I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900V) that is stuck in a boot loop. I get "RECOVERY BOOTING" in blue at the top left corner of the screen. No combination of power, volume up, volume down, or home buttons have any effect. I've tried all combinations. I have to pull the battery to get it out of the boot loop. Any advice?

Were you running Safestrap and a custom ROM... or were you totally stock before the phone started bootlooping and did you try to flash anything through Odin or Safestrap before it started? What build version is your phone on (4.4.2, 4.4.4, etc...)? Can you still get into Odin mode?
If you could provide some information, it should help others to give you some suggestions.
If you were rooted and had Safestrap installed, then this thread might provide some useful information to help you get the phone out of the bootloop. If your situation is similar to the others in the linked thread and you think that flashing the NC2 Kernel might get you out of the bootloop... then you should be able to grab the NC2 kernel from Beanstown106’s thread here.
You should also check out Droidstyle's restore guide here, which should help you restore the phone back to factory stock if necessary.

Hey thanks for the help. I was running Safestrap and the leaked KitKat 4.4.2. There's not much more to say other than in my first post. It just kind of randomly starting happening. All recovery options are failing because I can't get any combination of button presses to register when it's first booting up. This means I can't get into odin mode, bootloader, recovery... anything.

If holding the volume down + home + power buttons all together doesn't work any more to boot the phone into download mode, then it might be worth trying a usb jig to see if it would force the phone into download mode. Here's a listing for a usb jig on eBay that is less than $5 and the seller seems to have good feedback. The listing says it should work on a Note 3. If you'd rather make your own usb jig, there are several guides on YouTube and xda on how to make one.
Before trying the jig... here's an idea to get the phone into download mode...(it probably won't work, but shouldn't hurt anything to try)-- Take the battery out of the phone, then with the micro usb cable plugged into the phone, hold the volume down button on the phone and plug the other end of usb cable into the computer. Hopefully that will turn the phone screen on and prompt you to hit the volume up button to enter download mode.
If you can't get into download mode, then you might see if the Verizon Repair Assistant or Kies Emergency Firmware Recovery would work to restore the phone while in bootloop. I read someone else's post where they said that when using the Repair Assistant, they accidentally updated their phone to 4.4.4, so you'll probably want to research that more before using it so you don't lose ability to root.
If none of these things work, then I can't think of any other ideas other than sending it to someone for jtag repair. Maybe someone else can chime in with some other suggestions.
@Toaplan,
If you haven't been able to fix your phone yet, I was thinking you may also want to check this unbrick thread: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54534374 ). Per info in the thread... it sounds like jtag isn't an option for our version of the note 3, so please disregard my above comment about jtag.

Hey mattnmag,
Thanks for all the suggestions! This phone isn't my daily driver and I haven't been able to try any of this yet. I'll let you know how I make out when I get a chance to try some of this out. Thanks!

I just got a new Samsung Vibrant last week, and the person at the store offered to root it so we could use the wifi hotspot feature. The problem is the rooted phone wouldn't update from Android 2.1 to 2.2 through Kies Mini, so I tried updating the OS through Odin following instructions I found online.
I didn't follow them exactly it seems because I neglected to enable USB Debugging on the phone. The phone is now stuck in the Android system recovery 3e screen. Only the volume buttons (up/down) work, I can't actually select any of the options on the recovery screen. The error message at the bottom reads "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (Invalid argument)", etc.
From research I've done in the last few days it seems like to fix this I need to use Odin to 'reflash the phone back to stock' or something. Here is my problem:
1) I cannot get into Download Mode with physical buttons through any means. I've tried every suggest combination of buttons that I've seen and none have worked. At most I've managed to get into a new screen that says "Power reset or unknown mode" or something like that.
2) I cannot get into Download Mode through ADB because USB Debugging was never enabled in the first place, and cannot be enabled now that the phone is bricked
From what I've read it seems it's still technically possible to revive the phone... I just don't know how to do it.

try this:
Take out battery and put it back in (to make sure phone is off)
Insert USB to PC but remove Usb from phone and open Odin
While holding both volume bittons...insert USB into phone
Phone should go into download mode
If that doesn't work then you might need a jig

