Hi
Everytime I reboot my phone I get a message when it boots up: "Factory mode is on. Wifi and other functions will be disabled."
I tried flashing a stock rom and installing different custom roms without resolving the problem. I am on kitkat 4.4.4. Please help?

This issue occurs either when the ROM is not completely installed on your device or when the device triggered the factory mode to prevent some app from accessing the /system and /data partitions. In order to correct this issue, you will have to root your device and download Terminal Emulator or Terminal Application from the Google Play Store then type in the following commands. Let me know if this fixes your issue.
su
rm /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
rm /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
chown 1000.1000 /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
chown 1000.1000 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
reboot
Thank you for your reply. My /efs/ directory is empty. I cant find any files there. I use ES file explorer and I have enable viewing hidden files and root is ON.

That is a very odd situation. EFS directory should not be empty because layer 1 and layer 2 android devices kernels/basebands/OS are stored in that partition. I can't think of anything else at the moment other than flashing the stock ROM with ODIN again to see the results, but it looks to me that you've already flashed ROMs a few times according to the OP. Anyone else want to pitch in?
Did you do a full backup using recoveries? You've probably flashed wrong kernel or wiped partitions, restore efs backup or install stock ROM and kernel.
Also see this and this post, its a bit old but may be useful.

I Factory restored mine (unrooted and everything stock firmware and the issue will still come back. There's talk that people with this issue have to find a PIT and associated files just like on Note 3 but I can't find them for Note 4.....Same issue here, /EFS is empty even with unhide checked etc.

FIXED!! READ..VERY easy if you have a nandroid of existing rom or even a slightly older one in the TWRP/backups folder.
I fixed mine. I had an old backup from the current rom I'm running so just booted into TWRP and did a restore and selected the older backup and checked EFS ONLY and then rebooted and now it remembers wifi and no Factory Mode popping up so if you guys/gals have an older or current nandrpoid just restore the efs only from TWRP and you'll be good to go.! WOOT!!

I've debranded a UK Orange Flipout and unlocked to use on Vodafone UK.
The mobile signal is terribly weak and spends more time with no bars that with. It makes the phone useless as a phone however great the design is.
Sitting next to another android phone on the same network the bars are almost full on the other phone - when showing nothing on the Flipout.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there something I can do to re-configure the phone and make it work as a phone? I've had all the data settings from Vodafone reset for MMS and data etc.
If no answer it will have to go back to stock ROM and back to the shop.
Thanks.
Hey, I got the same problem. Had me temporarily switch back to Milestone 'cause Flipout wasn't able to even connect to the service..no signal at all. I noticed that Flipout has slow network acquiration compare to Milestone. But, I have to point out that I flashed it from stock to UK ROM without BLUR so it's more likely possible that something just went wrong. For now I blame the basebands and try to solve it that way..somehow. let me know if any news

ok, it was the baseband.. i changed it from what it was to this (attachment) and everything's fine.
you have to be rooted, and remount system as r/w
the original baseband files are located in /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default
basically you need to replace this folder with the new one and set the same permissions as the original files had. i don't know if you know how so just for sure, here's the how-to
i suggest you doing this:
0]if you are not rooted, install Universal Androot and press Go Root, then reboot your phone
1]unrar the attachment to your phone's sdcard
2]boot up the phone, switch to airplane mode
3a]if you have Root Explorer, navigate to /system/etc and push remount as r/w
3b]if you don't have that, install Root Toolbox go to Mount-System Mount Options-Mount System R/W
4]fire up Terminal Emulator
5]enter those commands: (enter after each line)
Code:
su
cd /system/etc/motorola
cp -R /sdcard/bp_nvm_default bp_nvm_default_nw
cp -R bp_nvm_default /sdcard/bp_nvm_default_BACKUP
chmod 755 bp_nvm_default_nw
chown root.root bp_nvm_default_nw
cd bp_nvm_default_nw
chmod 644 *
chown root.root *
cd ..
rm -R bp_nvm_default
mv bp_nvm_default_nw bp_nvm_default
reboot
6]after the reboot, turn off flight mode, let the phone get registered to network and see what happens.. hope this will fix your problem.
it's a bit tricky, i actually had to reboot after mounting system to R/W and giving Superuser permissions and mount again because somehow it didn't work for the first time.. anyway, let me know if anything goes wrong
Thanks, that looks a bit technical but ill give it a go... thanks for info.

