Join now if your are currently a user of any of the Samsung Galaxy S devices!!!
Moved this thread from the Samsung Tab forum where it did not belong.
What is the use of these groups?
This is a dupe of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774092&page=1
And I'll reiterate my thoughts from the other thread:
1)This thread is misleading. It ISN'T an official group. It's possibly even less official than this forum, and there is no reason to believe Samsung is in the group.
2) I STRONGLY feel it actually is a step backwards, because you must be part of the the group to even read threads. To me this seems to suggest it has a greater interest in boosting numbers than encouraging cooperation, and sharing of information.
3) The assumption being made that you can easily blend all the development streams of the Galaxy S variants together is a wrong assumption. Whilst the phones are similar, until developers get together to merge all the drivers into a single rom (to create a universal rom), each phone does need it's own development board.
In that case consider it Closed
Been away a while, but indeed this can be seen as a violation, the thread adds nothing to the information on XDA and is spammy in it's nature.
Had an atrix for a few months now and have come to this forum almost daily to read and learn but have not posted until now. Below are just a couple general questions/opinions that I have based on how this forum conducts itself especially compared to other forums I frequent.
1. Why do people think they are owed something by devs and especially for it to be done on a timetable? To the best of my knowledge these people all have work/school/family’s/friends and work on this stuff on there own time and are not paid to do it.
note: to those who complain about making donations to devs and thinking this entitles you to the above learn the definition of DONATION, summarized as “gifts given to benefit a cause with nothing expected in return.”...otherwise it would be a purchase, investment, or wage.
2. Why can’t people read a thread before starting a thread or posting a reply, usually to ask a question that was already answered several times already in that thread or others?
3. In relation to question 2, why does this forum not have more moderators, especially in the Dev forum were people can’t seem to grasp what should be posted in there or what a appropriate reply is. Almost every thread worth readying takes 5x longer to read than it should to weed through the morons who seem to just want to voice there 2cents worth (and most isn’t worth that).
My theory is, if everyone just took a few minutes to search and read before posting then not only would they not fill the forum with junk they would also learn and potentially be able to contribute to the overall knowledge of the forum. I do want to thank those who already do this, I know I have learned an immense amount after coming here a complete android noob.
I agree with you for donations, however, I take exception on those who have spread themselves too thin, have opened up way too many projects and failed to deliver usable results on any of them. If you've got the donation pot out and you fail to deliver on all your promises, expect some reverb to come your way.
As for the rest of your post, you're definitely preaching to the choir
I'll be honest, I'm a little disappointed in the tone that gets set through this forum sometimes. Just like the devs have families/jobs/life outside of this forum so does everyone else. Now I 100% agree with using the search feature or even google to find information you need, I just think it doesn't always have to take a smart a$$ response when someone asks a question.

I agree with you fully and that is why I truely believe my idea would clean up the forums immensely. (at least the important part - dev section)
Create ANOTHER sub-forum dedicated to announcements/discussions by actual developers. Make this forum public so all can read and keep up to date, but only those specifically allowed, such as recognized developers are allowed to reply. You could even split the existing dev section into two: Recognized Developer talk/User Developments.
This would:
1. Stop people asking for release dates, they are able to see exactly what is being done and when
2. Stop the release threads, such as PseudoROMs and Fastboot files for new SBFs getting clogged with "0MGz Tkx BRuu!"
3. Maybe make more developers post about their current status if they know they aren't going to cause another flame war or pointless thread due to arguing.
Just my two cents.

