With a bootloop issue on my ThinkPad Tablet, I tried to flash a new ROM, but I keep getting "cannot mount /sdcard " or "cannot mount /externalsd" errors while trying to do so from an SD card. Is there another alternative method to get my tablet back to a proper working state again if I cannot do so via an SD card?
do u have a working custom recovery
Sounds like your memory has failed. It's not uncommon. I replaced my motherboard...

Hi all, I'm traing to install a fix, and clockworkMod recovery can't mount /sdcard.
do anyone have a clue on how to fix this?
tks!
I am also having this issue,
i'm using an 8G and 2G sd cards, tried to format them through the computer and through the phone but with no luck
i'm using clockwork recovery 2.5.1
try making a folder on your sd card, clockworkmod.
tried that, and it started working for me, dunno if it was a coincidence though.
2nd init
are u using 2nd init boot menu ??i had this problem with my defy with clockwork and now i'm on cm7 (v4 or something -Clockwork) and it mounts sd card

I had the same problem. I think its due to the original JRDNEM_U3_2.59.0 sbf.
SO... Use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674
When choosing your firmware select the Nordic 2.2.2 (Froyo) version [JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-005]. Then re-root using : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913709
Then you should be able to mount sd card in CWM.

Please tell me how you installed CM7 on the Defy.
I've been trying to install a custom ROM (CyanogenMod) all day on my phone but now I'm pulling my hair out by the clumps. This seems to be one stubborn device to play with. My desire didn't give me any trouble at all.
Please help with the following queries I have:
I have installed 2nd init boot and then was accessing clockworkmod through that.
But when I try backing up my ROM I get the error "cannot mount /sdcard".
On the defy if I press up and power on I get the default bootloader with battery check. I can only get into clockworkmod from the recovery app.
On my desire, I can directly boot into ClockworkMod Recovery by pressing up and power button. I don't remember now how I got t to do that, but I would like that in my Defy too. I suppose this will solve the sdcard problem?
What must I do to install a custom ROM on defy??
EDIT: I followed the cyanogenmod wiki at first and in their method I got stuck at the cp -R command, where I got the error "cannot stat, no such file or directory found" or something like that. I'm at my wits' end here, please help me!

This is hell annoying but simple solution worked on LGO2X. Reinsert SDCARD while in Recovery. It should work in all devices. Nothing stupid to try. Tell me...
It is because you formated your sd card with some other file system. Just go to settings / sdcard and storage . Unmount your sdcard and format it. It will get mounted in cwm from now on .

but how??? its UNDER the battery!!!
Still Can't mount sdcard, after formatting and creating folder on sdcard
phone and software details:
ClockWorkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8
Motorola Defy Eclair, OS 2.1, kernel 2.6.29
SndInitDefy_2.0.apk (Defy 2ndinit)
Android Bootmenu v0.6.1
USB Debugging is NOT on when I reboot.
I formatted the card, remounted it in normal operation, then tried going into the Android Bootmenu and mounting the sdcard, formatting it, backup but none of them worked b/c it couldn't mount the sdcard.
I also tried doing the same thing, but not remounting it in normal operation and shutting it off to no avail.
I also tried adding the folder: /sdcard/clockworkmod but with no luck.
Specifically, when do Custom Recovery, then in ClockworkMod Recovery, do backup and restore and do backup, I get the error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0{
(No such file or directory)
Can't mount /sdcard
This particular version of the OS makes rooting very difficult. z4root doesn't work as it exploited some security feature that was figured in the firmware update. Since I have a mac, even after using mono, I was not able to get SuperOneClick working (it hangs on "waiting for device"). So the only way I found to root was from this post:
[ROOT] G2x Easy Root for Mac and Linux
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048309
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to be able to get a nandroid backup and then use CM 4.03 for Motorola Defy:

Thanks
Same issue on Galaxy S Plus
Have to same situation here with a Galaxy S Plus (9001). Everything works great mounted on the stock rom, but not in clockworkmod. Card is formated as FAT32 with clustersize at 1024 bytes. It's another phone but it might be the same issue ... Reinsert card while in recovery doesn't work, it reboots the recovery I think. Putting a folder 'clockworkmod' on the sdcard also doesn't work.

Is there any advice for this problem? I have the same problem. I realized the last time i rooted and flashed a moto defy (different one than now) i was on T-Mobile USA 2.2. The current phone is T-mobile 2.1. Also, the custom recovery menu is green now. I followed these directions exactly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054447
any help is greatly appreciated.
I just want to have a test phone to put cm10 on. This way i can keep my cm7.2 for daily use, and play around w/ cm10 on my 2nd phone.
Moved to Q&A. Please ask all questions there, thanks.

