Hey, so I am new to this group! Thanks for existing and being so willing to help!!
So here is my question, I want to root my GS4 but was not able to find good information on how to do so when running Android 4.4.2. I do not want to downgrade to 4.3 so please don't suggest that option. I also (obviously) don't want to brick my phone so a "safe" option would be nice.
My hardware again is a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-i337, Android Version 4.4.2, Carrier AT&T, USA, and last three characters of the Baseband version is NB1.
Anyway, any tips, pointers, links or other help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Too bad! Do you believe that there will be an option eventually? Or is there a "hard wall" that completely prevents it?

Maybe. I don't know. I downgraded my phone after I updated to 4.4 because I didn't see much of a difference and I wanted to root and flash ROMs.

There's no hard wall, but devs are doing other things like Hash working on kexec and others looking into bootloader exploits and whatnot. May I ask why you don't want to downgrade? The method's been tested and simplified a bit, and you don't need ODIN every time you want to flash a different ROM or mod now.

Thanks for the quick responses! I just got the phone Tuesday (yes I know the s5 comes out tomorrow) and some how I missed that At&t decided to lock boot loaders. I guess at&t is jealous that a group of enthusiast and hobby programmers can produce awesome firmware and doesn't have their trash/bloatware. I'll probably give these a try soon. I think the stock firmware is okay but I do miss my root privileges and aosp/cm/aokp ROMS. Thanks again guys.

Good news... the guy who said there is no way to root 4.4.2 with SuperSU is wrong
Use towel root and then install supersu from market but don't open it yet... Now install terminal emulator open and type 'su' and supersu will prompt. Type into terminal emulator without the quotes of course, 'pm disable com.whateverknoxappnameislol' I can't recall the Knox app name off hand. When you finish close term emu and open SuperSU no and update binaries, then it'll prompt to disable Knox and it'll succeed. Reboot, uninstall Towel Root, and enjoy.

that method works if you are on ni1. Just use towelroot for anything else

I'm not finding much in ways of options for root currently. Is it possible to flash my phone back to 4.4.2, root once there, then sideload 4.4.4? Using something like Odin maybe?

Maybe this VIDEO helps you. It's for one sm-n900a.
Perhaps it would if i could find the corresponding files for the n900v. Any ideas where i can find them?
i found everything but this file:N900VVRUCNC4_N900VVZWCNC4_VZW.zip
Update
After some extensive searching i found the files and hope to attempt to downgrade according to video posted ^ with my SM-N900V. I found a great site for FW versions for anyone encountering this problem in the future: galaxynote3update
update
This method does not work on Verizon. I found the Verizon equivalent files and attempted this but got a SW REV CHECK fail when trying to download 4.4.2 FW. ATT must not have a version check in theirs. I have exhausted every method out there. Hoping someone comes up with a one click root for this configuration soon cuz not having root sucks
Did you ever succeed?
I just received a new Note 3 from my warranty company. I was hoping it would have 4.4.2 on it
but it has the same version as yours. I really could use root.
Any luck with your phone?

NJ6 was I believe an update that came out after 4.4.4. I believe 4.4.4 came out as a specific version and then a minor update to 4.4.4 came out which is NJ6. The radio from that upgrade is available somewhere around here to be flashed.
EDIT: I was wrong I believe. NK1 is the newest 4.4.4 build. NJ6 was the 1st 4.4.4 ROM out. NK1 was an update to that.
Thanks for clearing that up.

What if I flash to an earlier build first, like MJE or something? Shouldn't that allow root access?
bootloader is locked preventing you from going back.
Nothing past 4.4.2 can be rooted, you cannot downgrade to an earlier version to root.

But if you are rooted at 4.4.2 there is a way to get to 5.0 directly and stay rooted. I do not know how but somebody I just saw in this forum said he did it.

I just switched back to my GS5 because I broke my iPhone 6. I am currently running 5.0 Baseband G900VVRU2BOE1. I've been trying to Odin back to KItKat. I get a fail in Odin every time. Is there something going on with the bootloader that prevents downgrading?

It sounds to me like the aboot qfuse counter changed which would mean that there's no going back to any previous FW. It was only a matter of time before they did it since the VZW S4 lollipop update did that.
We won't know until we get ahold of either the update.zip or the odin tar. I have 2 VZW S5's and both refuse to tell me there's an update available even when I Odin back to a stock FW.
Nice. That's what I hated about Apple. You own the phone, yet, still can't do what you want with it. Well, thanks for checking it out.

It's most likely more of a Verizon thing than a Samsung thing. Although with the 5.1.1 S5 update on T-Mobile, the kernel prevents rooting and T-Mobile phones are on unlocked bootloaders which means they don't care if you root or install a custom rom so maybe it is becoming more of a Samsung thing now.

the thing is, with Verizon, you can choose to not accept the upgrade a few times, but ultimately, it is forced on you...which is why I rooted my S5 the same week I bought it (to avoid unwanted 'upgrades')

Please guys tell me there's a way to root the galaxy s5 for att smg 900a on lollipop version 5.0. If there's not should I upgrade to the latest firmware?

You can't root g900a on Lollipop as of right now. AT&T locked the bootloader when they released 5.0 BUT.. you can downgrade your phone to KitKat. Then root it using Towelroot root and then flash a prerooted lollipop rom using flashfire Here is a link with a bunch of people that downgraded there g900a to KitKat and how they did it and worked around everything: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s5/489071-tutorial-downgrade-samsung-galaxy-s5-5-0-4-4-kitkat-6.html This will help you out in starting the root process on your phone. This is not true. If you are running completely stock lollipop either becuase you purchased the phone with it on it, or you took the ota it is not possible to downgrade to KitKat, you will brick your phone. If you were rooted on KitKat, you can update to a prwrooted lollipop, which I am running now for example, and using that method allows you to downgrade as well with no issues so long as you don't take the ota. This only applies to the g900a.

Also not true.. You can downgrade your phone from 5.0 to KitKat DEPENDING on the version of bootloader. That will make or break the whole possibility of downgrading. Check the link I posted and read through the forum. It has been done by multiple people but the general consensus is if your phone's bootloader is past a certain version you're screwed for now and if you can't downgrade and root but you want to in the future I would suggest not updating for a while until there is a method of rooting your current version bootloader.

I did check the link you posted and only found people that tried it on a g900a unable to downgrade. There was no time that you could go from stock L to KK on the g900a.

To be quite honest dwade. You can save yourself a lot of headaches and stress by putting your phone on craigslist and getting yourself the g900f unlocked that way you can avoid all of these processes and the risk of bricking your phone lol If you're looking to root and get into modding your phone, AT&T & Verizon phones are the worst when it comes to locking things down.

It's certainly the case for the F variant that towelroot only works on 4.4.2 that was compiled before the end of June 2014......If there is a build that matches these conditions for the A variant, towelrooting may be possible.....If not, I guess you'll have to try CF Root or similar...
Edit.....check this thread......
