Would it be a better idea to perhaps return my phone for a new one perhaps the ones made after the first batch are better and run faster with better battery? Mine of which was made 6/27 it says on my box
I got mine day one and have had only the issues that seem to be universal. Namely the default mediocre battery and occasional stutter, both of which I've solved.
Magicked from my Vibrant by tube traversing XDA elves.
I believe I read elsewhere that the date on the box is actually the ship date, not the date of manufacture...however its likely a strong telling of what time frame the phone was built in.
I went from a 7-2 to a 7-12 with my swap. This one seems a spec quicker, and the lock button is much nicer. Still have GPS and freezing problems though albeit only once so far on the new one.
I've found the battery on both phones to be adequate. As good if not slightly better than my healthy G1.
My box says 7/02 and I haven't had any problems. (picked it up on 7/22)
No issues here and got it on release.

Mind detailing what you did. Did you do the "lag" fix where it moves the app data over to NAND? My battery life is quite good, what did you find was killing your battery?
Box says 7/2/2010 and Ive had 2 different phones, same minor issues
Mine is made 6/27. Im just wondering if i can exchange it, will my phone be better since it being a newer batch.
If the date is after 7/15, then it's a new batch, or possibly later. Otherwise, it was all manufactured under the same design, process, and materials.
Return it if you want to, your decision. My first one dated 7/10 had the menu button acted up and when I exchanged it, it was 7/1, which is much better as of now.

would also like to hear what you found about the battery. mine is suffering horribly. mine more or less sucks.
Short answer: no.
I exchanged my first for a newer made one. The GPS still didn't work any better and the newer one had a rattling volume key. I exchanged rattling volume key phone and the new handset is developing an unresponsive home key.
It could just be my bad luck but an exchange risks a while new set of issues. If your only problem is GPS then I'd say wait it out. If there's another problem, then go for it. That's just my opinion.
If you're getting a constant black (completely DEAD phone, different from unresponsive) freeze up, your Vibrant is probably defective. The only time that has happened on my new one (it reared it's ugly head on my old one) is when I changed the GPS settings without a reboot. Same batch of phones too. So if a reset doesn't solve this, a new one probably will.
I got mine day one and my box says 7/9/10

If i do a factory reset while the phone is rooted, will it brick the phone?
i've been thinking of doing it but i don't know what is going to happen to the phone.
i just want to see if that fixes some of the issues i'm having as some people say that it works better after a reset.
i'm i going to have to root it again?
Do all the first batches have issues. I got mine on the release date, and havent had any real issues with it? wondering if i should swap?
I went from 7-4-10 to 7-10-10. Same GPS issues.

As I said earlier, mine says 7/02, but I thought I should mention that my GPS has no issues either. I just tested Lookout's "Find My Phone" feature, and it was accurate, right on top of my house.

