Well got my Ouya today. So hoping soon to see how to do more with this or side load the apks... or better yet, have google play loaded heh.
So I am wondering how many devs we have here trying to work on some new firmware cause this system.. really could use a lil overhaul heh.
Anyone manage to get a media server player going on it yet? Wouldnt mind that ability.
My review on it as go:

There are some problems loading Google Play that devs are tying to work out with a custom rom. But as for media servers anything that works on a Tegra 3 device should also work on Ouya. I've been using Bubble UPnP and XBMC.
Well I still have to learn how to load up say Media House for upnp media server browsing, then a video player like MX Player. So much to catch up on, but yea.. this thing needs root asap. Does rooting it mess up anything from Ouyas store wise or lock anything out?
Update: Install dropbox.apk to make installing future apks much easier... also use it to store ROMs for your emulators and run it like that.
Also purchase http://www.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Keyboard-Multimedia-Handheld/dp/B004716NFE which is what I just hooked up to my Ouya, makes life easier in terms of a keyboard!
UPDATE: I started this thread in March when I couldn't get the TiVo app to work on my Note 3. I haven't had that issue recently, but I received an update to the TiVo app on 9/30/14 introducing more features, including streaming. However, it has been reported that the TiVo app does not allow streaming on rooted devices. I am updating this thread to reflect a new purpose: overcoming the blocking of streaming content on rooted phones.
Previous content below
===================
I just got a Galaxy Note 3, and the official TiVo app for android won't connect anymore. On my previous phone (S3), which still works on WiFi, it says my TiVo box is "Ready" and I can just tap it to connect to my box. Same goes for my wife's Note 2. We both have the Verizon flavor of the phone.
On my new phone, it says "Not complete" and prompts me for my Media Access Key. I have entered it a BUNCH of times, so I'm sure I'm getting it right... but eventually it tells me it could not connect ("Box Not Responding"), and offers to retry. (I've even copied and pasted the MAK from the working unofficial app -- more on that below -- so I'm 100% sure I'm typing it in correctly.)
Since I have edited the DPI on my phone, I have tried both the tablet and regular versions of the app, with similar negative results... though both of the apps stop me when I open them to say that the app was designed for a device with different resolutions. (Could this be a problem with connecting?) After I tap "continue anyway" the app opens as normal.
For the record, I also have DVR Commander (unofficial TiVo app) installed, and when I enter the Media Access Key, I'm able to sign into my TiVo, and use that app to the fullest extent. In other words, the unofficial app works, but the official app does not. I don't get it.
Do any Note 3 users out there have a TiVo, and similar issues? I have a Premiere XL, if that matters.
I had the same problem. Try installing the Tivo for Tablet app instead. You probably installed the phone app.

I stated in my original post that I tried both the tablet and regular versions of the app back in March, both with negative results. Since then, I've been able to consistently work with the tablet version of the app. If I remember correctly, I had to transfer a backup file I created with Titanium Backup to my new phone, and restore the settings from there in order to get it to work.
Coincidentally, I just got an update to the TiVo app this morning... and this thread was resurrected after 6 months of having no replies. The new app version is 2.0, I'm excited to try the new features of the app tonight. Maybe they finally added android support for all the iphone-only features.

Good to know... how do you know it checks for root? I haven't opened the app within range of my home wifi, so streaming hasn't been an option yet. Does it give you a notification, or does it ask for root access?
Have you tried this...?
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.devadvance.rootcloak
I haven't tried it yet, but it's my kneejerk reaction to "XXX checks for root..." If you're not familiar with the "xposed framework" then you have a little bit of reading/research to do first.
You can stream via 4g/LTE on android. When i tried to watch a show it said streaming is not allowed on a modified android phone.

Correct, it does NOT work. Funny, it worked for SoftCard (formerly Isis Wallet). Going to call TIVO to complain <LOL>. i dont know why companies like to piss people off. it took them over a year to get the android version streaming and now they do this? i hope someone figures it out. gonna check with the RootCloak people.

That's too bad. All of my android devices are rooted.
I have to ask - did you set up the xposed framework, activate the root cloak module, and reboot your phone? Did you configure root cloak correctly for the tivo app?
I've heard of apps that look for the rootcloak package to be installed, and people that have gone as far as unpacking, and repacking the rootcloak app with a different name to avoid it's being recognized. This is beyond my experience.
Report back here if you figure anything out!

