Using a G900F on stock Touchwiz 5.0 G900FDXU1BOC2.
Certain image files (all of them PNGs) seem to fail to open properly in the Gallery app. When opening them directly from within the Gallery or from the stock file explorer, the images appear pixellated when zooming in, as though they are failing to render properly, or the viewer is zooming in on a thumbnail rather than on the image itself. When opening in the Gallery from a different app (such as Root Explorer), this results in a black screen and complete failure to view the image. These images open properly in alternative image viewers such as QuickPic, and when viewed in web browsers.
Most PNGs that I tried do not experience this issue, only certain ones.
This issue does not seem to be present on my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 running stock Touchwiz KitKat.
Tried wiping cache, wiping /data, even reflashing ROM, to no avail.
Attached in a zip file are two examples of images that fail to open correctly in the Gallery.
Does anybody else experience this issue, or is there something wrong with my device specifically?
Doesn't open on my S5 on Resurrection Remix 5.3.9!
Just the background color of the gallery APP.

Thanks! Is there anyone for whom it DOES open?
The two attached images open fine in gallery for me (G900F running BOC7)
The gallery app is likely just not powerful enough to render them well, the difference is similar zooming using Office Picture manager on a PC vs the stock Windows Photo viewer, photo viewer loses quality, OPM looks still looks great
Opens great with Google+ Images.

You're using the default gallery? Opening directly from the gallery app or from an external file explorer? It doesn't appear blurry and pixellated when zooming in, does it?
I doubt it's the power of the app in question, it has handled much larger images (like, >3MB 1080p PNG wallpapers generated by Tapet, or 16M photos taken with the camera) with no problems. I wondered if there's something at fault in the image properties somehow, but I can't think what it might be. All the images it's failed to handle so far have been black and white manga pages, and they've all been PNGs, but only some black and white PNG manga pages refuse to open, not all.
Also I've noticed that opening from the built-in My Files file explorer results in the same thing as opening from the Gallery itself, an image that pixellates on zooming. rather than the black screen which Root Explorer throws out.

Just confirming what @*Detection* said, BOC7 (BTU) Stock Gallery App and also checked via Stock file manager both work fine, zooming in also works fine no pixelating
We need BOC7 again. ?

Thanks. I first noticed the issue on BOA2, I'd actually hoped that flashing to BOC2 would fix it.
Any advice on what I could do to diagnose the problem? I'd like to avoid the hassle of doing full backups and flashing a custom ROM to see if it makes a difference.

so whenever i want to view an image at full res I can't I always had this suspicion when viewing stuff on the net and zooming in it just didnt look anywhere near a nice as on my pc (or windows mobile phone)
I just sent myself an email with an image (png) high res (2xxx by xxxx) the image is a map with lots of small images and text on it, when viewed on pc you can read all text just fine but on the phone its looks terrible (at least with default image viewer and the image viewers I have downloaded)
Whats going on?
I remember reading somewhere before that the phone can only display/render upto a certain amount of pixels regardless of how large your image is.. Also I notice on the default gallery viewer when you swipe around fast the image is ultra pixelated and have to wait for about 1-2 seconds.
This is really annoying. I don't think there is a fix at least that I can find. What a shame our powerful phones can't do what older phones can. Is it an android fault you think?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
quite a shame endeed...
also when pinching into pics inside the gallery app, it won't load the full pix map
So I have been looking for a fix, b&b gallery does render the full image which is nice but not sure about browser. Do any of the browsers for android render full images or are all the same?

