This is a Networking question. Unstable Internet connectivity can be caused by so many things that's it's almost impossible to pin point the cause with a simple 'fix' for a phone. Unless you're willing to sift through all your LAN device configurations to see how traffic is being handled and routed, then a solution will be hard to come by. Try asking this question on a Networking Forum.

Hi All,
I have searched the forums but can't find anything on my specific issue. I used to have an XDA Orbit and if I connected it via USB I could use my PC's internet connection. Is there anyway I can do this with my shiny new G1. The reason I’m asking is I have bugger all reception at work and the Wi-Fi is located in another building, which is too far away.
Please help!
Hi,
My above post has been moved here but im not trying to connect my pc to the internet using my phone, im trying to conect my phone to the internet through my PC.
As far as I can see this post does not apply to my question, can somebody please help? I can't be the only one this applies to!
If the computer has wifi and is connected to the internet through wired network it can be done...
Is this your case?
My work PC doesn't have Wi-Fi. My home PC does though.
All I want is for my G1 to be able to use my computers internet conection via USB. My old XDA Orbit used to be able to do it via active sync.
i.e I can surf the web on my phone using USB connection as the access point
Any ideas?
As far as I know this probably will not work, but you can try reversing the port forward technique with ADB

Why would you want to surf the web through the phone when you have a PC on the other end of that wire which does the same thing, but better?

Several reasons that i can think of
1? Bad reception indoors, so i can waste time at work by downloading useless apps on my G1, and everyone thinks im working.
2? My cell provider charges me for internet bandwith usage (per kb/mb), im cheap and don't wanna pay them.
3? I'm a massochist, and enjoy using the G1's browser more than firefox(bleh!)
4? I'm running out of reasons now
All this hypothetically could be hypothetical.
Yup, im bored at work
Exactly, item 1 sums it up. I have no reception at work so if I have a data connection I can get email notifications and test out my apps. I can't believe no one else is missing this feature. On my xda I had it set up to sync with my various email accounts etc. It wouldn,t be a problem if tmobile's reception wasn't so poor!
I would assume it is possible but would have to forward ports from your computer to the phone, similar to how the thetherbot app forwards ports from the phone to the computer. But I may be wrong that could be a one way street for data.
Wow...you are a masochist As much as I like the browser on the g1 compared to other phones..I just don't see why you'd always want to use it instead of a PC
I don't want to surf the web on the G1 when right infront of me I have a PC. I simply want it to have a reliable data connection when I'm at work. As I have no signal from t bloody mobile and no wifi!
Nobody made a sync application similar to MS ActiveSync?
Why would we make something that is already built in?
ohh forget it. Your obviously not reading what i've written.

No you obviously haven't paid attention.
Why would we create something to sync our phone to our computer when it does it all OTA. On top of this how did you expect it to sync our calendar and such when it is all proprietary?
What exactly do you want "sync'd"?
And once again... I am sure you could figure it out if you read up on adb forward commands.

As my first post says I have no reception at work at all, this means I go all day without being able to sync my various email accounts etc. I would also like to be able to demo what our device can do to my collegues. unfortunately i don't understand adb or indeed know what it stands for and as I have no programming knowledge i thought I would speak with people that do.
I will try to figure it out for myself and post my findings here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks it would be useful.
I'm also looking for some solution to use my Laptop's internet connection on my G1 via USB. The reason for this is I have a very weak neighbors wifi and only my Laptop can connect to it. I am writing android apps that need to connect to the internet.

you could set up an adhoc connection on the computer and connect to it on the g1 then bridge the networks
unfortunately my work PC does not have a Wi-Fi card so this wouldn't work. damn it whys it so complicated!?! :-(
You could just buy a router.

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.

Hello guyz. I need some help.
I want to use internet on my lappy via sgy. I have tried usb tethering & creating portable wifi hotspot but using them, the internet disconnects frequently (specially with usb, the connection gets lost or doesn't respond).
So kindly tell me a way to fix these issues or some other way to use internet (like by using bluetooth)...
NOTE: I am on HSDPA network.
try foxfi (playstore)
and next time remember questions go in the Q & A Section NOT general section!!!!
Any other way...
Oh sorry for posting in the wrong secrion. I have tried that foxfi app too but the disconnection problem persisted...
Is there any other app or a way to use internet via bluetooth??