I didn't know there was any "configuration" required... or available, for that matter.
I added com.tivophone.android to the list, and when I touch it, it just asks if I want to remove it. There's no configuration for the item.
I didn't try to add any "keywords" or anything, if that's what you mean... that's more advanced than I'm comfortable with... though I don't see how adding "tivo" as a keyword could affect anything else.

what ROM are you on? Stock? Custom TW?
I'm running JasmineROM 2.3.4, which is actually an S5 port. I'm pretty sure it's pre-patched to official. I can't wait to try it out tonight to see what I can see.

I hate the rules and stipulations that go along with the movie and TV industries, and all related entities.
You pay for cable TV, but have to watch commercials when you watch something live. If you want to watch it on-demand... you may not be able to fast-forward ( so that you have to watch commercial breaks). If you watch it on their website, there are mandatory commercial breaks. That is, if they're cool about it, and you have HDCP-compliant hardware. Some shows, like "Under The Dome" only give you one chance to watch or record it on cable before your only option to watch it again is on Amazon Instant Video for $X.xx per episode. Not cool.
Even TiVo... I pay $15/month, but I still see constant advertisements and offers for Bounty paper towel, and other consumer items. Now, for whatever reason... they don't let you connect an HDMI device to a device running TiVo software. I have an HDMI TV connected to my TiVo box, isn't that the same? Are they seriously trying to protect themselves from people using Android devices instead of buying more TiVo boxes for their additional TVs?
ugh...
Am I alone in being bothered by all of this?

How about connecting to download content that's on the TiVo, rather than streaming it... Is that a possibility? Isn't there a path for this on iOS?
I have a program on my PC that lets me download stuff from the TiVo (TiVo software... nothing illegitimate), but it's in TiVo format, so I don't know WTF I can do with it without converting, which is pretty hard to do.
My hope is that I can take all the episodes of Bubble Guppies that are on the TiVo, and put them on a tablet to keep my son entertained in the car or on trips to grandma's house, where there is little to no fun to be had for a small child.
Root Cloak plus with cydia doesn't permit tivo streaming either.

I'm curious if anyone has gotten gamefly streaming to work on the shield box. Tried to sideload one method but it says it's incompatible with the device. I'm going to attempt it when I get some time, but wondering if anyone else can confirm that it's possible and working or not.
I'll take the plunge, and say no way in hell. nVIDIA in their finite wisdom have blessed the Shield with its own Streaming Service called GeForce NOW. I'm less sure exactly who, or what GameFly are. But, if a second Streaming Service were ever added behind GFN. I would hope it was Steam.
That doesn't mean all is Lost however, you could still get yourself a GTX650 (Or better!*), and stream the PC client side to the Shield using Game Stream.
Or barring the rest of it ask GameFly to add support for AndroidTV, as a hole.
*AMD/ATI Does NOT count as better
Thanks for the response, but that doesn't answer my question. I have GFN and already can stream most of my library from the PC and steam. GFN has a somewhat limited library available with it's subscription compared to Gamefly's, which is available on a simple firestick, fire TV box, smart TV, or emtec box. Obviously if it works on a firestick then just about any crapbox will do.
I get it. Nvidia shield is superior, that's why I got it. I would rather install an app on the shield to try out other available technologies that isn't proprietary to just nvidia instead of buying another box just to try it. Hence my question if anyone has successfully installed the app on the shield.

Well then I take it that it's NOT in the AndroidTV NMPlayStore then. To wit my personal advice would be to sideload it. But outta personal interest is it in the Amazon App Store? If that were the case I might try sideloading the Amazon Underground App first then if you can install it there.
If not, then I would use something like ES File Explorer to copy the *.apk to a MicroSD, or USB Stick and then install it threw ES File Explorer again, on the Shield TV. Which should be simple enough, even if it was a PitA.

