I installed it on mine. It was impossible to use but not because of performance issue but rather because the stupid design fault that there is no "home, menu, back" buttons at all.
So much potential wasted.

Mess with resolution.. Looks like it is cut.. lol..
It DOES have buttons below..

[Q] Replace nook color with a novo 7? Advice needed!

So, I'm considering selling my nook color and buying one of the super-cheap novo 7 tablets instead. I'm just not sure how good an idea that would be!
I think that, performance- and software-wise, all the novo 7 tablets are--or will be--better. The 1080p video with hdmi output would actually be useful. I'd have money left over. The nook however seems to have a far better screen, with a higher resolution, has cm9 sorta on the way, and seems to have a slightly higher build quality (no real idea tbh).
Any thoughts?
Ive been able to test one of the Novo 7 units (Novo 7 Advanced)... and generally with the Novo 7 line there are a few things you should know in advance...
There are three different models out... Novo 7 (Basic), Novo 7 Advanced and Novo 7 Paladin...
All 3 models come preinstalled (on most shops) with 2.3.4 Gingerbread... however you can download the 4.0.3 ICS "Alpha" Build from the manufacturer from several mirrors on several websites / forums.
For example I know that all 3 FW updates are available on the german cebt-shop website.
Another thing that comes to mind is (I couldnt notice it myself while testing it, but others did, check youtube reviews for more info) that video & audio sound seem to be out of sync for whatever reason for some users...
My personal oppinion bout the origin of this problem is most likely a badly encoded video that Android just has some hiccups with while playing back...
As for the cameras on it... both front and back... nothing special bout it really... the usual cheapo bull**** like in other tablets... but its enough for casual skyping, the mic is somewhat okay but I would still go for a headset...
And the biggest downside you will see for all 3 Novo 7 models is... the resolution...
800x480 may sound okay but keep in mind its the same resolution you have on your smartphones now-a-days... and now imagine this image stretched to a 7" screen... you can easily make out the pixels on this one... so if you are used to the 1024x600 screen of the Nook then you will - no doubt about it - be disappointed once you hold the Novo 7 in your hand...
I couldn't believe the difference when I first saw it... Nook sure scores here...
Bout the touchscreen itself, its good, very good, no problem whatsoever, it reacts to the touches nicely, pinch to zoom works great, overall comparable to the Nook, and I didn't notice the "close to the border" problem I have on my Nook once in a while...
And a final touch you should know... the latest Novo 7 model, the Novo 7 Paladin... sucks bawls... the only Novo 7 model you should go after is the Novo 7 Advanced, which to my disliking... is hard to find now-a-days on the web... I think they ditched it for it's bull**** ripoff the Paladin...
They removed the HDMI out on the Paladin... aswell as the hardware touch-buttons on the bottom... very sad to see them going that way...
And the worst thing bout it... they downgraded the CPU to a single core one... just like the Novo 7 Basic...
A long story short...
Novo 7 Advanced -> Best thing you can get for low cash that has "it all" (cam, mic, ics, etc.)
However... be prepared to get a slap in your face when you get downgraded to Smartphone resolutions...
Summary: If you want something speedy for low money that you can skype with, etc. Novo 7 Advanced is your man, if you don't mind slower speed and occasional lag and use it for reading, music and casual surfing, then stay with your Nook... your eyes will thank you.
Making this bold so it catches attention...
Ainol announced two new models - coming next year january which should be of interest to both the Thread OP and of course me and maybe other users...
Namely the Novo 7 Wizard and Novo 7 Aurora... they will cost 150€ (Aurora) and 200€ (Wizard).
This new series released by Ainol is ment to provide a higher definition alternative to the Novo 7 Basic / Advanced 2 / Paladin series, operating at a 1024x600 resolution just like our beloved Nooks.
Just stronger of course.
Anyway... @Thread OP: I suggest now that Ainol announced this... just wait until mid-january and then get a Wizard (if you love power) or a Aurora (if you're a casual user).
I sure will switch to the Wizard once it's out. ^_^
Thanks for the detailed response!
I dunno bout the Aurora but chinagrabber has a novo 7 elf for sale, and it seems to have a higher-res IPS screen. Has a mali-400 gpu, but I dunno how that compares to the vivante, and I can't find details on whether or not it has hdmi-out.