Mines 7/12 with ZERO problems. My GPS works fine, the fits air tight...all good.
Now to answer your question, IMO I firmly believe that every electronic device has a personally of their own. Call it crazy, but I've found it to be true over and over again.
I've had phones in the past that were of the same batch but total lemons. When I swapped it out it was perfect.
It doesn't matter what batch it comes from, you'll always get lucky ones and not so lucky ones. It's just the way it is and that's a fact. (Heck, explain how out of the six Vibrants I have, my phone's SAMOLED was the clearest and bluest one out of them all? It was like the odd ball of the litter if you know waht I mean, but I like that it's different. The bluish tint is fresh. Now when I look at other screens they seem too soft and yellow to me. They are all 7/12 shipped date.)
So if you feel the need to swap, the by all means do it. You have nothing to lose and another chance to land a lucky one, that is IF yours is acting up.
GOod luck!
enough time passed to see comparisons with some roms, kernels and the stock android itself.
(this is all compared to the nexus one by the way)
i cant help but find myself trying to find reasons to enjoy this phone, more than my previous pure google phone.
between the irony of this having everything first and yet not having the updated market....the whole idea that stuff is not yet 'ready' or 'recoded' for gingerbread and that whole GPU isn't optimized for better browsing....to the complete lack of browser modes (about:debug to get desktop! are u kidding me)
ive thoughouly tested all roms, and its early, obviously but all have glitches. CM can never re-up its 3g or any connection at times after being in a nozone area. modaco has a few random ones and dropped it all together. crackflashers mods are a disaster when you go deeper in the late 30's to 40's. trinity kernels gets crazy too, and dont you dare mix that with all the other aformentioned. oh and the stock has constant random reboots...as does all these roms and kernels.
thank the lord for rommanager and titanium back up. i never appreciated it as much after having such a wierd phone.
hate me all you want, go as far to say that im *****ing. all im saying is that im heavily testing the phone. and comparing it to a year old phone..nexus one is starting to really look better even with a worse screen.
all in due time i guess. heres hoping that patches ALL around come..im talking google patches. samsung patches and then dev patches.
So far the only significant complaint I have after two weeks that is actually about the Nexus S and not some app I have on it is the ringtone problem. Admittedly annoying, but hardly a snafu.
The browser lag/lack of optimization and home screen issues are pretty big problems, if you ask me. It's quite obvious this phone was a little rushed. Hopefully Google fixes this all sooner rather than later.

+1. Love the phone coming from the Nexus One.
I have had my Nexus S since the 19th of Dec. I have never had a random reboot, random ringtone issue or any significant issue. I don't really notice the browser lag.
I have given up on finding the perfect phone for me. They all have their issues. In the past year, I have owned the Iphone 3g, Nexus One(My favorite of all), HTC G2, HTC HD7, and the Samsung Vibrant. They all have quirks. I have given up hope that I will ever have a phone that does everything I would like. For now, the Nexus S is a good phone for me.
I am not that excited about the upcoming dual-core phones, i don't think battery tech is ready yet.
The browser lag is annoying, but I only really get it bad on pages with Flash elements. That indicates to me it has at least something to do with Adobe's plugin.

Even though most of us set the Adobe plugins to on-demand? I've noticed the lag on all pages that have a lot of graphics. Heck, with pages that don't have a lot of graphics, there's a little stutter when double-tapping to zoom in/out.
I'm not in denial at all.
I hate my Nexus One in many ways, much more so than any gripes I have with the Galaxy S or Nexus S (I own and use all three actively, still).
My N1 had plenty of big issues, none of which were ever fixed via software:
1) the capacitive buttons' touch zone are offset by at least 50% to painted location
2) the touchscreen frequently goes wonky and was never particularly accurate in registering touches (very difficult to type)
3) the screen is so oversaturated in red hues that watching video podcasts is like watching people with bad sunburns
4) the camera has a big pink blur in the middle of every picture
5) the thing was unusable in sunlight.
The N1 had some nice features, like the trackball, and a nice look and feel in the hand, but it is far from the Holy Grail of phones people not satisfied with their N1 try to make it out to be.
My SGS and NS have quirks, but they're software. The SGS was not usable after a couple of days due to lag, but some custom roms fixed that. The touchscreen is dead-on accurate and has more multi-touch points than the N1. The SAMOLED doesn't have a red or pinkish cast to it, and it looks great, even outdoors. The hardware feels a bit light and creaky after 6 months, but I have disassembled it several times to try hardware mods, and I may be responsible for the creak around the bezel.
The Nexus S is solidly built, feels better in the hand than either the NS or SGS, looks much sexier than both, has a great screen in both touch accuracy and appearance. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good phone. The software bugs will be worked out in relatively short time, either by google or through a custom rom.
I don't hate you for posting this, but what's the point? You're not happy with the phone and you still love the N1. Take the NS back and end your misery...
If you trying to get rid of it, do it soon, this phone's resale value won't hold up like the N1 did. Just sold 2 NS brand new in box and the price fetched is well a fair price but nowhere close the retail price.

