[Q] Note 4 Headphone Audio Quality - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pretty much as the title says. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Note 4 and wondering if the headphone audio quality is good. I've always noticed my Nexus 5 sounds terrible in comparison to other phones, so I'm hoping the Note 4 changes that. I use my phone a lot for music so it matters to me.

also , forgot to mentioned that , i used and tested musics quality of Galaxy S3 , S4 , Note2 and note 3 (the phones that i used) they were good also but... none of them is similar to Note 4 musics quality , i think samsung makes major changes on about Sound card (sound chip , and headphone amplifier) on Note 4 , also it made better quality of headphone from their previous models

Galaxy S4 Earbuds

Anyone tried out the new Galaxy S4 Earbuds?. If so, do they have good sound quality?, what about the bass?
I'm planning on buying a Galaxy s4, but also i want to buy Beats Tour by Dr.Dre. Just wanted to know if i should buy the beats or use the stock earbuds that comes with the GS4, they look pretty good.

They are pretty awful.
I tested mine today, they have no bass at all, when selecting bassboost in musicplayer, the volume goes down but no extra bass lol
Sound like 2 dollar earphones for music but it's good/loud enough for making a call
To make sure it wasn't the phone itself wich gave a bad sound I just tested my Sennheiser earphones as well, the difference is VERY big, i get a deep bass now when pressing bassboost and all other sound effects are well heared in my ears now
This is odd... because my earbuds have deep bass... very deep bass and with the adapt sound feature it sounds eveb nicer.
I wonder if there are different oem makers for the earbuds ?

[Q] Note 2 vs Note 3 Headphone Jack Audio Out

So, I download the same songs on both devices (same source)
I have the International Version of the Note 2 n7100
and I have the Canadian Version of the Note 3 Snapdragon
My headphones are JVC HA-FXT90 ( http://www.head-fi.org/products/jvc-ha-fxt90 )
I set the volume to 10 on both devices... and I do the snap test near the ear to see if I can here the snap
on the note 2 I can't hear the snap or claps
Note 3 I am disappointed being such a premium device with a high price the sound via the headphones is not where it should be.
ANyone else feel that way? I know there is posts about speakers etc.. but this is just about the headphone out only.

Are you complaining about the audio quality (as most people will be assuming), or do you mean it doesn't play loud enough to drain out outside noise? The Note 3 audio quality seems excellent, as you can also read in the gsmarena review, accompanied by beautiful graphs etc. The output level of the audio jack is on the low side, depending on the recording. Hope this answers your question.
Damn... yes my note 3 sound very very good.
And it is clearly superior to my old note 2, but a lot of people have a different opinion.

Yes, when using the note 2 + headphones at volume 10 it drains outside noise with my headphones
When using the note 3 + the same headphones and same track.... to get the same effect I have to have the volume at 13..
it seems the via the headphones the note 3 is not as good as the note 2

To not ruin your ears I would suggest some closed headphones or good in-ear earphones. At my office me and several of my colleagues use some inexpensive Sennheiser HD201's, which are excellent for this. I would prefer using some high end head phones, like I have at home, but the best ones are not closed (so everything can be heard by you and people hear what you are listening to).
while i agree that note 2 sounded better than note 3, it didnt do so out of the box.
i had a custom firmware with a custom kernel supporting direct control and optimization for the wolfson dac in exyos note 2.
out of the box note 2 sounded lame.
note 3 snapdragon version isnt as good as custom kernel note 2 but with a lot of playing around with equalizer it does sound good (not great though)
i should point out that i have 9 IEMs and 7 full size cans including he400 hd650 and LCD 2 (version 1) with a few fiio amps/dacs and one top end burson audio dac/amp combo, so my views might be biased.
to the OP:
root your phone and install this:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470890 (for snapdragon sm-n9005 only, exynos has a different version)
i recommend the moderate version. the audio will be plenty loud enough and speaker will be very loud as well

1 watt speaker amazing!

