Guys,
pretty much as the topic says...it drains about 40 to 50% a day when it is idle....if I am using it it can be anything up to a 1% a minute.
Any hints on where to look - tried using battlog to log the usage but i cannot open the subsequent file at all.

Wiggz,
Try checking if you're in a dead-zone with no reception? (Your phone may be constantly trying to search for a signal). Do this for Wi-Fi too. Make sure it is not constantly scanning for a network.
Similarly, open up your task manager. How many programs do you see running in the background? Remember that pressing X in Windows Mobile does not mean it closes the application, it only means that the application is minimized.
Cheers.
Wifi is hardly ever on. My signal is always constant, but I have my data connection on 24/7 for emails. The only program I ever see consume CPU power when idle is "changescreen". I always check that a program has closed properly when I click the 'x'.
I know data connection on eats some battery but jesus - not that much surely?

Wiggz,
The question remains, how many programs do you see when you open up the task-manager? You did not answer the question.
From what I've observed with my friend's Toshiba Portege, he lost 30% in an hour. He did not realize that he had 15-ish programs "idling" in the background with very little RAM use. Long story short: Turn everything off if you don't need it and just keep the Task Manager running. He now goes through the night with 1 ~ 2% loss.
Good day.

When I open up task manager I see 4 applications running (taskmgr, manila, cprog x2) - when I check the processes I have many more obviously. However these are all processes I'd expect to be running (gwes.exe, cprog.exe, device.exe, services.exe etc...)
Any more advice?

Wiggz,
Unfortunately, that's all from me (I dont even have this phone yet, I'm saving up for it in the next couple of weeks). Try turning off your data and see how it goes. But damn, 50% loss just on idling, something in the background is definitely killing the battery.
Cheers!
Thanks for the help anyway - annoying the crap out of me. My Artemis used to go for days without needing a charge...I suppose my battery could be screwed but I want to troubleshoot first before I bite the bullet on that one - suppose I could hard reset and see what the drain is?
Things idling in RAM should not have any significant hit on the battery life. However, having the data connection on 24/7 will indeed kill your battery life, especially if you're using 3g or higher (Edge drains alot aswell, but not as much as 3g and higher). Since emails seem important to you, I'm guessing you have it set to dl every 5min (which is the most frequent setting). If applicable, change it to 10 or 15; granted it's possible you do need to get your emails ASAP and you need the 5min frequency. Now regardless whether you changed the frequency of the auto dl or not, set your data connection to terminate after a 1min of not being used. This should help you get a good bit more out of your battery.
(I have emails dl every 30min and RSS feeds and push pages once an hour. Data enables itself when needed and then terminates after a minute of not being used. This allows me to get much more than a days usage out of the phone. The only way I kill the phone is if on top of all that, I listen to music/radio for about 6 hours)
Hope it helps
oh, and in case you don't know, HD Tweak is one way to terminate data after X amount of time of not being used.
do you have stock or cooked rom btw? duttys v3 xt, for example, is known to drain battery a lot.

Cheers for this. I have HD Tweak and have tried that data connection termination setting before, however there is a little comment along with it that it can stop data and/or voice calls. Has anyone had any issues with it?
Thanks
i had similar problem, battery got drained overnight or during the day with a speed of light... but in my case the bad boy was Palringo (IM) which was auto starting with every phone reset and did not show on taskbar...it is so bad that it drained fully charged battery in aprox. 6-7 hours. so now i hardly use it, and whenever i do i make sure its closed properly....

personally I have had no issues whatsoever. The voice calls that I'm guessing they're referring to is VOIP which uses your data plan to make the call as I don't see why it would interfere with normal calls. I think the easiest thing is just to give it a try, and if it doesn't work for you, then let us know and hopefully we'll be able to come up with a different solution.

Well the reason I mentioned it was that I enabled that as one of a number of weaks and ended up having to hard reset as I wasn't getting Texts in a timely manner etc....it was probably another setting but I couldn't be sure.
Will try again. Only other thing is that data connection on 24/7 is great for a quick browse here and there and stock updates etc...

