Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my own custom MP4 Files to work, and I'm not entirely sure why as of yet. I'm sure if I had a day off of work I'd be able to figure it out sooner, but with having to rebuild an entire Image file every-time I want to re-try anything, It is time consuming. I apologize for this release not being exactly what we hoped for, but I'll get there eventually.
I've found a few boots posted online do work, and I've just got to find out why. I've found these boot animations to be functional, so whoever wants to try these is welcome to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/xda-university/guide-set-video-bootanimationtesters-t2915445
STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1.)
Visit this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/xda-university/guide-set-video-bootanimationtesters-t2915445 and download the boot animation file. (Honestly I'm unsure how necessary this file is, if at all. However using this file, I did find a few boot animations successful both with and without it.
2.)
Follow Ekkoria's tutorial on modifying IMG files until the IMG file is mounted and ready to be edited.
3.)
Replace the bootanimation file within the bin folder, with the file you downloaded. (If chosen to do so, I believe it is not necessary.)
4.)
Take your copy of your bootanimation.zip file and replace the bootanimation.zip file in the Media folder. (Make sure you make a backup of the original.)
5.)
Use Ekkoria's tutorial to learn how to close and recompile the IMG file.
6.)
Flash your phone with the Mofo tool, and your new IMG file.

Keeps everything together.
I've ran into some difficulties. I believe I know what the problem is. I'm trying to get this done and juggle some personal stuff as well. I believe it's just the particular codec I am trying to use with my custom video. Basically you follow the guide that @Ekkoria posted, and replace the .mp4 files with your own file. I've already successfully replaced them, and my phone has already booted with the new animation. However now I'm trying my own files I've created, and I'm not sure why, but it keeps skipping over my own boot animation. I'm guessing it's a wrong codec.

You can't take a screenshot while the device is turning on.
I've edited the main post
I watch the video and that boot animation is sweet. The audio went well with it.
Just flashed one of them called COLORFUL HEXAGON and damn does it look pretty. Although it doesn't go full screen since the ColorfulHEXAGON has a different color backsplash

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ANIMATION!!!!! I LOVE THAT (watch_doge lol haxor)
It's on the link I posted.. Just no preview.. Ctos I believe it's called.
I'm also creating my own boot animation. Will post here when I figure it out.
It may have to do with permissions.

*EDITED*
This is very easy now after having the permanent ROOT -- thanks to PAUL for wonderful Visionary+, Evostance for brilliant guide, and those geniuses who make this happened (you know who )
First you need to get permanent root. Here is the link to the guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427
(If you read till page 10, you will definitely know how to do it and what to expect).
Second, go buy ROOT EXPLORER from the market. (Best explorer for rooted phone period).
Go to /system/customize/resource
Make sure you enable the r/w (read write option), other wise you cant do modification.
You will see both the audio and bootanimation there.
If you hated that sound (just like me), just delete the audio.mp3. If you want to change the bootanimation, just copy your bootnimation.zip to overwrite the default one.
That's all....reboot the phone....and you will have your peace...and enjoy the new bootanimation.
kuailan said:
I am just wondering is the good old way of adb pushing the bootanimation.zip work for HD? I do noticed the stock animation are located in /customize/resource folder in the system ROM. Has anyone try changing the bootanimation? Just hated those sound in bootup (prefer no sound).

firstly i'd like to state, this is development and not Q & A not being mean just stating.
secondly if you had read the ref guide which is pinned to the top you might have got your answer.
finally your answer...
NO
you can not write on the nand with the temp root. no can you adb push.
permanent root is on its way and i believe the nand will be unlocked on that so you may have write permissions. once this has been obtained then you can push a custom boot animation if required.