Easytether, the easiest app for tethering i've ever seen it works well, i used it in college to bypass the proxy, this way i was able to play Quake Live in class during exams ^^"
You must have Data of course

lately i found that this functions still connects the devices but i have no internet access for the laptop ,while the phone works perfectly.
looks like i have an IP but the DNS is not working - im not sure.
can anyone address me to a working solution?

is it your first time you are trying to tether from this phone?
Additional info
Hi Friends,
i have been using this feature a lot from the moment i got the device without any problem.
i also tried to connect it to other devices the problem is the same, some issue with the DNS address resolving .
do you know a tethering app that doesn't requires a root?
Just got a V20 from AT&T and loving it so far. I'm trying to get usb tethering to work (I want to pick up wifi with my phone and then use usb to get it to my computer). It works through data but not wifi, I keep getting an error that says there is a temporary network problem that is preventing the enablement of usb tethering function. Do I really need to root my phone to fix this? If someone could atleast point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it, I've googled quite a bit and can't find a clear answer.
Maybe other AT&T customers can jump in... but I believe they want you to pay to use your phone as a hotspot. Verizon is the same way.
I'm pretty sure you'd need to root to get around that... if you could.
Is it still considered a hotspot if I'm using it through usb? I dont understand why AT&T would expect payment if Im going through my own internet and not using data. And if I need to root how would I go about doing that? Sorry for the noob questions but I've never done this before and all the threads I've read confuse me more, I'm not sure what I do and dont need
I could never find a good way to do this on other devices, even with root. I've spent a lot of time on a solution on this in the past, and I don't think it's something that's easy to do. Have you been able to do this with a different device?
Also, are you on an unlimited AT&T plan? I've heard that just about everyone on that kind of plan can't use tethering. Sleazy, I know, but they're trying to pressure people into having any reason at all to switch to a tiered plan. Kinda like this!
Regardless of what plan you're on, I don't think that USB tethering option will do what you want. It's very restricted in that it needs to be using your mobile data. Back when I had a rooted phone, I could never find a way to do what you're trying to do - using the phone as a network adapter. But I can almost guarantee you, whatever solution you find is probably going to involve root.

You can't yet root an AT&T phone because the bootloader is locked.
If you're trying to set up an OTG arrangement, that should work. I haven't seen much discussion here about OTG. With the micro USB ports on older phones, you needed a special OTG cable. I'm not sure about the USB-C port whether a special cable is required.
But if you're trying to use your phone as a modem or a router, I believe your carrier has you by the short and curlies.
---------- Post added at 08:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:34 PM ----------
I don't know if your phone will have this option. I don't know if it'll make your phone do what you want it to, but here goes.
Settings>Developer Options>Select USB Configuration>RDNIS USB Ethernet.
It's all I've got.
So you pretty much want to use USB tethering, but instead of using data from rmnet_data0, you want to tether data from wlan0?
If you want to use tether with AT&T while on a unlimited data plan just install pdanet+ on your phone and computer. It also has a feature to create a hotspot from your laptop. Until we have root this is the best solution for tethering.

Exactly. Basically use the phone as a wireless network card. I appreciate all the help but nothing I can find has worked so far. Seems ridiculous that this isn't easy given all the other tethering options that work fine off cellular data
I don't have unlimited data... using data is not an option for me

Yeah, I'm not familiar with anything that does that. Is buying a usb wireless network adapter out of the question?
I'm pretty sure it can be done, just not easily and not without root.

This was supposed to be a quick temporary solution - just moved in to a new house and not getting internet until monday, I have this fancy new phone with usb tethering options and a friends wifi to connect to.... Figured this would be quick and easy. Especially annoying if it's true that [email protected] are going out of their way to block wifi
PdaNET should work. I've used it plenty of times using the wifi hotspot, but since Android 7.0 isn't supported with it, it does say it has to be USB or bluetooth, but it should do exactly what you are looking for. I don't know what the "unpaid" version limitations are as far as the USB connection goes - it had a timer on the wifi aspect to reconnect and things, so I just bought it and never looked back. No root required.

I don't think that is what he is looking for.
The phone has several network interfaces. Carrier data should be transfered over rmnet_data0 and rmnet_data1, wifi is transferred over wlan0, and native USB tethering creates rndis0. Now when native USB tethering is used, data from rmnet_data0 and/or rmnet_data1 is routed to rndis0.
OP wants to connect to a wireless router (wlan0) and route that data to rndis0 (USB tether). Theoretically, it should be possible but no one has done it to my knowledge. It would undoubtedly require root and I don't think AT&T V20 has been rooted yet.
Ah, my bad. I mis-read the initial post thinking he just wanted to USB tether his computer in the standard data fashion. In that case, I got nuttin.