we tried this on the samdroid forum and it worked ...keep a dev section for releases and a discussion section for the releases.
so every mod/rom had a thread in the dev section (restricted to dev's only for posting) and a thread in the discussion section for questions and thanks etc.
Consider this thread your one place to chat, moan and guess when the jelly bean update will come out, or anything else related to jellybean on the SGS3.
I need everyones help to keep this thread somewhat sane, report any trolling or flaming and don't respond to it.
All other threads on this topic will be closed.
Keep all your posts in this thread polite and make sure you follow the rules. I have bolded a few points.
For all your JB OTA needs, see this thread
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
2. Member conduct.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.
2.2 Nudity: XDA is used by people of all ages, including minors. It's not acceptable to post nude/pornographic imagery, which includes exposure of the male or female genitalia or of female breasts.
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and/or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive, therefore none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.
2.5 Courtesy towards other Members: Treat new members the way you would like to have been treated when you were a new member. When dealing with any member, provide them with guidance, advice and instruction when you can and always with respect and courtesy. Never post in a demanding, argumentative, disrespectful or self-righteous manner.
2.6 All members are expected to read and adhere to the XDA rules.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, then pay for it. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained. This is a site of developers, i.e. the sort of people who create such software. When you cheat a software developer, you cheat us as a community
7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)
8. Donations.
We appreciate all donations to xda-developers.com, it keeps our forum online and well maintained. As a user you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work. However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
11. Don’t post with the intention of selling something.
Don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. Proprietors of for-pay products or services, may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or a free version of their product for XDA users and offer support, but not to post with the intention of selling. This includes promoting sites similar/substantially similar to XDA-Developers.com.
Do not post press releases, announcements, links to trial software, or commercial services. unless you’re posting an exclusive release for XDA-Developers.com.
Encouraging members to participate in forum activities on other phone related sites is prohibited.
Off-site downloads are permitted if the site is non-commercial and does not require registration.
Off-site downloads from sites requiring registration are NOT encouraged but may be permitted if the following conditions are met:
A) the site belongs to a member of XDA-Developers with at least 1500 posts and 2 years membership who actively maintains XDA-Developers' support thread(s) / posts, related to the download,
B) the site is a relatively small personal website without commercial advertising/links (i.e. not a competitor forum-based site with purposes and aims similar to those of XDA-Developers.com.)
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by the dev or freely share it. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the dev decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use.
In regards to permissions, same rules remain for this but if permission was already given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under severe circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.
13. Advertising and Income Generation
Commercial advertising, advertising referral links, pay per click links and other income generating methods are forbidden. Do not use xda-developers as a means to make money.
14. Create only one User Account
You are allowed one User Account at xda-developers. If you create additional accounts, Moderators will disable them and your original account may also be disabled or infracted.
15. Keep posts/threads on-topic
Whilst a minor amount of off-topic posting may be overlooked, the general rule is your posts / threads must be relevant to the Forum / thread in which you are posting.
16. Bumping Threads (posting simply to force a thread to the top of the thread queue)
Do not "bump" a thread more than once per 24 hours.

Nice!
I'll start. I dont think JB for our devices will show today for some reason. I think it will be a week or 2 yet.
Somehow,i have the same feeling about this also...
But i'll just keep checking the forums...LIKE A MADMAN!
As much as I'd love it if the update comes on the 29th I won't hold my breath. Updates never seem to happen when they are rumoured to be happening unfortunately.
I could be wrong but I can't personally remember any that came out on the date they were rumoured other than Apple crap that is released on known dates
Hi everyone. Wanted to know..will I lose my pictures and other files if I upgrade to Jellybean?

Unless you choose to do a factory reset then no.
However, as always with updating firmware, always back your stuff up. You never know!
Thanks for this sticky lets keep the boards clean
On topic: I'll be checking for JB tomorrow in case the rumors are true, here's hoping (watch an ICS update come with a version number similar to the JB leaks just to troll us)
Good idea with the thread :good:
I was getting a little frustrated with all the "Jellybean update now!" threads that had me thinking it had arrived!
I am looking forward to it though, I'm guessing within the next few weeks...
I've played around with a couple of the leaked JB ROMs, but I'm currently going through a phase of enjoying a completely stock experience, so I'm eager for JB to arrive.
Good job, admin! The SGS3 forum desperately needed some cleaning up! Try going over to the HTC One X forums. Theirs is all clean!
I've heard that the Stock JB for Galaxy S3 I9300 will be released today. But nothing came out but the Latest Leaked Version: LH8...
What's happening????(((((
I'm currently running LH8, seems pretty stable. Only one issue found so far AllShare Cast is on and if I try to turn it off it turns Wifi off as well. Turn Wifi back on and AllShare turns back on as well.
With Touchwiz I can now add apps to folders inside the app drawer without it pooping itself everytime (seemed to be a common issue with the other JB's)

seriously, theirs is clean because they are all currently enjoying 4.0.4
I love the fact that samsung is now really working hard to bring us the best possible flavor of jelly bean. If I remember, there were not much leaks for ICS. Overall, I am loving the improvements.
We are waiting JB and we will get it soon. Whats after JB?

