Dear All,
I am to make an app that gets SMS messages from an own sqlite SMS database and copy them to the phone's SMS database. It also has to check for duplicates (if an SMS is already copied, it should not be added again even if you try to do so). The app has to run on a Nexus 5 phone (having the latest android version installed, Lollipop). If not possible, it can be run on a Jelly Bean phone (Android 4.3).
I got no clue how to do this. Can anyone help?
Thank you in advance for your help and time.

Well use a db helper, I'm not sure if you need root perm to get the db from /data or if you have a separate android manifest perm for it. Nevertheless you would have to read values from local db iterate it and insert it to that db present in /data. I'm not really sure about which approach to take but as far as I know this is the only way.

I don't think it's possible without root. There's no api at least nor any hack I believe

Possible to backup all the messages into a db. Using the read SMS perms. Not sure if there is a write SMS permission.

Are there any bonafide, super devs in this forum that can look into a Logcat for me?
I think this is a CM10 issue (please feel free to test for me as well and prove me wrong):
When you have LARGE amount of messages, the STOCK Messaging app cannot load them and gets stuck on the "Loading Conversations" message. If you kill the app, and go try to launch the messages via GoSMS for example, the messages don't load either...
This continues, until you reboot the phone, and then launch GoSMS or some other app than Stock FIRST! If you do launch the Stock app, the same scenario returns above!!!
My workaround: Froze stock Messaging App with Titanium Backup and using GOSMS, which sucks cause it's SO heavy with resource use, compared to stock !!
Can anyone confirm and be willing to fix this please?
NOTE: "Large amounts of messages" in my case means 47000 messages or so... I'm not sure where the Messaging apps stops working, is it 10K, 20, 30, or the 40K range that breaks it? And the device I'm using is HTC EVO 4G LTE...
ANY HELP on this would be super appreciated!! Thanks guys!
Thanks for the help guys!

Really? No one??? Come on my helpful Devs, please step forward to guide me to the right place to ask for help ?
Thanks!
I'm not a dev or know how to read logcats, but generally the SMS app starts to slow down at 1.6k messages. After that it starts to become very buggy and extremely slow. Its not possible to have more msgs as the app can't handle too many. This has always been a problem on android. I have a limit for 500 msgs per conversation. My msgs are automatically backed up as soon as they're sent and received. There is no fix.

Hello,
I have an 3G N7 and know that it can not receive / send SMS. OK, that is what was told of.
But today I got a notification that I have a message in notification bar, opened it and it looked like a regular SMS message.
Then I tested myself, I sent a normal SMS to my tablet gsm number and received it instantly. I'm on Vodafone if that makes any sense.
Build number is JDQ39 - baseband 1231_0.17.0_1205, Kernel 3.1.10-g05b777c.
Obviously this is some app inside that handles the received message, what's the app name ? location ? at least is interesting to know that at least SMS I can receive. How can I access it ?
Best regards,
Radu
Hi, i also have the same question. Anybody knows?

Download Go sms from store.
Google Voice works great on the N7 for sending and receiving sms, also. Sms works over wifi or data.
I maybe not beein too explicit.
I have received two SMS, regular kind, sent through my gsm carrier.
As i received them, means there is some app that recognise it and can handle the sms.
Question is, what is the app, how can i acces the messages received.
I'm aware of various solutions for sms that require to have an online account, in order to handle sms, do not want to use this kind of service.
Also, there is hack to install sms/mms apk by rooting, but, again this is not the object of my question.
I just want to check my incoming sms's for now.
Best regards,
Radu
Like mentioned above, if you install gosms or any other third party app it should allow you to view that text message that came through the carrier

Long press the notification and press "App Info" and that will tell you the name of the app.
Hello again,
Here is screenshot and detaild of the app.
As it says it receives SMS, but also can write SMS- see last line, in theory.
Question is, where can find this app. Looks to be hidden..

How to do so with stock mms.apk has already been covered here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34282107
Right in the N7 3G dev section. XDA search function is highly recommended

Hello Rebel,
I know the MMS.APK, saw it, thank you for heads up.
My specific question is, why should I use that, if I have an app already installed. I do get SMSs from any regular gsm phone, without being necessary to create an online account for GOSMSPRO or whatever similar. The screen shot says that I might be able to send also, on my cost SMSs. No probIem, just want to find that app that handles the SMS received. Can I do that ? can I send using same app that is ALREADY installed?
thank you for patience

So it seems the 'Simple message receiver' is an app that comes with the 3g N7. Mine is just wi-fi, so I can't check, but does your app drawer have that app? If you check Settings > Apps > All, is it listed there? I have no idea how to open it if it is not in the app drawer or if you would be able to send using it anyway. Interesting that it is included in the 3G version.

Yes. As thw thread states, they are successfully receiving and sending sms from the same app over gsm, just as you would on a phone. The only difference i forsee is doing so with a dedicated data sim, or using the sim from your existing phone.
Many are using the latter, and using other apps to forward thier phone calls to the data side, and using sms normally.

Hey download or reset the settings for the message center in your phone . When you root your phone default settings given by your provider will be lost .. So set proper values for the message center , port etc from the settings option in your stock messaging app. In India we get a service message with settings when we ask the provider for it also the settings are available in the net . Hope this helps

Is anyone having trouble with the stock messaging app stuck permanently "sending" MMS? Anyone know a fix?
If no one knows a fix for this... Perhaps someone can recommend a messaging app that works correctly in multi-app mode? I send a lot of pictures and want to be able to have gallery and messaging app open and be able to drag and drop pics into the messaging app.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Try to clear the cache for the default messaging app that will clear alot of problems. This is the first thing to do with a problem app.

Update... MMS go through fine when I'm not at home (not using wifi) but when I'm on wifi they won't go through... I'm almost certain that I sent a couple over wifi when I first got the phone last week.
Clearing the cache did not make a difference, thank you for the idea tho.

Just an FYI....MMS doesn't go over WiFi. It gets sent with mobile data.
I fixed the problem with a factory data reset ... now it will again send MMS while signed into wifi

I've had this happen a couple times. Each time I turned off wifi then rebooted the phone. Connected to 4G and sent.

Sorry to bring up an old posting, but I am still having this issue with MMS on wifi or off. I can receive them just not send them out.
Ever since I've my phone updated to the latest ROM, its been having this small issue with saying my text has not been sent. But when I click on it, my texts are clear of error. What is going on with that?
I'm not sure if this will work, but you could try it. Can you please clear the data and cache of the messaging app you use and reboot the device?

I just deleted all my texts. That surely helped.
Good to hear you solved your problem.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Free mobile app
But deleting all my texts isn't what I want to do all the time or not at all. I'd like to keep my texts for however long I like to.But I tried that method that you suggested and it didn't work. So now what? It didn't start this until it upgraded to the latest rom.
Backup and factory reset.

What am I backing up to and with and resetting to factory is going to put back at stock rom.
I found out what it was. Since upgrading to the new kit kat, it no longer supports sms messaging but it now uses google hangouts as it's alternative messaging source. So you'd have to go into settings and designate which is the default messenger. It can't be both which is why it shows that it hasn't been read. Go and clear it out of hangouts and designate which is the default messenger, which is hangouts. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks for updating us man. Take care.