Well I gave this a go - and I kept getting permission denied. sounds like problem you had with the system RW refusing to allow a copy.
Anyhow I am hoping I might have fixed it by using this link
http://dext3r.komodin.org/
And there is a radio file you can install under Quick FAQ with different country baseband radio files. Might help someone else ...
it didnt work
well, i did everything as written except i used ES File Manager to mount the /system as R/W and when it came to:
cp -R bp_nvm_default /sdcard/bp_nvm_default_BACKUP
it said "cp: can't create symlink '/sdcard....': Operation not permitted" for every file so i just did it manually with ES File Manager... that is only a backup anyway and shouldnt affect anything.
it just doesnt work.
and why cant i just drop the baseband files in there with copy and paste? that didnt work either.
i need baseband files for T-Mobile on the US network for the Flipout. does anyone have any others i could try?
thanks!
I installed a custom font on my Tab. I decided to try and replace the Roboto_Bold.ttf, and that's why my Tab started to boot loop. (Long story short: I did the same thing to my Nexus, but I was able to salvage what I could and am now in the process of flashing a new ROM). I wiped the Cache/Dalvik on my Tab and flashed the ROM I had on it, over itself without wiping--thinking it would give me enough control to be able to flash a new ROM. I was wrong. I install the latest CWM (v5.5.0.4) and I go into Recovery mode. CWM won't let me Wipe Data. It just sits there, then ultimately kicks me back to the CWM "Home" screen; the same thing happens when I use an older version of CWM (v4.0.0.4). I've tried restoring backups and nothing works. I even had difficulty mounting the Tab on my laptop long enough to transfer over the newer ROM.
I have no clue what to do, and I feel so powerless. I usually can fix this kind of stuff by myself, but I can't this time.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Shameless bump.

Here is a good guide to start over (is the last part "Re-“Stocking” Yer System…"): The Guide. The only problem is that you'll lose all your data.
I had a similar problem, but instead of going back to stock, I manually wiped the data/cache folders via adb, some folder was the culprit, it couldn't be deleted with its content, so first I deleted everything inside the folder and then the folder (in terms of commands, I did a rmdir instead of rm -r).

This is not a step by step guide, be careful if you decide to use this method, so you won't delete anything important.
First, to access the tablet shell
Code:
adb shell
To gain root permissions
Code:
su
To remove/wipe the data
Code:
rm -r /data/data/*
That's when I encountered the problem, I had to delete directories by groups until I found the problematic one. In my case was com.google.android.tts/
Then I did:
Code:
rm -r /data/data/com.google.android.tts/*
Code:
rmdir /data/data/com.google.android.tts/

That was the problem, I couldn't do it in cwm.
Just wanted to put it out there that I erased the data using Super Manager. Not a clean enough delete for preparing it for sale but good enough for my intentions.
Hi, i need a fix for this and fast !!! I've tried all that is listed on xda about this issue, but to no avail. Anyway, i forgot my pattern and went to the forgot pattern menu. My wifi was off, so i figured it would give a prompt of some kind to turn on the wifi and then log on to my google account. But nooooo, google supposes that everyone's wifi is on all the time. Please help, what do i do ? I rebooted to recovery, i made a nandroid and currently i am adb pulling the twrp folder from my N7. I would have just factory reseted it, no probs, but i remembered i have some EXTREMELY important works in colornote that i can't afford to lose. Please help, what do i do ?????
Looks like you answered your own question. Unless your Android isn't encrypted, just boot into TWRP and backup your data using adb:
adb pull /data/data C:\backup
Click to collapse
The main thing you will have to concern about is restoring those data and make it readable by the app. There are several ways, but you can either:
adb push C:\backup\colornotes /data/data/colornotes
Click to collapse
Don't forget some devices you need to give it write permission first: adb remount rw, though should not be needed with TWRP. Or just copy the folder back using a rooted file manager.
Then go into adb shell and fix permission of the files so the app can get access to them:
adb shell
su - (again shouldn't be needed wile in TWRP)
chmod -R 644 /data/data/colornotes (or 777 for full access)
Click to collapse
Tips while in adb shell:
Check permissions of files by typing: ls -la
Check what partition is mounted and whether you have write privilege to it by typing: cat /etc/fstab
Also, if you use a custom rom like CyanogenMod or AOKP, there is an option to enable all widgets on the lockscreen. Just put the Power Control widget on the lockscreen, then you can toggle WiFi on and off. (Can't remember if this is also possible with stock.)
Have fun.
OR have a look here.
Looks like either of the two methods suggested would be feasible with only a recovery running, but the 2nd one is easiest (as a custom recovery wouldn't necessarily provide a statically-linked sqlite3 utility).
if it works it doesn't require any wiping.
BTW guess how I found this.... wait for it .... wait for it.... wait for it.... I used google search.
Hi, i forgot to mention that i made the twrp backup while i was locked out and whenever i try to restore from the backup after a factory reset, it goes back to square one... And when i did a full wipe and hoped to use titanium backup to extract stuff from the nandroid, it just gives me and empty list, but the backup is there, all 5gb of it