Stuck in recovery mode
hi i just installed frooyo 2.2 on my vibrant through Odin am stuck on recovery mode 3e...my phone can't reboot neither can it go on download mode.
Its giving me an error saying, E:can't mount/dev/blockmmcbblk0p1(Invalid argument) ...another message is:your storage not prepared yet.please use UI menu for format n reboot actions. Please help.........
Here is what i used with odin:
PIT :“s1_odin_20100512.pit”
PDA: I9000XXJP2-REV03-PDA-CL464213.tar
PHONE: MODEM_I9000XXJP2.tar
CSC:GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJP2.tar
I had one that was stuck in an infinite boot loop and wouldn't respond to physical keys. Build a JIG. It works. I have one and it's the best $6 I've ever spent. Took me 2 minutes to make on a breadboard.

Thank me if this helps.
Or you could ship me your phone
But I recommend building one.

Try turning the power off on your phone, plug the usb cable in and you will see the battery icon pop up. After that use all three buttons ( power and vol. up and down) until you see the screen go off like its going to reset. As soon as you see this, release the power button but leave the vol buttons held and it should go into download mode. This way has worked for me every time when all the other methods have not. If this still doesn't work, you might invest in a jig like others have suggested. I had the same error message a while back because like an idiot I tried to flash just a kernel and forgot to uncheck the repartition. Make sure you have the right pit. and the right pda (this should include the modem, rfs, kernel) and leave the repartition checked. Sometimes its hard to get into download mode but keep trying. Hope this helps and it wouldn't hurt to try and redownload the pda because the one you have might be bad. Good luck
Stuck in recovery mode
hey,metroidnemesis13
that procedure still takes me to recovery mode<3e>.
Any idea what to do next?
im jamed like this to..my side button does not work to ok only power..
how to you get out of this?
Why did he root it for wifi hotspot? 2.2 has mobile AP function for free? very odd.
man, I have said it too many times, the people in the store are idiots. I have had two if them call me to fix soft bricked phones, and one of them call me for help fixing a broken screen.
Learning how to do things, and how to undo things is key.
You should be able to get into download mode, either using the insert battery while plugged in and holding volume buttons, or using a jig. The jigs are cheap and make fun keychains.
@Mr Jeff who flashed a I9k (jp2) ROM with Odin, you most likely changed your bootloader. You may need to hold one of your soft keys (I don't know which) The key combo is different for the i9k

Eugene's Froyo That Does Not Brick
Download this first, and flash through Odin with your standard 512 pit file
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=8
Then when it reboots to the recovery screen, pull your battery, reinsert it and boot up to dl mode, and flash the following, with your same pit file, and selecting repartition in Odin this second flash only:
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=3
The first link there is Eugene's Froyo That Does Not Brick, but it doesnt work that well as a driver. As an eraser its great though! The second link is the Froyo JK2 leak, with fixed recovery and already rooted. If the first one didnt, the second flash will definitely put you back on Froyo bootloaders.
Thats my whole secret to keeping a clean phone and wiping out any ghosts. You can proceed from there in your desired direction (back to ZD or GZ preferrably) in a safe manner. Its always worked for me to clear up any oddness, and literally takes 15 minutes tops once you have the files downloaded.

Just play with the button combos.....
Take battery out.. Re-insert then try volume down while plugging in usb. Then same technique with battery try volume up.
I'm not sure the softkeys are even active when booting from bootloader but it's worth a try to hold home+either volume button+power.... or either volume button and home while plugging in the usb....
A jig is your best alternative at this point... If these don't work.
Possible Solution.....
Please Check this link it helped me from the same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277056
Download the Heimdall One-Click from option 3 and run it while your phone is connected in Download Mode..... Thats it enjoy(No need for all the steps shown in video)
Thanks it work. Just had to download files. 2.press up volume button and power button to go into download mode. 3. Open up odin toolkit using your windows cpu. 4. Unzip the samsung eugene. 5 .OPEN using odin, open 2 files PIT 512 n PDA FILE. 6. Press start success unbrick thanks

I have a phone I am fixing for a friend, so I don't have a complete accurate history of what happened, so please bare with me.
Basically, you put the battery in and it boots right to download mode (Factory Mode), no power button required. I can then reboot it using the power, hold down the Vol-Down button and then I am prompted if I want to enter D/L mode, in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal.
I have tried the following, nothing fixes it!
Factory Wipe
Root using CF-Auto Root
Every Key Combination Possible on Boot
Odin Stock Install
Kies Upgrade (just stalls on that)
It was not rooted when I got it, and now it is. I haven't installed any recovery yet, but am willing too. It has possible water damage, so it ain't going back to the store anytime soon. I can't even get USB Debugging to appear that it is connected, nor will ADB recognize it. But the USB is working and read/writing.
This isn't my first time working with this sort of stuff, I am just at my wits end, plus I'm a Sony/HTC/LG person, so if there is something I am missing with this wonderful(ly crappy) bootloader, let me know.
Thanks in advance!

