Hello,
last night i received my OTG cable. My nexus is rooted with custom kernel so I decided to transfer some files from my usb stick. Everything was fine when i plugged and played some song from flash stick but then i leave it connected for 2 hours and when i come back my nexus was dead..
I tried everything but its always black screen. My friend who gave me this OTG cable told me that micro USB connector of the cable is little shorter than normal. Is this is a problem? What you think is happen?
I saw other post with a “dead“ that come back pressing the power button for a long time (30seg+)

Ive gotten my nexus stuck like that before. What I did to fix is to hold VOL +/- and power until the screen flashes and the Nexus7 reboots then.
I got an OTG cable off ebay and it said it was good for nexus7.
PROBLEM IS...
When i plug it in nexus7 Instantly, totally shuts off.
Will NOT turn back on no matter how much i push POWER....
UNLESS i plug my nexus 7 back into it's wall charger.
Anyone ever have this problem with an OTG cable?
Are you plugging in just the cable, or are you connecting something to it? I had my N7 reboot when I was screwing with USB power and a hard drive.
Hi. First I tried it with nothing at all. I thought it killed my N7.
Than I tried it with it plugged into my six axis gamepad.
Same thing.
No matter how much I would push the power button it wouldn't go on.
Plug in my Ac adapter and it boots.
I'm using stock, unrooted.
Any setting that can cause this?
Im thinking some wires that are not supposed to be touching inside the connector are shorted.
EBay merchandise is always questionable quality. Yours is shorted - send it back to the seller. He will sell it to the next guy in line...

...or get a new one, it probably cost less then shipping.
Check out dx.com, I got 2 adapters and one cable (all OTG) from there, and everything works.
Thank you. I'll get another. I'll let you know how it goes.
Oh, I have a question.
Is there an otg cable that allows charging of N7 while using with a gamepad?

With stock kernel OTG charging will not work.
If your Nexus is rooted, you can flash custom kernel (Timur's latest mobile kernel from http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-usb-host-power-management-usb-audio/). The one from faux123 (013) will also work, but charging mode must be enabled/disabled via script. In Timur's kernel it's automatic.
Then something like this will work (I use the first one, but ordered the second now):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-Host-OTG-Cable-w-USB-power-Male-Female-Samsung-S2-i9100-S3-i9300-9220-/261161262679?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cce6c9e57
or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Left-angled-Micro-USB-OTG-Cable-With-USB-power-for-i9100-i9300-i9220-i9250-N7100-/380553042368?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item589aba99c0
Hope it helps.
OK. .I guess i will need to Root than. The reason i wanted to use the OTG cable was to not Root. But since i can't charge while playing. (without rooting anyway)
I'll root and than i'll be able to run the controller off of bluetooth and charge.
Thank you.

does anyone know if a mouse using an otg cable will work in recovery mode. cracked my screen looking for a way to flash new roms but not dont want to restart my tab because im afraid i wont be able to get out of recovery. im running m-kernel 32a with multiboot.
I don't know but if you start a new thread your bound to get way more hits and maybe someone who knows would see it.
The CABLE was the culprit. Got a new one. It works. Thanks.
bringing this one back from the dead. i have a KNOWN GOOD usb otg adapter that works flawlessly in my nexus 5 but has the exact same symptoms as the OP, it powers fully off and wont turn back on without a wall charger or battery pull.
sincei know its not the adapter what other options do we have
My nexus 7 recently started to behave weirdly, it doesnt charge while turned on, neither with USB or AC. It does charge perfectly well when turned off.
I am unable to use the USB either no device is detected, nor in normal mode, USB debugging, fastboot or adb.
Please help me to get this USB brick fixed on my Nexus 7 asap.

I've had this problem for a few weeks now and have yet to find a solution.
I'm quite astonished I haven't found a fix for this either. I have yet to open mine up ... I'm try to get the bootloader relocked, so I can warranty the dumb thing. But since it's not recognized by USB when powered on, I can't.
Have you tried putting pressure on the cable when it's plugged in? Also are you using the factory cable?
Sent from my Nexus 7(2012) that has zero issues.