We will get it today.
After Jelly Bean comes Android 4.2.0 Kush Bush. :fingers-crossed:
Currently, the AOSP Jelly Bean now has too many bugs. Some Apps cannot run smothly. Example: Facebook - sometime force close, Fruit Ninja - a bit lag and has some force close when we stop the game,... I Hate those Force Close stuffs:|

It's official from today but it will be pushed within next days, so have a little patience. After a month you won't remember if it was We or Fr wen you got one.
Just moved from HTC Desire JB custom rom to S3. There isn't sooo much new compared to Samsung addons in stock rom. Google now is cool, maybe some more smoothness will come along as well but no big leap as from GB to ISC.
Just wait til it's 6pm in germany and the samsung press conference at "IFA" starts.
I am almost certain that samsung will not be releasing the update today, and I am even more certain that they won't officially mention it at IFA today, it was all a silly rumour thats got way out of hand.
The update will arrive in the next 2 weeks (IMO) but today is nothing special.

Really didn't want to do this but EVERYBODY that posted here, post in the Official *** New Device Forum Requests *** thread.
This may be the only way we are going to make this happen.
Would like to publicly request a dedicated section for the Umeox x201. This covers such devices like the the AW-414, AW-420, Vapirius AX-3, Omate TrueSmart ans at least three other devices based on the x201 platform.
Current issues with not having a dedicated forum are;
Informational master thread keeps getting buried
Cannot add development releases to the Dev DB
Development projects are not being posted due to lack of a development section
The current Omate TrueSmart main thread is now over 100 pages long and includes development, Q&A, general discussions and is near unmanageable
There is a lot of cross posting of the same information on the AW414 and TrueSmart threads because, except for case and name, they are the same device.

A section for this class of smartwatch would greatly help things. It would make it easier to find information because we could have single-topic threads. It would be easier to contribute because catching up with a thread would be quicker. It would allow the community to grow and operate.
But of course it would be useful to US. Every obscure device community could ask for a section and argue that it would help them. We need to argue that our device is so popular that a section is required. Here are some points to consider:
* Within the "Other Smartwatches" section, the "Omate Truesmart" thread has about 40% of the posts of the "MotoActv" thread. However, the MotoActiv has been around since 2011 and the Truesmart has been around since - well, for all intents and purposes, it isn't even out yet and there's still a thriving community
* There are more posts in the "Omate Truesmart" thread than in the entire "Pebble Smartwatch" section. Don't get me wrong, there's a huge and dedicated Pebble community out there. Here on the XDA forums, however, the Umeox x201 community is larger, more active, and in need of a good home
* A dedicated section will improve the quality of the site. Having monster threads like the "Omate Truesmart" thread make the site disorganized and difficult to use. If the information is easy to find, the users are better informed. Well-informed users make a better community. Better communities bring in more advertisment dollars.
* The time to act is NOW. The early devices are beginning to ship, and the there are only a few developers churning away. Over the next month or two, the number of devlopers will explode. Implementing a new section now will allow time for proper organization. Allowing a thread to balloon to 10,000 posts and we'll need to hire more mods to help sort the information into proper threads.
Does it make sense? Is it worth it? My professional experience in forum management (of which I have none) says yes!

Note to Admins:
We currently have info, fixes, development environment guides and so on spread out across multiple G+ communities and posts, two forums and personal pages and are already running into issues where even searching doesn't even find some it. If you decide to not create a section for the x201 please let us know as we will need to find some sort of solution.
agreed
You have my support. Now let's flood the official request thread

Would be grateful for a dedicated section as well.
I agree. We need a section for the best SmartWatches so far.
Aye, Loki, you have my axe!
(in other words, I support a dedicated forum)
Support!
One more here to agree !!
Omate might kill me for this since I'm one of their forum moderators and an admin, but I think a development forum on XDA is a much better thing then a "special development forum"...
Reason 1:
There are too much wise noses on the TS forums who think they know it all, but over here at XDA I mostly see professionals or at least people working together more professionally...
Reason 2:
There has never been an Asus Padfone series forum over here at XDA (even though a lot of people requested it), and there has been a lot of development for this device over at my Padfone community, but I know there would be a lot more development if the Padfone would've gotten it's own forum over here a XDA... So to make the TS (or any other Umeox watch since they're pretty much all the same, except for the exterior) a great success, proper development is required!
So +1
Agree
And as an avid reader of this forum and member since 2007 (when xda-dev was for xda's only), I support this request.