Well, that is to be expected, is it not? You are restoring exactly what is already there - effectively a no-op.
OK, I just booted into TWRP (2.4.1.0) and confirmed that the (equivalent of the) following disabled my pattern lock on the next boot:
cd /data/system
mkdir foo
mv locksettings.* foo
mv gesture.key foo
I did all of the above (the 'cd' command is implicit) using TWRPs touch interface - didn't even need adb.
ymmv as I am using jdq39/4.2.2 and my tablet was not in a "locked-out" state, but its an easy thing to try.
So, before I do a firmware update (In this case 4.2.2 to 4.3 OTA) I do a Titanium backup and a TWRP backup and copy both sets of backup files to my PC; it obviously makes no sense to only have backups on the device you are backing up. I upgraded to TWRP 2.6.0.0, did a full backup, and as usual I went to copy my backup files over to my Windows 7 computer using Windows Explorer and I can only get a couple of the files to move over. No warning, no error, no nuttin. This has always worked before......Did something change, and if so, how do I fix it?
I see from another post that TWRP changed the permissions of the backup files in the latest version of the program, and in my case the location as well. The workaround is to a) change the permissions on all those backup files, which I could see the nightmare problems that could cause later on when doing a restore and/or the security issues or b) doing an adb pull.
SOLVED.
The adb pull did the trick. All files were transferred over to my PC.
I had several issues getting adb to work:
1) I had an old version of the SDK installed on my PC which was causing a devices not recognized problem or something similar.
2) I didn't notice the message about verifying the RSA on my phone, which once verified, fixed the phone "offline" problem.
3) The screen lock on my phone was coming on after its timeout and locking me out from seeing the phone.
reverted to twrp 2.5.0.0
Same problem here with Google Nexus i9250 / twrp 2.6.0.0 / win7 64bit. Tried to copy backup of (BOOT/SYSTEM/DATA) via MTP or ftp from Nexus to PC. Only the first two files (boot.emmc.win/-md5) were copied. After downgrading to twrp 2.5.0.0 everthing was fine.
I had the same problem. It is caused by strange suid permissions set by TWRP. Solved it using chmod 0664 /data/media/0/TWRP/... (as root)
I was not able to adb pull before changing the files' permissions.
More details here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44120545&postcount=14
(Google found that HTC One thread first, so I didn't search any further)
Type this in Terminal Emulator:
su
busybox chown - R 1023.1023 /data/media/*
That should solve all permissions problems.
I had no trouble at all by doing the following:
Access the sdcard from /data/media/0
Copy data.ext4.win and system.ext4.win to a temporary location.
(The "Set UID" and "Set GID" permissions were automatically removed. If not, you can change them from here.)
Copy the files to PC using MTP.
The remaining backup files from the TWRP directory can be copied normally.
Done
Note: You can instead just change the permissions on these two files inside the TWRP directory, but I did the temporary location copy just to be safe.

Did you plug/unplug your device after running this command? There shouldn't be any problems. Furthermore, now you should be able to copy your TWRP and TiBu backups successfully to your computer. It's a pretty straight forward process.
Im on twrp 2.5.0.0 with Android 4.3. I cant copy the BACKUP folder directly to my PC with the default windows explorer because the backup isnt stored in /sdcard/TWRP. How can I fix this? I used to be able to do this without adb push/pull...