Unfortunately it is a hardware failure. Most likely the USB port assembly. It is possible there is a loose ribbon cable connection.
Nexus 7 not charging
I have the same problem. My Nexus 7 will not charge when turned on. It will not now connect to my pc. I have checked the drivers and all are ok.
It happened a few days ago Its rooted. I can restore backups that are on my Nexus through rom manager, but still the same problem. I thought of doing a factory reset, but if it will still not connect to my pc. I will loose the data. If it is a hardware usb port failure, what is the next stop
I know this is going to sound strange but open up the back of the Nexus and you will find your battery... And you will notice that it's loose you have to plug or wedge it back on to the battery clip it comes loose overtime use a credit card or similar to open the case  success

Has anybody else had the same problem, if so, how did you overcome it.
Similar thing happened to me... No amount of pressure or angling of the charging port would work. Batteries ran dead as a result. Sent it to the service center and they would assess it for 2-3 days and try to repair since it is under warranty. I'm gonna get an official dock to try and save the charging port from the stress of always being in use although I know that's not the only factor at play.

That's sounds a good idea with the official dock for charging, but you should not have to do that.
To much usage of the micro usb port is going to give problems. I'm always connected to my pc, downloading roms ect. but as I said before, my N7 charges perfectly when not turned on.

I think the only answer is a faulty USB connection.
I tried to change mine and finished up snapping the connectors. :crying:
Now have one useless N7
Long story short: plugged the n7 into the car's OEM stereo USB port on a long trip and it registered as a device with the stereo and let me play some music off of it, when I woke up a couple hours later it wouldn't charge.
After a short bit of troubleshooting, I found that OTG devices were still working but it would only charge if I shut it right down - if I start it charging while it's turned off and leave the charger attached while powering it up it's not detected by the software so it never says it's charging, but does still charge - though if at any point I pull the charger from either the n7 or it's supply I have to shut it right down again to get it to charge. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of a PC USB device connection (aside from the charging part of course.)
After a couple weeks using it like this, I got my hands on a multimeter (my stuff is all packed in storage indefinitely or I'd have been replying to this topic sooner) and confirmed that I never register anything beyond a few millivolts on the detect/sense pin (which I find very odd as it's supposed to have a pull-up) with nothing attached to the usb port, and that aside from a short time in fasboot that unless the n7 is powered right off it's trying to supply 5V to the USB connector. I attempted to use the faux123 kernel that has options to disable this power to allow host+charging (and my hope was to slow the battery rundown to make it more usable even if I have to shut it off to charge it), but the n7 appears to ignore this and still powers the USB connector.
In this case it most definitely is NOT the IO/USB/headphone assembly inside the unit. At the moment I'm operating on the theory that Asus skimped on protection circuitry in the charge circuit as in my mind this type of damage should never occur when it's properly designed, and I'm presuming the motherboard dead with regards to being a USB device - too bad my warranty is likely up, though I can't check that as it was a gift and all the paperwork is buried in storage. Thankfully it's still capable of fast charging when off, though this doesn't leave me very happy as this also effectively takes away most recovery options if fastboot is the only thing left working.
If I manage to source a replacement mobo I will work on doing a post-mortem and seeing if it's down to a faulty component (I've seen this sort of behaviour before, a pulled up line not getting pulled up, when a filtering capacitor decides to go flakey.) More likely though I'll either sell it, give it away or put it on the junk pile with the rest of the Asus products I've had to retire in the last month due to their questionable customer support (the other products were due to Asus deciding they were "legacy products" and not updating drivers for windows 8/8.1 despite only being 5 years old.)