why is that, by the way?
You haven't got Sprite Virtual Mobile installed have you? I tried it out on my HD and it sucked the life out of it for some strange reason. And it wasn't even showing up in task manager.
Is there a list of processes, services etc that we can safely remove/disable to work in the background? What say all?
glad this thread came up - my blackstone has been absolutely fine until I had the genius idea of "optimising" everything about 2 weeks ago with HD Tweak...
Now it's not HD Tweaks fault, but whatever I have changed means that it can drain a full charge overnight, and by morning its nigh on empty, i'm going to try and change it all back today, but for sure some setting I've changed is sucking juice like no-ones business.
FWIW - I havent installed anything during this time, the only thing i've changed is some of the settings - so it's not a "rogue" app draining the battery.
OT - sorry for the semi-hijack - I guess my point is that i'll have a play with the settings and see if I can determine what's eating the battery and then compare with other people.
that's fine (re: hijack) I think the two topics are closely connected.....not sure of the answer though

ta - me either - i've changed a few settings and made a note - will post if it doesnt eat the battery overnight over the next couple of days.
Personally have been experiencing HUGE challenges regarding battery life of JB. and i have searched and searched, complained and complained in many xda threads. But in the end, i think this method is the best I figured out and it works pretty well!
I discovered the main cause of battery drain on JB is the 'Media Scanner'. I dont know exactly what the issue is, but it DRAINS your battery! I thought it was a corrupt file in my phone that was causing Media scanner to get stuck and scan for loong periods instead of 2 - 3 minutes which it should take regularly. (btw media scanner is launched every time you restart your mobo or make changes to your media files as far as i know). I formatted both my Internal and External SDs but it still didnt help. Now use the following Steps below to solve these issues.
1. Download Media scanner ROOT.
This app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot&hl=en
2. Download Media scanner also
This one - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
3. Always set 'Power saving' option on phone on. I can assure you that you'll hardly notice the difference in performance when you turn on power saving.
Having said that, if you want more brightness, you can increase from toggle or just tick auto by the side of brightness level settings right there in your notification bar.
Also, if you need to game or use heavy app that require alot of system resources, just turn off power saving.(Because power saving slows down your processors Maximum state from 1200MHz or 1.2GHz to 800MHz.)
How to use the apps mentioned in numbers 1 and 2.
First one is to stop it (Media scanner) from ever scanning. So open that one with ROOT at the end of the name (Grant SU prompt), then hit disable media scanner button wait for it to work. Just one or two seconds.
Sometimes you might open your gallery and notice a file is missing or you might not see even a single picture or vid in it.
ONLY NOW! can you open the second app dat DOESN'T contain ROOT at the end of its name.
Just open it and then hit the back button to close. thats all!
What this does if to call the media scanner you disabled earlier with first app so it can scan your SD Cards and your gallery will display your files.
You can read the application descriptions on Play store for better understanding.
If you notice that these steps still doesn't help you with your battery drain issue, try disabling Motions and Animations in debugging options too. Both in settings. Then test battery again and see how good it works.
IMPORTANT: You also want to change PhilZ recovery Backup format from .dup to .tar as this might be the reason why Media scanner goes crazy. How to - Reboot into recovery, select Backup and restore, then select 'Choose backup format', then hit tar. Now delete all previous backups done in .dup format and then hit 'Free Unused backup Data' or go into phone, delete the folders of the backups done in .dup and then delete evreything in blobs folder. Now do a fresh Nandroid which will now be in .tar format. ( Always Have a Nandroid backup on your phone , it can come in handy! )
REMEMBER: What works for one person, might not exactly work for everyone. We don't have 100% same hardware. . So take it easy while throwing your shots at me. I just decided to share this.
I hope this helps some solve their battery issue.
Please hit thanks if this helps you.
Attached screenshots of my test from steps in first post.
ROM! is The SWEET SMOOTH NEAT ROM LITE v4.0
Here are the details of the screenshots i attached to this post, just incase you can't go through all of them.

Had major whatsapp activity in the backgroud (I always have )
3. Battery at 70% - 12:59pm
Screen time - 2h 4m 10s
4. Battery at 50% - 2:30pm
Screen time - 3h 17m 38s
5. Battery at 40% - 3:06pm
Screen time - 3h 53m 12s
6. Battery at 30% - 3:48pm
Screen time - 4h 33m 27s
7. Battery at 20% - 4:27pm
Screen time - 5h 12m 20s
8. Battery at 10% - 5:03pm
Screen time - 5h 48m 21s
9. Battery at 1% - 5:31pm
Screen time - 6h 15m 19s
Also to achieve this, i had all bloatware frozen (full list in my S2 Facebook group - Link in my signature)
Turned Off Sync, and motion (really dont know if this affected result since i guess you need to use the motion,
for it to use up your battery).
Anyways, having said all these, i had running in background, facebook messenger, whatsapp, email pushing hourly,
Instagram. Did some surfing using Opera mini from time to time, Watched Videos... and some other stuff i cant remember of course.
The fact that Power Saving does not slow down the phone like older builds is strange.
I don't even know if it works that well yet.
I mean, I used Power Saving on my friends S3 and the phone got really slow.

