Used full tar file on dev device. - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All i get now is a bootloop. I have tried flashing back to the nk2 firmware via odin but then it kicks me straight to recovery. It isnt the custom recovery though, so i think i may have locked my bootloader. Is there anything to be done from this? I usually can find my way out of this stuff but I feel like a just wrecked my galaxy s5.

You flashed a retail firmware which locked the bootloader. I'm pretty sure you made a $600 paperweight. Sorry I'm not much help.

Did you backup your developer edition aboot?

[Q] sgh-i337 post OTA update

I have a sgh-i337, I tried to format my rom and threw everything at it but the kitchen sink but could not get it cleared. Then I looked around and found out about the write protect issue on the bootloader from at&t and verizon. (chattr +i /boot/system.tar.md5) It's not difficult to figure out what they did.
Needless to say I am softbricked right now with all the user data deleted. I did back up in kies but it is asking me for a number I never saw.
Is there a patch for fixing the at&t immutable bit on the bootloader?
Is there a download that will help me launch my phonetop?
We know the bootloader and system files are just fine... :silly:
The boot loader is still locked. The stock kernel and recovery cannot be replaced.
The link to stock firmware is available in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
You can use Odin to flash the stock firmware. You can flash the same or newer version only.

[Q] AT&T Galaxy S4 on 4.4.4, help with flashing recovery

Hey folks. I'm finding a lot of threads from 2 years ago and unfortunately they aren't much help with my device. I've inherited this phone, and my goal is to upgrade to CM12. Unfortunately I'm dealing with AT&T's locked bootloader and other issues.
I'm currently on Android 4.4.4, Baseband I337UCUFNJ4. I've managed to get root access using the Odin method of flashing NC1 then back to NJ4, root is working., but I've been unable to flash an updated Recovery. I've tried everything except for the Safestrap method, which last I read wouldn't work for installing Cyanogenmod. Using Odin, I've tried to flash CWM Recovery after converting the .img to a .tar.md5 (Odin failed to transfer this), I've tried using ROM Manager to install Recovery (claimed to work, but actually did nothing), then also used Flashify and Rashr to flash, which seemed to get further, but upon reboot the phone gave an error about software not authorized by AT&T.
I've done way too much googling this weekend and trying all sorts of things that haven't worked, from all sorts of threads from 2013 and 2014, does anyone have a reliable method that works if I'm already on 4.4.4, or am I still out of luck with this device? There is no SIM in the phone right now, but I may want to use it as a phone later if I can upgrade to CM12.
You're pretty much stuck. Only ROMs you can flash are AT&T official stock ROMs for the S4, or ROMs that are specifically safestrap-compatible. No other recovery will work, either.
That being said, if you're interested in lollipop, there's a stock, deodexed lollipop ROM for our phone that is safestrap-compatible on here called Goldeneye v53 that I enjoy.

I'm in the same situation as you, I ended up using safestrap with Pure Nexus http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/development/rom-google-edition-s4-t2837239
Closest I could get to a desirable phone without original Samsung FW. Good luck
Hmmm. What I'm wondering at this point is how does the bootloader get onto the device originally? Can't a working bootloader from another model S4 be flashed in place of the AT&T one?
I would imagine that there must be some software that can be used to fully wipe the phone, repartition the memory, write a new bootloader, etc. If a phone were hard bricked, it would seem that there would be a way that Samsung or some carrier can use to get the phone working again.

Installing PF4 MM onto my OK3 5.0

This phone has been such a pain in the ass. My s4 was easy and my sprint s5 was cake to work with. This VZW s5 has been a royal headache.
Im living in a homeless shelter so I really dont wanna end up softbricked overnight before I can try to fix it at the library the next day.
Iam currently downloading a Deodexed/Debloted PF4 Rom for my VZW phone, got it on droidviews, PM me for the link it wont let me post it
So it looks like it has you use flashfire to install the rom and then has you Odin the proper Bootloader. Is this going to work for me?
When I was rooting the phone it had me messing with different kernals and stuff so I just wanted some clarification or something if anybody can provide some.
Thanks,
Raedon
I have both the Roms. The one for the unlocked bootloader and the locked one as well. Is there any easy way to see if my bootloader is unlocked?
Im pretty tech savvy but this **** is ridiculous.
Boot to download mode if you see a line that says developer mode you are bootloader unlocked

In download mode it looks like my bootloader is locked. Is installing MM as simple as flashing the rom with flashfire and then flashing the new bootloader in odin?
Sounds like cake for real.
Yes you can install it in flash fire by having the firmware on your device then open flash fire app and click plus symbol in bottom right corner and choose flash firmware and choose the firmware let it check md5
then make sure inject su or root is off
Then click flash
You will lose root if you flash an official mm firmware and there is no way to root mm
Well I softbricked my phone and Im boned until tomorrow. I followed the instructions in the thread
"[How-To] Update to G900V_PF4 - 6.0.1"
It says at the top "**You can begin the following process from any Build/ROM but you must already have Root Access**"
You have to be rooted since it requires FlashFire. I downloaded the locked bootloader version since my bootloader is still locked. Followed all the directions and ended up stuck on the samsung screen. I have 40 minutes to try and fix this until Im stuck all night.
Im just gonna try to put the stock factory PB1 back on with the PB1 bootloader. Id love to get this 6.0.1 on my phone tomorrow tho
Boot to recovery and wipe data and cache

Looking for modem and bootloader backup please!