If you can hold the vol-down and home button when you boot it up and get into Odin mode you should be about to flash the stock MD5 for your phone. Stock Canadian Odin files here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269304
Also make sure to use the lastest version of Odin, 3.07 I believe. After you are done flashing with Odin you will have to boot into Recovery (vol-up when booting) and do a factory reset. This has always fixed any boot problems with my phone.

So did you go into settings, more, developer mode to check usb/debug?
USB debugging isn't required to flash the Odin MD5. One thing I did notice is that you should boot into Odin download mode before connecting your USB cable. I was having issues with Odin not detecting my phone and waiting to connect the USB cable solved that.

I was referring going to adb fastboot
see the thing is that flashing did work fine, it just didn't fix the problem. I guess in Samsung terms I am stuck in Odin download mode when turning the phone on. This is why I wanted to see of I could push some standard reboot command via adb to see of it would "jig" it into place, but no matter what I try it always boots into download mode first.
and yes, I did turn on usb debugging

Nothing is wrong with the pins, USB is working fine and can be used in any other mode. I got ADB finally, I guess it was just not playing nice with me before. However, still anything I try the bloody thing still insists on booting first into download mode.
Just an update, it is still booting into download mode, tried a couple different stocks and still no good result. Anyone suggest any of the options in Odin might help work? Like F Reset Time or Phone EFS Clear?

I have seen this elsewhere, one guy suggested, using Keis, and it took him 2-3 times to get the stock to stick.
As far as checking those items in odin, could brick the phone. he also said, he got nowhere using odin in this situation.
Have you tried maybe flashing a recovery via odin? could be the recovery is corrupt.
what does this mean: in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal. <<< Can you boot to the OS?
I can imagine your frustration here...good luck.
I did try Kies and it would keep getting stuck at 10% (I let it sit overnight) so I had no luck with that...

Yes, I have gone from stock recovery to CMW and back to Stock and still nothing. As for you other question, yes, I can boot into Android. The downside is I can't turn the phone off unless the battery is pulled out. This is why I bought an HTC One and not an S4 lol .. thank god this isn't my phone, but it is frustrating because of all the things I've tried to do to fix it.
I was trying to install Wanamlite through TWRP, but I did a couple things wrong. I have flashed custom ROMS before, but I think I was just careless this time.
The things I did wrong are:
I installed the wrong kernel, I used this one KT747-TW-JB-4.1.2-ATT-05-31-2013.zip for the GS3.
I did not click "reboot" after install of the ROM and kernel, I held down the power button. Don't know what I was thinking!
I then tried the factory ROM through ODIN as discussed in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573, everything in ODIN told me things were going smooth. Now when my phone tries to boot up it just vibrates every few seconds repeatedly with nothing displaying on the screen.
I thought my phone was supposed to boot right up after installation!! Any ideas?
It will be better to keep the discussion to this thread instead of the ODIN thread. However, here is a thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327226
...with a very similar issue to yours. If you definitely can't get into recovery (keep trying different key combinations and timing) and Odin doesn't work, you appear to be screwed at the moment. Maybe you can try some ADB options. You will need to search for information about it and there is no guarantee it will help you.
Unless something else surfaces, Jtag repair might be the only option. You can search for information about that as well. Good luck.