Hey Man, I have the same issue that you. Did you found any solution?
Thanks in advance
I was able to download it from mirror play store, and side load it. It runs, but with no navigation from the NV TV remote or game remote. But I could use a mouse and keyboard with it. I didn't get a subscription yet to see if it will work, and it probably will with keyboard and mouse, but my assumption is if the app doesn't recognize the NV game controller to navigate, then it won't work for games as well. Didn't try a PS4 or other Bluetooth controller with it yet. If you've tried this, at all. Let me know.
I have tried just about EVERYTHING that I can think of to get the Nvidia Shield 16GB console to connect to a Linux server on my network, to no avail!! (This is an OpenMediaVault server that has all of my media files on it) I wanted to link the media shares on my home server to the Shield so that Plex could reference them; but no matter what I try it always tells me the user id/password is not correct! Even when I set up guest access and select the connect as guest option in Shield it still wouldn't connect... yet if I put ES Explorer on the Shield box and try to connect it to my server as guest there it works fine and I can see the folders in ES Explorer!
To double check, I shared some folders on my plain Windows 10 box and Shield couldn't connect to those either! Is there some 'secret' option or setting I am missing? I really would like to use Plex Server on the Shield but have all my media on my OpenMediaVault server... At least until Nvidia or Plex allows the movement of all it's internal libraries to adaptable storage.
I am beginning to think that connecting to any network shared folder is 'broken' in the Shield... Anyone else having these issues? Or knows what one has to do to 'set up' shared folders so that they can be connected to the SHield?
Frustrated....
Thanks in advance.

SMB does not work for me on Synology NAS
I have my Synology NAS in a domain. I've tried everything I can think of to get smb to work with no luck. It works fine from a Windows and MAC computer. Should I switch to using NFS? I had everything working properly before I put the Synology NAS in a domain and upgraded the NVIDIA Shield. I've tried local accounts, domain accounts...nothing works. Any suggestions? I have this wide open so it can use SMB1,2 or 3. I have encryption as optional. I'm going to try and see if I can debug this with the Synology logs. I'm close to just moving PLEX to a Windows computer and giving up.

User error...sorry everyone...i had vpn, pia turned on...
Hi, the recent firmware versions seem to have some serious bugs. I posted here about a problem formatting a flash card for adoptable storage(16GB model). The Nvidia forums were gracious enough to reply to me. If you scroll around there, it seems a lot of problems including this one that you post about started with more recent firmware. As they said to me over there, it's time to start flooding the help desk with these issues so that they feel more compelled to release a fix. I use an NAS myself and have been getting by with ES File Explorer Pro, which I already have owned for a few years. But you are not alone. I will say that I still love my Shield TV though. I was one who got sick of the PC upgrade race for gaming and has relegated herself to consoles and GeForce now is like magic to me. Most beautiful graphics I have ever seen on a little console, not to mention any noticeable latency at all. I mean the graphics are rendered off-premises, but the way they take advantage of the real-time decoding of the Tegra chip is just phenomenal, to the point that a bystander that you hand a controller to would never know you were streaming.
Hi,
I have a synology nas (DS414), and I fought with it for quite a while to make it work.
trick is the shield seems to accept only one sublevel directory, so:
\\NAS\Video will work
\\NAS\Video\Movies will fail...
Hope it helps!

That is crappy but explains what I had happen. When I logged in, I could see my user folder and other readable folders. When I logged in anonymously, I was able to see just the public folder that is read-only for people who connect to my network. However, I could not browse any of them. Mine goes \\NAS\User\UserRootDirectory\yadayada

Hmm... interesting... I wonder if I set up some Symlinks on my Linux box and limited them to only one sublevel, if that would work? I'll give it a go and let you know! Thanks!!
I'm really new to the Shield after migrating from a Firestick, so I hope these questions don't seem ignorant. So much information on the internet seems more geared to Firestick, so I thought if I asked Shield users I might get a better understanding. I understand somewhat Add Ons in Kodi like Neptune Rising, Covenant, Placenta etc. Most installation references refer to installing it in Kodi.
But on the Shield I can install similar things like Terrarium TV, Morpheus TV and probably the previously mention items as an APP without installing inside Kodi. (So far I hope I'm explaining this correctly).
I guess what it comes down to is the question "With a Shield do I really need to install APPS/ADD ON's inside Kodi?
Then specifically if I wanted to use Real Debrid do I have to install it in Kodi as an ADD ON or can I install it as an APP on the Shield, and still have it work with the ADD ON's in Kodi?
THANKS !!!!
Everything the same, but much more smoother . The only difference is that you can download Kodi from the play store