but i've not seen it at all when i browse the web with any of the browsers installed
i've all of them installed
each one has its pros and cons
but none of them lags, so i'm not really sure why people are complaining about it
I have also had this device a day after release and I have not had any problems with it. Granted it's not perfect but I love this phone and wouldn't trade it until the next nexus comes out

I have had a SNS for 48 hours now, coming from an xperia x10i, so here is my thoughts for what they are worth. The nexus seems to me a solid handset, no frills and business like. The browser is a bit choppy, but aside from that I have found no issues. The xperia showed me the joys of root and roms...I took it as far as it could be thanks to its locked bootloader (MASSIVE respect to the XDA dev teams and people). The xperia went from a rather poor device through to a fast and impressive device (by XDA magic.) and I got the Nexus because from what I have read, it will be brilliantly customisable. I rooted and got recovery right out of the box, and wait in anticipation to lots of great ROM's.
I could of gone for a Desire HD which is a more flash and complete device....but it was Nexus all the way for me. Lets wait a few months and see how SNS is before jumping over to dual core 'next best things'
I wouldn't go so far as to say people are in denial. I believe people when they say they love their Nexus S. I really like it too, but I do think people are fooling themselves regarding the value of the Nexus line in general. We're imagining a large disparity between stock Android and manufactured OEMs that simply isn't true, or more specifically, simply not as true as we want it to be. Stock Android has not liberated us from the issues which we shun OEM skins for, and in fact, have created a slew of new glitches (some of which are arguably worse: rebooting phone calls, for example). The things we complain most about of OEM skins still exist to some degree in stock Android. Likewise, Bloatware is blown way out of proportion. Yes, they are unwanted, but do they really do so much harm? The answer no one wants to admit to is no.
Considering developers will more likely than not port over any and every new Android iteration to future phones, sometimes with improvements, and considering there are only 2 major updates from Google in a year's time anyway, I'm beginning to reevaluate the value of the Nexus line.
Of course, everyone will have different preferences. My past experiences with Android have always had OEM skins, and I was possibly making excuses to keep liking something from Google. Now that I'm using stock and there are no more excuses, I'm not sure if I can safely say Android is for me, even though I really want it to be.
I think the op should move on sell the phone and invest in a handset that really suit his needs. All I seen in his posts on other threads have been negative towards the handset.
You done all the testing that has been done. So why continue to lament..
Do yourself a favour sell it whilst you can recoup the cost. Get something you really want..
I like my NS. I know the phone has problems. My personal experience has been a positive one. Yes the handset has flaws but I can get round them. It suits what I want it to use it for.
That's it.

The value of the Nexus line is easy to root with no effort from the manufacturer to stop you, and supposedly first in line for OS updates.
Nexus One owners might argue that they we'ren't first in line for 2.3 - but they got 2.2 months before anyone else, and they might be next in line for 2.3.
The "pure" Google experience is a myth in my opinion, at least the "I got the phone for the pure Google experience" comments are. An awful lot of people already flashing or chomping at the bit to flash custom roms.
All that other stuff you posted is just your expectations, not everyone else's.

Your very right. Its not perfect yet, its not the one with the biggest screen, best camera, most memory etc etc.....I knew that when I brought it, but its a damn cool device! Look at my xperia....1.6 android and laggy but.....With XDA I made it a beast lol And I believe the Nexus will grow into a real beast!!