Hello all, I have a Total Wireless aka Verizon TracFone branded S5, so it's model s902l but it's g900v hardware with unlocked bootloader. Of course they never released any updates so I'm wondering if some will share a twrp backup of the newest, or if you believe another is better, their modem and bootloader for me I'd like to try it, worse case I restore my backup if it doesn't take.
Thanks

The Modems are located on the following thread.

As far as the Bootloader... you will need to be careful when it comes to that because you can permanently lock it up and, possibly, brick it too.
I'm not sure where any of the separate Stock Bootloader files are on the forum since those who, typically, need it installed back on the device normally just flashes the Stock Firmware via Odin.
I've got a feeling that you might possibly be referring to the Stock Recovery and not the Bootloader.

There's a handful of TWRP flashable ones in the OP of that thread.
The only reason that the thread title states "Odin" is because most of them are Odin flashable ones.
I'm one of the threads Developers and u planned on creating the additional Recovery flashable ones soon but, am just delayed a bit.
The Odin flashable ones are actually the preferred method for most members anyway because of the additional safety checks by Odin.

I'll look again but read on one of the posts that they weren't TWRP flashable? I don't have a computer to use Odin right now and last time I tried those very safety checks you mention prevented me from flashing 900v files to my 902l branded phone. Ended up with a read only modem for a bit for trying. Of course the only factory firmware available anywhere is older than what came on mine and what sounds like everyone else's branded phone so have to be careful. That's why I was hoping for a backup to try rather than flashing something, maybe I don't fully understand the process but thought it'd be a safer route?
Am I supposed to use one of the SS/FF zips?
Last time I was attempting to upgrade my bootloader and modem I was following a thread that was supposed to both upgrade those and unlock the bootloader of actual 900v phones. According to that thread SS/FF zips aren't compatible with TWRP because they work differently?
Well I tried the newest available zip, it took about 15 minutes to flash and said successful but baseband still s902ludu3aog2 so that didn't work... Still hoping to get ahold of a backup I can just restore it at least try, unless someone has another suggestion on how to get newer 900v modem and possibly bootloader on my 902l model 900v hardware?
So nobody is willing to share a backup of their modem and bootloader?!?!

I think, flashing a bootloader from another S5 variant is a bad idea, most likely you'll brick the phone. Prepare an unbrick microsd at least to be ready, but nothing is guaranteed.
I don't think you'll manage to flash modem and bootloader from TWRP because TWRP means Samsung's binary state: custom and these partitions are protected in custom state.
I think, your best bet is to revert to factory recovery, get Samsung binary: official, root the phone and use SS or FF.
Not possible, factory firmware doesn't seem to exist, only 1 does and it's older than what it came with from the factory. Also it's Verizon hardware, same FCC id, but different model and comes with unlocked bootloader. I don't want to flash anything, I just want to restore a backup.
I appreciate your advice but I already been thru all of this...
Flashing is simply not going to work unless there's a way to change my device model maybe?
All I really want is somebody with a modem and bootloader newer than KitKat to please back them up in TW RP and share them please.

If the hardware is physically identical I don't understand why running a bootloader meant to run on this exact Hardware would cause a problem?
But I'm primarily interested in an updated modem. Neither will Flash since there are no updated modems for this MNVO branded Verizon phone.

SM-G900V, DQI2, TWRP 3.2.1-0, boot (kernel) and modem backup.
TWRP cannot backup bootloader, but I can try dd if you need.
Good luck.

Selling a rooted S4, but I want to factory reset. Can I?

Hello
I need to sell my S4, and it is rooted. I'd like to do a factory reset on it, but I ask if doing so will lose root. I rooted it back in 2017, so I don't remember what I did to it, but I assume that I unlocked the bootloader so that I could root.
I can erase all data and pictures and apps manually, and leave it clean AND rooted, but I might prefer to do a factory reset. If I lose root, it won't be a big deal since any potential buyer of this phone might not even know what root is.
Thanks and be safe
Rooting the S4 has nothing to do with the bootloader, if you have a custom recovery installed then you're on the MDL or MDB bootloader which is a rare exploited bootloader. If you want to reset the phone, I would use Odin to do it by flashing the stock firmware you're currently on.

Thanks Stoney.. Might you know where I can find the latest stock odin file?

That depends on your current bootloader. You can flash the one you're on or flash a newer one. You can't flash an older one after a newer one though. Check your bootloader, if you're on MDL then you need the MDL firmware. If you're on anything else aside MDL then you will need other firmware.
