Its official : 1/4th the thinking power - Nexus 6 General

Saw on amazon that the nexus 9 is about $270 ( used and in good shape ) so I started to check out / compare its abilities.
Ran into this page : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59566633&postcount=1
Hmmm, I like chess and I can try that out on my shamu . . .
Got an nps score ( at the bottom ) of : 266 whereas the N9 got a score of : 1024 and 1049 .
So, doing the math, Volantis is four times smarter than that shamu .
( fish story )

Um... I can promise you that this is NOT a valid analysis.
That benchmark is specifically checking functions used for that CHESS application.
That means that it is a very narrow perspective benchmark.
A good quality chess AI (which this is most likely NOT) will be helped out immensely by 64bit.
A very bad quality chess will be a bag of random crap.
Another thing I'd like to point out... just for fun I installed it to test myself.... and got 721 knps. I wonder if you remembered to set the number of threads? Because that's nearly three times what yours got... I'm positive that I could get it over 1000 with very little tweaking. Not that it would actually prove anything.

I own both. The Volantis is the worst performing Android device I've ever owned.

The responsiveness of the UI. Opening apps, multi-tasking and so forth. To me it feels like I'm using a Kindle from 3 years ago.
I see some of the same issues to an extent on the N6. But Ars Technica says 5.1 speeds the N6 up.

5.1 on the N6 is crazy good. I hope it fixes the 9 also because I want one!

it's 1am in Sydney and I've stayed up and read the review, now I can't sleep because I keep thinking about the gs2, just a week or two that's all I have to wait, anyone want to buy a second hand ip4 lol
its funny that one of the comments claims that the iphone 5 will be much better than the sgs 2...
sgs 1 even beats iphone 4 hands down and the diffrences between ip5 and ip4 is most likely just another camera

read up on some rumors - iP5 will be thinner, slightly bigger edge-to-edge screen, dual core CPU, and I am sure a bunch of other cutting edge features. Apple is a respected power, can't deny that.

Still, nothing more than a dedicated blogger could do - Where are the measurements?
Wifi: maximum range and throughput over range
Cell radio: quality of GSM / UMTS reception in known good and known bad spots
GPS: TtFF cold and hot, accuracy over time, both stationary and moving; comparison to a reference standalone GPS, ...
Audio: freq response, noise floor, harmonic and non-harmonic distortion, stereo crosstalk etc.
Screen: brightness (min and max), contrast, color accuracy
Camera: see any decent digicam review (but they did have full-res shots, yay!)
I'm not saying build a testing lab, but once upon a time the difference between an amateur review and a professional one used to be the testing equipment and methodology employed.

Thinner, I don't know, it's gotten a bit ridiculous by now. The phones are getting hard to hold as it is. Same for edge-to-edge - where am I supposed to hold the thing? Even with current gen phones I manage to obscure the screen or even trigger something with my hand.
So I think we're golden!

lol. i chuckled when you said iphone killer. this thing obliterates the ip4. now ip5 is going to be a tough battle, but i think the "smarter" users will agree the sgs II will be better. From where i stand though, the only thing iphone keeps killing android is with extremely user friendly ui, especially how gorgeous apps look on the platform. Has anyone seen the dj app for ipad. i mean you cant get better than that. And secondly, the apps availability, android has maybe 50 good games, while iphone has over 500..same with regular apps.
I hope android starts focusing less on (sorry to say)useless features like live wallpapers and focuses on making the dev kit more polished like apple. Hardware wise, theres no doubt the sgs2 is a monster.

Agree + the GPU that sucks. Internal memory is easily fixable though.
Unfortunately, apple can't afford to simply "catch up" with their android competitors. They need to come up with something new to make people feel "special" just because they have an iphone. After all, Apple has always been about making you feel like you were part of a VIP club when buying their products.

It's very well written and objective. I think that the best praise I could give is that you came with an open mind. When comparing to other reviews, many were immediately critical of Samsung for the large size - you acknowledged that it was for a niche audience.