Totally took this phone with me to the shower and started jamming to some music, right before this I was using it with my headphones. Apparently this phone sounds better with the speaker than with the headphones. Super loud and crisp speaker lets me actually hear the music when Im showering. Good job LG..

You sure you didn't have an HTC One M8 in the shower with you? :cyclops:
All kidding aside, yes the LG G3's rear facing 1 watt speaker really took me by surprise. I kinda gave up on LG's external speaker output after owning a Nexus 5 and LG G2, both with miserable sounding speakers. The G3 has by far the best sounding single mono speaker I've heard on a phone, blows away my Wife's 5S and my friends S5. :good: Of course it doesn't stand a chance against my HTC M8, but for a single firing unit, it really rocks, very loud and clear.
+1
I hv been using navigation without connecting my G3 to the car audio and the sound is loud enough.

I bought my G3 a week ago, and placed it side by side with my Note 2, and turned on the radio on loudspeakers on both phones. Surprised by the difference in sound quality and loudness, I played the same music files and videos on both phone at the same time. The loudspeaker sound on G3 is a joke, compared to what I get from Note 2. I am sorry, but it's true.

The difference in loudness does not leave any space for opinion. Unfortunately the loudspeaker on Note 2 produces a lot, and I mean a lot louder sound than G3. If the outcome would be slightly different, I would go ahead and say "my G3" and "my Note 2". But tbh, the difference is like night and day. So my argument is universally valid for G3 and Note 2.

I hope I did not compare apples with oranges. As far as I can see, Note 2 has one speaker on the back, just like G3. So I thought it is reasonable to expect a similar speaker loudness/quality, at the very least, considering the fact that G3 is a never device.

I wonder if your note 2 is in a custom rom with a sound mod because I'm pretty sure it is so it can't be truly compared unless your running fully stock on both phone using the same music and video files then you results could be taken serious. I think that's the only way to truly test the loudness of both speakers in my opinion

Agreed, my Note 2 speaker was meh until I modified audio settings.
since the note 2 was obviously modded, then we go the modded vs modded hehe
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/guide-headphone-speaker-volume-booster-t2819821
just a volume mod, not like those bass enhancing etc etc mods i've used in the past for S3 which are surely available also for note 2.
since i only have STOCK s3 to compare and playing same music on both phones in MAX volume via loudspeaker, i already know the G3 is way louder and better than S3.
so, i went looking for comparisons for s3 and note 2's speaker.

"Loudspeaker
The Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II both scored Good marks in our loudspeaker test. The two speakers aren't tuned the same way though, the S III is louder when it comes to voice, while the Note II does better with ringtones. Their loudness is identical when it comes to music."
hence, stock note 2's loudspeaker is a JOKE(myphonemyrule's word not mine) compared to G3's.
we use loudspeaker most of the time for voice and music.
Voice, dB Pink noise/ Music, dB Ringing phone, dB Overal score
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III 75.1 66.5 75.0 Good
Samsung Note II N7100 70.0 66.6 80.5 Good

I am not sure guys, I must've been doing something differently than the reviewer. Both my G3 and Note 2 are on stock ROM. Actually Note 2 is my company phone, so it is not even rooted. I have rooted G3, but I have tested the sound while it was still not rooted. And as you can imagine, I am not happy about it, because I payed for G3, unlike Note 2. I am happy with anything about the phone, but the loudspeaker. The volume is set to max on both phones, and on Note 2 the Audio Output is set to Surround. And that's about it. I have measured the sound output using a soundmeter, and Note 2 gave me 83-87db while G3 remained at 72-77db while playing the same music file on both phones. The same goes for the FM Radio. The difference is around 10db on the output.
By the way, thank you for the mod link for G3. I will give it a try right away.
I'm pretty happy with the speaker on the g3 as well.

