standard launcher, put on ADW EX, switched in a number of apps instead of the Samsung defaults, but I can't say I've found any significant bugs yet that make me thing I need to go custom.
Everything just works (let's hope it stays that way!), which is a world away from where I was with my old Blade.
With that in mind, why do you use a custom ROM? I think it can be split into two areas, bug fixes, and nice additions. From my reading so far:
Bug fixes:
Shutter lag on the camera?
Nice additions:
Bettery battery life through new kernals
ICS! (ok this is a big one, if Samsung is slow with their update and there's a custom ROM that works well, that will probably be enough to tempt me)
Notification lights (I don't understand why all phones don't have this by default, I fell in love with it on my old Nokia 6300 and the blinking red light is ever present on my work Blackberry)
Deeper theming - I do miss my circular battery indicator
I'm sure you guys will help me add to the list. The thing is, what is the cost? With my Blade, I craved a phone that was fast and reliable. I seem to have that now, and if the custom ROMs introduce their own bugs or decrease stability, I don't think it will be worth it for me.
Let me know your thoughts, I'm not trying to start a flame war. This community is a lot bigger with so many more projects and ROMs going on, I'm struggling to get a handle on it all. Hopefully this will help!
I wouldn't buy Android if it wasn't for customisation through roms...that's what makes Android special!

I Jailbreaked it... but it wasnt enough..
I waited to see how the iPhone 4S would come along.. and when it did I suddenly realized something..
People who buy Apple products are often ready to feel their products are outdated the next year...
Sure enough, Apple's hardware specs are "inferior" than most of the high end android devices.. but as we know their iOS is optimized to squeeze the most juice out of it.. until it gets unsupported...
So thats one of the main reasons I bought and Android phone, and customize it to its fullest... Today my hardware works.. OK.. but in the future, with better ROMS, more optimized to the specific hardware.. my device will be more alive than ever..
So basically... Apple devices just get worse with time... Instead.. Android can only get better.

most of the mods in your list can be achieved by jkay super awesome work. You dont need an entire rom for it. I can understand a kernel affecting battery life but how does a rom do it? (apart from swapping a few apks out?)

You can do all of the tweaks that you can think of without a custom ROM. But the beauty of using a ROM instead of doing it yourself is that you get a full package of what the developers could think of and all the feedback from the users. So its a base to proceed your modding from. You also don't have to deodex the ROM yourself for easier modding.
Regarding battery life, it comes from bloatware and excessive logging that has been removed. Often ROM makers will also replace some of the stock apps with more battery efficient ones. For instance swapping apps that through a bug keeps the phone awake.

yes they could have made it more customizable like sense but thats about it. All custom rom chefs do is customize the sammy rom more. look at the features
mms removed from logs - i am sure most of us dont want it but there are some who use it. Understand samsung is creating this to please everyone.
I can give more examples. Moral of the story is lets credit the super devs here but lets not take credit away from samsung. They have done a decent job with this phone in all departments.

[Q] New to S4 (T-Mo), looking for opinions

Hey all
I'm coming from the Amaze, and before that, the Nexus One and the G1. I like the camera app on my S4, and i haven't tried S-Voice yet. Outside of these features though, i'm not sure i care for the original stock rom. I saw a poll for what everyone thought was the best Rom for the i9500, i was wondering about opinions of the i9505 variant.
Looking for really good battery life, all the features of the stock camera (if not more) and better responsiveness than the stock rom. I figure i should stick with TW based roms for now until i find apps that can replace them. My main purpose in this phone was the ability to run mirrorlink to my car's stereo, so i can't loose that either.
So then, what is everyone's favorite TouchWiz based rom? Or, if you prefer, what rom has at the very least the same features as the stock rom for the camera? Is there something that equals s-voice? Can i still mirrorlink with that rom?
thanks all!

First off there is a whole separate section for t mobile variant discussions that will give you a lot more relevant information for the t mobile device.
Second, threads about what the best ROM are generally are not welcome on xda because it is an impossible question. Only you can decide what the best ROM is for you. What makes battery life great on my ROM might severely limit your ability to use it the way you prefer. Everything depends on your taste, and how you use the phone. The only way to decide what ROM is best is to start flashing them and testing.

I'm not a newb to xda. I didn't ask for a best, i asked for opinions of favorites. I feel there is a BIG difference there. Now, i did mention that i saw a poll for what people thought was the best rom for the non-T-Mo variant, but that only inspired this thread in part.
Hopefully i can get some real responses regarding what other people find as their favorite roms based on the criteria i'm looking for, or reasons why another rom is their favorite in general. I don't really have the time to sit and flash roms all day long anymore.