I would be careful with this shop...

I'm wary of the shop. I know some people who've been happy with their services, so it might just be the tech equivalent of "sweat and sore balla of pig"
I'm probably waiting for the Novo 7 Wizard...
I already contacted my favorite asia importer when to expect the new gen devices to be available... sadly, due to regulations and laws it will be a while until I can even dream of laying a finger on one of those...
Back to waiting I fear... unless someone finds a better alternative > Nook Color.
personally i would recommend you on the incoming Onda Vi40 Elite which includes better specs with a more friendly price
ive a couple of mates pre-order them last week
hope i can get some feedback from afterwards
Just get the Novo 7 elf. Its what I ordered.
Same screen resolution as the nook.

Hi, I have the Novo 7 Basic. If I were to compare the specs to the Nook Color that was released last October 2010, the nook would be better when it comes to display only (IMO). Both the nook color and my tablet do not have full market access, though with my ICS, I have more market access than the nook. You can fiddle around with the nook though, and add more market capability. The problem is that the Nook Color is running Froyo, which some consider to be smartphone tech and not tablet tech.
The Nook TABLET is a different animal, and was released November 2011. It looks lovely with it's IPS display and its Cortex A9 processor.
The Novo will be cheaper however, and I think comparable if you get the new Novo Elf. I would prefer the ELF with its Allwinner A10 processor to the Nook. For those who favour the Advance, there is a Advance 2 being released in February. It will have an A8 processor. I am unsure of which one the Wizard is, except I find the specs say Alwinner A10 processor, so maybe it is the similar to the ELF?
Here is the latest Ainol Aurora next to the Nook:
http://www.android-tablet-compariso...pare-android-tablets.php?t1=nookcol&t2=ainaur
not all the info there but a good view - on paper at least looks better than the Nook.
I have one on order now, can't wait to get hold of it.

Curious how it will perform.

Hmmm...the dolphin browser I'm using didn't like the security of the above link. Looked kosher from what little I saw, but I didn't do much other than view the certificate info and leave. Just a heads up to anyone who might not want the risk.
I would guess the info can be found elsewhere, you know?
NOVO 7 ELF ($149 at uPlay Tablet) is a much better choice than NOVO 7 Paladin ($129)
I have both Ainol NOVO 7 ELF and NOVO 7 Paladin. I would say it's definitely worth spending $20 more to get NOVO 7 ELF.
NOVO 7 Paladin is the cheapest Android 4.0 tablet (you can get it for only $129 at uPlay Tablet, Ainol's representative in US). It's quite nice, but it has a few drawbacks:
1. The screen edge is not flat. No like iPad and most of other tablets, where the front face of the tablet is flat, NOVO 7 ELF has edge higher than the screen. This is because Ainol used to be an MP4 maker, and such design is cheaper.
2. It's MIPS based, not ARM based. There are lots of apps simply won't run on it, including Facebook app.
On the other hand, ELF is a much better choice because
1. It's running the latest many-core Allwinner ARM based A10 CPU. It's even faster than my MacBook Pro when loading webpages.
2. High resolution screen. Its 1024x600 resolution is higher than iPad 2.
3. Very thin.
4. 4X HD.
5. It has a front facing camera for video conferencing!
6. It has a HDMI port to output HD video to your big screen TV.
7. It's ARM based, so you don't have apps compatibility issue as you see in NOVO 7 Paladin, which is MIPS based CPU.
The only drawbacks are:
1. No standard Android Market installed. But you can install it yourself by following the instruction in the forum on uPlay Tablet.
2. No back facing camera.
Well, I've done enough checking, I'm probably going to order the Elf in a couple of days

