I know there are 100 different threads on both of these subjects but they are out of date, cluttered, and unorganized. So my question is, can I unlock the bootloader on this thing and root it, or not? Here's some info:
Model: C6606
Carrier: T-Mobile
Android Version: 4.3
Build Number: 10.4.C.0.814
Any help is greatly appreciated.

*#*#7378423#*#*, then Service Info> Configuration (I guess).
If there is written Bootloader unlock allowed: YES, then you can proceed futher for bootloader unlock proccess,
If there is written Bootloader unlock allowed: NO, then your bootloader is hard-locked and you can't unlock it, it's impossible to make it unlockable.
If there is written Bootloader unlocked: YES, then congratulations, you've unlocked your bootloader!
If your status is YES and you want to get tutorial, how to unlock it, quote my message and I'll reply regarding your question.
Hope I helped
The C6606 has a non-unlockable bootloader. You can look in the service menu as explained above, but it's definitely permanently locked.

Well that was a waste of $130 then. What about root, recovery and ROMs? Any hope for that?
Got rooted by using TowelRootv3, now to see if TWRP can be installed and such. I'm guessing the locked bootloader just keeps me from flashing kernels on this phone right?

You can use XZDualRecovery.
Yes, you're correct. You cannot flash custom kernels so can't flash any custom rom that requires a custom kernel, such as CM, AOSP etc.

As mentioned before no custom kernels with locked bootloader. Stock based only.

Data and wifi are fine. I've never used wifi calling since I have unlimited talk and text and have cell service most of the time and don't really care when I don't and wifi is not available when I have no cell service. I know I no longer have wifi calling apps or what not. I finally have no t-mobile junk on my phone. It is nice.

Thanks for the input, guess I will check that ROM out. Been trying to get a recovery installed to no avail.
His ROM has TWRP in it. Install XZDual Recovery, back everything up and follow his instructions. I like his ROMs the best because there is no need to flash the kernel separately. My last Z bricked its self about 3 reboots after flashing a stock kernel with the flashtool.

Nope. Your ROM version is android 4.3 right now. Flashing the new ROM will update the necessary stuff. On first startup you might see messages like updating NFC drivers and so on.

Hmm. I never needed flashtool. If you are rooted I believe there is one that you download the app, install it and have it install the recovery. I just got off work after the shift from hell and 12 days on and another 9 to look forward to so Im going to bed. Ill look for the one I am talking about when I get up if you have not found it by the. It will be in the dev area here.

Don't worry about it, get some rest. I got everything going now. Just needed the ADB files (not fastboot) and I got recovery installed, making a backup and will be flashing shortly. Thanks again for all your help man!
This is why I asked about data. After flashing the ROM, I had no data at all. I didn't know I had to manually add the APN myself.
Also, none of those ROMs contain a radio that has a baseband that allows T-Mobile LTE. If you're on T-Mobile, you're stuck with 3G or H+. So it looks like I'll be sticking with stock from now on.

Hello,
I've just installed the leaked 4.1.2 JB ROM.
The phone boots up but it is asking me for "sim network unlock pin".
I know for a fact that my phone is not locked. I purchased it from a private store and had installed 2.3.5, 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 stock ROMs of different carriers.
I even switched between two different carriers without a problem.
Any idea what I can do?
Someone told me it might be the modem file that is "confused"? Has that got anything to do with it?
Thank you for your help!

You can get root by flashing Philz kernel for recovery. It can be flashed through stock recovery.
Not sure about rollback to ICS, but my guess it that it'll work since the problem is caused by software

I'm sorry. I guess I'm a bit excited.
At first, I was a nervous wreck. I actually thought I'm never going to unlock my phone and that I've screwed things up.
It didn't help when I rolled back to ICS and the "SIM network unlock pin" appeared either.
Eventually, I downloaded an app and paid about 2.5$ to have it unlocked.
Then, I decided to try installing JB one more time and now it works and everything is working smoothly!
Can't thank you enough.

You could reflash the software back to before the update with the KXZ firmware and try the process over again. Depends if the hassle is worth it to you.

I did the update and protected root but my wifi was messed up and wouldn't turn on. I did RSDLite to downgrade and redo it all and it worked fine.

Your wifi was only screwed up within Recovery mode (write off) correct?
I have a similiar issue. Whether its affecting other things or not, i dont know.
But what do you mean you restored via RSD lite and did it all over again and it was fine?
How did you ujse RSD lite to reflash the firmware since you got the updated OTA, it wont let you downgrade

I restored the 17.51 firmware after the botched update messed up my wifi and it worked fine and I actually ended up doing it 2 times since a titanium backup messed up my phone. Me too. My wifi is FUBARED in recovery. It's because we don't have the new kernel and to be technical were using the old system/recovery in our "recovery mode" I think that's why it's working in the regular mode and not recovery mode..... Or that's what I understand. Though I'm probably wrong.
When I upgraded I got a failed upgrade after final boot. Although it still says the newest version. I'm tempted to RSD back like some others have just to try but I don't want a paper weight.

