Hi Folks,
My apologies if this has been covered before. I was unable to use the forum search and after 3 hours of reading and tinkering, I haven't gotten very far.
I have a fair bit of flashing experience with multiple devices and was under the impression that the Tmo G2 is very easy to flash.
I have a new Tmo D801. The version on the phone when received was 4.4.2. After much scouring of XDA, I found I needed to go back to 4.2.2 to root, flash TWRP and put a new custom ROM down. After more scouring, I managed to use the TOT method of downgrading the Android software to 4.2.2 and that was successful. I used IORoot to root the device, but per many instructions, I never saw the recovery menu. I have tried multiple ways to boot in to recovery. When doing a command line "adb reboot recovery", the little android with the blue wire frame shows up briefly and then the phone goes to the LG icon, then in to the stock 4.2.2 firmware.
What am I doing wrong? I've read through a number of threads including the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701799
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
I haven't taken the OTA that keeps coming up on the phone.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I got this figured out.
I downloaded an older version of TWRP and installed via Flashify in the OS. Once that was installed, I upgraded TWRP to 2.8 and went through the whole process of upgrading to kitkat, re-rooting, installing AutoRec to get TWRP back on, upgrading TWRP and installing a new CloudyG2 ROM. Everything seems to be working great.
This thread was incredibly helpful:

So after having my HTC Incredible for years and never having a problem rooting and installing custom roms, I recently purchased an LG G2 from Verizon and have had nothing but problems getting a custom rom on it. I am currently trying to install Malladus and have been through multiple writeups for rooting, installing TWRP and flashing a new ROM. Everything seems fine until I'm in TWRP and have finished the install of Malladus,LG apps and gaps when it says "your device does not appear to be rooted. install supersu now?" I am rooted and have confirmed it in IOroot and Flashify before attempting anything. It then hangs on the LG boot screen indefinitely (I fell asleep and it was still there when I woke up) I managed to use Flash tool to get back to stock and read through everything again to make sure I was doing things right and then tried again. No difference, I"m stuck on the LG boot screen again. I read up on others having this problem and found nothing of any real value besides conjecture and "I tried again and it worked".
I always try to figure this kind of thing out by myself and hate not being able to do it this time but I'm at my wits end. I'll list my process below and any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I was on the OTA when I tried this process first and on the shipping version when I tried it the second)
1. Used IOroot to root the phone using this video a video I'm not allowed to link (search How to root your LG G2 by zetatango, Root was verified like in video)
2. Installed Flashify and put TWRP image in download folder and flashed it (Malladus, LGapps and gapps were placed in download folder as well), after it was finished booted into TWRP with no issues
3. In TWRP did thier standard wipe (not advanced) and then installed Malladus, LGapps and gapps
4. TWRP informs me of this "your device does not appear to be rooted. install supersu now?" On my first try I clicked yes on second I hit no to the same outcome
5. Stuck at LG boot screen and now have to go through process of using Flashtool to get stock again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Just got my T-Mobile G2 a few days ago and have been looking around at the different ways of rooting it. I know the T-Mobile variant is harder to root and run a custom ROM on because IORoot doesn't work on the KitKat OTA, so I haven't updated it yet. Right now the phone is running the D80110C firmware.
What I'm asking for is a way of being able to get the phone to the point where I can flash any 4.4.2 ROM compatible with it (even if it needs patches). Looking at both dr87's guide and utesred's guide, I'm thinking I need to take the following steps:
1. Root the 4.2.2 D80110C firmware (currently on the phone) with IORoot.
2. Install latest version of TWRP. Need suggestions on how to do this.
3. Reboot into TWRP, wipe everything (minus internal storage), flash SmiLey497's 4.4.2 ROM and the SU file. I gotta do this all in one go or it will complicate things.
4. Reinstall TWRP using AutoRec.
5. Go on to flash something like CM11 or Mahdi-ROM.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
EDIT: Alright, I got it! Just followed my guide and the recovery install method suggested by XxZombiePikachu and everything worked great.
Can anyone assure me that this will work? Or even share a quick run down of what they did? Thanks!