A variant of XBMC is SPMC http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?8363-SPMC
Thats been working very well for me.
There are many good sticks out there, the one I have: CX-919 is under $60 and has the same core as even the X7 ($120+).
Negatives include overheating, bad power adapter, low build quality, no root by default, 720P kernel by default

Best 8" Windows 8.1 Chinese tablet under 150$ - Teclast, Onda, PIPO, Voyo

Hello,
I am one of those who are looking for a 8inch windows 8.1 china tablet with high specs at a decent price (<150$). I opened this thread because I can not decide which one to choose and I am sure this would be useful for future possible buyers of such tablets.
So, I have found so far 4 options:
1. Teclast X80h
2. PIPO W2F
3. Voyo a1 mini
4. ONDA V820w
Prices range from 110$ to 145$
They all share mostly the same specs:
-IPS 1280x800 display (16:10)
-1.83gHz Z3735F Intel Atom processor quad-core
-2GB DDR3 RAM
-32GB internal memory
-4200 to 5000mAh batteries (Onda 4200mah, Pipo 4500mah, Teclast and Voyo 5000mah)
Onda V820w is the newest tablet and it should be the most valuable since it supports SD cards up to 128GB. I wanted to buy it right away despite the slightly lower battery capacity. 32GB for Windows really is not much at all. The only thing that stopped me buying it was TinyDeal support: they said is it worse than Teclast and PIPO quality-wise. This is why I opened this thread. I started looking for tablets and these 4 I came up with.
Teclast X80h: I did not find any review yet to say anything bad about this tablet. I guess it would be a safe buy, but because of lack of negative feedback I am in doubt of buying (sounds crazy haha. I am just saying that perhaps those who had problems just not wrote on review section on tinydeal/aliexpress). In January 31st it will be released dual OS - Android and Windows 8.1 dual bootable version of X80h. I thought that we could upgrade the tablet as well to dual OS? (I am asking since I do not know)
PIPO W2F: TinyDeal support also told me that this one is better than Teclast X80h. Why? They did not mention anything, they said that it is simply better quality and people prefer this. So, again I am in doubts about this one. I remember looking for PIPO P1 a month ago and heard that it has some issues that tablet with the sound, it overheats and so on.
Voyo A1 mini: I've read about 3 negative feedbacks on aliexpress about this one: all related to the touchscreen and one also mentioned some problem with an unsoldered wire that solved it by himself.
I just simply can't decide. Honestly, the 128GB SD support of Onda V820w really grabbed all my attention, but I want something that will not break after a month or two.
Those who have experience with these tablets/own one please help us, the ones who are looking for such tablets, with a review: cons and pros and what you recommend.

PIPO: http://www.tinydeal.com/pipo-w2f-8-windows-81-atom-z3735f-tablet-pc-w-bluetooth-40-p-140654.html
On Aliexpress they are cheaper, except for Onda.
I can only speak for the Voyo: it supports 128GB microSD and no lose wires or bad touchscreen.

Ok. That is something i did not know. On TinyDeal they say up to 64GB. I've also seen more reviews with weird/laggy touchscreen response. Could you make a brief review? For example, for how long have you had it? Have you had any problems? How has been your experience with it since now? Etc..
I decided to go for Teclast X80h.
PIPO (in general) and Voyo (A1 mini) are cheaply-made rubbish tablets. Problems encountered by many people: battery fail for PIPO, touchscreen and charging port gets defective for A1 mini. Both heat like hell, especially when charging. So, do not buy those cr*ps. As for Onda I did not even bother to look for reviews. TinyDeal themselves said not to buy it, so I will not. I am sure they know why, only that they did not want to tell me.
Teclast is the best chinese tablet maker on the market. They really advance with the technology. They introduced the Dual-OS on chinese tablets, starting with X98 Air and now X80h also come with dual-OS, has 5000mAh but supports only 32GB microSD card for about 135$. That's about it. Reliability over functionality.
As for the xda members "thanks" a lot for your help. I don't even know why I even bothered to write this thread.
I'm looking at purchasing the Pipo W6.
Is it everyones consensus here that Pipo make crappy products and I should stay away?
here are the specs:
pipo-store.com/pipo-w6-3g-tablet-pc-quad-core-8-9-inch-1920x1200-window-8-1-2gb-32gb.html
I recommend you Teclast X90HD. Muuuuch better screen and better quality overall. Teclast is the best chinese brand for tablet.
Check it on Aliexpress, price is about the same.
root?
hello ... I also decided to buy this tablet rather than the 'x98 air because I prefer a more compact format but I liked the dual boot .... I have noticed, however, that there isn't a community behind this tablet, unlike the x98 air and I can not find a way to root ... Any ideas ???

