Hi Guys,
Thought you should know;
I've tried a couple of camera's in the last few days and i've come up with a top 5;
1. HTC M9 Camera (Full HD ois video, Laser focus, a lot of extra's, very fast, 13mp -> good quality in low light)
2. Lenovo Camera (Lot's of options too, somehow i didn't like the blurry preview, and the overall orange-ish results)
3. Motorola Camera (More options then CM camera, while maintaining the same (good) quality. Big downside for me was the "zoomed in" pictures, and a little less low light performance)
4. Camera FV-5 (Don't need explanation, lots of options, AOSP camera quality)
5. CM Camera (If you're satisfied with AOSP camera quality and don't need all the extra's, the built in CM camera is your guy)
I'm not putting in any links.
Just Google for the camera's above. And let me know your findings.

Does the HTC M9 Camera gives good results? (Compared stock lollipop performance).
The camera is actually the only thing keeping me away from AOSP (along with no smart cover UI).

It does!!! I was about to post various pictures for comparison, but then i wiped my device and lost them all.
Camera was indeed the only thing for me to keep stock fw, but now i'm very happy with my CM12 - HTC M9 combination.
Just like me, you can backup your current rom and try my combination.
If it doesn't suits you, you can always fall back to your backup

true Another reason to make me use CM12 I'll try that combi!
I can confirm. HTC M9 port from Jishnu Sur (search him on g+ because none of his works is allowed here in xda...) it's the best camera for aosp roms. I tried all the cameras listed above but I ended up to use g2 camera port because of the quality of the pictures, but some day ago Jushnu Sur released his port of the M9 camera and I think it's absolutely the best. I can vouch for HTC M9 port mod. It. is. Nails! The closest thing you will get to the G3 stock camera, but with more options. Previously the reason I hadn't switched to a AOSP rom was due to camera quality.
Ok, looks like you guys have not tried ALL cameras.
The only camera with stock like quality in low light is the LG G2 port. This HTC M9 one is not anywhere near that.
You should try it and see with your own eyes

Installed a few cameras on cm12; The M9 port is definitely the closest to the stock. Works great.

Do any of the mentioned cameras provide for a single touch shot like the stock app? I've gotten spoiled by that function.

I tested the same picture, with the same light and it had the exact same quality. I took a pic with stock, flashed to CM12 and took a pic with this ported camera just minutes after.
There was no difference, whatsoever. How did you performed your test to notice any differences?

Maybe you previously installed something that messed up the configurations used by the camera, because i can guarantee the pictures are exactly like stock. And i do not conform with mediocre results, look at this picture, this is the results i get, far away from abysmal...

That indeed is a very reasonable result!
Tried the app again. Unfortunately (still) the screwed up UI. Using a 13mp resolution is almost impossible. Will try to find an acceptable rom/app dpi combination.
Now, when using 532dpi (stock RR), only 10mp is doable (tried stock and 560dpi app versions so far). The 13mp preview is very much warped. Too much so, alas.
G2 port is best
i try lenovo v6 and htc M9 cam from jinur
i think g2 is best quality

Hey guys, I've got a quick question according the camera on AOSP ROMs. Is there any way of recording a 4K or slow motion video on an AOSP ROM? I did try a few cameras before when I had cm12, but I did not find those features in any of the camera apps I've tested.
So if this is possible, then what camera app would I have to use?
luizffgarcia this photo look great , i have to try that camera app

I remember getting my nexus 4 for the first time. I wasn't totally happy with the camera but I thought it was ok. It's the best thing I could get for the price. But after the 4.3 update, the quality is now comparable to cheap android phones. I now rely heavily on HDR apps but we all know they somehow distort the image.
So here's a sample I took using the stock camera app. Take note that I shot it outdoors so there should be no problems with the light. When my phone was still in 4.2, outdoor shots were usually ok using the stock camera in auto (no HDR). The photo below just looks washed out and horrible.