Since my original post 3 months ago I updated all my programs to 4.3 friendly versions as each was released (superuser 1.0.2.1, Windows drivers, TWRP 2.6.3.0, etc.) and now I don't need to do adb pulls any more and I can just copy and paste files from my phone to my pc and all files are copied over without missing any of them. No, it doesn't have anything to do with this command since it's just a way to set different permissions.
Not sure if this will help anyone else, but I searched forever trying to figure out how to write into the system folder using Terminal Emulator on the Note 3 to no avail. I found a slew of posts that said to type "mount -o rw,remount /system" to achieve this. When I used this command it didn't return any errors so I assumed it worked, however no files ended up being copied and pasted to the location I wanted. I found numerous other examples that were supposed to enable writing to the system as well, but none of them worked. I finally figured out how to get it to work on my Note 3 by typing "mount" in terminal emulator and noticing that at the very beginning of the string that was returned was "rootfs". So if you are wanting write to your system using Terminal Emulator on the VZW Note 3 here is what ended up working for me:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw rootfs
to return to read only enter:
Code:
mount -o remount,ro rootfs
I wanted to figure this out because a bug in TWRP v2.6.3.0 maimed my efs partition and bricklooped my phone. Even flashing the Stock Developer tar by Beans wouldn't bring it out of the brickloop. I was able to get out of the brickloop by following this thread, but even though my phone booted up and the IMEI # was correct, my /efs folder was missing in action. This caused odd things to happen like my lock screen not functioning and the power button instantly turning the phone off instead of bringing up the power menu. I discovered this was because the phone was placed into something called "factory mode" and that to fix it you needed to edit some files in the efs folder, which were completely missing on my device. Member js0uth graciously sent me his efs folder from his Developer Note 3 and when I copied it to my phone it began to function normally again (big shout out to js0uth!). However, this folder was completely deleted once again after a reboot. So now you can see why I was looking for a way to copy these files using Terminal Emulator. I ended up making a Tasker profile with the Secure Settings plugin that automatically copies the files from my ext SD card to my system folder on boot of the device. In order to mount, copy/paste the files while retaining the correct permissions from the folder that js0uth sent me, and unmount the system I had the set up my Secure Settings command as follows:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw rootfs;cp -Rpf /storage/extSdCard/efs/* /efs/;mount -o remount,ro rootfs
So now I have a livable workaround for my problem until I can discover a way for the phone to rebuild my own /efs folder.
Edit: See radionerd's post for a permanent fix to this issue and be sure to hit thanks under his name if it helps you.
I did the same to my DE. Corrupted EFS about a month ago after a few flashes using TWRP 2.6.3.0. Boot loops for 28 hours of hell until I followed your tracks to the trick that deleted my corrupted EFS folder, and created a new empty folder. I guess this would wipe out IMEI, Mac, and more in models that store phone specific data in EFS. We lucked out I've read that our phones have that info in a few other folder not EFS
Since wiping EFS I have run stock ROM, CM11, and now bean V6. I didn't see the factory mode popup until recently. I noticed that the screen will flash when leaving or entering cell service.
My corrupted EFS was 3MB. I'm curious what's the size of the EFS folder from js0uth?
Were you able to enter the factory mode on string? something like this?
Code:
# echo -n ON > /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
this is from an S3
Thanks for documenting your steps to recovery.

Setting the Factorymode folder to ON is actually what disables that mode. Seems backwards I know, but when it's set to OFF (or if the folder is completely missing as in my case) that warning message will display. If that folder is intact on your phone then you should be able to use a string to disable or enable Factorymode.
It got worse before it got better

No worries, I went from an annoyance of no lock screen to bricked for over 6 weeks. This happened after trying to do an EFS backup.
I've learned a lot since back then, My DE is back 100%, EFS is repaired. I think we ran the same script which actually points to the wrong mount in our phones. It brought us out of bootloops, but efs was pointed to block12. Qualcom snapdragon Note-3's use mmblk0p11 to load /efs.
If you still have to load the tasker script, I think I figured out an easy fix to rebuild your original efs folder.
I would backup mounts first, delete /efs folder. Then run the original script, but this time change from 12 to 11.
Code:
adb shell
su
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p11
mkdir /efs
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /efs
Bet that would do the trick