I guess it will take some time until a community will build up. I will go for X80h as well when it gets released. Wanted to get Onda's v891w, but it's not worth it. Onda has serious hardware issues. Too many people has complained especially about V975w, so no, I'll stick with Teclast.
Was not come out? I have ordered on tinydeal (still to come) and wrote that it are dual boot and has installed both windows and Android ....

Teclast is a very reliable brand, and has been making protable multimedia players for many years, not a bad choice, but they are not the best, Have you heard of Lenovo, they are better, but also, they are not the best.
I ask to teclast customer services for the root and they reply me i can use the same toolkit used on x98 air...
As soon i can, i will try on my teclast x80h....

Just bought an X90HD, but the invisible dividing line in the middle of screen (whatever you wanna call it!) is kinda annoying
Code:
bbs.teclast.co*/forum-94-1.html
there are couple of threads here that this issue has been discussed
it's not only the visibility issue, sometimes (especially when you split the screen for multitasking) screen literally splits and you have to restart. there are some speculations that it might get fixed with BIOS upgrade but doesn't look too promising as the line is there even in the BIOS itself. i have not seen any Teclast official staff responding to this phenomena and that makes it more unlikely to resolve
is there anyway that i can get in touch with Teclast technical team? my only source for now is the Teclast forum which is in chinese and google translator can be inaccurate sometimes
I would go with Teclast X80h. Its quite a good tablet.
I'm suprised there isn't a thread yet about the teclast x80h as it is now a dual os device also.
I own one and for the price it is a steal, full windows pc in the form of a tablet. paid 120usd for it.
I looked at the spec, but the 5 points touchscreen is a no-go for me.
Can any body tell me about the battery life

I was looking for someone who might have this one!
Have you tried playing any games on it?Mostly simple ones like LoL,HL2,Dota 2 etc. How are the framerates?
Also how long does the battery last on full use?
Just received my W6 last Friday. I don't play any games so I can't comment on performance on that front. Mine came with a QA issue. The adhesive that was holding onto the front glass was not doing its job properly in one corner so the glass was popping up. Not sure if this was due to the cold weather during shipping but instead of sending it off for replacement, cause that would take forever, I bought some 3m double sided tape, and did the simple repair myself. Other than that, maybe isolated, issue. I have no other problems. Battery life is decent but not excellent.
Looking forward to installing WIN10 consumer preview when it comes out next week.
In terms of performance for games at the same resolution, they should be identical. They are, after all, using the same innards. Stability is probably the same. I think your deciding factor would be if you want the higher resolution display on the W6 or not.
edit: just found another guy on the pipo forums who had a similar issue with the front glass becoming unglued.
http://www.pipo.cn/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=13321&highlight=w6 its in chinese, use google translate
I've been usin Pipo w6 for around 3 months now. It IS a beautiful tablet with the metal band around it. Its screen resolution is also very attractive. If anything, the battery is a bit disappointing "windows + high res screen". Also, the GPS did work well for me. Did anyone face this problem?
Other than that, I will be more than willing to recommend it for anyone who's looking to buy a windows tablet.
I will try to install ubuntu on it in the upcoming days.

