hi ,
i have N910F ,rooted , custom recovery CWM installed ,..stock ROM and on Lollipop... ...BOC3 ( was on ....BOB4 like you ) unfortunately if you flash you loose root and custom recovery .IF you do a "dirty flash" you should keep all your apps .
i used same CF autoroot version and CWM recovery version i used on Android v4.4.4 ,then Lollipop ...BOB4 and now on
Lollipop ...BOC3 ( I opted for full reset afterwards as i wanted to ) No problems
good luck
Just to be clear about a "dirty flash" in this case I still using odin as a tool , flash the rom , or I have to change some settings in odin ?
Can you please help me with this , the correct steps in flashing the rom ?
Thanks

hi,
if you are unsure about flashing with Odin look on YouTube /XDA or else for an example for Note 4. flashing with Odin.
Dirty flash is only a term to describe that before /after flashing with eg. Odin you did not "factory reset" your device. You juzt flashed over old software.,thus not needing to most likely re install any apps.
Problem is if you had any errors etc in previous Rom you could experience similar issues iin the new Rom. It's your choice
just to give you an example of dirty flash. When i upgraded from Android v 4.4.4 to lollipop BOB4 i did a dirty flash as i was to lazy to re install my apps. and my device was working 100% battery was fine etc. But yes flashing to... BOC3 i felt.. no i had more time on hand and didn't mind re installing
my 168 app i have on device. Used Titanium.. root
So i flashed.. lollipop .. BOC3.. Hard reset device.. flashed Cf autoroot to root.. checked if it was working and then flashed custom recovery Cwm
Downloaded Titanium again.. i have the paid Titanium version (as all 3rd party apps are wiped when hard resetting ) from market and restored all my apps.. from ext sd card i had backed up. before when flashing when i still was on ...BOB4
(Just remember to fix old Android Ext Sd card issue.. i used NextApp sd fix from Play market to get "write permission" as Titanium could not find it on my ext sd
good luck

hi ,
glad you sorted it out..!!!
just to clearify / elaborate my preferred order of "flashing "( above post )
It is still a "dirty flash " ,as you flash over all your apps from old ROM ,
but you correct it, by doing a "factory reset " (etc etc.) straight afterwards .
Other members prefer to factory reset before "flashing " and then again factory reset it again just after flashing . new Rom.. ..
i prefer either a straight "dirty flash" ( no factory reset afterwards ) or method/order i descibed in post above ..!
Reason i don't factory reset, before flashing is that if you factory reset and then flash and your flash goes wrong eg ..errors, corrupt download ,etc etc
you can hopefully , flash old ROM back and still have your old apps working ....but i don't think you are going to be happy reinstalling all your old apps on old ROM .i know i won't with all my apps !!!
good luck

Hi everyone. I have followed the YouTube video by Chris Nacca (http://youtu.be/Ov6BXOu7SwA)that uses TWRP 2.5 custom recovery (file: openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-jfltexx.tar) on my unlocked GT-i9505 S4 using Odin 3.07. Unfortunately, despite the message from Odin indicates all worked fine (<ID:0/004> RES OK !!), on rebooting my phone back into Recovery mode, I am greeted with the Android character telling me there is an Error and then "dying" and saying "No Command".
The phone isn't bricked as I can move the highlight bar through the various menu options at the top left-hand side of the screen and reboot back via my stock ROM but clearly the Custom Recovery hasn't been installed correctly and, despite the Message screen in Odin showing <OSM> All threads completed. (success 1 / failed 0).
I have a rooted and unlocked GT-I9505 with a baseband reading as: I9505ZHUZME1. Anyone got any ideas or advice as to what may have gone wrong as if I can't sort this out I can't move to a custom ROM. :crying:
Many thanks in advance, Jim

Thanks for your reply. Being new to Android, am I correct in assuming that I merely download the last .tar file from the page you provided the link to and install it as I did the TWRP custom recovery file using Odin? Am I right in believing this will leave me with my Stock ROM but I can then do a Nandroid Backup and move to a custom ROM from there when I am ready?

power off device unplug press volume down home power all together till u get download mode and connect to device
the file extension will be .tar use it on PDA at odin and flash it
then u can take a backup of the entire current firmware and keep it to safe place like PC Hard drive and move to ROMS

Thanks. One (hopefully) last question: The link you provided has both *.zip and *.tar.md5 files. I presume you mean I should use the latter, and do I need to remove the last portion (.md5) to make it a *.tar file or use it as is in Odin 3.07?