that is all correct also install recovery guide
Ok, everything's rooted and running just fine! Installed CM11 and the KitKat modem with rotation fix.
For anyone who finds this thread in the future, here's the zip of stuff you need to flash TWRP the first time, just make sure to pick up IORoot25 as well, since that's what I used to for the adb. Second time around (once you have the rooted KitKat LG ROM installed), use AutoRec. Here's a link to the KitKat modem you might need if you flash a ROM and auto rotate doesn't work.
I'm not responsible if you screw up your device. This all worked for me, so I'm just sharing the steps for prosperity. Make sure you ready all the threads and guides I linked or mentioned, use OEM cables, use a USB 2.0 port that is actually connected to the motherboard in your PC (not a hub, pass-through, or front case port), as well as being focused at the task at hand. Disabling your anti-virus might help too, used to have to do this when rooting older phones, so it might still be necessary.
If this does work, have fun with your newly rooted LG G2 D801! :good:
I have a LG G2 D802 international SIM unlocked version. I purchased it from Amazon UK and currently I was using it in INDIA.
The phone came with KITKAT 4.4.2 pre-installed in it. I rooted the phone using Cloudy's method of Autorec by downgrading my kernel.
The phone was rooted successfully and I was on stock rom. I also installed TWRP recovery successfully.
The problem arose when the phone automatically started updating today. It downloaded a new software version of size 139MB(approx) and promised to enhance APPS(only). I was not aware of the fact that this shall not be done and I agreed to update the phone. As soon as the phone restarted it automatically booted into TWRP recovery. Since then it keeps on rebooting into TWRP recovery mode, whenever I reboot it from TWRP recovery.
I tried wiping data, formatting data, system everything I could get my hands on. Nothing worked. The sad part is I did not take a back up of my stock rom. Now, I have lost all my data and the phone just wont boot into system. What do I do now? Can anyone please suggest me something? I would be really really grateful.
If I have posted this in the wrong section or violated any of the rules in the forum, I beg moderator's pardon.
Update: I am extremely sorry for not searching the forum (Since I was not aware of the term OTA) . I found this guide and it helped me. I finally can boot into my phone

I finally can rest in peace.
hello all,
I own lg g2 with updated 5.0.2 lollipop stock rom. now after a while that the phone is getting stuck all the time I finally decided I wanna move to cm 13.
so after working half a day on rooting, I finally succeeded, but now after another two hours of working I can't find a way to replace the recovery.
I tried lots of different ways (adb ways with loki, or flashing with flashify/rashr) but after successful flash and reboot into recovery I got error and the recovery couldnt start.
After some research I found out that I need to unlock my bootloader (something I done long back with my nexus 5), but I couldnt find any method of doing so, because all the methods I found was for the kitkat stock rom.
and worse of all I think I cant even downgrade because Im with the dead end lollipop...
so I would like to find out how can I manage to replace my phone's rom? in which part am I wrong?
have you tried to use AutoRec? it does the process automatically and works on stock lollipop. get it here only root is needed for it to work.
It's been a while since I unlocked my mobile's bootloader, following the steps of a you tube video specifically from the Tecnocat channel. Everything was going well until I thought I did not have any system because whenever I started it it went straight to recovery. Install roms and the same. Until I decided to go directly to the bootloader and start it from there. Of surprise it worked, there was no problem with the system. Everything works fine, but every time I turn off the phone and turn it on it starts in recovery and I have to boot it in fasboot mode and from there start the system. It's tedious, and for example I can not do restarts. I already reprimand the recovery from different sources, and I can not find a solution. Please help
Similar issue
I'm having a similar issue except mine started after mistakenly installing a OTA update (Sept. I think) on a xt1687. Rooted (magisk) with TWRP recovery on stock ROM. Every time I boot it goes into recovery mode, and the only way to get into the phone is through TWRP Reboot > Bootloader, then Start.
I tried flashing the latest stock ROM I could find, but still have the same issue. Only now I'm getting nagged with Install System Update New Version NPNS25.137-93-18. I know better now to follow the OTA update guides, but how do I get the phone back to the way it was before the update? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