Good points, but to say the rest of what I wrote are expectations exclusive to me is clearly wrong. It's been ceaselessly reverberated at this forum that the Nexus line is all about a clean Google experience, free of OEM skins which hamper the phone, and free of career bloatware. Some have gone as far to call not having a logo on the front of the phone alone worth it.
Again, not trying to take away people's happiness with the NS; everyone will have different preferences, but what I wrote is not exclusive to me.
I just hit my 30 day mark on my Shift. I thought I would share my thoughts on the phone and encourage others to do the same.
I came from the Touch Pro and this is my first experience owning an Android phone. I am still stock and not rooted. The phone is running incredibly smooth. Battery life has been very good. I can easily go 15 hours with heavy usage on a single charge. I did buy a car charger, but haven't needed to use it even though I have used the music player and Pandora for over an hour sometimes.
While I didn't buy the phone for the keyboard, I have found I use it as my primary input method. The camera is decent, but won't win any awards. The camera needs to be absolutely still, or photos will come out blurry. Video is similar as fast moving objects will tend to blur?
All in all I am very happy with my purchase. This is the best phone I have ever owned. I have said this about my last 5 phones, but isn't that what technology is all about?
well at least ya didnt own a moment before this. that phone was just about enough to sour anyone on a phone. the only saving grace on it was rooting and android. otherwise it was a POS this phone absolutely rocks
I am coming from an HTC Aria that was rooted and a nightly build of CM7 on it. I have had my new Shift for for about a week now. I have it rooted and have all the bloatware removed. I love the phone so far, I can't wait to get some ROMs installed on it to see how it really performs.

I'll let you know when my new one arrives in the mail.
The slider on my current one is so insanely loose I had to get it replaced, and being on an employee plan they have to ship me a new phone and a mailer to return the old phone. Hopefully the slider won't be so loose on the new one--this one can rotate about 10 degrees when fully open and holding one side up....very annoying
This all sounds good being im available for a discount on a new phone. Coming from the Evo..fully rooted, it annoys me the processor can only go to 1.19Ghz stable on aosp. What turns me on about the Shift is that it can OC to 1.51Ghz so far. I may just give it a shot.

I posted the same link in the epic forums. Also notice the last line in the article says "Image courtesy of Engadget. Not indicative of the Kyocera Echo's design." So the picture is just a render. Not the real thing.

I came from a Touch Pro as well. I absolutely love the Evo Shift. The size of the phone is perfect and the keyboard is great (two main reasons for getting this phone). The phone seems very fast compared to what I'm used to and the Android Market is great; I can't believe the number of free apps.
Loving mine so far. Also still on stock ROM. Dabbled with some temp rooting, but have yet to attempt the perm method. Might have to root soon as I'm running out of internal space =O. I still have 2 more days to consider returning it, but don't think I will. Didn't realize there were o/c'ing kernels already out. I'm curious if I can hit 1.8GHz =D
I upgraded all the way from a Centro. I was pretty good with that keyboard, so really wanted the hw keyboard again.
However, with Swype installed, I never use the keyboard! I've opened it a few times for some technical input, but other than that, it stays closed.
I hate the z hinge on the g2 and was happy to hear the shift was a slider. However, now I want the z-hinge! I feel like the shift slider is getting looser. Its no where near what some people report, but it definitely has some play in it when closed.
I am very happy with the purchase overall. I never would have thought I'd also be happy with a phone with the same screen size except no slider.

yeah, I removed mine right away out of habit, and it's loose enough that I'm getting a new one (which I won't be removing the plastic if it stays on good). I was actually thinking of putting a piece of scotch tape on the back to help with it, but never got around to it before ordering a new one.
I am thinking the Zagg screen protector might work if cut to fit in those areas. It should provide enough resistance to keep the keyboard shut.
I've currently got an iPhone 4 and I'm bored of it. I've also just got a Nexus 10 and I love it. When it's back in stock, I think I'm going to pick up a Nexus 4 (if I can fast enough!) and give it a go.
So, is there anything I should know about this phone? (aside from the basics) Thanks!
I guess you should now how to flash custom ROMs. It's a shame if you didn't. There are so many tweaks. Like display control, to make the screen look awesome. But on the other hand: one of the reasons people buy Nexus phones is because they have stock Android, and stock Android is awesome.
You should know how to customize the living **** out of your Nexus. Not only with custom ROMs and kernels, but also with homescreen/lockscreen customization. Go to mycolorscreen.com to see what's possible.
You should know that it's made from glass. Don't drop it. Or use a case. I still wouldn't recommend dropping it, with or without a case.
You should know that you won't be able to expand the memory. It's 8GB/16GB and that's it. No SD card, not even USB OTG/Host mode. If you're not happy with 16GB, you will need to use cloud services.
I guess you should also know about some minor issues. Earpiece buzzing. Rattling. But those are minor and I wouldn't really worry about them. A lot of people don't even notice them.
I could tell you all the pros and cons, but if you've already made your mind, I can just say that you've made a good choice.