Very Interesting
I am sure you are right, but I'm not qualified to agree or disagree.
I have had quite a few Asus products in the past and never had any problems.
My Nexus 7 (2012) was also charging properly. I only have the issue that it only charge when turned off AFTER I charged it:
(1) using car charger; and
(2) charge it using official charger but inside a train using train's power plug
So it seems that these devices really need a normal wall-charging paired with official charger.. otherwise, something bad might happen..
Has anyone tried to use Wireless Charger? does it work?
Hey guys!
I picked my G2 up 5 days ago, everything was working fine on day one, however now my phone won't connect to the PC either in MTP or in PTP mode. I looked up all kinds of drivers for this device, installed everything, and it's still not working. When I connect my phone, Windows start to search drivers but does not find any. I have Windows 7 64 bit. Now I can't transfer files to the device, and also, when I try to charge via USB 2.0 or 3.0, it says the voltage level is low, so it charges only on low profile.
Appreciating any help.
Have you tried a different USB cable? That would be the first thing to do. If you're not using the OEM cable (the one that came with it), try that post haste.
If you've already done that, have you tried charging it from the wall with the OEM cable and wall socket box? Does it charge? Is it charging at normal speeds?
And finally, is your phone rooted? Does it have a custom recovery? Is it the stock operating system?
Sent from CAMACHO, my Verizon G2 (VS980) running PAC ROM.
Thanks for the fast answer.
Yes, I do use the OEM cable, the one that was in the box. I am using stock ROM, no tweaks at all. The travel charger is working perfectly, it is charging at normal speed. The intresting thing is that it was working for a few days...
I would recommend using Wi-Fi Transfer, or whatever it's called... The built in system in your Qslide Apps, and backing up everything you can to your computer that way, or backup app info (such as SwiftKey) to its respective cloud system if it supports it, then doing a factory reset.
If it doesn't work after that, try to get it replaced, it should still be within your grace period.
Sent from CAMACHO, my Verizon G2 (VS980) running PAC ROM.
I forgot to test it with another cable. Now I did it with a Samsung Galaxy W U2 cable, and it is working, Windows did automatically install the driver and the MTP is working... Interesting... The stock cable has been working for days, and it still does work with the wall charger perfectly, but not the computer.
Do you prop your phone on your chest when you lay in bed? I used to do that while charging my tablet, which also had the USB port on the bottom. It slowly bent the cable connector from the pressure of the tablet being set on it.
Perhaps you accidentally did something similar? And if so, I recommend getting a custom launcher or something that will give you full orientation control of your phone, then turning it upside down so the charger cable is on the top when plugged in.
Also, I'd take the cord to your carrier store and tell them what's going on. See if you can't get it replaced right away.
Sent from CAMACHO, my Verizon G2 (VS980) running PAC ROM.
No, I haven't charged the phone in bed like that, but if the cable was damaged, shouldn't it have the issue with the wall charger too? Because it works just fine with the wall charger.
Not necessarily. I'm no expert on that, but I imagine there are different wires in the cord for data and electricity. If the data one is busted, that would explain why your computer doesn't recognize it, but it still charges on the wall.
The low voltage error could be a play into that as well if there's some kind of handshake that happens between phone and computer that is not happening because of the damaged data line. My PS3 controller is like that, it will only charge on specific wall chargers because of this handshake feature.
That's just my opinion anyway. Not that it matters at this point, because we have established the cable itself is faulty. Which is good because that's way easier to replace than a whole phone.
Sent from CAMACHO, my Verizon G2 (VS980) running PAC ROM.
Thanks for your help.
I've seen this question pop up a while ago but it doesn't appear to have been solved. Someone mentioned that the KTManta kernal might have solved this but I couldn't find that answered anywhere in that thread (here). I am using the USB OTG cable to control an IR Droid USB transmitter in a permanent kiosk installation and I need the pogo connector to supply power so this can run 24/7.
Any help is much appreciated!
UPDATE:
Wooo!!! Just thought I'd give the kernel a shot and see what happens... it works! I have a separate USB voltage meter that confirms, as well as seeing the battery % increase while being used, and my IR Droid is also working.
Just install the above mentioned kernel, plug in the USB Y OTG cable into tablet, external power supply to the male USB end of Y adapter, and external device (mine being the IR Droid device) to female USB end. Plug second power supply (I used the 2.4a (12w) iPad charger) into pogo connector. Win.
Ktoonsez, your next few beers are on me, good sir!!
UPDATE: The latest KTManta kernel (04-06-2014) breaks root (SuperSU) with the stock rom. In my case that is v4.4.4 so I've had to revert to my nandroid backup. The issue has been known for a long while but it seems the dev is prioritizing his kernel on other devices. Obviously this means I'll not be testing any time soon.
Interesting, I've wanted this solution for a long time as I use an USB Ethernet adapter from a room with poor WiFi reception. I'll see if it makes any difference if the OTG USB device is attached to a powered USB hub or not and report back.