Thank you, I treid the button combinations but sadly I don't think that's the problem. I'll try some ADB options and look closely at some other threads. Looks like I'll have to reactivate my iPhone 5 until I get this problem sorted out! What a bummer!

since you've already flashed back to stock via odin, i want you to try booting into recovery again. just to start from the beginning and cover all the bases.
pull the battery and wait a few seconds
reinsert the battery and immediately press the recovery combo: vol up + home + power (in that order). release just the power button as soon as your device vibrates while still holding down vol up and home.
if this does not get you into recovery initially, try the method a few more times and report back.
if this does get you into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and reboot.
Thank you for the thorough instructions. However, it did not work. I tried 12 times with no success.
Phone just kept vibrating every few seconds and would not go into recovery.
until we find out a little bit more about this issue, i personally dont have much advise to offer. are you familiar with adb?
scott14719 linked a thread pertaining to your issue. i'm sure you read it and see that you're the only one in this situation.
i will continue to do some research.
Isn't there a Kies emergency recovery or something. Just putting it out there.

Yep, but kies has to recognize the phone, which is hit and miss. If kies recognizes the phone, it would be worth a try.
Try to flash your carrier rom again using odin. Download links can be found here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ once you get the PASS in odin your phone may still be stuck in a bootloop. As xBeerdroiDx mentioned , try removing the battery then go into recovery and restore to factory settings. I had the same problem with twrp ,I was stuck in a bootloop , no restore , no boot nothing. My phone is working now thank god.
Try this and report back

sorry to bother you all. i bricked my device and it's only a few hours old. I rooted it using the io root method. that was painless.
anyway, it didn't brick then. i got a notification from verizon for the 4.4.2 update so I clicked download update it never installed and that's when the bricking started. Anytime I connect it to the computer it opens up like 40 disks and it says cannot be used unless it's formatted so I have to spend a while canceling those out. when I restart the phone it says the lg logo then the screen goes black . im stuck. i've been trying for hours. if i get the phone back i won't root it or do anything. ill deal with the bloatware, whatever. i've tried a lot of different things but to no avail. any help is appreciated. thank you for your time...and wont go into download mode....help please anyone....
i have no recovery installed....every time i try to cut the phone off it vibrates screen goes off and on showing the lg logo very quickly then goes black but remains on until battery drains
Im in the same boat

Did just like you with OTA today and now bricked. Guess I will have to call Verizon and see what they can do.

If you can't boot into stock recovery (vol down + power key) and can't get into download mode (this is where they detect root once FW update shows up and the bottom left corner says Bootloader: ROOTED) then you can rest assure as long as you are under warranty, send it in to LG directly.
Do not send it to Verizon as you may incur charges for replacement. There's insurance from Verizon, but the real "replace with no charge" warranty is sending it to LG directly. Make an account on their website, register your G2, and make a Repair request by online chat or phone.
I just got my T-mobile G2 back after 2 weeks with the same issues and while it took a while to get repaired, I didn't pay a penny and it works without T-Mobile ever knowing its different hardware (all they replace is the flash memory that is corrupted in the phone).
Only downside is that it came back with KitKat and unrooted which means I have to wait for a working root procedure for it unlike with JB (I'm not afraid to root it again since I know what messed it up before was custom recovery TWRP version 2.6.3.2 that doesn't support KitKat lol).

Not getting into download mode is odd especially for just accepting a OTA update. Remember since they accepted the OTA its gonna take a special way of getting into download mode as the phone will be constantly on in boot loop. not all of the time but most of the time when people say they cant get into bootloader they have to keep trying due to the phone has to be "Turned off" OR rebooted at the same time of holding down the key combo.

To get the phone to turn off, one has to reboot the phone (power key for 10 seconds) while holding volume up WITHOUT having the USB cable plugged in.
Recovery mode is a bit trickier by having to hold the power key for 10 seconds, then just as the phone reboots, hold PWR + VOL DWN and while holding VOL DWN, release PWR and press it again (gets to that factory reset screen where you press PWR 3 times).
Not trying to teach you this if you already know how, just stating it if the OP looks at this then he can try again with the above.
Also, Download mode is essentially the "bootloader" and it is locked meaning unless you have certified software (KDZ FW updater), you can't adb anything just in download mode unlike some LG phones that have emergency mode which is unlocked bootloader.