First of all thank you for the answer (actually I also thought so, and your answer just confirmed that)
And as for posting in develeopment, I DO believe that changing bootanimation is part of Android development (anything that involved creating/modifying and changing of the default system files). Just like recovery or flashing tools, people also develop bootanimation changer application to make life easier for others.
Also I did some search, and this is the first post for any bootanimation for Desire HD. I hope once "root" has been accomplished. People can just use this thread to put the guide to changing those animation.
Therefore I do read and follow the guidelines.

well glad you're a happy bunny
but several things,it isn't development as you were asking a question at time of writing.
secondly themes section deals with bootanimation and things like that. sound can be disabled by just renaming the file i.e. add a .bak after mp3 just for back up purpose or you can delete the file entirely up to the user.
with customs roms, they may be in a different location. i do believe that AOSP builds are located in media where as in sense builds /customize/resource
it can change depending on the developers choice really. thats why when a person releases a theme, it states what rom the user must be using to avoid problems.
anyways there's no need to carry on with that as you have got what you wanted, full root so you can do w.e. you like know
my personal favourite boot animation was the original hero one, but since that doesnt work anymore/havent found 1 that has been converted to work with the new roms, i like "making fro-yo" it just draws a pic of a frozen yoghert and colours it in.
I purchased Bootanimation changer by Andres Schomis a while back when I was still using the original Desire. There are quite a few nice and interesting ones there. My fav so far is the pissing droid (to piss off some of my iphone mate ) and the alienware. I am sure they are also available in this forum (just do a search). There is no option for desire HD yet, but seem like the one that work for Desire also work just fine in HD. To make the app work, you will need to set the custom path. I highly recommend that app for bootanimation.
Somehow I feel this thread should be in the Themes/Apps subforum instead Since it basically has to do with customization. Anyway, thanks a lot for the instructions.

Here is my anamtion

I cant figure out whats wrong with it....
I even saved it as store with winrar even tried copying the files inside the HTC stock zip and still same problem
can someone help me please?
Bump any one can help?
Just delete the bootanimation.zip inside the /system/customize/resource
Then just copy your animation to the same path /system/customize/resource.
Make sure your animation is also named bootanimation.zip
For some reason I'm not able to enable the r/w function in the resource folder. The only place I can do it is in the root directory (with system, sdcard etc). Any idea of why this is happening? (my phone is perma-rooted and I have granted Super user permissions).

