[Q] what's the difference between MHL and slimport?

(moderator: could you please move this to the Q&A section)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just read this on endadget: http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/30/nexus-4-boasts-slimport-support/
Questions:
(1) What's the difference between MHL and SlimPort?
(2) Does either one of these two option allow us to charge N4 while connecting to an external display?
If yes to (2) I'm 95% for getting an N4, and if yes to (2) with SlimPort then I'm up to 99.9% (engadget claims that there will be SlimPort-to-VGA adaptor -- yes some of still needs to give presentation using VGA...)
so does that mean that mhl will not work? -=X
http://www.analogix.com/products/slimport.html
I guess it's not compatible with MHL, but apparently it allows mirroring without external power, and it apparently also supports OTG, so i guess it's basically a "better" version of MHL.
*coughs* http://xkcd.com/927/
It also has a pass-through USB port to allow it to be charged whilst being used. I wonder if it would allow it be a USB host and SlimPort at the same time.
Here's how I think it works after trying to research it. I could be wrong about some of this so don't take it as fact.
If your TV specifically has built-in SlimPort support, it means that when you connect your N4 to the TV using a SlimPort cable or adapter, the phone will actually be charged by the TV through the HDMI cable. If the TV doesn't support SlimPort directly, then the cable/adapter will still work, but it won't charge the phone, and as a result your N4 will lose battery over time. In that situation, you can connect a separate power cable (in the same way that MHL works) if you want to charge simultaneously.
more recent version of mhl should do usb OTG at the same time as Video
According to all knowledgeable Wikipedia... MHL can power devices too, so I don't see what's different between it and SlimPort.
The HDTV provides power to the connected device (5 V DC/500 mA with MHL 1.0, 5 V DC/900 mA with MHL 2.0).

Slimport can also handle N4 --> DVI, VGA or Displayport

I just tried the MHL adapter that worked with my Galaxy Nexus, and it definitely doesn't work with my Nexus 4.

So the newer slimport adaptor is not "backwards compatible" to MHL?
Too bad... I just ordered a 2013 Nexus 7 and a slimport adaptor and I thought, perhaps this adaptor would work with my Xperia Z, too...
juste some new devices

[Q] any way to get MHL?

i know the older phones had it but i tried it on my cell just now and nothing =\ any ideas on how to get it working? i did read that we have mhl 2.0
Let me google that for you....
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=galaxy+s4+mhl
Works for me. You need the 11pin adapter the old 5 pin will not work. If you had one from the SIII it will work.
Works fine. I used my 11pin adapter from my s3 and it's good. Amazon has 5 to 11pin Samsung adapters for about 9$ or if u don't have an mhl cable get the 11pin.

the cable being used in that video works on the S4 also
As I noted earlier my 11 pin adaptor works from my S3 works on the S4. I tried the adaptor without attaching the power cable and it worked on the S4 so we must have MHL2.0. With MHL2.0 the phone charges through the HDMI cable. Samsung has a new adaptor for MHL2.0 which is backward compatible for the S3 an Note II the one thing I don't know is if the 11 pin S3/Note II adaptor allows charging. I will have to see by using it with a longer Netflix show.
Ah cool!.... I tried my Infuse 4G MHL and it didn't work....
Cool the GS3 works

[Q] USB adapter

I think this is supposed to be in Q&A selection or at least Accessories. Not General. But anyways from what I can tell the Note 10.1 (2014 edition) uses a micro USB (thank god) note the 30 pin like the note 10.1 now. So you would need a normal micro USB to USB (full size) OTG adapter.
Mini and micro USB are too completely different sizes. The standard for smart phones uses micro USB (excluding apple)
Mini USB can often be found in GPS's for example. I haven't seen a phone or tablet use a mini usb in year's in less it's a cheap off brand purchased and shipped from China.
So, if I'm correct and the new note 10.1 does use a micro USB as its charging port. Then what you have for your s3 will work because s3 is micro USB not mini.
If helped hit thank you

Thank you very much for all the info.... I found it VERY helpful and now I know whats up.

No prob. Glad to help. Honestly I don't understand why mini USB was ever created. All it does is add confusion and annoyance. When you can't charge that specific device cause all you have is micro USB cables laying around lol

We had a noname MHL-adapter lying around, it worked fine with my gfs Sony Xperia Z but not with my Note 3.
I think it has to do with the pins, MHL 1.0 only has 5 pins vs MHL 2.0 which has 11 pins.
First thing is, we don't know what cable you're using... how many pins? 11 pins is required for 3rd generation MHL 2.0.
Also, we don't know what ROM you're using? Custom roms, especially non tw based, often have issues with MHL, or don't work with it at all.
More info, better help.

[q] samsung galaxy a3 a300h/ds usb audio

I just want to ask you guys if A3 is capable of OTG usb host? Because I am planning to use it as a source for my DAC. Any audiophile out there? If not I will just be using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm input for my headphone amp. Thank you!

But is that a hardware limitation or stock firmware? So perhaps future cm roms could bring usb host otg feature to Galaxy A3 (A300FU)?

Usually it s not a hardware limitation, i don't know the case of the A3, the problem is in the kernel since it doesn't support otg, I dont expect future roms to bring this feature cuz the problem is more complicated than it seems especially with the touchwiz roms