HTC always has to screw up something, the image bilinear filering is now disabled when viewing images fitted to screen, equally the filtering quality is reduced when zooming in, im sure they did it to increase speed
but really it makes browsing/viewing photos and pictures horrible, the gallery was one of the best things in my DHD
is there anyway to restore the foyo htc gallery? titanium isnt allowing it
[edit] more info and pics in the third post
It would allow it when u root your phone (what you haven't done... thats how it seems).
When u want to root your phone u can install Visionary from the market and root your phone for a short moment.
Then u will need a backup of your 2.2 galery or a froyo rom that included sense.
When u have the rom (.zip) the HTCAlbum.apk will be located in \system\app of the zip file.
After extracting the apk u need an explorer that will ask for root previliges (i use rootexplorer but thats a pay app) and u have to copy the .apk to \system\app after u mounted read and write acces.
After that reboot unroot and u should have a the 2.2 galery on your phone.
Hope I could help
EDIT: i should read everything and do not write when i'm drunk....
but except from the first part with rooting it is possible that may way is still working
i was unable to replace the gallery app. even through recovery it disappears
the problem is there, yesterday i made sure of it by comparing it with a froyo running DHD, the froyo gallery did not have this problem
when you have a photo or an image, that is landscape oriented and you view it in portrait, the image rendering looks all messed up, jagged edges all around even if you zoom it, very apparent if you take a picture of a text and view it against its original orientation, if you view it in landscape its good quality
likewise, if you take a portait and view it in landscape it looks bad too
it ruins the whole gallery photo browsing experience, which was the best on the DHD, HTC will always do this, break something when they are supposed to be fixing....
i've attached photos of the issue i hope it shows
its been working perfectly for me....
I dont know this is just with me or with every note...........
When viewing thumbnails in the gallery, its background image changes to the last viewed picture that too very big and blurry. While seeing individual image, background is completely black but its not the case with the thumbnail view?
Same is the case while viewing video thumbnails, it has strange colour shading(or banding whatever) at the background
Can anyone confirm why is dis and others also have it?
am I only one facing this problem ?
in my experience, with various phones, this is the norm.
The 'Gallery' app is, in a word, terribad. It's laggy even with a dual 1.4GHz processor.
Check out Quickpic, brilliant free gallery app. It's the snappiest no nonsense picture viewer out there.

thank you so much.......
Has anyone noticed that when viewing your pictures that you took with the moto x camera on your phone you can see the pixels filling in? I don't see this when viewing other pictures I have in my gallery taken with other devices.
Just noticed it only does it when using the stock "gallery" app. When I use the "pictures" app is does not happen.
I have noticed this on other phones running the stock Android gallery app as well. Pictures above a certain size load lazily.
On another note, QuickPic is the bomb. It will do this as well though.

Yes it does, I just tried it. !!
Do you mean that the photo is slightly blurry and then becomes sharper after a second or two? This is just to make the gallery faster. It loads the thumbnail as you swipe through the gallery quickly for speed, and only loads the full image (much clearer and sharper) after you've stopped on a photo for a second or two. If it loaded every photo in full size it would be very slow and you wouldn't be able to swipe as
It is perfectly normal.
I set my default application to view pictures as the google photos app. Is there a way to change this to gallery?

Settings / apps / google photo's app... there should be a "Launch by Defaults" at the bottom you can Clear defaults. Clear it, then you can select the app you want next time you open a picture.
Thank you!
Hi, I've noticed that the Gallery app is slightly different from my S6 in that it includes all pictures on my phone when i click on the Gallery button in Camera app.
Is there anyway to exclude all pictures except for the ones that the camera takes, like in my S6?
It a bit annoying that there is always a meme (from whatsapp group chats) in the bottom corner of the Camera
Same concern here, did you find any solution?
This has been an issue since Note 7 and I have not found any solution yet, except going directly to gallery/albums/camera instead.

I have used "no media" on my N7 to stop advertising pics showing up in gallery back when I had it (yep, advertising pics were showing up in gallery too), but that's really not a solution, since in my case I have tons of media files on my phone and I want them to show as media files, just not inside gallery open from camera. I have not seen advertising pics showing up in S8 gallery, but pictures that I downloaded from internet do show up.
I have the same issue! But with camera app.
I have the same problem on my S8. I don't want them to hide from gallery but at the same time they shouldn't be included in the camera.
I have the same problem, and I haven't found the fix yet. The .nomedia fixes the problem, but it isn't good as a permanent solution.

My Solution is to use Quick Pic! Been using it for years! (even b4 CM purchase. No they didn't molest it) It allows Hiding with or without password.
I give up on Gallery!
Obviously, .nomedia is not a real solution, to this day from Note4 to Note8. It would be nice, if like Open Camera allow an app to be used when clicking "Gallery" icon. I still use OC frequently, but some features are not exposed to 3rd party apps!
I can say it's embarrassing to show pictures &andaccidently swipe. Showing some of my Tumblr saves..
Use ES File Explorer to find the Cache holders and set them to hidden.
.nomedia only works until you clear the app cache and then it's deleted along with it.
If the gallery can't see the folder, it can't display it's contents.
Where are these cache holders?
