[Q] Ambient Display - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
on my SM-G900F the Ambient Display is not working. When i get notification the notification light is blinking but the display is not waking up. So i have to double tap the display to wake.
I tried several Rom's with the same result. So it must be a general problem with my phone???
Can someone help me out?

Ambient Display isn't available in Galaxy S5. I think so.

[Q] Ambient Display issues

Hello to everyone,
I have a Note 4 N910F with stock Android 5.0.1 and i have seen some issues with the ambient display.
With this feature the phone is supposed to turn its screen on every time a notification arrives. My phone turns its screen on for some notifications like messages and viber but for other applications the screen doesnt turn on. Allthough if i press the home screen the notification is there on the lock screen.
Its kinda annoying thing because thats one of the major functions about android lollipop.
I would like to mention that its not any settings problem because all the notifications for its application are enabled on my phone.
If anyone knows if this is normal or software issue or application issue it would be very helpful. Thank you.
First of all... How did you get ambient display to work?
I don't have the option although sammobile posted a video with a lollipop rom having this feature.
I dont know if i am right but by ambient display i mean that when a notification arrives it appears on the lock screen and the screen turns on.
For me for some apps the notification is on the lock screen and the screen doesnt wake but for other apps like messages and viber both notifications and screen wake is there.
for that reason i use an app that whenever there is a new notification the screen turns on.

Hey. Could you share your csc files so that I can enable amibent display on my device?? Your device must have it only because the country you're in.
That's not ambient display. This function is missing in the recent release of 5.0.1 touchwiz. Sammobile did show it being there in the sound and notification menu above the daydream option but seems Samsung left it out in the release. I'm thinking that the delay with release for other European countries is due to bugs and missing items, I'm not sure. The original delay was to get tw lollipop to work with the vr headset. At present its hit and miss with notifications lighting up the screen when they arrive. Some apps do it and some don't. Ambient display is where you pick up the phone and notifications are shown in black and white for quick glance as is the case for nexus 6 lollipop or cm12. I'm hoping the rollout to other countries well have solved the missing ambient display and the priority notification not having any time option like in blocking mode on kk.

[Q] Ambient Display

Hi Guys,
one question. I can't get Ambient display to work on my SM-G900F.
I tried several roms. None of them is possible to get it working.
I tried all settings for Ambient display.
It must be a general problem with my phone.
Any idea?

Moto display keeps pulsing when receiving a notification

Hi,
I use moto display without gesture detection. When i receive a notification (mail, text message, ...) the screen turns on and slowly turns off which is the expected behaviour. But then the screen keep turning on/off indefinitely until i open the notification or dismiss it.
Do you have the same behaviour ?
Moreover this behaviour is not linked to any phone mouvement as it is just laid on the table without any vibration that could wake it up.
It seems to me that this new bahaviour appeared with MM.
Either you disable Moto display for notifications or slide the unlock icon to the right so it will dismiss the notification on moto display but not on the notifications bar.
Yes, but do you confirm that this is the expected behaviour ?
I thought it was supposed to turn the screen on just one time and not to turn my screen into a christmas tree. Moto display is supposed to save our battery life, not sure it is going to reach that target with this behaviour, especially with a screen that is not an amoled...

It's gonna pulse every minute or so for about 10 minutes I believe. Then it stops. If your phone is face down, it won't pulse at all.
Thanks for your feedback, too bad that we can't configure it, it's way too long by default imo.
I had a problem with the Lollipop and now the MM versions of the Moto Display. You can dismiss the notification, but it will start pulsing again for the same notification a little while later, with nothing new happening. Wasn't too bad with Lollipop, because I just switched to Ambient display which worked perfect. Now Ambient is gone for some reason.

I've checked, i don't have this behaviour on my side, once the notification is dismissed it stops pulsing... i don't understand how it can be different from one phone to another.
Edit : How did you switch to Ambient display btw ?
I haven't found a way to switch to Ambient on MM, you can only turn off Moto Display which gives you no notifications at all! It was easy with Lollipop, just go to the Moto settings and choose which display version you want.
Well it could be acceptable to turn it off with a notification led...