Its normal for your mobile to get hot using 3G. But wat you can do right now is use lowest brightness possible. And flashing a different modem can solve. Did in ICS.

Yup, when i first tried my friend S3 i was amazed at how slow it got if you turned on this option, doesn't happen in s2 JB which is strange, however i will try this 3 things to see if battery life does increase.

I don't know why you guys have this media scanner problem. My battery life with LSJ (NeatROM Lite) is the best I have ever seen on SGS2, (best screen-on time + call time, and it sleeps like a baby) and media scanner isn't showing in BBS, at least not frequently. Maybe you all are using .dup format for CWM backups? It's the default on Philz kernel (at least it was), but I changed that in recovery options to .tar.

Is it possible to use voltage control app to limit max processor signal to 800mhz, and save more battery?
Not sure what people are complaining about?
I've stripped alot, and i mean alot of APK's from the system folder. Had around 6 hours screen time, and around 1 day 3 hours uptime on first cycle.
No wakelocks, nothing. Best ROM i've used in a long time!
After disabling media scanner my music player and video player doesnt show any files.. and the ringtones are set to default samsung tones instead of what i hav set..
any solution for that ???/

+1. What is the most important thing - disable Google Now, change dup to tar, delete backups created in dup (they are causing media scanners to go wild), disable motion, disable smart stay and that's it, more or less.

S4 - Battery drain - Google and Others
Hi. (I'm only sharing my experience with the intention to hopefully help some user's).
Here is what I did. It seems to be fixed.
Here it is:
1- I went to = Settings > Application Manager
2- I tried to find anything related to Google. (Like: Chrome, Drive, Earth, Google Account Manager, Google Backup Transport, Any thing that has a Google on the name. etc... etc.... plus Hangouts, Maps, Picasa. (The apps you'll find will depend on each user). Do a clear data on everyone, plus click uninstall. Click yes or ok if any questions pop up.
3- Besides Google, find one named Downloads and anything with Market. Do a Clear Data. Uninstall anything if there's the option.
4- Don't worry about uninstalling, ahead you will install everything back again.
5- After all this, remove your Google Account. (Sync before removing as you want)
6- Hold power button and Restart it.
7- Now, create your Google Account back again. Check every option about notifications and syncing stuff, and set it as you wish.
8- Open Play Store. Update everything.
9- Hold power button and Restart it.
10- Now, check every option about notifications and syncing stuff on each of the apps updated and or installed. Set it as you wish.
11- Do the same above about ANY other app you have installed. Some apps don't have many setting's options, but many do, and those some use to create Log's, or connects every once in a while to the internet. It's a pain in the ass work, but I did it.
12- Hold power button and Restart it.
Finish!
About the heating process, like inside the pocket, is most probably because something is trying to find a way to connect, like GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. Make the right configs for your needs on each and avoid this.
Like the app in the picture attached, "android sensor box". Only 10min on background, and got 5%.
Every once in a while the heat will occur, ans its normal when on use of anything.
Ps:
1- I my be mistaking, but I guess after doing all this, some Google Apps, are a bit different. Google Latitude is gone, and this use to drain a lot of battery.
2- Make sure about what you leave on for Syncing or for Logging, or Registering data like temperature or any other kind of app. There are many doing stuff on the background.
3- Even whit the GPS always on, it is really used only if there's an app trying to use it. That's one of the arguments I have for checking all setting from pretty much every app you have.
4- Check your auto start apps.
Hope it help.

Having Lag & Heat Issues???
Is anyone having lag issue or any heat issues? I guess I have one of the problem notes as mine has extreme lag and heat problems. I have cleared all caches and have also factory reset several times. What's weird is that the lag will come and go, but it's there more often than not. Even scrolling in settings has the jitters.
Any ideas anyone. I might be better off going through the miserable process of exchanging through the mail.
Thanks in advance for any help!
You'll have to boot to safe mode to see if the issue persists. Also, make sure power saving mode isn't on (I've left it on before).

