I have a previous thread about this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2945229 no answer and its dead so new thread!
T-Mobile tracks your tether. Not a big deal except we all know how to get around that and get unlimited(or whatever data package you have) tethering! You can edit your SQL data and set tethering_dun_required to 0. This requires root though, which we don't have.
Well there is a different way to set that. From this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/lollipop-tethering-t3058923
Start an adb shell:
Code:
adb shell
In the adb shell, run this command:
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Access Point Settings:
APN settings need to be correct. You will need to create a new APN.
Code:
Name: T-Mobile Tether
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC: [url]http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc[/url]
APN Type: default,supl,MMS
APN Protocol: IPV4
AZPN roaming protocol: IPV4
Make sure it is enabled under APN enable/disable.
Save it, select it.
I usually go into airplane mode for a minute to let things settle.
Used about 700mb. It reflects on my data usage but not tether.
This probably won't stick over reboots.

doesn't that also required to force IPV4? It was like that on 4.4. Wouldn't work if you had IPV6 on.
Yes, good point.
I created a second access point and have APN protocol set to ipv4. APN roaming is also ipv4.
Works fine. All images load, dns works correctly. Speed tests checkout fine.
This is fantastic! Possibly stupid question, how do I check how much of my tethering data I have used? I just want to make sure that this works. Thanks!

Just a small thing I noticed, MMC should be MMSC.
I am supposed to have 3gb of tethering. Just went over 3gb with no throttling so far.
@Chadneu
Hey, would it work on other T-Mobile phones, too? Or is it limited to Z3 only?

Tethering dun works on every T-Mobile android device I've tried it on. Nexus 4, 6, and 2 xperias.

MMC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
It should be MMSC. Just a minor thing. Initially I kept looking for MMC but there wasn't anything in the APN settings that matched that exactly. I figured you meant MMSC and it worked out. Also, I didn't mean to say throttle. What I meant was that I went over my 3GB limit on mobile tethering but it was not cut off.

thats odd.. I made sure to have all the settings correct, changed the APN (made sure it was IPV4) and put into airplane mode. Do i have to enter the tether_dun_required in adb after or before changing the APN settings and going to airplane mode?
I'm still getting the T-Mobile upsell website now that i've reached my 3gb tether limit...
I did the adb first then I set up the new APN. I didn't even bother going into airplane mode. I turned it on, connected an ipad and starting streaming netflix. I just let it go until the phone's own data meter read that my tethering app had used up over 3 gbs of data. I didn't get any interruption in service.

I dont believe this will work if you have already hit your limit, I am not sure though. The limit in question would be TETHER limit, not mobile data. This will still count as Mobile Data.
Setup your APN. Select it so your phone is now using that APN. Run the adb tethering command. Airplane may not be necessary, I dont think it really is.

So the situation is this. I have the unlimited data $70 plan with 3 gb of tethering (It's not longer available, they raised it to $80 with 5 gb tether. I was grandfathered into it)
I set up the new APN with all the settings that you listed. I also started this process at about 600mb of tethering used. I kept trying to redo the settings but every time I tried the settings you showed, I kept seeing my tethering meter going up. Now this was before I hit lollipop. When my data caps reset in 2 weeks, I'll see if it works this time...
Thanks for your help
This works like a charm. Thanks to OP and TU.
I am tethering from my tmo Z3 to ipad and tether data is not going up.

Now that there is root, how would i change the SQL? Do you have a write up for that? And will this work for both tethered and wifi hotspot?

If you only need tether, then you don't need root. I ran the script and no tether usage reported. My phone is unrooted.

I found this website that explains the SQL way: https://pmf.silvrback.com/fixing-tethering-on-android-kitkat
However, I also found that if you open a terminal emulator on the phone and type 'su' to give the prompt root, then run the shell command, it sticks through reboots.