Oh man, I wish I knew about it breaking root before installing!! I was wondering why it was saying I wasn't rooted... Is there a way to fix root while on this kernel?
I'm having some issues with the tablets now that I didn't have before - the most basic seems that it won't boot (won't even start the Google logo) if I have both OTG device and Pogo connected at same time when the tablet is off. I did solder my own right angle tip onto the OTG Y cable though, so I may have messed something up... I'm going to be doing some more testing over the next couple days and I'll keep this up to date.
"Is there a way to fix root while on this kernel?"
The root issue with KTManta's latest release is specifically with the stock ROM from what I've read in the N10 KTManta thread. So it would seem that installing a non-stock ROM then installing the KTManta kernel would be the only way to get this kernel and root. I'm unwilling to do that for this single feature. There were comments that root was still working on an older KTManta release which if I can remember is from Dec 2013. I've no idea if that release has the charging features you see with the latest release.
If you go the custom ROM route then read the KTManta thread to find out which custom ROM's are working. Don't quote me but I thought the OMNI ROM was one that worked, please confirm that for yourself.
From my experience stock with the XPosed framework is more stable than any custom ROM and I've tried many.

So there were a few other issues that I found out while testing...
If you have USB plugged in, then reboot, the tablet freezes while trying to boot. It doesn't even get to the loading screen.
It seems a bit buggy as to when it wants to work and when it doesn't, and all the while the tablet says that it's charging so it is hard to test, but I was using a USB volt meter to see if the pogo was actually taking power or not.
The next thing I want to test is using a powered USB hub, instead of a Y cable. Has anybody done this successfully? Does it need the modified kernel? Does it ACTUALLY charge, or just say that it is?

I use a powered hub to access an Ethernet adapter while concurrently having the pogo plug attached. The result is that the tablet drains slower as the Ethernet adapter is drawing power from USB Hub rather than the tablet. The tablet does not get charged in anyway despite the false charging icon indicator. This is why your post was so interesting to me until I discovered that root was lost. I can live the charging and OTG limitations but I can't loose root.

I tried this the same way as SupremeTaco described.
My nexus 10 runs the latest Omnirom 4.4.4 with latest KTManta kernel.
I plugged in the OTG Y Cable, which was connected to a charger and a usb SD-card reader. Then I plugged in the Pogo charger and to my surprise, the Nexus 10 charges yay! (I saw the battery percentage increase as I was using device with screen on)
SupremeTaco thank you for this great tip, I have been looking for a solution for a long time. I can now charge my Nexus 10 16GB while using a Meenova reader with 64GB microSD card - which is extremely useful :good: :good:

I'm glad it helped! But be careful as you may have issues booting with the USB plugged in. Let me know if this does happen to you... it may just be the version of the kernel I was using but I gave up and am looking for another solution at this point, since I must leave the USB plugged in 24/7

Sorry for the slow response,
I did some testing with both KTManta kernel and the stock Omnirom kernel and indeed booting with USB plugged in does not work. The culprit seems to be the OTG Y-Cable and specifically the power supply part. If you disconnect power from the Y cable but leave everything else plugged into the tablet, the tablet will boot. Perhaps you could have a power switch for the Y-cable and switch it off only when booting?
Also, I have discovered that Pogo charging with Y-cable also works on stock Omnirom kernel. So it seems that the kernel does not affect the charging capability with this setup in anyway, so we are not limited to using KTManta. However the booting issue does not seem to be a kernel-related problem.
Edit: I also confirmed charging in this way works with franco kernel r16 (so it will probably work with all other franco kernels and any other custom kernel)