These issues are only with certain batches of the phone, current and future batches probably won't have any of these issues. Mine is from a December batch and doesn't have an earpiece buzzing issue. The only so called ''issue'' I have is the rattling of the camera focus which isn't a production issue at all, although it does make the device feel less solid when you put it down on a surface and hear the rattling.
I've actually heard from a friend that LG are halting production on the nexus 4 so they can make their new smartphone? Whether this is true or not remains to be known, but it sucks if true, I really fancied this phone as a new android phone.

Hey everyone,
So, I've acquired my Z3 from Tmo on Oct 29th, the day it was released. Thus far, I've pretty happy with it. The battery is amazing, although I know it will last me over a day, or more, I'm stuck in my old habits of charging...which I am attempting to get used to better battery life. Anywho, here's my cons with this phone:
-I was using a Samsung Galaxy S3 (T999). The touch screen worked great. This phone though, I've had delays or my touches not being noticed. More so when I first turn the phone on to the lockscreen. If I give it about 10 seconds, it will respond to all touches.
-Along the same lines as the lockscreen not acknowledging all my touches, this also happens during various games or apps. Playing Arcane Legends, for instance, when I attempt to move, sometimes it doesn't. If I retry two or three times, it will then start working.
-I also get crackling sounds during calls, not all the time, but it is often enough. Also, when I have the touch sounds enabled and speakers plugged into it, it often also makes crackling sounds.
-Had many more settings to choose from when I was using Cyanogenmod 11 on my SGS3. I would figure this to be the case, but I do miss some settings, especially some Security-based ones. Maybe there are secret menus?
-I also wished that the LED was brighter... in my opinion it is really dim.
With all that being said, and knowing that Android L is on the way in a few months, I'm more than willing to wait to see is these issues are resolved. If not, I'll be getting a hold of Sony support to resolve these issues.
I'm curious if any of you have had these issues and if you've found workarounds.
As far as the pros, they outweigh the cons noted above. Battery is awesome, responsiveness if awesome, the overall experience is awesome. Works well with anything that I throw at it and its still goes beyond that.
Thanks,
Johnathan

As far as the pros, they outweigh the cons noted above. Battery is awesome, responsiveness if awesome, the overall experience is awesome. Works well with anything that I throw at it and its still goes beyond that.
Thanks,
Johnathan

I'd like to also add, that as far as functionality of the phone itself, the rotating flaps for the exposed ports seems to be a little flimsy and can easily break. This worries me a bit that if they are accidentally snapped off due to slight mishandling... you'll lose your waterproofing.
Also, I don't like that the volume options when using the volume up and down buttons isn't more granular. For instance, when I wanted to increase the SMS notification volume, I had to go through Setting instead of having more volume options when the buttons are pressed. Did I miss a setting?
Considering getting it replaced to see if that's the issue with the touchness delay or crackling sounds.
Thanks,
Johnathan

The phone comes with an extra USB cover, won't lose anything. MicroSD/Sim shouldn't come off very often. I don't think you need be concerned.