Hi guys. Hope someone has an idea. My s4 was unlocked by sprint for my trip to england. Swapped the sim card for an o2 card. Talk and text work. I cannot get data to work. Tried turning it on and off. Rebooted the phone. Enabled mo ile data over mobile network. Enabled data under roaming settings for gsm data. Still nothing. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

If you can get wifi, download tweakker app. It will setup the APNs for you. Let us know if you get the data working.
I tried getting tweakker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tweakker), but it says "This app is incompatible with all of your devices." I have a 3G Nexus 7 as well, so I'm surprised it's not compatible with that nor my Sprint Galaxy S4. Is there a way to get it to install? Am I looking at the wrong app? Or is there another way to change the APN settings on the S4?

Yeah, it won't let me install it either. Weird. Worked on other phones before.
Try the different options under Connections->More Networks->Roaming. Maybe the APN options are buried there somewhere. Also, see if you have "data" checked under "GSM Network" in the roaming section, that might help.
Also, in the screen that shows you the network that you are on or allows you to select a network, make sure the green button is on the host network the SIM is associated with, then press the menu button, it might give you options for the APN.
Dial ##DATA# enter your MSL hit other then LTE APN settings then add your APN.

if you can hook up to wifi dl nova or apex (its just temporaory unless you want to keep it) hold on your home screen till you get the option to add shortcut>activities>settings>APNs this will give you access to add or remove apns at will without having to mess with your msl and sprint tech support.

I have root, and it's still greyed out. It doesn't prompt for root access either. That said, I don't have a GSM SIM in right now, so maybe when I put in a third party SIM it'll be available?
I'm guessing though it requires the MSL to add though, but there's no prompt to put it in either.
EDIT: Actually, I found the exact same APN menu under ##DATA# under Other, LTE APN. However, pressing menu doesn't even have the option to add an APN, and I put my MSL in to edit. I'm hoping it just won't let me add it because I still have the Sprint LTE SIM in.

Update: This is a known issue on the Galaxy S4, primarily from Sprint. They have completely disabled all APN changing and editing I order to disallow data usage on any other network than their local and global roaming networks.
The only known way to fix this is to root your device which will void the warranty, stop OTA updates and software upgrades, and possibly brick your phone.
Or, you could just travel overseas and pay $500-800/ month for Sprints roaming.
And then there's the option of using your Galaxy S4 like a flop phone and just using it for SMS and phone calls.
Because even though Sprint says it's an international smartphone, it's not.. If you like to use data services that is.
Waiting for an update to fix Sprints proprietary obsessions...
Good Evening All, (In the East Coast anyway)
I have done a lot of searching in XDA and Google and I can't seem to find too much detail aside from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935144
My question is specifically for the Verizon Retail Samsung Galaxy S5. Since we are rooted, is it possible to navigate to where the APN settings are stored so changes can be made to them despite the fact that the OS locks us out of it? I read that if you use a non Verizon SIM card, the APN settings can be altered as needed.
Does anybody know what in the OS prevents us from changing the APN settings or know if there is some kind of way to force the OS to allow us to change the APN settings? My main goal was to edit the "APN Protocol" settings to force it to use IPv4 instead of allowing the network to use either or. Applications such as Opera Max, due to the Kitkat VPN bug, won't work unless the mobile data connection is an IPv4 address.
Edit: May found found my answer / solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...ates when the APN settings may be configured?
also need help with this issue i have tried everything
My fix for APN Settings SM-G900V [Verizon Galaxy S5]
Okay guys,
I figured I should post this since I can't find anything thing else online solving this issue.
It took me a couple hours of digging around and teaching myself some basic android stuff but I got APN edit access on my Verizon Galaxy S5 G900V APN settings. First, I wanted access because I switched to straight talk and found I wasn't receiving MMS's. But... Verizon locks access to APN's. I won't tell you the story of how I figured it out, I will just tell you what I did and let you make the decision to do it yourself or not AT YOUR OWN RISK.
1) Your phone must be rooted... look around online and choose your own method- it just needs to be rooted. (can't post a link, sorry)
2) install: Build Prop Editor and APN Settings apps from the App store
-----Build Prop Editor allows you to change system values
-----APN Settings is a menu shortcut that you'll need
3) From another forum, I got this information:
** This forum is written for a different phone (Note3) and so are the codes... but they should work long enough to create an APN...
a)Once [build prop editor] is installed find and open Build Prop Editor
b)Hit the menu button and select Edit
c)Scroll to the bottom of screen and add the following lines
#Code:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
d)Hit the save button at the top right hand corner of the screen (looks like a floppy disk)
e)Once this is done saving restart the phone
----This part is where it gets weird. Adding the codes in build.prop creates menu issues so you can't navigate to the APN menu
4) open the app that you downloaded in step 2 (APN Settings), that will bypass the menu.
5) determine the APN you need to create and create it (depends on your provider, do some research) (again, can't post url links)
6) go back to build.prop.editor and delete the lines that you added in step 3 and reboot the phone
7) navigate to your APN settings via the menu, the APN you created will not be visible but it will still be there. Select the Verizon APN so you can connect your phone to 3G or 4G data.
8) Try MMS or group texts
That should be it... If you don't get MMS's go through the process again and try another APN (you may have the wrong one) or you can delete all but the factory APN's to return your phone to the way it used to be.
This worked for me and I hope it works for you too.
P.S. sorry this is a bit late in all the forums
Hello. I was able to make all the changes listed above. I am running into a problem when I change the mnc to my provider straight talk. Basically whatever apn I was attempting to modify is deleted, and I run I to the same problem when creating new apns. I can enter a name and change the apn but that's it. If I make any other changes the apn is no longer in my list.
Thanks,