Maybe unfortunately for some, Motorola got rid of Ambient Display in MM.

Notification LED dimmer after the APD1 update ?

Has anyone noticed this ? After the APD1 update, the notification LED is quite a bit dimmer. I tried upping the screen brightness, thinking that it may obey the screen brightness settings. No luck. This really pisses me off, since I rely on that LED, given that the AOD feature does not display most notifications.
dude did the auto-restart issue solved under the new firmware ?
Same for me, notification light definitely dimmer, a shame there seems to be no apparent settings to adjust this.
I didn't notice that. What kind of led color is dimmer?

My LED doesn't appear to be dimmer after the APD1 update, though I've really only seen blue so far.
What colors are appearing more dim on your device?

Good question and idea. It's the green color. I will switch to other colors if those are not dim, maybe red.

The green LED just got activated on my phone. I think it's just as bright as it was before the APD1 update.

Just did a test again: the LED now obeys the ambient light sensor, in bright light it is bright, and in low light it becomes dimmer (you can try by covering the sensor). Same with the AOD, as someone reported in another thread.

Very interesting [emoji53]
Sended from my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Gold Platinum
Under sun light the led is barely visible. Violet color in this case.

I have the "dimmed green led" issue too. APD1 here. Interestingly the first couple of activities after a full reboot for the green color are bright, then it dims... I thought of a faulty led at first but now I know I'm not alone.

I confirm that with a medium light the led is almost visible [emoji19]

Ok. I can confirm that the led now uses the ambient light sensor to adjust brightness. Weird but true

I don't see this adjustment. In a bright environment it is almost visible. At least on my phone. How do you say that it use the ambient light sensor?

Adjustment is not based upon screen brightness, which could lead to errors as screen brightness is only refreshed with phone unlocked. If you receive a notification and there's light falling directly on the ambient sensor while screen is off you'll see a bright led. If you cover the sensor (with screen off) you'll see a dimmed led. It is worthy to note that this adjustment is made only at notification arrival and not after. So if you have the phone inside a pocket you'll always see a dimmed led even if you take out the phone in the sunshine. If you have the phone out in the sunshine when notification arrives then you'll see a bright led.
I have thoroughly tested this and it's how the system now works (at least on my phone).

I get it, interesting but I don't understand why it works only at notification arrival. Anyway if your phone does that so the other phone must do that too. P. S. What is exactly the ambient sensor?

Confirmed its controlled via Light, so rules apply the same as OLED / Always on Display
As for the battery life, to when did you update?
People have complained about battery life, But i am yet to experience this issue everyone else is.
With that in mind, Linux is a rather complex system, and has some cleaver memory management utility's
(it does not operate like windows, Close down your apps to free up RAM, Linux does this on its own)
So keep that in mind, Then you performed a update, This no doubt a few settings to the kernel have been changed, Or even a update / patch.
So any information its retained about applications, Ram and process memory will / SHOULD be ereased and re-done
and the behaviour of the kernel is different.
As a result of this, you will notice a increase in battery drain for the first few days.
You can apply this same logic and method to Flashing Custom ROMS.
You have a Version of a customer ROM (For this example V1.0)
The developer releases V1.1 With some very minor adjustments
To ensure the running of the ROM, you wipe the device and start from Fresh.
WOW after installing this ROM am getting MASSIVE battery drain
(But give it 2 days or so and you will notice it will settle)
(After the Kernel has collected enough information about running process, whats needed whats not, what you keep opening and closes, What is needed to suspend and keep active)
The list goes on.

Lineage and Ambient Display

Hello Community,
I am thinking about buying a G6 but I have a question first regarding the Ambient Display function that comes with Lineage.
As far as I understand it if Ambient Display is enabled the screen will show some information if there's a notification for example from an incoming message. Right?
So let's say the display is black and is lying on the table for example and there's a message coming in the display activates for a few seconds and shows the message. Does it pulse then? I mean does it go on and off in intervals until I act. I mean like a LED notification. Or does it just activate once?
Is this different between 14.1 and later versions?
Thanks for answering.