You can guess my point though if you search the title of this thread. There is a youtube video which I will link in 6 posts which I find fascinating.
This smart watch has android, is inexpensive, has a pulse monitor, and "e-ink" screen. I wanted to know if it is any good. It has the same cpu as the SmartQ Z1 but is much thinner 9.5 mm.
Thoughts?
No SIM or WiFi, 320mAh battery. Android 4.2.
I'm sure it's a good piece for those that prefer notifies. I guess someone will have to buy it and test it.

Yeah no SIM sucks, or WiFi, no Compass, no GPS. But it does have Bluetooth 4.0/2.0 whatever that is... anyone know if that is a mistranslated 4.2?
That is a small battery true 320mAh but that possibly leads to the lighter weight, lower height of the watch which is 9.5mm thick.
It does have Android 4.3 actually, and it uses the same cpu as the SmartQ Z1 which is already ported. It only has 512 megs rom and 512 megs ram, which will be a problem for adding apps, that right there is almost enough to kill it.
The big thing it does have is.
Pulse Monitor
E-Ink Background, it switches between e-ink and TFT seamlessly, there is a youtube video that makes me want to buy this watch.
Run time is 7 days on paper, while displaying time 100% of the time using e-ink (very cool)
It has android so it can be upgraded at some point by the ppl in this forum!!!
If there is something similar / better out there for the same money let me know before I buy this one! I am leaning toward this one mainly because it is so thin, its actually thinner than the apple watch (10.5mm)

Still 5 posts to go
So, there is the Reedone X1 which is interesting but does not have the low power e-ink TFT thing going for it. I like the specs but dont like the 11mm thickness and lack of e-ink TFT.
Reedone website shows the Reedone X2 (there would be a link here, but you have to find it yourself because reasons!) The Reedone X2 is the same watch as the X2 Smartwatch from IQI, with same pictures and stats.

This looks the same as GearBest are selling as Atongm WO13 http://www.gearbest.com/smart-watches/pp_166847.html and has the same display as he MiMi Mi-W3/Podoor PW305II http://www.gearbest.com/smart-watches/pp_139964.html

Not waterproof - the MiMi is IP67 rated.
Much larger in height.
Proprietary charging cradle - what is the point when it isn't waterproof and uses exposed electrodes? Just something else to lose or break.
Edited to add: The BT 4.0/2.0 is because it uses a dual module that connects with either 2.0 or 4.0 protocols dependent on the device it is connecting to.

Wish someone had this, close to pulling the trigger, but I don't know whether just to not get an android based watch and get the new No 1 S2 (Sun).

I don't believe it is Android based, apart from the splash screen there is nothing in the videos or adverts to suggest that it is. As it uses an Ingenics XBurst CPU I would guess it uses a version of their MIPS compiled Linux.
Although on Pandawill and Geekbuying, it clearly states Android 4.3 as the OS. Also, didn't the smart Q run on the same JZ4775 chip and run Android? i'll check with all the china shops tommorow and see what they say about the OS.
LightInTheBox says Android too, I was just going on the videos and screenshots, neither of which look like any Android I've seen, but of course it could be heavily customised.
Read the reviews of the NO.1 G2. Doesn't sound like a good buy. I'd definitely wait to see what the S7ler or others reviews have to say about the Sun.
maybe they mean it's compatible with android, not running it as an os?

I saw a video of the No. 1 S2 and the screen goes to the edges and beyond. I saw lettering go past the screen, which looks glitchy. I was tempted because of how slick it looks but they didn't do any work on switching the square scene to a round screen.

Geekbuying claims it has Android 4.3 on it....but still not 100% convinced.

Yes, It does. that video shows the Android boot animation, plus Android is the only OS JZ4775 supports.

I am torn between this one and the Reedone HG-X1.
ISI X2 :
72.08 - Lowest Price
TFT Screen, Heart Rate Monitor, Pedometer, etc...
Reedone HG-X1:
80.99 - Lowest Price (black plastic?) at
Same as ISI X2
+GPS
+Waterproof
+Built in USB Connector
- 1mm thicker at dial
They are very similar. I have not seen a video on the Reedone yet though.
Any thoughts on these? Do they actually run Android? Would android gear be portable to these?