Hey. So I am not too sure why you don't have permissions to edit apn settings. These are the apn settings Iaccessed and used to get it working on mine... then it is hidden when deleting the build prop codes.
Name
APN
MMSC
MMS Proxy
MMS Port
APN Type
If you don't have access to create a new APN and change those settings following my method, I don't know what to say... Is your phone model a SM-G900V running android 4.4.4? - that's what mine is.
The only other thing I could think is maybe the kernel version when you rooted your phone. I have 3.4.0 and used towelroot and oden to flash it.
Also, I am using Textra as my messaging application and manually configure the APN in those settings to the same one I created.
Hate bumping old threads, but I feel it's relevant in this case. I used the above method to successfully edit the APN and regain internet access and get MMS. However, if I go to Settings>More Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, there are none listed at all. I am not getting 4G signal on my SM-G900V running android 4.4.2.
Is there a way to get the actual vzwinternet apn to appear in that menu?

I have the same problem as you with an LG G4 from Verizon on straighttalk. I had ST fix their end to get my data working. They have the Verizon APN settings saved on their server for your phone but their settings have to match your settings. Since you cannot add/edit your APN they have to delete their settings and let it pull from your phone. Verizon lets them use certain APNs for their side of the network, that is why their settings are different than your phone and why they will strongly ask you to update them (even though you cannot). I found this information out because their APN settings got updated when my service renewed. I'm not sure if this will be a problem on each renew or if Verizon/ST will work that out.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 g900v. I am currently using Straight Talk BYOP program. I am having some issues with service and having 3g instead of 4g. It is a 4g capable phone. I am trying to get into the APN settings to change it up to Straight Talks Information, but it is Locked (greyed) out. Is their any way to access this? I am currently rooted and running a custom deodexed rom

I think if you search you can find info on XDA about enabling all radios for your phone. if its rooted you can try an apk like signal booster or one of those. They have advanced settings that let you select CDMA/GSM/LTE and prioritize your connection.
If you are rooted you can use coded in the dialer to access those same settings and change your connection prefs.
If I had a link I would share.

Any updated fixes for this that don't mess with the APN menu? Running Deodexed Optimal ROM and just got my S5 activated on ST. It appears that I can receive photos, but I can't use any apps without being told I have no data/network connection unless WiFi is enabled. Calls and texts appears to work fine. Can not add new APN or edit the verizon one that's in there.

I used Ricks ROM for a base and got this working. I was able to add APNs but not take away the Verizon one. It works.