Sorry, back again. I have done as you suggested (twice) and still can't get my phone to install a custom recovery. While Odin once again reports a successful install (as it did when installed the TWRP custom recovery), when I reboot back into custom recovery mode after installing PhilZ Touch custom recovery (as indicated by the blue text on the start-up screen), I no longer get the dying Android figure as I did when installed TWRP custom recovery, but the screen goes to a black, vibrates and then the phone reboots normally (which is a relief). So, needless to say - I am stumped. Can you or anyone else offer any suggestions?

Happy to try but could you point me to how I get back to stock firmware and then reset the device? I thought I was still using stock firmware (rooted I understand) so I think you must mean that I need to unroot my phone some how, reboot and then use the rooting process you just posted before install Philz recovery. Would you mind describing a little more - I know I have taken up a lot of your time but greatly apprecriate your help,

U can download the stock firmware from ur device I9505 will be abt 1.4 gb
once downloaded extract in a folder then flash using Odin pda - need to select .tar here again as u did b4 for recovery flashng etc
This will flash a Firmware and u will have stock phone unrooted
from there reset the device from ur phone which will remoce all the bad files etc and all the data also from ur Internal phone memory
after that as told Root and install recovery hope fully this will work without issues

Okay, got all that. I am surprised that you can flash stock firmware back on to your phone as I was under the impression you needed a custom recovery installed before you could add a custom ROM. Is that purely a "safety" precaution and I could bite the bullet and install a custom ROM now (should I be silly enough to try)? I do have may SYSTEM, APPS and USER data back up. Obviously I will loose everything on my phone doing this but can I expect that I can restore the APPs and USER data from my existing backup but not attempt to do this will the system files in fear of recreating the current problem?

Yes u can flash stock with Odin no need to install recovery for that..Custom recovery is needed mostly to flash custom Roms more or less u can say
and this method is 100% safe as long as u do properly
make sure u have 60% plus battery on the phone dont disconnect while its running / installing
and dont re install backup u have taken b4 with system files etc myte create plm
rather use titanium / mybackup pro app just to backup messages/ apps etc and save it else where or SD card for later use

Hi, I have done as suggested and flashed the stock ROM and performed a hard Reset. I didn't expect the flashing of the ROM would leave all my apps and screens as they were. Is that normal? I did confirm that the baseband number had changed, which is has. I then moved on to install the root as suggested and all seems to have worked well with the red Android figure appearing. Unfortunately SuperSU is complaining of not having the necessary binary files and Root Checker doesn't seem to be able to determine whether I have rooted phone or not as it just sits there complaining that my system seem slow. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi, yes I tried SU from play store - same issue. I also reset from the Backup and Reset option on the phone which did delete all the apps etc so to the best of my knowledge, I followed all the steps as described by you and on the various pages you gave me links to.
I have just tried SuperUser. It noted the binaries were old but when it attempted to update, said it "failed" to gain root access. Despite getting the confirmatory Red Android after the root process, I now wonder if it didn't go entirely as planned despite trying 2-3 times....?