While I'm kind of excited to see SafeStrap out, and updated (fixes phone/data, etc...), I'm still hoping some attempt is in the works for unlock on at&t.
Regardless, there aren't any custom roms to really flash anyways.
Had I an unlocked bootloader, I'd have a custom kernel in the works, and maybe some custom roms with some TeamAcid love.

You can use wondershare mobilego to root the phone. The software has one-click root. This is the easiest way however the software also install a lot adds on your phone.
If you want to do the clean manual route...
1.You need to downgrade your phone to Kit-kat 4.4.2 NB1/NC1 .
2. Use towel root to root the phone.
3. Install safestrap or flash fire.
4. Flash the desire Lollipop rom via safestrap or flashfire.
You can find all the instruction and files in this post.
question after downgrading can i upgrade back to 5.0.1 or do i have to use a custom rom ?

Then you better be on T-mobile
Most smart phone make for US came with locked bootloaders.
To avoid that I bought international version. The problem with international phone on ATT network is that you can not get 4GLTE signal for mobile data. You can get either 3G or 4G based on your phone. ATT told me that only phone make for ATT network could get the 4GLTE signal.
I heard international phone can get 4GLTE signal on T-mobile network.
Hello all,
Attached are modified factory roms that will flash an at&t or t-mobile phone to an unlocked phone. This means no more bloatware and in my case much better handoff between the lte bands.
These images reuse the carrier bootloader (I'm working on it) but everything else from the radio to the rom is from the unlocked priv.

T-Mobile -> unlocked hybrid: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767153589
Directions: Unzip files. Hold power and volume down until phone reboots to fastboot. Launch flashall.bat. Follow instructions. This WILL delete your data so have a backup or don't I'm your boss. Wait. Done.
As usual I am not responsible for you bricking your phone. That being said even if the wrong file is flashed the phone gets stuck at the fastboot screen where you can flash the right file.

Totally possible. If we had root just modify the host file and set the verizon server update ip to localhost. You should be able to install DNS66 and do something similar. This will take digging on your end to figure out what the update IP is though.
I have an ATT Priv, so if I flash this I'll get next time OTA from BlackBerry instead of ATT? Saw the one above with the Verizon update and went back to bloated version.
Reporting back in to verify that it worked flawlessly on both at&t and t-mobile variants I have. Now if only we could get root lol
Thank you so much for your effort
I have an ATT branded Priv which got unlocked from ATT directly and has successfully installed this ROM. It works perfectly without any ATT bloatwares, but this built is old and when I check for system update it shows my system is up to date. However the most recent built for unlocked factory image is AAL202 according to the blackberry official reload software website.
So does this ROM OTA updates via ATT server or directly from Blackberry server?

Don't forget to factory reset and clear the caches via Recovery after you flash.
Enjoy!
Can I flash this onto my G930A?
is it necessary to factory reset??? Something that I've always liked about samsung is that I update using Odin and the apps and confs still the same... but if I have to factory reset, then I will lost everything...

All Samsung's have multiple ways of backing up and restoring. All you have to do is back up using Samsung cloud and when you start your phone it will ask you if you want to restore your phone and then everything will automatically come back to your phone. Factory reset fixes boot loop and other issues

I have an unlocked phone, I'm not sure how atnt works with other Sims or with their phones. I previously had atnt firmware but then switched to TMobile since I have TMobile sim

Yeah I went ahead and flashed it. Works fine, better signal than on the ATT software and all features work

Great, I also found my signal to be better as far as staying connected is concerned. At one point my data kept going out on the atnt firmware and I had to keep restarting the phone or mess with the Wi-Fi calling. I haven't had any problems since I flashed this and plus 8 is faster than 7 so I'm excited to not have to mess with this phone anymore and just leave it up to ota updates.

Which sim card do you have and which carrier provides the phone because then you might have to flash back to 7 and use your carriers official firmware or flash your carriers official 8 firmware.
I have a SM-G930U. I wasn't expecting this to work...and it did flawlessly. Another surprise I got was flashing this firmware fixed my dm-verity issues. Thanks a lot for this thread. It gave a new life to a phone gathering dust on a shelf.

OEM unlock is an option in Developer Options. Has that always been there?

It's there but it doesn't work. It's just a toggle button that would come with most Android builds for the phones that actually have unlocked bootloader.

If there was root before (there is), then I'm pretty sure it will soon be available for Oreo too. I don't see why there wouldn't be unless those individuals who created or found the engineering kernel for MM AND N, aren't around to help out again. If not, back to 6.0 it goes.
HI, Now I'm on a custom rom with Nougat. Sim's carrier is Orange(UE). If I flash this Official Oreo version the phone will become Locked, right? Any idea how to unlock it, no charges? Thanks!
Thanks for the upload. I was trying to see if SamMobile had this up yet but they did not have it up when I checked. I have the MetroPCS variant and it did have 8.0 available on SamMobile already. I am switching from MetroPCS to T-Mobile so this will be perfect to get my phone 100% ready.