I'm happy overall with the loudness and clarity of the speaker on my G3. Just need something loud and clear enough to hear YouTube vids and such. I have a bluetooth speaker if I need more clarity and volume.
I think its absolutely hilarious when people come in here bashing another phones external speaker. I also have an M8. You know what? It's just 2 little freakin' cellphone speakers. People act like their carrying around an expensive home theater system. LMAO! They all really sound like poop. [emoji33] About all you can ask for is they're loud enough to hear and don't distort. The G3 fits the bill. [emoji6]

Audio on the note 4

Morning all, I've always had an android phone, more recently I've joined a well known financial firm and obtained a brand new iPhone 6 for literally nothing, which is essentially the anti Christ in my eyes, to my dismay I realised that not only was this phone everything I thought it wasn't it's also got superb battery life and is ridiculously louder than my note 4 with far better bass, my question is this, can lollipop sound be boosted, I'm currently on echo pop Rom, the audio with ael kernel doesn't work as it should by all accounts. But having owned an S3, I know Samsung phones are toned down when it comes to the audio.
My iPhone is pure stock, it's audio is amazing, both on headphones, Bluetooth and speaker volume.
All help appreciated.
@dladz IPhone? You know that santan will come for your soul tonight, right? But to get back on the subject, I have to agree on the sound, I personally think that with the same Headset the iPhone sounds better then the stock Note4. Battery life of the iPhone is the same or a little less then the Note4. Regards
My dogs names marley, weird. But I agree, the audio is superior. Samsung shouldn't hold their audio back, think they've always done that though. .
Hi, I would say that the audio from the note 4 is better than the iphone, but only when you are using google play music. This is because it is one of the few apps that doesn't use Samsung's software equaliser, The DAC on the snapdragon 805 is better than that of the iphones cirrus logic chip, plus it supports 24 bit 192 khz audio decoding on the chip. I'm surprised that there hasn't been more praise for the note 4's audio.
P.s. The Note 4 (SM-N910F) & SoundMagic E10 are a stunning combo.

I all bull****. Iphones audio quality is rubbish. No equalizers, viper audio is far superior.
Sent from the first Samsung Galaxy ever
I'm sure theres a few thread knocking around in the apps and themes section. They will probably up the default volumes by a bit by altering the default values in the system, then I would use Viper Audio, which I also agree is superior.
I literally could not believe the difference once Viper was installed and configured it blew me away.
Samsung may have a better way of decoding the audio but what good is that with a small shi**y speaker.
I think personally if you want a phone for its audio quality its HTC one all day.

Did you actually read what I wrote ? I have always hated apple. I got this phone for next to nothing, the only reason I chose it is because I've never has one, that being said I didn't start this thread to spark a debate, that's not what this is so if you want to come in here and moan on about apple and say the audio is terrible then don't, I asked a question, if you do not have an answer then kindly either remove your comment or don't write anything.
Viper audio is a good mod, as is acid sound mod too. However, at stock levels the iPhone is miles ahead. Even with the note 4 tweaked the iPhone was ahead. I haven't tried acid mod as I don't think it's available for the note 4 as of yet but besides that I think it's a lost cause.

Agree with the chip, we know from HTC that great things can be done with it, however this isn't HTC it's Samsung and the speaker is tinny and low (at stock) I just compared the two devices with the same song..please try it next time you're in a phone shop, the difference is undeniable.
Haven't used sound magic, but I do own the 910f, at least until the M9 comes out anyway.
If acid mod comes out on the note 4 I have no doubt that the audio will vastly improve, last time I used this (or even needed it) was on my galaxy S3, the audio on that phone was similarly shocking, with that mod it was one of the loudest phones I've ever heard.
On your second point. I completely disagree with it, Google play makes no difference in this comparison.
I have tried, I also use power amp which is undoubtedly the best player to ever grace android.

There are a few threads, not the one I was looking for (acid mod) but again like you said it's a terrible speaker, also if you think about it, with HTC (besides the speakers) you have an active eq, software that adapts and adapts well, that's literally what the iphone has, they also own beats now too which is essentially what the eq was on HTC devices, I'm guessing that they might have used some code from the beats software for boomsound.
With viper , as much as it may help , it's not an active eq, it doesn't mould to the music the way the other two do, neither does acid.
Louder ? Maybe. Better audio quality ? I'm not so sure.