Okay, so I am getting ready to reflash back to stock , I have downloaded the deodexed and rooted MJ7 ( I also have the vanilla stock version as well ) rom - I also have the PIT file , Odin, Kingo, etc ( previously rooted with De La Vega ). The reason I am doing this is because I accidentally installed the Jelly Beans Rom over the stock partition in SS, and we all know about dirty flash...
I have some questions before I do this:
Do I need to unroot my device or uninstall safe strap or anything prior to re-flash?
There is a TWRP posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518704
"If using Twrp or Cwm flash this kernel its needed for dev editions: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291676094"
Do I need this if I am installing the Rooted MJ7?
Is it safe to load the rooted MJ7 as stock, or should I load the stock, root, safe strap and install it in a different slot?
I should assume that I will loose EVERYTHING that I haven't already backed up, correct?
I have done a lot of research and digging , but there is a lot of noise, assumptions and lingo that can be hard to parse through here on XDA, is the process as follows?
Boot device into Odin mode
Load the ROM and TWRP file into ODIN and flash
Root using Kingo
Do this thing with SU.zip which I don't quite understand , I purchased the full version of SU so is this still necessary or can I just re-download SU and use that version?
Install SS
Boot into SS , create a ROM slot , activate it, install ROM.
Then go back through and re-set up and re download everything
Thanks for reading any advice, help , etc would be great!
*Edit - it was the PIT file not TWRP , strike through to maintain relevance. It also appears I can only flash the deodexed stock rom into a rom slot or flash over stock maybe.
Just for documentation purposes , hopefully it helps a noob or two.
I just used Odin and re loaded the stock MJ7 - Restart was fine, have Android is upgrading screen and it is Optimizing apps.
I did NOT get the Safe Strap boot screen, nor did I get the Jelly Beans ROM splash screen, *HOWEVER* all apps and customizations appeared to stay - no data loss ( your results may vary, back up anyway before trying this! )
Root Checker Basic results - Sorry! This device does not have proper root access.
Kingo - Root successful
Xprivacy notifications showing up in notification bar
Root Checker Basic results - Success
Installed SS 3.65 ( current version as of 11/13 ), installed recovery, rebooted into recovery was a success.
Created ROM slot on slot 1 , installed HyperDrive
Installed Hyperdrive , cleared Dvalik and Cache
Rebooted, loaded into HD. All new "Stock" look.
Time to download Nova , Swiftkey, Zooper , UCCW , etc.
Hopefully this helps someone out there, or if I messed up then someone can enlighten me.
I have a SM-N900W8 canadian note 3. I just installed new DOC4 lollipop rom via odin. I did clean install by wiping data. I root with CF-Root and flash latest TWRP. Everything seems to work perfectly until i try to made some small mod to add datamobile button in quicksettings using this thread. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342370
After it boots up to a black screen and a pop up shows up for nearly all of my apps that says they are not responding so all I get is that and a black screen. I reflash the rom via odin without wiping my data, re-root and everything went back fine and my mod works. ???!! I now have my datamobile button.
Later, i made a nandroid backup with TWRP. After reboot i got the same errors.... So i Reflash-rom, re-root, everything back to normal.
TO make a short story, everytime i access recovery or flash something in recovery or modify my system partition i got this errors....
I suspect having partition mismatched ... i don't know...
Any idea ???
Any help appreciated...
Which version of TWRP did you use? As far as I know, the latest only supports up to kitkat (4.4)
Maybe this is what causes your problems?
That's what i thought, I'm using the latest one (2.8.6.0). I ask other users in another thread and they said this version is working flawlessly with lollipop...
I have the same phone, and I flashed lollipop DOC4 using Odin yesterday, with CF-auto-root and TWRP 2.8.6.0.
I just tried (litterally minutes ago) adding the data toggle, and it worked, but I could not reproduce your problem.
Which version of TWRP did you use? The hltecan one or the hltexx?