I ended up just having to call Straight Talk and they did something on their end that took effect at or around midnight that night. Problem is I had to call them again the following month because after refilling my airtime a day before cutoff I lost my data(which is weird because the new card went in to my reserve). They did something on their end that immediately took effect after a reboot of my device. I'm hoping I don't have to do this every time I refill.
Straight Talk only works for 1 month at time

I have the same problem. I have 2 Verizon Samsung S5 that I have transferred to Straight Talk. Every month for the past 4 months I lose my data signal (calls work fine) . I have to call ST tech support and spend between 15 - 45 minutes (depending on how knowledgeable the tech person is) to get it reset so it works. Each phone does this on a different day so I have to do this twice a month. :crying:
They reset the provisioning on their end. Then I power off and reboot and it works for another month. Does anyone know what I have to set the APN to to fix this problem?
When I used the method in this thread and take the lines out of the build.prop, Only Verizon Internet shows under the APN. Do I need to add a ST APN and not comment out the lines?
I know this is old, but I can't find any way to edit apn settings for my nougat phone on straight talk through verizon towers. Nothing works, even with root.
I have a galaxy j3 sm-j337vpp
Thanks,
I know this is really old, but if someone is searching for the unable to edit APN for a Verzion phone, I have a fix.
Connect the phone for ADB debugging. Then open ADB shell and use the command:
am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
It won't let you edit the current one or list, but you can add a new one now, and use it. Just reboot the phone after the new APN is in place.
Howdy fellas,
I used to have HotSpot on my "stock" phone before then I updated my phone to KitKat and I had totally forgot about the HotSpot setting.
So I need your help. I rather not root my phone but if thats the only choice I have to get HotSpot unlimited data then that's fine.
So this is what I have
Under Access Point Names
-APN -> fast.t-mobile.com
MCC -. 310
MNC - 260
APN type - default,mms,supl,hipri,fota,dun
APN protocol -> IPv4
and I'm using HotSpot Toggle widget
I have all these settings for it to work but it hasn't. If I have left anything out I'll provide the info needed to get this working.
Carrier is T-Mobile and its Note 3
thanks

First, please make sure your APN settings is correct by checking the connection to the Internet.
If you are not sure about APN settings, you should ask your service provider (or your mobile operator)
Once you can access to the Internet using this APN, you can easily active the hotspot.

It works but I want it to bypass T-Mobile hotspot limit without them knowing. Before when I had the settings correct it wasnt affecting the Data but now it is.

I had a hard time trying to get my tether to work through phone data instead of hotspot data but I finally was able to do it. I found information through the forum but nothing consolidating everything into one post. Some post came from the Flex group, some form Nexus 5 and other sites for info but I did the setup on my phone and it work!!
Must Have (these are the apps I used):
You need to be rooted.
SQLite Editor
Smanager
Things to do:
You will need to edit your APN
Edit your build.prop
Global settings
Editing your APN:
Go to your Settings>MORE>Cellular Networks>Access Point Names
Create a new APN that matches the Original T-Mobile GPRS
Make the changes to match like the pictures attached.
(Known changes made were adding dun to the APN type)
Editing your build.prop:
open SManager
go to System>build.prop
open the file as text and add the following to bottom of the file
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Save the file
Editing the Global:
Open SQLite Editor
Click on the Files tab
navigate to the following directory
Data>data >com. Android. Provider. Setings.db>Global
Look for the following entries. If the entry is not listed, add it to the file
package_verifier_enable =0
tether_dun_required =0
That should be it. Let me know if you have any questions.
I am on T-Mobile...I have been using Wifi Tether Router from the Play store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
It masks internet activity and makes it all look like phone data. Have been using it over a year now and have never tripped up T-Mobile's alarms (and I have gone many gigs over the limit at times...but in general I don't abuse it). I like it because once it is set up, it is literally like a light switch. It takes a few seconds to turn on or off, but it works great. All that is required is root. You do need to tweak the settings to get it working on the Nexus 6, but mine works flawlessly.
I don't doubt that there are ways to get it working for free, but to me the convenience of auto-pilot is worth $2.50. I love that app.

APN has to have all IP-related setting show as IPv4.
(Settings -> Adv Settings -> T-Mobile GPRS (fast.t-mobile.com) -> APN Type/APN Protocal/APN Romaing)
All boxes on the main screen should be be UNchecked...except for "No Firmware Reload"...that needs to be checked.
I think all other settings can remain at defaults.
The developer (Fabio, [email protected]) is actually fairly responsive. I don't think he's a native english speaker but he's obviously intelligent and knows his stuff. There were some serious issues when Lollipop first came out (at least for Nexus devices), but the app seems to be working smoothly again.