And here's the same scene but using camera 360. Image is slightly improved but still horrible (too much glare, I guess?)
Any idea how to solve this issue? I am so embarrassed with my phone, I refuse to take pictures from it now, haha!
with 4.3 i am in the same boat. Pictures are washed out compared to 4.2. I dont feel embarrassed but I think Google needs to work on the Camera app.
I recommend using a third party app.
I might decide to install a different ROM and see if the quality improves. It's a little time consuming though (need to backup everything, etc).

I did'nt notice any real change from 4.2.2 to 4.3 but still the camera is not perfect at all.
Did you try the scene modes ?
HDR could be a good way to improve fr this kind of picture but I'm sure you tried it also.
I never used the scene modes even on 4.2.2 but I'm usually able to take awesome photos using HDR before. I'm pretty sure the quality degraded this time.

how come light isn't enough outdoors? also I do clean my phone every once in a while.
Anyway, were those photos taken with android 4.3? I was able to take nice macros before when my phone was still 4.2. Check out the samples below. These were all taken early this year (january to february) using the stock camera's HDR mode.
Needless to say, I was quite happy with my phone before the updates

by the looks of your photos in the op, there wasva lot of moisture in the air. that tends to block light. btw, did you just point and shoot, or did you focus on something first? as just a point and shoot, the camera isnt that good, but if you go and focus on something first the camera takes better photos. try adjusting the setting per shot, raise exposure +1 if in doubt about the light. also, for close up shots, ill use the flash with a -1 exposure in direct sunlight. btw, mine photis posted were with android 4.3, from this week.
Focal camera
Try using Focal camera by the CM team....its quite useful....helped me out too....its available for free on the play store....

hhmm.. I'm still not convinced simply because I haven't been able to take good photos ever since the updates. I used to be contented with the stock camera app's HDR mode. Now even camera 360 takes bad, grainy photos. I just noticed that photos after the update were usually washed out. I do remember that the camera was pretty unstable during 4.2, sometimes it would crash and I would have to reboot to make it work again.
I think I just point and shoot, but doesn't the camera autofocus when it detects movements? I usually wait a second or two for the camera to focus before i press the shutter button. Anyway, thanks for the tips about the exposure. Yes, I usually don't change those settings.
I seen the old Moto camera posted before but not the new one. This is the stock Motorola Camera+ from the MotoX with Gallery. This is based of 5.X.X so it should work across most lollipop builds. I have tested this on stock and AOSP ROM's.

If you want the additional options (settings) to work you must change you're build.prop on the line that says "release-keys" to "tests keys". I will upload the build.prop also, I stripped out the OEM specific junk also. The exact line in the build prop to change is :
ro.build.tags=release-keys (original)
to
ro.build.tags=test-keys (changed)
Of course all the same rules apply. Myself or XDA are NOT responsible for the lack of common sense or stupidity, resulting in bootloops or non functional devices.

I actually have the new HTC camera on my N6 right now and I still think this camera gives better images. I went to a instant print machine the other day. I was really impressed of the quality of the pictures when printed.
Both the HTC and the Motorola are missing HDR options. The Motorola Camera has less functionality than the HTC camera, specifically I need to be able to set focus while 4K video recording.
The burst mode is very good on this one. Overall I think ALL camera apps are missing one thing or another, which I think is very frustrating.
LCamera is outdated, has no HDR and latest dev build has issues.
F5-V is slow & buggy atm and I don't like the UI, 4K video is broken, no HDR.
Manual Camera has great UI & Control but no video recording & HDR ?!!!!
Motorola has ****ty UI, but feels polished. Burst mode works great, but no HDR. No focus control while recording video.
HTC Camera has a ****ty UI and no HDR. (But is the best one overall with focus control during 4K Video recording)
Google Camera is a joke but is the only one with working HDR.
Pick your poison.
I would love a fully functioning ColorOS camera port.
Any advice ?
Um, I can look into porting it over. It might just work if you strip the apk out of the ROM.