It's pretty decent.
I remain amazed at how few reviews discuss how awesome it would be to use the Note as a GPS, with its fast lock time (GLONASS), large screen, and free Navigation. I think it's a big selling point, not just for the Note but for android as well.
- Frank
Agree with the comments above good review Andy and I am following you on youtube (along with NZtechfreak) as well.
Thanks guys
I'm a little annoyed with myself, I meant to put in a picture of me using it as a SatNav, as it certainly is very good for it. Maybe I'll edit it in this week
Very good review. Also matches pretty well my opinion of the device, except for camera that seams clearly worse then S2. I have the Note for an week and i took plenty of shot with it. I think the aperture of Note < S2, also the diameter of the lens is smaller

Yeah, the only two shots I had I could directly compare, one I was worried it was more about weather, the other they looked very similar.
The only thing I would recommend (and this is for all Android phones) is that you abandon the usage of Quadrant as a benchmark. It is inaccurate in terms of real world performance. Sadly, it is also one of the most widely used.
As an alternative I would recommend perhaps Smartbench 2011.
Smartbench wont run on the Note though
Hey Andy, nice review, like your work - I'm pretty disenchanted with the major sites rubbish gadget reviews, it's really nice to see some of the highest quality ones coming from people such as yourself.
Agree with the dark lords comments about Quadrant as a benchmark too, I still include it because lots of people want to know, but I also make sure to include some better benchmarks. Smartbench and Chainfire bench are two of the better ones (of course as you say, and as I alluded to in my own review Smartbench is buckets o' fail for the Note right now).
Oh, and in terms of feedback - more screenshots are good, particularly in a Note review where you can annotate them from the device itself!

As we all can see AnTuTu is clearly gaining it's fair share of reputation and well worth it I believe.
As for benchmarks tests for PC's, they usually subjective to the performance and not real world scenarios.
Also about Quadrant, I agree with what you said 100% but since it's so widely used we can only use it as average of what we are "supposed" to get. Nothing more.
Didnt read any reviews yet , dont own the Note yet ( but I will, unless the Nexus Prime will change my mind), but I did my own testing and comparison tests on some showrooms and I am quite impressed....even the Yamaha dac is better implemented...
I just could not test the GPS...
The gps chipset on my sgs1 needs some assist but it does the Job.(see videos on my sign)
I read that the sgs2 got the sirfstarIV chipset which is impressive cause all my standalone Gps devices got the SirfstarIII.
Does the note got the Sirfstar IV as well?
Tks.

I have owned a lot of devices and SGN has the best GPS by far, yes, better than SGS2. Very accurate and quick!

[DISCUSSION]Nexus 7 2013 vs any other device

Nexus 7 (2013) vs any other device
I'm starting this thread in an attempt to keep this forum as tidy as possible, for all of us. There will inevitably be quite a few threads comparing the 2013 Nexus 7 to other current devices/upcoming devices. Rather than having a separate thread for each, direct all such discussion into this thread as a way to centralize it all.
Please keep all discussions friendly and even if you don't agree with someone's opinion, at least have the common courtesy to respect what they're saying. Keep the Forum Rules in mind at all times.
Anyone got both N7's and would like to compare the 2?
I haven't got my new one yet so it'd be good to see what others have to say in comparison
My current overclocked Nexus 7 scores about 16000 in Antutu and 1850 in Geekbench, before it reaches 75 degrees celsius and thermal throttling kicks in. Hoping to get the upgrade this week.
There are quite a few threads on this, but I can throw in my two cents when comparing it to the n7 first gen and a galaxy tab 2.
First the of n7... I think the new n7 blows the old one out of the water. It is faster in every way, from a boot time several times faster to its raw power where I can even be updating apps while flipping screens. I also noticed the emmc is a lot faster too. The screen in the new n7 really is good as its hyped up to be. I read the news on there a lot and its beautiful. I can go on confirming what all the online reviewers have said, but instead I'll just say I agree with the 'hype'. What I really like here is the better build quality. Its just looks and feels better built and cleaner. My only real complaint is that while the back is nice looking and the device is very thin, this makes it harder to hold on to. Since I use tpu cases I suppose I don't really care that much.
There isn't much to say about the tab 2 7. Its a older tablet lacking a HD screen. Mine is usable with its ROM and oc, but after using a nexus 7 2 its painful to try to switch back. I wouldn't even consider a galaxy tab 2 in this day and age.

The screen really is amazing, but I'm sure there are other things that are going to wow you. The speakers are shockingly good so videos and games are great. There is no doubt in my mind its the best tablet I've had, that's a lot coming from me because its still bone stock and I don't feel the need to put a ROM on it. Its the only stock device I have.