Yea I know the commands, The guide for going back to stock was created by me for the G2 haha, Hopefully the OP will see your post and try that
ive tried
ive tried factory reset "vol down & power"...its just goes black and stays the same
I'm having about the exact same problem. I rooted my phone a while back, I left it stock and just used some modules (xposed). When I noticed the update I of course was stupid enough to hit the update... My phone is doing the same as his. I can get to the factory reset screen but even if I go through there I get the same black screen (though backlit). I can't boot into download. I'm downloading the .tot needed for stock, but I'm not sure if that'll be a lot of good without download mode. I have everything on my phone backed up from when I rooted it (I'm missing a few pictures but nothing major.) Any and all help would be appreciated. I've got a bunch of precalc homework and Prom in a couple days so I'm willing to sacrifice sleep tonight. Thanks! (Made this account just for this, though I've used the site a bit before.)

It's cuz you're not doing it correctly.
Yes, you're supposed to depress "vol down & power" but once you see LG logo, let go of both buttons and then immediately hold down only the "power" button.
After a few secs, a white factory reset screen will appear. Ignore the warning and press power button. I know, its kinda scary at first, but then phone will load into recovery.
I can get to the factory data reset screen but when i choose yes it just gives me the secure boot error. I am able to put my phone into download mode by pressing up volume and power when plugging to pc, but cant get pc to recognize it. I am sure I am missing something.
i am also bricked. i cant get into download mode or recovery. i have twrp installed, cant get to that either. i have tried every button combination and all i get is a black screen and vibrations, no lg logo. need help.

Call LG verizon will void your warranty
Has anyone made any progress or did all just send back to LG?
I am in similar shape, can get to the white factory reset screen - which does nothing once I accept.
I can also get into download mode, but the phone isn't recognized.
Wanted to confirm before I try to send it back that I can't fix myself.
Thanks!
Also, did anyone who was able to get back to the hard reset screen have luck sending to LG? Or did it have to be completely bricked?
Im also bricked. And there is no recovery mode. download mode is usable. but when i in twrp before brick i deleted efs because i have a back up after that recovery had corrupted and driver in the rom memory to talk to pc had also deleted with efs(i think). I have an idea to fix but im not sure
If I can change rom from mainboard and replace it other rom from other lg g2? Will it solve my and our problem??????
thanks to reply.
Today I was finally able to get my phone rooted, install SafeStrap and get into TouchWiz. Thing is, I dislike TouchWiz so I downloaded CyanogenMod for note 3. I put the CyanogenMod zip in my downloads folder on my Note 3. I went into safestrap, clicked install, found the .zip and swiped to flash. After that finished I clicked reboot and I got black screened. I then took the battery out and then the **** hit the fan. I booted the device and the SafeStrap splash screen came up along with the stock bootloader android bot image and my screen was displaying all of these colors and tripping acid. I now have taken the battery out and am hoping I can save my device. For some information on the device, It's a Galaxy Note 3 on Verizon running 4.4.2 rooted. I cant even get into ODIN mode... I've been getting tons of views and no reply's so that's leading me to believe it's something major. If it is please don't be afraid to respond and if you need a clearer explanation please PM me so I can get this fixed. I need my phone for work and I picked a really bad time to start tinkering with my phone haha. Thank you so much for reading! :cyclops:
No sure but it sounds like you hard bricked your device ( no acces to download/odin mode or recovery).
"my screen was displaying all of these colors and tripping acid" sounds like a display error.
Put in the battery and keep trying to acces odin mode if the screen is working ( Hold power + home button + volume down) .

What should I do if that doesn't work? I've tried a few times already but I'll keep going at it. The screen has now shifted from "Tripping acid" to a white fuzzyish screen that shows the SafeStrap splashscreen kind of outlined.
Have you tried to boot into recovery? That is assuming you have a backup saved.
Put battery in...hold down power, volume up and home key...when you see Samsung logo let go of the power key only...hopefully it might boot into recovery. Just one idea...

OMG I GOT INTO RECOVERY!! I did make a back up but I did it in SafeStrap. It dropped me in the default BootLoader with a dead android with its chest opened up. Idk if this means something haha.
If it won't let you load the backup, you might could use kies software on a desktop or notebook to recover you device back to stock. Just another idea. Sometimes with enough persistence you can recover a semi bricked device. I sure hope you get it going. A messed up phone will make you pull your hair out....

have you tried to boot in to bootloader? Take battery out and press Vol down + home button then power button. If you get in there you can use odin 99% to flash an other rom or stock firmware

You must clarify if you can get into download (Odin) mode:
- if you can not there is some major flash corruption going on, not much you can do
- if you can get into download mode you need to write your stock ROM.