Does anyone know what would happen if you removed the boot animation entirely? Will the phone still boot ok?
I'm happy not to have one at all if it speeds things up
Guys
first I didn't find the bootanimation in system ressource i found it in data/local/
along with the android-audio.mp3
second I tried to change these file it worked but the animation doesn't show up and I have just a small android when I boot up
What can I do ?
PS : my file may be too big 27 megabite for the bootanimation.zip
I tried already, but why whenever I reboot, the bootanimation.zip would revert to the original one?
For those of you who are fed up with AT&T original boot animation
and want to bring a little touch of originality to your phones;
I will give you the tools to do so and then i would like this topic
to be the display of all the talent behind your idea's. Dont be affraid
to post your creations here
So lets get started.
In order to change the bootanimation on android phone you need first to be ROOTED.
that will help you in the futur with you phone anyway... but will also give you access
to root files on your phone.
Now!!!
The file that has the bootanimation data is:
system/media/bootanimation.zip
and it is formed of 4 or less items inside.
folder : part0
folder : part1
folder : part2
.txt : desc.txt
the mechanism behind these files is simple.
the 3 folders have inside of them PNG image sequences that creates the animation.
and the .TXT "desc.txt" is the script that puts it all together.
* You will notice that inside the :
system/media directory there is an audio folder as well.
This is where the sound associated to the bootanimation is stored
originally called :
boot_att.ogg or anything else the carrier wants to call it... (we'll talk about it later)
OK. If you were Able to follow sofar you must have an idea of what is next.
the idea is to replace that bootanimation.zip file and that boot_att.ogg sound to
change the bootanimation to your own.
I highly recommand to backup these existing files just in case you want to put the
phone back to it's original state...
This is where it is getting fun!
"HOW TO CREATE ANOTHER bootanimation.zip?"
sofar the best result would be obtained by creating a flash animation
of your own using adobe flash software. The screen size to select when
creating file should be in pixel the size of your android phone listed on the specs . final file will be then
published as .SWF
Once you have your SWF file you need to convert it to a PNG animation.
(what is a PNG animation?) well it is a sequence of PNG images that are put one after the other to create an animation just like the one on part0 folder of bootanimation.zip
There is a cool software that makes that convertion. It
breaks your SWF animation to a frame by frame PNG sequence.
ADShareit SWF to Video Converter Pro v5.3.zip (attached below)
....shhhhhh!!! yes i gave you a cracked one.
so when you add your SWF movie onto ADShareit you go to settings:
-Export type: Image sequence
- Sequence : Normal sequence (interact)
... the rest will pretty much adjust to the original swf file specs.
since the convertion of your swf to PNG animated is going to create a lot of PNG images
you want to create a folder on your desktop called "part0"
and on ADShareit settings you would select that folder as Export point.
Hit OK!
and let the convertion take place.
You should have now on your destop a folder name "part0" that has your SWF movie broken into several PNG
images.
At that point you have created the main animation for your bootanimation.zip file
But since the animation should play just once and then wait for the phone to boot up, you dont want it to loop.
That is why you have to create another folder "part1" that will have inside the last image of your "part0" sequence.
and that one will loop till phone boot up.( being just one image it will feel as if movie stopped.)
so i repeat:
create another folder called "part1" on witch you copy/paste the last PNG on folder "part0" you just created.
so now you have two folders:
"part0" main animation.
"part1" animation ending loop.
That's it for the animation part!
NOW THE DESC.TXT .
is just a basic txt doc on witch you type what will become the "action script"
of your bootanimation.
here is what you type: "this was when i was creating it for a motorola bravo"
480 854 30
p 1 3 part0
s loading.mp3
p 0 0 part1
now let me explain what it stands for
-first line: is the size of your animation : 480 by 854 (motorola bravo screen resolution)
then "30" stands for the speed of your animation .(30 frames per seconds/fps)
- second line part 1 of 3 (meaning first part to play) is "part0"
- third line is the sound that will play with the animation
* i said i'd talk about this later.
so here it is:
The sound format does not have to be in .ogg only it can be .mp3 or any other format your phone
recognize. the name of it also can be anything as long you use the same name for the sound file
you want to add.
(note that in front of sound line you have a "s" , and not a "p" it stands for "sound".
- fourth and last line is always the loop image file (that will be the last thing played and it will loop)
p 0 0 part1 (part1 is to be played as last.)
save .txt created as desc.txt
We have all the files now created . we need to zip:
- part0
- part1
- desc.txt
But this is not zipped just in any manner ...
you need to use 7Z compression software from there:
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
and zip by adding to archive and setting compression to :
-achive format : ZIP
- Compression level : store
or else it will not work if compressed any other way !!!
save compressed file as bootanimation.zip
here you go.
You have now:
- bootanimation.zip
- loading.mp3
copy both to your phone SD card. and push bootanimation.zip to :
system/media
and loading.mp3 to:
system/media/audio.
reboot phone and enjoy!
I.E: I am adding my bootanimation below along with sound that goes with it.
It was too big to attach on XDADev.
so i give you mediafire download links.
bootanimation.zip
loading.mp3
Ahhhh. Thank you for this. Going to give it a go when I get off work.

Still kinda new to this, but:
I was able to push the animation, but the sound isnt working. Phone is not on silent when it reboots either. I'm using bandroidx's RC2 rom with Froyo, and when I tried to push into system/media, the command prompt told me it was a read-only file system. So I tried pushing into data/local and the animation was working, just without the sound. Any help would be appreciated, as I would like to make my own custom animations with sound.

There's a way to mount /system as rw in adb, but I don't know it. Do you have cwm? You can easily mount /system in cwm recovery and then push the file there I think.
I have bandroidx's bootstrapper CWM from when I flashed the ROM, and found the mount /system option, do I simply just mount it and push to the aforementioned directory with adb while in CWM? As I said, I'm still rather new to android filesystems and I don't want to do anything to brick my phone. Thanks for the patience and any help you can provide.

Yea, make sure the USB cable is plugged in when cwm recovery turns on, mount /system in the cwm menu, then push the files to where the tutorial tells you.
And if you do somehow brick, there's always an sbf.