Agreed I think the biggest noticable things from old n7 to n7(2013) is screen watching nd playing games. Speakers are a huge improvement by me. WiFi ois faster connection time not saying it takes

I have both and love my new N7 WAY more. I was never satisified with the screen on the 2012 N7, but the new N7 has a gorgeous screen. The sound is great and it is a MUCH faster tablet. Playing Bloons TD 5, my new N7 can handle WAY WAY WAY more baloons on the screen at once. Thats a ton of math and graphics to deal with and it has no issue. My old N7 used to chug along slowly and get down to easily .5 FPS. I can run some benchmarks for you. Both my N7s are on 4.3 and rooted, no ROM. I was afraid it would be like an iPhone 4 to 4S upgrade, but it is much more of an upgrade than that. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Anandtech Gives Mixed Review to Ascend Mate 7

Thoughts? I'm surprised they didn't mention having any light bleed problems on the left side by the SIM and microSD slots.
Well just one thing I will say that benchmark don't say anything how device behaves in real life !
I jst played mc5 and spiderman 2 and thor and I didnt notice a single lag and graphics were on par with my bro z2.
Only one major site has given such review so nothing much to worry about.

I think he is right on certain things, but on the other hand on his final conclusion he is not realistic.
The camera: yeah it is not as good as the high end phones of today, but it is a lot better then the phones that the mainstream buyers had.
CPU/GPU: CPU wise it performance at the same level as a snapdragon, or it comes close to it...
But that is in a benchmark, in real life and normal use you won't see the difference it all comes down to the software/launcher.
GPU is indeed a generation behind, it is clear as water.
Mainstream users or people that don't play a lot of games won't notice, and if they do play a game 80% is playing a 2D game to kill the time.
Hardcore gamers are indeed better of on a other phone if they plan to keep it for 2 years.
NAND that is a different story, I am not really familiar what that does with your performance in every day usage.
But the reviewer, and in other reviews to, stated that it not have a big impact of the normal usage.
So in the end, I think price wise it is a good deal for many people, the note 4 is in Holland a whopping 300 euro expensively than the mate 7

Wow, i just read the lengthy review of anandtech, and im quite surprised with all the neagatives the reviewer has mentioned -- CPU, GPU, NAND & battery life.
I was wondering if he was using an old and an unfinal version of the software in the mate 7. Although he answered that he was using the late october release, pretty much the latest one.
Bottom line is: as a regular user, i dont give a damn about benchmarks and measurements, as long as my actual experience with the device is awesome. And my experience with the mate 7 has been awesome!

And this phone runs all games easily including asphalt 8, modern combat 5, spider man 2, thor and real racing 3. I'm telling you this because I had played these games smoothly on my phone which is 16Gb variant. And battery life is amazing.

The AM7 is a well built and great performing phone, all tasks are executed well. The camera is far better than this review says, so is batterylife. Daily usage is what matters, not benchmarks and other measurement. They have sold more than 1 mill of this one and the majority of buyers will never know or register the cons mentioned by Anand.
Stupid Anandtech. I am very happy with my device. The best I ever had. My battery never lasted a whole day, rather half day. Now I am enjoying it up to sleep time, still have remaining juice. I don't expect my phone camera to be DSLR camera. The camera quality is sufficient for me.
BTW which phone is perfect in this bloody review? He didn't show many phones in these benchmarks. Why? He deliberately wanted to undermine this lovely phone. Because he knows that people like it. That's it.

ူlol .... ok bro i feel you now bro
This review is shocking.
The truth is the camera is so good on stable shot but not on moving objects. The camera also blows the iPhone 6 in close up shot. In a certain close distance, the iPhone 6 just cannot get a focus but the Mate 7 manages to capture the object with great details. Not to mention the excellent pictures in day light environment, which is no worse than Samsung's 2014 S5 (best in the day light capturing league). In low light, this phone even beats the S5.
The drawback might be when it is used to capture moving objects, because it does not have OIS.
Anyway the camera on the mate 7 is among the best flagships and I am only satisfied on it!
Second is the battery life. In wifi, the phone can have 8 to 10 hours screen on time on my use (mainly on browser, social apps, occasionally light games)! I am not kidding. Please get an equivalent phone with "more efficient" hardware packed like the snapdragon in front of me to compete!
I am a previous Nexus 5 owner. The only problem or step back I feel on this upgrade is the UI speed feeling. But I cannot complain as I came from the fastest phone in the world. However even in this field the Mate 7 still performs acceptable. (fluent, but just no lighting fast like the N5 in ART)
I am very shocked they say this phone still not in the league of the best. Because there are no better options!
Note 4 - Close but a step back on battery life and TW UI
Nexus 6 - Who dare say the camera on the N6 will be better than the Mate 7? Where is the micro SD?
iPhone 6+ - Kidding me but ask me to use a pretty much same size device but with a 5.5'' screen?
So I am sorry, there are no better options so far in the market!
thing is guys when people in these reviews knows that phone comes from china it auto goes negative.. bcos they think china makes crap phones.. they are used to it that it must be all top notch.. but when it comes to iphone sht then auto is everything tolerated bcause it is not from china..
it is just life .. peoples mentality... they do what they want to do.. how they likes it..not genuine way..
like iphone has only 1gb ram they say that is fine as iphone doesnt need it.. but when it comes to android and they wud see 1gb they wud go balistic.. oo only one gb
these guys own isheephones so.. their verdict will be always negative..

