I have a smartphone with usb2 and OTG capabilities (Moto G LTE 2013).
I'd like to know how much current can be drawn safely FROM the usb port.
Is it just 100 mA?

Background:
I am trying to test how much current the Galaxy 10.1 and the Xoom can supply out of their USB ports.
With the Xoom, it could go well above 500mA without complaining.
A similar test on the Galaxy 10.1 would go up to 100mA, but for anything higher it would say "High-Powered USB device connected" and turn off all power to its USB port. I know technically you're supposed to connect as a low power device and request high power before pulling it, but the Xoom didn't seem to care.
Question:
Will the Galaxy 10.1 supply 500mA at 5V (ish) over its USB port? (Assuming the USB spec is followed and the connecting device properly requests high power mode)

I tested the Note 3 for USB 3.0 OTG connectivity.
I could not get Superspeed transfers, only USB 2.0 speeds.
I confirmed with the Charger Doctor and multiple USB devices on an unpowered hub that the Note 3 does output the full 900mA of current that a normal USB 3.0 port would. This means that the Note 3 is fully capable of outputting 900mA of current for OTG devices.
I confirmed that the Western Digital USB 3.0 My Passport hard drive (formatted to exFAT) was fully powered and provided sequential reads and writes.
However, the most I could get was 39MiB/sec, which indicates that it is operating at USB 2.0 speeds. Has anybody had success getting the Note 3 to operate at USB 3.0 speeds when using USB OTG?

Hi All
I am currently facing an issue with using a USB 3.0 Flash Drive on my N9005.
I recently bought a Kingston DTHX30/64GB from Amazon and the benchmark which I did personally at a IT Retail Shop at the mall using their AlienWare Laptop show that the USB Flash Drive is working perfectly at > 300/150 (W/R).
I bought an OTG Cable from a local online shop but the benchmark shows only 30/20 (W/R).
The only tests that I have yet to conduct is to borrow another N9005 to verify if the fault lies on the cable or my phone.
Anyone out there is facing the same issue?
Is this a firmware issue?
Pretty sure the standard OTG cables are usb 2.0 only. Need a OTG cable with the correct USB 3.0 connection.

The current USB 3.0 OTG comes from a Local Online Retailer in Singapore which got their cables from China too, but not sure if their source is reliable.
Anyways, I have ordered an OTG this time round that will be flying in to me from China. Let's see if this cable works.

The USB 3.0 OTG I personally ordered from China came today and I immediately put it to test.
The packaging and the cable is exactly the same as the one I bought from Singapore.
And the results? It's also exactly the same.
This time round, I am going down to Sim Lim Tower to get an Engineer to specially make one USB 3.0 OTG for me and I shall put that to a test. I think this will cost me like 15 to 20 USD (20 to 25 SGD)
I shall name my cables, OTG A (The one I initially bought online from Singapore), OTG B (The one I ordered from China) and OTG C (The one I get from Sim Lim Tower).
I have tested OTG "A" and OTG "B" using on my friend's N9005 and the results are the same.
The next test will be that, I will format my USB 3.0 Hard Drive to Fat32/exFAT and test using all 3 OTG cables.
Can it be my Kingston USB 3.0 Flash drive not compatible with the OTG Cable?
Please enlighten me. I saw somewhere on this forum that we need to activate USB3 on N9005 to use it?
I've been unable to get the SM-N900T to link up USB 3. I've been looking in the kernel source and doing some debugging and the USB 3 host controller isn't even registering a USB 3 device connected to the port. Just a USB 2 device. I've looked at some of the datasheets for the Snapdragon 800 processor in this phone and its not really clear if it supports USB 3 OTG, or just USB 3 MTP as a device.
I'd love to get a definative answer from samsung or qualcomm but for now i've given up on USB 3.0 OTG with the Note 3.
I too would love to hear if it is possible to get the phone to USB3 in OTG mode and not just MTP. I purchased 2 "USB3.0 OTG" cables expecting faster transfer speeds with my external USB 3.0 SSD or USB 3.0 memory sticks. No such luck.
When contacting the seller to inquire about the inability to transfer at superspeed, I was just given responses like it must be a bad cable and will issue a refund. I purchased 2 of these and both have identical transfers speeds.
Likely just get a refund as it looks like it may not be possible to switch the phone to USB3 for the OTG. Bummer.
I have a couple different cables coming today. If they both test at only USB 2 then I'm going to call it a fail.
What i really don't get is why the would put an xhci host in the snapdragon if they weren't going to support USB 3 in host mode.