I'm experiencing the same issues - overheating, slowing down, serious lag. It's simply terrible. I exchanged it and the new one is just as bad and maybe even worse.

welcome to samsung
I have none of these problems and i am a heavy user

My guess is it has to do with one or multiple of the apps you have installed. There is a 3 step process to fix this issue.
#1 - See if any of the apps you have installed are running rouge. Check, battery usage, RAM usage, and Data Usage to see if you have any bad apps. Uninstall any 3rd party apps that you installed that are running too much. They may just still need updated to be optimized for this new device. Also you can use the "sleep" (doze) feature in battery management to restrict apps that are running TOO much in the background. Also on any apps that are using too much data or RAM check the permissions. If an app does not need access to Data, Media etc to work properly turn off those permissions.
#2 Debloat the device. I like "Package Disabler Pro". Basically if it has Facebook, FB, or ATT in the name you should disable it. Also you can go through an disable any Samsung software you do not use as well. I would be careful about using the "disable all bloatware" button because it is not setup correctly for this new device yet.
#3 Give it some time. It you have a TON of media on a micro EXSD card then it can take a new phone a long time to index and create thumbnails for all of that information. It should speed up i about a day or so once it finishes indexing. this will also effect your battery life till it is completed.

Yeah it will break Samsung Pay though... I think it's related to the UIBCVirtualSiftkey app, but have not confirmed that. Also it does not get nearly all of the bloatware. There is a ton of new AT&T junk it does not disable as well as a bunch of new Facebook crap and Samsung crap.

Definitely. It gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the scroll capture. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I have disabled so far without any issues. Once I get a full completed list I'll probably do a write up about how to clean up the dock ROM. I think I'm about 70% done with the list.
So far I'm getting about 6.5 hrs of SOT and about 28 his of usage.

I am not positive but I think it's the UIBCVirtualSoftkey if the doesn't fix it. Just enable all of the stuff you disabled and reboot. Then only disable what's on my list. I can confirm is working with my setup.
I'm exchanging mine tomorrow and was hoping for better news but from your experience it sounds like I may have to deal with an expensive piece of crap.

This phone lags a lot especially in Chrome and other scrolling apps.. sometimes switching between apps takes lot of time too...I have been using Samsung phones for quite sometime, but unfortunately this is the phone lagging more than any other phone for me..debloated almost 150 apps, still the same..and it gets hot as well when watching videos...none of this happened for me on Note 5...I think Samsung screwed with Note7 software..when they initially released Grace UX software for Note 5, it was very smooth...but the final Note7 software seems to be laggy...the same apps and setup on Note5 doesn't give me these issues....gonna return and try my luck with new one...but good thing is battery life has been very good for me...easily 5hrs SOT whereas on Note5, I used to get only 3.5 hrs

I am exactly facing this issue..I am a heavy XDA user, so I monitor all the apps on phone and debloated lot (around 150) apps...still the same.. thing is lag doesn't happen all the times..but it starts from no where..but the phone consistently gets hot while moderate usage

When the phone is working properly, bloatware should make no noticeable difference and debloating is unnecessary.
My Note 7 usually responds instantly, with no lag, no matter how heavily I'm using it. That's with nothing disabled or debloated. (I'm using the Google Now launcher but everything else is stock/default, with no esoteric apps or settings.)
However, on three occasions in the week I've had the phone, it's gotten into a mode with serious lag while typing. In this mode, even though the characters I type still show up on the screen instantly, I can type 3 or 4 characters with no sound feedback or vibration feedback; then, there will be 3 or 4 delayed clicks and vibrations in rapid succession.
When this serious-lag mode starts, it continues even if I close all apps and put the phone in Airplane mode. It also makes no difference if I turn on power-saving mode, or even maximum power-saving. The only thing I've found that fixes it (for a while) is rebooting.
The intermittent occurrence of the serious-lag problem shows that it's not a matter of the phone being underpowered or overloaded. There's some specific bug that needs to be fixed.
UPDATE: It just happened for a fourth time. And when the serious-lag mode starts, it's not just typing that has a delay with audio feedback. The feedback delay also occurs when I tap on icons, tap on the Back or Recent-apps soft-buttons, etc. There's a delay of up to a second or two between tapping and hearing the feedback.
On the other hand, compute-intensive tasks--such as playing streaming video--work properly even when the phone is in serious-lag mode. So that's further evidence that there is some specific bug, and not a general problem of being underpowered or overloaded.

Curious, do these typing lags occur on the hangouts app?!?! It seems to be the ONLY app on my Note 5 (and all the other phones I've used) that has a VERY NOTICEABLE KEYBOARD LAG, especially with Samsung Stock keyboard. This happens even with other keyboards, but is WORST with samsung keyboard.....

No, the problem I'm seeing is unrelated to any app or keyboard. When my phone is in serious-lag mode, the problem occurs across the board. When it's not in lag-mode (which it usually isn't), then there's no lag in any app, including Hangouts.

Hmmm.....interesting....I use the app os monitor to show which processes are running at high cpu %. Perhaps that can shed some light on your lag issue?

It happens even with all apps closed, no heat, no battery drain. It's not a side-effect of the phone being bogged down with anything.