I use this as well on T-Mo works great. I do however every now and then need to clear the app's data and reset it up to get it to work but once that is done the app works great.
I did mine this way since I like using the the native tether. I tried those before and liked it but in my office, I try to not be "that guy" which using the native tether works Good thing is that there are many ways to get around the problem and I wanted to share this since I was able to find it as a single post. I'm just contributing to the community.

Is this all for the stock rom or why are there so many steps? Ive used tmobile with wifi hotspot without issues on slimlp and doing this command via ADB stops the upsell at 5gb
This command replaces the steps of using a sql editor, if you don't want to purchase one or do not have one you can use adb and a computer
adb shell content insert --uri content://settings/global --bind name:s:tether_dun_required --bind value:i:0
To verify the entry was successfully added, execute the following:
adb shell content query --uri content://settings/global --where "name='tether_dun_required' AND value=0"
If the query returns a row_id, you are good to go. Reboot phone and you should be fine.
Obviously you cannot use the IPv6 APN, tethering doesn't work. Here is my APN, I never had to do the build prop edit either as most roms include that now, at least SlimLP does.

I'm too lazy to type everything, so here's screenshots of my configuration.
volte breaks this?
Hey I've used the original post in the past successfully, but now that I've updated to 5.1 and have the advanced LTE services, it broke. It seems like if I have the advanced LTE turned off, it still works OK, but turn it on, and my tether gets metered again.
Anyone else notice this?
EDIT: Nevermind, it's not working at all now. I'll see if I can figure out why.
I just used the same setting form the OP and it seems to work for me. I am running Chrome 5.1 build. I do notice that sometimes some data goes through the hotspot route but most of the time it is going through the unlimited data route. Im not 100% sure if the data that went through the hotspot route is from my BT tether from my tablet. I will keep an eye on this since I have to recover my phone from an accidental data delete.
I'd like to report that this method no longer works for me. T-mobile seems to detect and counts my tether usage against my 3GB hotspot limit per month.
It's weird that it still works for me. I do have some traffic data on my Smartphone Mobile Hotspot but not not that much. I'g gotten 7gb of data through this method but I didt accumulate 800 MB of data through hotspot. This is with me only using my phone as a hotspot with my tablet and laptop.
So for the life of me couldn't figure out how to enable tethering on the MTS G4. I have rooted my G4 but it still didn't work regardless of what method and app I used. I know from talking to other MTS users that MTS doesn't really have a way to track the traffic, and even if they didn't pay for tethering on their plans and still tethering, it didn't cost more. So there had to be a way.
Well turns out if you go into APN profiles, there is a profile called 'MTS Internet.' That is the one MTS setup for you when you got the phone. If you go into it you notice that the mms proxy is set to 'wapgw1.mts.net'
The APN profile for MTS at Howard Forums list the mms proxy as being '209.4.229.90 ' This is the one I used on my S3, and tethering has always worked for me, and I never had extra charges. There is the 15GB per month limit though.
So I setup a new APN profile with the following settings, and my tethering worked instantly.
Name: MTS
APN: sp.mts
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mmsc2.mts.net/
MMS Proxy: 209.4.229.90
MMS Port: 9401
MCC: Should be auto set to 302
MNC: Should be auto set to 660
Authentication type: Not Set
APN: Not Set

Yup. I knew there had to be a simple way to do it. Looks like the 'MTS Tethering' apn profile is not filled in properly which is why it cannot be selected.

It is now. I made a new APN profile. My default MNC was set to 306 . When I changed it to 660 like you did. The profile was gone so I left it as default the second time then it worked.
Yup. Those APN settings are the ones MTS released back when they originally switched to HSPA. Back then they probably never had a difference how people used their data plans.
Is anyone having issues with tethering working using these settings? Mine suddenly doesn't work. Wondering if MTS changed anything.

I installed Pdanet and everything seems to work. I guess the built in tethering app isn't working.