Maybe you can contact the guy/girl behind that port and work something out.
I've gotten to the point where I would pay for a decent camera app for the nexus 6.
I just downloaded it. If I have time I will work on it tonight. If not ,after memorial day I will get it done. I will also put it on my github so others can use it.
Just a quick update for anyone following this thread. I gathered up some source stuff and will be starting to dive into the ColorOS camera port along side a few others.

Lol I got sidetracked with developer preview. However, I do have the ColorOS camera running on the N6, but it won't take a picture when you press the button or force closes. I pinned it down to some kernel tweaks that need to be made. So no ETA's but I'm getting there.

Hi there,
So according to Sony the new camera is suppose to be something out of this world. but due to the horrible performance. I had my iphone 4's photos side by side with my z3c and I couldn't tell the difference for most. Therefore, I am very skeptical about what the new camera actually offers.
Another major issue for me was the flash on the phone. Since my first phone with a flash I found it very useful to have as a flash light. the Z3c however was a major disappointment in that area as my old iphone 4 outperforms it by far.
So what I'd like to see is a few photos from the z5c (night time aswell with flash).
Also, I'd like to hear your opinions regarding the new camera/flash and how well they performs

Dude, did you even search on google? Lots of samples pictures there. And yes its much better because the z3c camera is pretty ****.
But if you llke at them samsung note 5 pictures it will crap on the new Z5 phone.... just look at the samples http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4523/4953454/1/rv/sony-xperia-z5-compact-review/
Look at these camera samples:
http://www.xataka.com/analisis/sony-xperia-z5-compact-analisis
in my opinion it looks so good. I think eprice had a pre-production model or something like this.
The images are so noisy, I wish someone did a one inch sensor, my 808 still takes way better pictures than all of these.

If I compare a zoomed photo between the Z5 and the LG G4 or Samsung S6, I can see a poor quality coming from the Z5.
For instance, I'm talking about the 2nd sample from this link. Go to the chart called "Xperia Z5 vs Z3 vs 6 Plus vs S6 vs G4 indoor camera samples", then find the 2nd group of pictures. Double click on the candle with the label that says "REWINED" (in order to zoom the photo) and compare the quality between the Z5 and the G4/S6.

It looks very good, but there is blurring on the top left of every photo (top right in portrait) probably because of misaligned lens. Sony needs to fix their QC problems.
Everything else looks fantastic.

Thanks for that info!
The "Stock Camera" seems to be a bit better than the "Google camera".
However both cameras are nice for me.
There is one thing with the Google camera that i don't understand. The "Size".
If you compare the first sample, there is a big difference in the size (969KB vs 2,67MB).
P.S.: Did you try "HDR" (if available) in the Google Camera?

I just bought the Lenovo Z1
The phone is perfect for my needs, but I'm not so happy with the camera.
I find the images not crisp enough, like if they were interpolated.
Anyone knows if there is a way to turn off interpolation?
Here is a sample.

Thanks in advance
Do you have HDR enabled?
Swipe up and down in the camera app to change the mode and report back!
(the UX/UI of the camera app really makes no sense...no sense...).

Would be great if someone who knows about this stuff could recommend a better camera app than the default one.
I dont like the layout and the picture quality.
I prefer CameraZOOM.

This has been the biggest thing stopping me from ordering one. On paper, the camera should be pretty damned good. Reviews have been extremely mixed, but it seems that reviewers only use the CM camera app, which has always been somewhere between 'meh' and terrible.
How does this phone do with the Google camera or F-V5, or any of the other common third party apps. One would think that since the Z1 is one of the only lower priced phones with OIS, someone would actually care about the camera beyond CMs crappy software.
How do you see the quality of the camera in general?

As I said, I see the pictures not enough crispy and interpollated looking.
I also missed the Ice Cream Sandwich camera look.
I tried this camera.