Maybe, the boot animation for that might be in /data/local/ so either delete that file and put your boot animation in /system/media/ or just overwrite the file in /data/local

This is where the sound associated to the bootanimation is stored

boot_att.ogg
After days of unsuccessful searching of the forums and also Google and multiple flashes between stock Rom and Th3ory's I have figured out how to add sound to his boot animation or your own custom boot animation in his rom.
NANDROID BACKUP FIRST!! YOU WILL BE EDITING A SYSTEM FILE USED DURING BOOT
1. copy default.xml from /system/customize/CID to /sdcard using Root Explorer or another app.
2. open VZW_bootanimation.zip to see what the name of the folder with your boot png's in it is named. Write that down. If using the boot animation that comes with GINGERTH3ORY the folder will be "part0"
3. open default.xml from your sdcard using a web editor. I use Android Web Editor Lite.
4. on line 120 will be the info for where the phone looks for the boot animation and boot audio. notice that boot animation is VZW_bootanimation.zip and audio is Verizon_Thunderbolt_3sec.mp3
5. on line 120 change audiostart="VZW" to audiostart="part0" or whatever the name of the folder is with your boot animation png's in it
6. save the xml and exit your editor
7. change the name of the original default.xml to default.xml.old
8. using Root Explorer paste the edited default.xml from /sdcard into /system/customize/CID
9. now paste whatever mp3 you want to play at boot into the /system/customize/resource folder and rename it to Verizon_Thunderbolt_3sec.mp3
10. reboot and finally enjoy the audio
If using a custom boot animation simply rename it to VZW_bootanimation.zip and paste it into the /system/customize/resource folder.
Hope this helps those that were having issues!
Kudos man. I can't test tonight, but will test it in the morning.
EDIT: Worked perfectly on Th3ory's v4.5.1 Great work!

Currently making a backup and then I'm going to try this... hope this works for me. Haha.

I don't have the stock animation any more. I inverted the colors on th3ory's stock animation and added the first dozen or so png's (the one's that fade in to "Th3ory" and then fade out, not the eye ones) to the beginning of the white boot ani from here:

Hi stoudtlr, I'm trying to do a custom boot animation. I zipped the files and named it VZW_bootanimation.zip but all I get is an empty screen after the white htc screen. Any ideas?

When you zip the files make sure that compression is set to "store". That's the first thing that comes to mind if you are sure you don't have a typo in the name and you have them in the right location.

Hi guys I extracted the CyanogenMod boot animation from the ROM itself, and my oh my it looks wonderful! I attached it below. To install, simply after downloading it and placing it in a comfortable location, copy it, go to system>media, and paste it there It should overwrite your current boot animation and replace it but if it does not, simply just paste the CM9 boot animation there and delete the old one I tested it only on my Samsung Galaxy S2. Works perfect. Enjoy! And remember this is made by the CM9 team not me, so give them the credit. I'm only sharing their awesome boot animation to the community and not stealing their work
Edit: OH YES I recommend that you guys use Root Explorer to copy and paste the boot animation! Cause that what I used But if you have any other alternatives that you think might be better or you are more comfortable with, please share it or use it at your own risk
you might wanna see what ive done see in my signiture at the buttom click > bootanimation< ull gonna like it 100% sure

Hi!
I changed the boot animation of my Galaxy S i9000 using the app "Boot Animations * root" from the Play Store.
I took a very cool one but its getting really nasty after a while and I want to rechange it to the default animation but don't know how . Already tried what you wrote: place the .zip in the media folder and I deinstalled the app because I didn't know where to find the boot animations. Then I restardet my phone but it still didn't change the boot animation.
sry for using the word 'boot animation' that often
Hope you can help me

Try looking in /data/local
If there's a bootanimation.zip in there it'll override the one in /system/media (which is kinda useful for keeping animations across upgrades when no data wipe is involved.)