Should ROM devs focus on stability or progress?

Since I don't think I can re-phrase myself in a better way, I'll just quote myself from a different topic:
CrisR82 said:
The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced that the problem is the ROM devs themselves - seems like most rush ahead and as soon as a new Android version pops out - scrap bug-fixing what they made so you can have a fully stable version and move straight to a new one, bringing all the old bugs along with a ton of new ones.
I have to be honest, after some replies and PMs I decided to use dual-boot and try some other stuff...and I'm convinced the ROMs that can be classified as "stable" are less than 5...total. All others seem to have some type of issue that can screw over a person's daily life in one way or another.
Am I the only one that feels this way?

I would really like to see what you guys think on the subject: should developers slow down [maybe skip a version] to provide a genuinely stable ROM, or leap ahead for the new version and patch it out to a "usable" degree?
Most ROM developers are pretty much unpaid volunteers.
They should do whatever they want.
If you do the ROM, you get to choose.
It all shakes out one way or another.
^^^^^
Exactly. What a presumptuous thread. Also, why do you even need a 2nd thread to pose this question given your ongoing thread about not dissimilar issues ?

I already know that...but here's the thing - noone makes a ROM him himself/herself only. Most people make a ROM and share it for others to use, so while the final decision is ALWAYS up to the individual dev, it's still good to know what the community prefers (or at least it would've mattered to me if I was a dev).
If we go with the logic that community opinion doesn't matter at all, we might aswell get rid of all topics that are not bug reporting or guides.

OK, sure.
But I don't like the statement that "the problem is the ROM devs". It's criticism, and I think criticism is better directed at parties that are doing it for commercial purposes where I/we are paying customers, such as Google or the phone OEMs, or even CM Inc and MIUI Inc.
For popular phones there are a variety of ROMs. Some are more stable (often stock based) and many are more bleeding edge.
Even Google is more bleeding edge with AOSP on Nexus devices. How many times have we heard of longstanding AOSP Nexus bugs, such as BT issues ?
People slam the phone OEMs and carriers for taking so long to provide updates. Yet those bleeding edge updates, even from Google are often very buggy.
I'm happy to have a variety of choices. Let the chips fall where they may. Unless I've contributed financially to a ROM dev, I'm not generally going to ask him/her to follow any wishes I have about stability or leading edge features. (I've made a few exceptions where a popular ROM has nasty bugs that impact the users of my commercial apps.)
I have 20 phones to do testing and development of my apps. I go into these XDA forums and look for the most popular ROMs. Sometimes I want the latest to do KitKat testing, sometimes I want the most popular, and sometimes I want something stable (often stock based, as it turns out, or based on CM10.2 for example.)
i think first they should progress a bit then make that much part stable and move son

I think people are misinterpreting my words...I'm not saying devs are terrible, bad at their work or anything like that, I'm sharing a thought on why I think most ROMs are not stable enough for everyday use and made a poll to see if others think this too, or simply put "a topic where people can show preference", I never once said "you should listen to me" or "do it how I say because it's better". While I personally don't have any use for custom ROMs in my daily life, I'm always happy to see more and more people making ROMs, stable or not.
However, I will say one thing and back it up forever - "it's not commercial" is not a valid reason not to criticize something. Any forum or work (coding, art etc.) is fully subject to criticism. So to people telling me "you cant criticize developers because they do it for free" - yes I can (not to mention it's my real life job)...it's called "having a point of view", if you agree or don't agree - that's up to you.
In short - this is a topic to see points of view on this, NOT to force anyone into changing his/her way of work. So stop treating it like one. It's how forums work - you open a topic to discus something.
P.S. yeah, now after re-reading it, I might've picked wrong words when I said "the problem are the devs"..."problem" in particular doesn't seem like an appropriate word for it...I apologize if I offended any dev with it.
Devs should continue to do whatever the hell they want to do however the hell they want to do it & ignore people like you.
Opinions & arseholes.
In my opinion, in order for rom makers to gain loyal users, they should prioritize stability while making progresses.

I'm using the Samsung stock ROM (Spain region) since my job requires me to do so, but I really like MIUI for its awesome stability and customization (though I have a feeling they'll never update the S2 to 4.2 or higher)...but I also like CyanogenMod 10.1 (the stable build) for the slight performance increase (and I would've probably kept it if it wasn't for the unfixable MHL and other Samsung closed source things that don't work).
I'm also keeping an eye on Omni and I plan to give it another try once it reaches a more stable stage since it fixes some graphics issues on the S2 GT-i9100.