This is the free version, there is another one without ads.

I made this comparison with the same picture, same time and both cameras.
I find the ICS camera one much more crispier, so I bought the pro version.
Here is the picture.

I'll try to make more tests in worst light conditions.

Is the camera really so bad? I don't mind a phone with a decent camera, but if it's so bad it's a deal breaker for me.

Well it's relative as my friend Einstein says!
Comparing it to my note 4, this camera is really weak!
Comparing it to my old nexus 4 it's fine!
It performs currently like an old 8mpx camera! I'm sure it can be improved with software!
You get what you pay for. As the guy above says it's relative. For the money it's super. A better camera app helps alot. Open Camera is good
this is one of the reason also that im not buying yet this device because of the camera quality though im not a selfie or camera guy. but im still considering a phone with good camera. hope Cyanogen improves the camera performance on this device.
I don't have any problem with camera it's ok not really good, If you are using Cynogen camera 10 i believe you will get much better clarity for the pictures...
That's true CameraNext Mod doing the job better quality but still not as we all want.

It's not bad. To have a reference, it's very similar to the OnePlus One.

Alex from Exodus says he may be able to implement 4k recording as the hardware supports it, but he hasn't got enough donations to buy the device.

Hey XZP owners is there any 3rd party camera apps which supports 19 mp full resolution setting. I already tried fv-5 and better camera but showing only 8 mp maximum resolution.
Open Camera is pretty much the best camera app in the store imo.

Someone posted that antuutu benchmark program says the rear camera is only 8.3MP. Maybe not an error after all. Can somebody download phone info and let us know that has the phone. I'll wont be getting my girlfriend's phone until after July 3rd

You mean this one
Sent from my G8141 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
It's only 8.3 MP if you use 3rd party software. Reason is Sonys pathetic, no self-esteem move to LIMIT the API-2 interface to 8.3 in case 3rd party apps are being used.
Just so you understand this: You paid for a phone and Sony LITERALLY FREAKING TELLS YOU what software to use with it. They actually block it. And the best part of it, they don't even get their own freakin software straight.
I was so looking forward to this phone, seriously. Now I'm going to sell it, hope some dude pays ~650 $ and get me an S8 or HTC. Never ever ever again Sony. This is so so so ridiculous.
Return it and stop complaining.
Now Camera MX showing 19 mp full resolution. Enjoy.

Nothing to enjoy here. Camera MX does not offer Camera API-2 support and hence can't make use of manual exposure or ISO settings. It's not about using "some" 3rd party app but making use of the cameras potential.
What about open camera from gp

Turn it on and see for yourself if you don't believe me.
Only 8 MP when using API2 and 1/10sec exposure time. Sony blocks it.
try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riseupgames.proshot2
Open camera and camera zoom allow 19.2 selection.
Also in FV5 force the legacy driver and 19.2 is available.

Interesting discussion...
Since I previously bought just about all camera apps in the past 4-5 years I confirm that the paid versions on Camera Zoom FX and Vignette both support full features. Again, these are the premium versions which do unlock extra features
Experia xz camera
An 19Mpixel camera only has 50% green 25% blou and 25%red pixels so 8,2Mpixels is not bad åt all!

But is there any difference in image quality between those apps and the stock app? I've tried AOSP with the Google Camera and that is so much better than stock. There isn't really any difference between open camera and the xz2 camera app
Open Camera crop
XZ2 Camera crop

Only if you have flashed AOSP (well maybe it works on stock but then there is no difference in image quality). The images are much sharper, have more detail and in low light they are a bit brighter. HOWEVER, you lose the noise reduction so there is a lot of noise in the images. You can correct this with an app like lightroom, but thats a lot of work if you just want to take a quick photo of something.
I've made some test photo's with AOSP and google camera a while ago. It was a lot darker when I took the bicycle photo's than the images suggest, but zoom in and you see the amount of detail (and noise) it has.