1. Are you sure you installed correct TWRP? The correct one for your device: HERE.
2. Seems that mod for datamobile button doesn't work for your device. Reflash rom, re-root and don't install that mod. Try that update firmware for some days and tell me how it works :highfive:
I used HLTECAN 2.8.6.0. When i was on 4.4.2 NB7, i was using the same file and i had not problems at all. If you re-read my first post, i said my data toggle is working fine now but i needed to re-flash the entire rom without wiping data to get rid of the many apps errors. I guess i need to reflash everything from scratch... Will use another USB wire and another USB port. Maybe it'll help... Or maybe i should try another root method ??? I used CF-Root for SM-n900w8...
I suggest trying with hltexx, since it is the version I used, and I encountered no problem at all so far.

your problem is that you didnt flash any recovery like CWM or philz and stock samsung recovery wont work in flashing roms so what you need to do is download the recovery from here http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www56.zippyshare.com/v/FVQRYLIe/file.html&h=3AQFLol3m and flash it via odin and be sure to root your phone again if you have flashed stock rom from odin after rooting flash this recovery and try to flash the rom again and hope so your problem will be solved if i helped you then dont forget to click the thanks button

- you should be on kitkat stock rom.. the recommended firmware is NH6 and NK1 base
- root your phone
- then install recovery like cwm 6.0.5.1 or philz 6.49.0. you can find it on grand 2 thread easily
- after that install S6 styled S5 port. before install. make sure youdo this :
1. wipe data, cache, and dalvik. wipe dalvik can be find in advanced option
2. format system and boot in mount and storage option
3. then flash the rom
4. then aroma installer should be begin. there 2 option here
- wipe external sd card : this will wipe all your external sd card
- no wipe
if you dont want your data in ext gone.. dont choose wipe ext sd card !
instead use no wipe
5. oh yeah after that flash deds kernel v2.0 in kernel section of grand 2 thread. if you already download it. just flash it..
the reason flash deds kernel because it will fix the wifi and xposed installer issue
- and its finished. just reboot your phone now.. wait 5 minute and yay..
if i help. please hit thanks button okay

hmm maybe you should do this
- flash stock rom nk1 again and root it again
- after root your phone, reboot .and you will see supersu app. open it.then you will see knox bootloader. choose disable bootloader. then now it update binary from supersu. choose normal .dont use twrp/cwm option. reboot again. and now download busybox in play store. after that install the busybox
- then flash recovery.. and then see the instruction of flashing rom in my previous post
note : dont flash deds kernel v2.3e... it will brick your phone... flash deds kernel v2.0
please tell me if it works or not
I opened superu after reboot by it is showing nth in hw to disable bootloader

knox can be find in supersu .. when you already root it.. it will usually appear knox option.
but i doesnt matter .. it will not affect your device... are you already install busybox?. if you already install then see my previous post to flash recovery then flash rom

an u guyz tell me step by step from root to Flashing ROM?
What rom ???
You really should learn the basics before flashing and bricking your phone .
Back up EFS folder first with EFS Pro .
Root rom.
Install CWM/ TRWP recovery.
Download custom rom place on ext sd card .
Boot to recovery factory restore wiping data .
From recovery install zip and locate your custom rom Install wait reboot wait .

because when i flash the ROM , it shown 'KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING, SET Warranty BIT : KERNEL'
i planning to get ROM 4.4.2 like HAWKISH ELITE/OMEGA ROM.
wat is diff between CWM and TRWP bro?
i installed CWM only, not for TRWP.
before i installed ROM from recovery, i did all wipe, not only wipe the data, dalvik also and another 1 i forgot. total of 3 wipes.
can u give me link for root, CWM/TWRP that compatible to my Device pls?
i get confused due to so many link.

What JJ is saying is that you need to know more before doing any of this. You want to upgrade and that's fine, but if you first get root then try to upgrade the chances are you're going to have problems. Better to upgrade first to the stock version you want and THEN do Custom Recovery, Root and flash the ROM you want.
BUT... and it is a big but... this is XDA Developers forum. You are asking questions that show not much understanding of what you are trying to do. So put aside your upgrade for now and go read and learn what you need to know.
If your phone is currently NOT working, then ask that instead. Tell us Model (which you did) What you tried and what the screen says. Once your phone is back working THEN go read and learn and ask when you have problems.
There is Search at top of page - use it to search 'How to root' and read the posts. Some are people also asking your questions and there are answers there. Some are tutorial threads where you can learn how to do what you are asking.
Good luck - it's a journey but a good one to walk along.