Some of the criticism seemed a bit too nitpicky fo me. "The mini USB port isn't perfectly centered."
Really? Come on.

slagging phone on such stupid mentions .. they ar really asholes.. when it comes to htc which has shifted too there is no mention ! or xiaomi mi4 has totaly on left side..

so, how's your experience so far guys ?

if u ask from my part it was awesome .. buying a phone in this range is awesome with such specs .... and also with a good brand name, I was saved from buying a Chinese OEM device , I don't mean they are bad they just lack a brand name...... I don't mean every big brand is good for instance Samsung, Microsoft, Nokia ..... they all have just ruined the smartphone experience
and there is a saviour for mid rangers ...... Zenfone 2 ya I admit they were a bit poor in terms of updates and their aftermaths leading to outrageous customers and unfulfilled desires but still wat does one expect at this price range .....
I have used millions of Samsung devices but there's just one reply to Samsung , DIE SAMSUNG U DONT BELONG TO MAKE ANY ANDROID DEVICES....they don't have durability within a year my grandpa's S5 started being a jerk and gave retarded sot just 4-5 hours previously it was never less than 5 - 5.5..... note edge lags like **** even opening a folder from edge side takes 4 - 5 seconds like for wat m I giving money man.... I bought a flagship not ****
from all these aspects zenfone is way better my next device after 2 years will be either the latest zenfone, moto x (latest one , obvious) , or else any CM running device (any OEM it be)
i will always recommend asus if its continue its amazing bang to buck ratio
Are you 15 based on your username, grammar, sentence structure and "good boy" urg cringe? If so then it is strange seeing someone born in the year 2000 and then realising they would actually be 15 now I'm only 18 but it makes me feel so old... On topic please delete this useless silly post lol.
battery life kind of sucks
Same here. Great phone. wish the touch menus light up and better battery life. no lags here. Just got my mom the red zenfone 2 64gb

I'm disappointed by no mhl/slimport, and lack of any word on an update to 5.1.1....honestly the fact that every new device announced has 5.0 is worrisome. Might bite the bullet, and get the Moro X Pure edition(after I check reviews)
Actually does anyone experience sim cards problem?
I had 2 sim cards but sometimes I am experiencing very slow connections since the newest update in July...
I am not sure if its the new update probelm or just my carriers who is doing some crazy maintence

I'm very satisfied. Everything is at least "good enough", Memory & Performance are awesom, I like the ASUS Skin, less bloatware than Samsung, Battery is like my former Device (GT-N7000, Note 1), Camera better than Galaxy S5. And for that price :good:

No...i think his 12
It is alright. I have never been a fan of the screen. The colors just aren't that great. I have been so used to an amoled screen for the past couple of years, going back to lcd was a big change. I get sim card errors sometimes. It is fast, but I just don't like it as much as the Note 3 I had before. It has the hardware, just isn't as refined software wise to keep me interested. I'm likely going to get a note 4 or try a LG g4.
For that price (the 550ml), i could not expect something better.
It is clearly not a perfect phone (low battery, not a good brightness, cameras videos are not good) but it remains in general a good phone, i do speak about the 550ml version.

Are u using splendid , if not use the customised mode with ur liking of saturation.
Any ways never go for samsung it will lag after few months (6-8 , to be approx) they are not even durable in terms of battery life. Lg is good , but i will recommend ZTE axon pro , moto x style or OP2 .

From the fact you can't read I suspect you are 15 as well.
Children, children...
So far I am very pleased with the ZF2. Many complain about the battery but I get a full day and then some out of it so it is fine to me. I changed the native DPI on mine so I could use five icons on the screen instead of four so I guess that is a bit of a nitpick in a way, but I really like using the native launcher and just could not stand how huge the icons were. The screen's brightness is not a big issue for me as I don't use it in direct sunlight but a dark video is hard to watch at times. The phone is fast and does everything I want so that makes me a satisfied customer.