I have tested with 2 different 9005 and 3 USB3.0 OTG Cable from 3 different source.
Everything doesn't work. All possible test are conducted and test results are at USB2.0 speed.
N900 N9000 and N9005
N900 is the Note 3 Neo version. It has USB 2.0 only
N9000 is the Exynos version with USB 3.0
N9005 is the Snapdragon version wiht USB 3 ports but USB 2 speeds.
I want to buy this phone as I can use an Image App to control a camera, and then copy the SDXC card to a USB3 HDD.
Could someone kindly confirm with a quality USB 3.0 OTG cable that the N9000 Exynos version is capable of USB 3

I have both a N900A and N900T rooted and running android 5.0.1 roms.
Having the same results as the rest of you, ~35Mb/s transfer speeds on usb 3.0 otg with a ssd. Quite disappointing.

What I'm wondering if this helps with the charging speed, as the wall charger doesn't seem to be with a USB 3.0 connector.

The wall charger has a 2Ah power output while a pc usb 3.0 port has a maximum output of 900mAh. If you use an USB 2.0 port it's only 500mAh.
The best way to recharge the Note 3 is to use the wall charger.

From a dedicated charger the final charging current is normally determined by the PHONE + CHARGER based on how the phone "recognizes" the charger as good/bad (and what battery level you already have + how warm the battery is) and how much power the charger can provide. I believe the max that I have seen on my Note 3 was 1800 mA (which worked with both USB3 cables but also with some good USB2 cables).
From a PC the charging current is the result of a more complex negotiation, the phone can still have "the last word" but it can not go over 500 mA on USB2 or 900 mA on USB3.
Somehow related - please note that on USB3 DATA you STILL need to MANUALLY enable USB3 mode EVERY TIME YOU PLUG TO THE PC. Even if enabled the mode will be reset to USB2 in 10 minutes and lost if you remove and plug-in again. That being said on my Thinkpad I have not seen it charging over 450 mA even when on USB3 under Win7 (but the speed difference exists, so USB3 is correctly triggered).
Also please note that the life of the battery can be heavily influenced by the charging current - the smaller the charging current the more cycles the battery will last on the very long term. Also high temperatures are pretty bad for the battery. So if you are in no hurry it is always better to charge with a small USB2 current that is guaranteed to not go over 500 mA.
Maybe I wasn't clear enough, I'm wondering if the wall charger is utilizing the USB 3.0 capability, and if there's any advantage of using the USB 3 cable over a regular micro USB cable.

No, there is not. The Note 3 has a USB 3.0 port, but it is only faster for data transfer. Charging is done at 2.0 speed, not 3.0. Regardless of what you attach it to, it charges just as fast as a 2.0 device.

What if you used a USB 2.0 cable with the 2Ah AC adapter? Would it still charge in "USB 3.0" mode and not give you a message to use a USB 3.0 cable?
I have my old 1Ah car charger and when I use a USB 2.0 cable, the phone says to use the USB 3.0 cable for faster charging.
But, looking at this pinout:

What's strange is that I have a car charger that is 1.0Ah. When I use a USB 2.0 cable, the phone tells me to use a USB 3.0 cable for faster charging.
When I use a USB 3.0 cable, the message does not appear.
But I'm thinking that the car charger can only put out 1.0Ah regardless of the cable that is used?

You have a USB qi with charging module? Qi charging pad? Pretty straight forward. Of course you'll need to have access to your USB port and it will then be blocked.

Benchmarks for ZTE AXON 7 charging via USB 3.0 type C to USB type A with a PC for USB 2.0 & USB 3.0:
Benchmarking tools used:
Ampere, PC with ASUS Z97-AR & it's USB 2.0 500mA & USB 3.0 900mA ports.
Connection mode was set to - Charging Only.
Connection method: AXON 7> USB 3.0 type C -> PC> USB 3.0(900mA 1st pic)

A: AXON 7's USB 3.0 type C port & Quick Charge 3.0 is not limited to only 500mA or Quick Charge 3.0 supplied charger speeds.
B: It does make use of charging via USB 3.0 @ 900mA for a faster charging speed.
C: On average the charging speed can be around 2x faster than using USB 2.0 500mA.
Conclusion:
A: ZTE AXON 7 makes great use of the USB 3.0 port & Quick Charge 3.0.
B: Not only can it charge much faster using a Quick Charge 3.0 charger & cable, it can also charge much faster using a USB 3.0 900mA port(& proper cable) from devices such as a PC.

I felt that at least someone should post this information on the internet. I spent hours google searching to try and find the info posted by other people with no results. I also made sure to post the same info on my Tefen's Tech Facebook page & on the ZTE community forums. This way people will be able to access the information more easily when searching for it on google & elsewhere.
I'm glad the Axon 7 has USB 3.0. I wonder why others still stick with 2.0.