Here are the steps I followed to change the wallpaper on my Kindle. Credit for this goes to Josepho1997 for the guide for the original Kindle Fire: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765044&highlight=wallpaper
Disclaimer:
The risk of a bricked device or bootloop exists. To my knowlege there is no way to create a back up yet which makes recovery even harder. I am not liable for any damaged devices. Proceed at your own risk.
Things You'll Need:
Rooted Kindle
File Browser like ES File Explorer
7-Zip
Changing the Wallpaper:
1. Using ES File Explorer go to: /system/framework and copy (do not move!) framework-res.apk to your SD card.
2. Plug your Kindle into the computer and move the framework-res.apk (from SD card) to your computer and make a back up copy.
3. Use 7-Zip to open the one you intend to modify
4. Browse to \res\raw
5. Find the wallpapers named hi_xxx_p.jpg and hi_xxx_l.jpg. (These are the 1280x800 images, p are portrait images and l are landscape images. I am unsure what purpose the other images of different resolutions serve at this time).
6. Replace the .jpgs with the images you want, keeping the names exactly as they are. DO NOT delete any images. (I recommend replacing each image with the same resolution image for the best results).
7. Close 7-Zip and the new framework-res.apk will be saved, move this back to your SD card.
8. Open ES File Explorer. In the settings make sure you select "Up To Root", "Root Explorer" and "Mount File System".
9. Copy the framework-res.apk to /system.
10. Change the permissions to rw-r-r using ES File Explorer (this is critical, failure will cause a bootloop)
11. Move framework-res.apk to /system/framework. Let it replace the other file.
12. Reboot.
13. You will see your new wallpaper(s) when your Kindle reboots. To tidy up, go back into ES File Explorer and uncheck "Mount File System".
These are the steps I followed successfully but I caution anyone as it is risky. Follow them carefully and if you are uncomfortable or cannot afford to brick your device please wait until someone has developed a safer, easier method.
You can delete all of images (it'd result in a black no-background), and you can also add new images. Differently prefixed images (which you may also notice are of diff resolution) are for other devices.

If you add new images, you need to renamed them correctly. I think in the id.xml(maybe string.xml), they have the wallpaper's name. If you put in a different name, it wont work. And you could edit the id.xml(maybe string.xml, I forget) so that the name of the wallpapers match yours, but then you would have to properly uncompile it and then recompile it.

Although I should have been warned by the red text above I finally resulted in a bootloop when changing those permissions. I don´t know what exactly went wrong, but it did.
As this may have happened to someone else (apparently it did, as the warning shows): Is there a way out? The only thing to do is to change back the framework-res.apk file from a backup on desktop or even to flash the whole KFHD from an update file (which does contain this file also). Unfortunately the device is unknown to cmd, although adb seems to be properly configured...
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately this tool doesn´t work for me - "waiting for device" is the only result.
ADB is on, but I´m not sure about fastboot with the original USB cable - although QemuRoot worked fine with that. How do I surely know that fastboot is on? While trying to start fastboot via cmd, it prompted some syntax info, nothing else happens - that´s it (?)

The possible reason is your using the cable that came with the kindle and for you to flash the system.img file you will need the factory cable which is differnt from the one that came with your KFHD
Hope this helps

That´s, what I suspect, too. I ordered one already.
On the other side there must be a way with the OEM cable, as in my opinion rooting means access to the affected files as well. Qemuroot works well
With "nolock" and go locker its much easier to change the lock screen wall paper or not?

Ok I did all of this but i am still getting the regular images, which doesnt make sence because if i open up the framework in system/framework folder all the images i replaced are there none of the originals. Did I do something wrong? I gave rw-r-r access I have Kindle Fire HD 7
Go Launcher EX and HD
Just out of interest, isn't installing Go Launcher and Go Locker a safer approach?
Both these applications do not require any movement to /system/apps
I guess if you like the Amazon Launcher, this is not a solution? I just try to keep
people away from any steps that may involve Bricking the device. These are
only thoughts. By the way, great tutorial, very informative and detailed.
jst07, Never mind, your solution eliminates the annoying double lock
screen. Great work jst07!