ADB push the ROM file to internal sd
i searched the forum and cant seem to figure out how to get adb to work when i cant boot into a OS
just setup ADB and drivers on your PC and then connect your TF while in recovery to your PC.
Also, some recoveries have the "mount sdcard as usb storage" option, but in this case you'll need an microsd card.
Help. I was trying to install Cyanogen on my Asus TF300T and deleted all files from my internal memory and SD Card. Now I obviously cannot reboot because there is nothing installed on tablet. When I reboot, it hangs at the Asus startup page. My TF300T is unlocked. How can I restore this tablet? Thank you for any suggestions.

I don't think you can install a ROM from the external sd card. I tried that before this post.
adb push romname.zip /sdcard/

Use adb to put the Rom on the sdcard then boot into recovery and flash it off the sdcard

OK...I gave up on connecting the tablet to my pc and instead installed the ROM file (cm-9.1.0-tf300t) to my external sd card, and then moved the file to /sdcard on my tablet. When I try to install the ROM via TWRP, it gives me the message - E:\Unable to mount /staging. Any suggestions...?

Seems that you are on the last TWRP. This problem is known to some other user and me, too.
I was only able to fix it with wiping everything: You have done that already
Then flashing the latest stock.
DL the stock, unzip it one time you know have a zip called: WW_epad-user-10.4.2.13
Go to this thread and dl the adb pusher
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599332
extracted it and open the Quick ADB Pusher v0.4.1 exe
If you are in TWRP you should seen a number next to select device. Your Pad is in adb mode
click the second browse button from top. Here you can choose the destination folder on your Pad. Choose sdcard
Now drag and drop the WW_epad-user-10.4.2.13.zip on the top empty space under drag and drop
Now push the send button. This should take some time. Once you read file send succesful you have the file on your sd.
Now just flash the stock rom. This should fix all of your problems and you should be up to stock with stock recovery.
So after rebooting and going into stock system Just put all needed files back to internal storage.
Then switch of the pad and switch it back on with Vol- and power and you should be able to go to fastboot again.
Flash the older TWRP via fastboot. Reboot via fastboot while holding Vol- and go back to recovery.
Now you should be able to flash your desired Rom again I hope
and @mikaole is the winner
faster than me
Well, one should note that after installing the Jelly Bean stock ROM there's no way to install Cyanogenmod because of the incompatible bootloader...

so, did it work?
Hi,
I recently bought used Huawei U8800. It had the 2.3.5 rom installed in it when I bought it. Sd card slot was broken. Couple of days ago I decided to install Aurora ICS 4.0.4. I rooted the phone, installed Clock Work Mod 5.5.0.4. I tried to make recovery file to my internal sd card but it frozed multiple times so I could not make recovery file (I waited 1 hour after it first froze but nothing happened). Then I tried to install Aurora rom and everything seemed to work okay. Installation went through without errors. Then I rebooted my phone, but it stays in the huawei boot screen and wont start completely. I tried to install the rom again but I did not get better result. I deleted caches etc on both tries. Is there a way to fix this issue and get to a working rom without using the Sd card?
Sd card slot is completely dead and wont work. I have tried multiple sd cards and they did not work either. They did not work when the phone had 2.3.5 rom and they dont work now. I also disassembled the phone and cleaned the sd card slot with CRC electronic cleaner.
Internal Sd card, CWM and pink screen are working.
Sorry if this message is hard to read. I dont speak english by my nature.
Thanks!

Mount internal SD or use Adb push to place stock ROM on memory. Follow your 2.3 guide somewhere on your section.

So, I managed to install ADB and I pushed the stock rom to the internal sd. I installed it and it worked fine. Today I desided to try this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1976563. Everything went great but after installing partition.zip and rebooting the phone internal sd card stopped working. It says: "E: Cant mount /emmc/ when I try to install zip. After that I read that it is possible to install zips using 6.0.1.5`s sideload function. I tried that, but when I type "adb sideload filename" to cmd, it says: * failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)' *.
Any ideas to get this working?
Thanks!

I tried that but internal sd still won't work.
Hey,
I am trying to go through the steps to unlock the bootloader (A2017U, B20 was the stock) and then later load up TWRP, but I am getting an issue with "can't mount /sdcard" in MiRecovery (or whatever its called, the stock) when trying to install the B20Fastboot.
The SDCard (128GB, Samsung) itself is mounted such that the phone can see it in stock operation and I can use it and move files around, but in MiRecovery it won't load so I can't install from the SDCard. So it appears to be behaving correctly *in* the phone but not in recovery mode. I've tried reformatting but it still won't get past the recovery error with mounting.
Is the card borked? Or is this phone defective in some very specific way that recovery can't mount sdcards? Or did I just mess something up/forget to do something?
Thanks!
Works fine with twrp, not sure about stock.

I'm trying to get through unlocking the bootloader to install TWRP (so you're one step ahead of me), so its the stock that's having the issue.
I think the problem is with the SD card format. a 128Gb SDXC card is usually exFAT. Recovery will only read card formatted to FAT32!