I do like HTC for their boom sound speakers, but when I have my headphones on I'm more of an audiophile. It may be a selective carrier thing or just software variations but with play music (actually, after some testing, all non samsung audio player apps) have a much more natural and slightly louder sound. There must be some software sound enhancement trickery on the touchwiz side.
I do understand that sound is subjective, so what I hear others may hear differently. These are just my obeservations

Haven't tried that before but I did own a Z1 which i rooted, the audio for me wasn't out of this world, the iPhone still has much better audio i'm afraid, htc definitely better audio.
Sony does have some plus points but don't think the audio is better mate.

The audio quality on this thing melts my face

Picked this phone up today despite the complaints. The first thing I noticed is the sound. The included head phones sound pretty good, but on my bose head set it feels like my face is melting. I don't know what they changed between the S6 and the note 5 yet but holy cow. Keep giving it to me.
So it sounds better?

I wouldn't say I have a "golden ear" but it definitely has better high's, better lows, and more drool coming out of my mouth from the sound. So I would say yes.

the next update for the s6 and the edge has the audio improvement update in it
Totally agree...i use Gear circle and Gear level U wireless buds and the sound is amazing and so much louder with my note 5 compared to my Note Edge...love it
Any idea if the boosted headphone sound works for bluetooth enabled headphones like the JayBird X2?
what about the call quality? In ear speaker loudness, loudness over speakerphone etc. I don't understand why these things are always almost not mentioned in any reviews, it is a phone first of all, right?
I also noticed that the sound in my via Bluetooth is much louder and clearer. I'm very happy with it.

yes the new note five will be running a higher bit rate for audio which will make audio sound better. More so if you have higher quality music files. Makes me happy you posted about this because I heard about the improved audio and now I know its true if others are posting about it
The.sound is excellent

Yes just got my Note 5 yesterday also and did some testing between my iPhone 6 plus and LG G4 and the Note 5. The Note 5 is definitely the clear winner. The LG G4 is definitely sounding compressed, not sure why LG did this as the LG G2 had superb audio and was known for that. I honestly think the king now is the Note 5! ?

Anyone comparing the sound to the S6 or S6 edge? I have the S6 edge and the audio quality is not good, especially over bluetooth. Using the bletooth in my car or over my bluetooth speaker sounds hissy and pretty terrible while the same car and speaker sounded great with the htc one m8.

I agree with everything you said and I had those same devices. The only one that comes close to the Note 5 for me is the Sony Z3+, but I have so many complaints about that device that I'm not going to keep it. Anyway, my findings match yours and I couldn't be happier.

Not sure if this helps you since I don't use BT, but with IEMs via the headphone jack I find the Note 5 to be warmer and fuller sounding with less emphasis on treble like the S6 Edge I have. Also, while I initially thought the "UHQ Upscaler" was going to be a gimmick, it adds a surprising amount of punch to the audio! Overall, I'm like a kid in a candy store with this thing. I should also mention I use several high-end pairs of IEMs (Sony XBA-A3, MDR-EX1000, Dunu DN-2000j, etc.).

Sound is noticeably better but after using m8 and Nexus 6 nothing to write home about

Why must Samsung insist on putting the speaker grill on the side where it covers it up.
Love the audio quality I am so happy. So happy.
The UHQ setting is actually enabling 192khz hardware output on the audio chip.

hey buddy you seems like an audiophile....do you think note 5 sound matches those of some dedicated players like fiio x3 ?
and do you know exactly what is done internally when we switch on the UHQ Upscaler ?
and do you or anyone knows what DAC is used this time in Note 5 ?

Hi there - I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate a good, quality output. I actually haven't used a dedicated player; the most I've done is got an E17 DAC/Amp for headphones, but it wasn't worth the trouble for me personally.
The DAC is anyone's guess, but it should be Wolfson (as were most, if not all the Samsungs before it with Exynos processors).
Cheers,

I haven't tried the E17 with the Note 5 yet, but I suspect it will only make it louder. I'll give it a try tonight. E18 would be the better choice for the Note 5, but oh well