Slimepuppy,
This post needs to be updated. This was written when the software version was 7.1.x, at that time
this worked great and he had a great idea - he still does. Unfortunately, it looks like the jst07 has
been too busy to keep up the post. It happens to the best of us! I would recommend to NOT make
these changes until one of us is able to post an updated version of this modification. In Software
version 7.2.1 and higher, which is a modified version of Ice Cream Sandwich, the names in the
folder \res\raw have changed to k2_xxx_p.jpg and k2_xxx_l.jpg - not hi_xxx_p.jpg and hi_xxx_l.jpg.
Having said this, you will not see any changes when you attempt to modify images that the Kindle
no longer uses. Our new Kindle Fire Toolkit will automate this dangerous modification. So be
warned DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS MODIFICATION IT IS NO LONGER VALID IN SOFTWARE 7.2.X

Jessica,
Thank you Jessica, if it was that easy I would have said just that but it looks like Amazon has make changes to
the cabinet. I spent about 40 minutes to put it all together and I just did not have time to test it all. I saw one
person Brick there Kindle and another frustrated since it "was not working". I have been a Software developer
for over 25 years (Linux Unix AS400 & Windows) and a phone app developer since the first smart phone was
released. I am just VERY conservative when I make recommendations - I always test, test, and test. When I
know it works and safe, then I post the results. I have not had time tonight and did not want to see anyone
waste there time, so I posted the warning. Tomorrow when I am at the office, I will post the modification
after I have thoroughly tested the solution.

Exactly. There is a set of images in the location specified for this method (framework-res.apk/res/raw) and they have the k2_xxx_l.jpg or K2_xxx_p.jpg name. I created a replacement pair of images, renamed them, and pushed them into the apk with 7zip on a PC.
The replacement images are in the framework-res.apk but after two reboots the Fire HD is still displaying the old image. (I only replaced one image in both portrait and landscape mode. One can quickly cycle through the lockscreen images by closing/opening the cover. I wonder if it's the magnetic catch or the light sensor that's triggering that?)
Maybe there's another set of images. This is just enough like Linux to be trouble - time to buy another book!

Well, that doesn't make any sense. I have done this with my 1st gen kindle(I made the original guide). The way it works(simplified) is it rotates throughout all of these pictures. If you replace the pictures, it shouldn't show them, as they're not there.

Slimepuppy,
No worries Slimepuppy, I just did not want to see anyone damage there Kindle, so I felt - I had better post a quick
warning before another person waists 1 to 2 hours and finds there hard work has gone down the drain. We actuality
have an option to change the Wallpaper in our next software release:

The solution is in our software manifest and will be added in version 4.2.4 - the feature will be allow you to make
a change on the fly, so to speak. Either way, I will post the changes tomorrow for the people who like to edit apk's

Yes ma'am - had me scratching my head a bit as well. It was interesting that when I copied the updated framework-res.apk into the file system the the Kindle froze and then rebooted - didn't expect that.
Hmmm...seems there are a couple of different sets of images after all. The set in /res/raw are 1024x600 JPGs at 96 dpi. There's another set of images in /res/raw-hdpi and in /res/raw-land-hdpi. These little puppies are 1280x800 at 96 dpi. The high-res images use the name format xi_arhm.jpg (in both the portrait and landscape directories).
In the Fire HD 8.9, there's only four images in /res/raw and the lockscreen images are in /res/raw/raw-xlarge-land-hdpi/ and /res/raw/raw-xlarge-hdpi/ Filenames are the same in both - xi_arhm.jpg and the rest in xi_xxxx.jpg format. These images are 1920x1200 still at 96 dpi.
Tomorrow I'll change a couple and see what happens - it's been too many hours between now and coffee, and I try not to delete anything after midnight.
Andy
edit...
Ok, since I really didn't have to technically 'delete' anything... Placing the new pictures in the /res/raw-hdpi folders worked perfectly on the 7".
The odd sorta-lockup happened this time as well. Here's the rundown: the Fire's running 7.2.3 and is rooted, Google-app'd, and the OTA updates are defeated. ES File Explorer in root mode. Followed the direction precisely. On the last move - when framework-res.apk is put into the /system/framework/ directory, ES FileEx freezes. I can still highlight the back and home buttons - the machine's responding to the touch screen but there's no response beyond that. Tapping the power button results in an immediate boot screen - exactly as if the machine had powered down but forgot to tell the screen what happened. Once the machine's up, the new lockscreen wallpaper is visible. Any chance that the Fire's processing the framework-res.apk automatically?
Life is good!