Elysian893,
I am not concerned for my own experience, however I can see where this can be an issue.
Waiting for my DK48 magnetic dock to arrive, which will alleviate my concern.
Thanks,
Johnathan
Johnathan,
I've experienced some crackling/popping when on a call without using my headset. After a reboot though, it seems to have gone away. The last 2 days, my battery began lasting no more than 5-6 hours. I thought that it might have something to do with an app, so I began experimenting and found that the Sony Photo upload service was hanging, and also Lookout was scanning everything constantly. I uninstalled Lookout and disabled the Sony uploads and things seem to have returned to normal, although I will need another day or so to evaluate.
FWIW, here is my review I posted over the weekend:
___________________________________________
Never owned a Sony phone but now I "have a Sony for my Owny" (older folks will get this line)! I must say - I am in love with one caveat - that being a locked bootloader. Pretty disappointed in that however I was happy to read a page or 2 back that I will likely still be able to root which is really all I care about. That said, the bloatware on the D6616 is minimal, so aside from liking to try out new ROM's and removing ads, I guess I can live with that one "caveat".
The phone itself is gorgeous - in fact, I told my wife that it's almost as sexy as she is (yeah - I take my phone's pretty seriously )! I love its size - I had a OnePlus One which I was pretty happy with, but being an average size guy (that's being generous), I found it really difficult to use it with one hand. The Z3 has a slightly smaller screen size vs the OPO, but the overall build size is proportionally smaller as well, making it even more attractive size-wise. Of course, the other side of that coin is that the OPO has a non-slip back in the 64gb version which was really nice, however I see that wearing out over time. The Z3 is slippery meaning I will likely cover the beautiful beast with a case - but we'll see if I end up keeping a case on it. I've always been one to believe that if you have insurance and a beautiful device, covering that device with a case is counter-intuitive. I'm torn on the case thing - time will tell.
The phone is incredibly smooth and responsive, the speaker is pretty loud and sounds good, and the camera is arguably the best available on a phone. Not sure I like all the options the camera offers - many or pretty hokey - but the picture quality is just brilliant. Overall, this phone may last me more than a year which would beat my last two phones. You see, I have "NewPhone-itus" and it's a serious case!
If anyone has any questions - fire away and I will do my best to answer!
I'm surprised at the z3 hate on xda. With all the complaints about the camera, build quality, software issues, etc, I find myself getting paranoid looking for problems with the phone. The truth is that it's a pretty great phone so far. Great battery, great camera, fast and responsive, and yes, as sexy as shermcraigs wife ?. A week in and I'm happy with my trade from my m8.

Its not that the phone itself is bad per say, its the lack of consistency/quality control. I am on my 4th one here due to various issues from indented frame to bad camera to light bleed to massive screen gaps. Thanks to T-Mobile 14 day policy I was able to through so many phones. A rep had to open 5-6 phones to give me a good one when I got my third only to find it has a massive ligh tleak on on side. The one I got today thank god is finally issueless so far at least. My local T-Mobile store is sending many back to Sony, they are actively opening boxes, checking for defects and returning before even giving to customers.
I have owned phones from practically every company, this is the first time I have had to return a phone, let alone 3. All companies have issues with initial batches but this was just too widespread. I am sure future batches will be rectified, its one of the down sides of immediately adopting a new model as soon as release.

I would seriously doubt it - he was exchanging a bad unit,
not returning. Big difference.

No fees, because its a defect and you are asking for the same model. Fee is only if you switch models.

Did you do it within the first 14 days?
Maybe color change constitutes the equivalent of model change.

yup within 14days
I haven't experienced any lag with the touch screen, but I've experienced slow screen rotation.

My sister exchanged her white GS4 for another white one due to yellowish tint on top, they did it for free. I think because you just wanted a color change and there was no defect they charged you.
I have T-Mobile.
My only gripe is that there is no Group MMS built in. It really, really sucks. And it is causing me to return this phone in a few days. I can use Textra (or Google Hangouts) for Group MMS, but it will not send them out when WiFi Calling is enabled. I know there is a "WiFI Calling fix" option specifically for T-Mobile phones when using Textra, but all that does is disable WiFi when sending/receiving MMS messages and then re-enables it. That completely defeats the purpose of WiFI Calling if you're not going to have service in a certain area.
Group MMS is extremely important to me. For whatever reason, only stock messaging apps have the capability of utilizing T-Mobile's WiFi Calling to send/receive MMS. (SMS works fine).
My HTC One m7 had the ability to do it with its stock messaging app. So, for now, I have no choice but to return my phone, fight the $50 restocking fee, and go back to my paid off HTC One. I am speechless that this phone does not support it.
