Anyone know if it is possible to stop the screen dimming just before it powers off? after a few recent ROM flashes it flickers when dim.
Note: this is nothing to do with auto brightness / screen timeout / Airview / Hardware fault or any settings that I can find.
I appears to be a system default that cannot be changed.
I am hoping that something in Build.prop or whatever can be altered, to either remove the dim completely or have the dim not go as low.
When battery is low or when turning it off?
And I think this is more kernel than rom related.
Never mind

Neither, it flickers as the dimmer comes on just before auto screen timeout blanks the screen.
only started a while ago after ROM/Kernel flash.

Hi,
i have a problem with my three days old HD. Besides the fact it seems to be much slower than it should be, the problem is the screen goes dim after a while. I'm not talking about it going black after a while, like it's supposed to, but in normal working mode it just kinda becomes darker, kinda like notebook screen goes a little dim when you unplug it from power. When i turn it on, it looks ok, but after a while, mostly after it first time goes black due to inactivity, the screen looks dimmed, no matter what i do, and after a few minutes it returns to normal, without any apparent reason, kinda random. At first i thought it might be something in HDTweak, so i did the factory reset, but it's happening again. Any ideas?
Try disabling the light sensor. It is supposed to adjust the screen brightness automatically, depending on the external light conditions. You can disable it in 'Energy', under Start -> Settings.
Well, it sort of works. When i disable the light sensor, i get the screen for adjusting the light on battery and AC. When i adjust the slider for battery, the screen lights up and it's ok. But, the moment the device locks itself (via HDTweak setting, the only thing i adjusted in HDTweak, it dims, and when i unlock it, it's still dimmed. Then when i again go into light sensor setting and press on the slider, it lights up. I don't understand what's going on. Faulty device maybe?
Also try changing the settings in the advanced tab.
Adding a minute or reducing a minute here seems to kickstart the device - and the annoying screen dimming goes away.

I have set my S4 up so that it runs at 100% display illumination when charging. No autobrightness.
What is bothering me know is that the screen dims to about 50% very quickly after I stop touching the display and jumps up to 100% while I touch it.
Toggling smart stay doesn't change anything. Smart stay on doesn't help even when I look at the display (though it should just prevent it from going off .. not from dimming if I understand correctly.
I would like to display to stay at 100% when charging .. or at least set dimming to "after 15 secs" or so.
What needs to be done?

I was reading about that and i found something about the chipset SnapDragon has an inside feature to adjust the screen brightness independently of the software (firmware on this case). Maybe you are watching that effect..

There is a small tool that fixes it: "Caffeine" .. obviously
Intelliscreen also does the trick .. and there is a timeout you can set (not sure if it messes up the timeout for regular use when not charging though).

Is not the solution because caffeine prevents from time up screen brightness but it doesn't prevent from cpu feature. Even if the screen is always wake up and the autobrightness is off, the brightness will be changed because the chipset.

Could this be related to heat? With the screen on and charging + what ever other task you have the S4 doing it may be the S600 is governing the screen to reduce heat... just a theory like.
I'm having the same problem too.
If i unlock the phone the screens dims to about minimum brightness.
I can touch the brightness bar to make it brighter and it stays that way for as long as i don't lock the phone
If i lock the phone and unlock it again the screen dims again?
Tried all different settings bur nothing helps...
Very annoying....
Yesterday i bought and installed lightflow to control my led indicator.
Just a minute ago i removed the app and voila! No more screen dimming!
Damn, really love that app but rather no led control than having my screen dimmed to the lowest possible brightness.
Great phone but, it appears to be a bug with the screen dimming.
Regarding settings, I have everything turned off. Adapt display is off. Auto-brightness is off. Auto-adjust screen tone is off also.
I know Samsung displays dim if the phone overheats but my phone will auto-dim even if the phone is cool.
What I've found out is that the phone will only dim "permanently" when the screen is about to shut off.
For example: Set the screen shut off to 30 seconds and around the 28 second mark, the screen will dim for a couple of seconds before it shuts off. This is where the auto-dimming will "permanently" kick in. When the screen dims at the 28 second mark for a second, i'll touch the screen so it doesn't shut off. But by this time, the screen has dimmed already and won't go back to the regular brightness. I have to lock and unlock the phone for the dimmed screen to go away.
This scenario has happened every single time. Extremely annoying.
Anyone else experience this?

Seems like software problem, do you use custom roms? kernels? maybe any app that could control ur screen? try to do hard reset.

Using stock Kit-Kat 4.4.2
No other strange apps. Ughh hate to have to do a hard reset. Just set this thing up yesterday brand new. :crying:
Have the exact same issue but it only happens some times very strange.

Yes, same here. It happens alot. Not every single time, but alot of the times.

Hi
As the other user said it might be the software bug.
Please try this app. Disable your auto brightness and install this software https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitocassisi.luxlite
This lite version is free. Try this. If everything works, you may consider the paid version to support the dev guy...
Running the Alliance rom, clean install on stock slot. No other major issues that I can think of. I've got it set to maximum brightness, not on auto dimmer. When the screen dims after 30 seconds or so, when its about to turn off due to inactivity, half the time when I tap the screen, it recovers to full brightness. The other half the time, it gets a little brighter than the dim mode, but not much. It stays way dimmer than the full brightness setting that I keep it on. I have to pull the notification bar down, slide the dimmer down, and back up to maximum, and I'm good to go until the next time it does it. Which could be in 30 seconds when it dims again.
Anybody else having this issue?

I have the same thing happening. Personally I have been too lazy about it to check through settings to see if I've done something. I'll check on it and see if I can find a fix.
*Update*
I've checked through all my settings and can find nothing that might cause it. I don't have Auto Brightness set, nor do I have Auto Adjust Screen Tone turned on. I saw nothing in the Alliance Settings either. I believe it is a system setting that is probably buried in code somewhere (far beyond my knowledge).
**Update** I reported the bug in the Alliance Forum.
I tend to agree. I've looked through settings, etc. just as you have, to no avail. I'm nearly certain it's done it since install, so I don't think it's something that I've changed. But I could be wrong. I've also tried it with auto adjust turned on, does the same thing. Auto adjusts to a dimmer setting sometimes
I'm having a couple issues with my nexus 4 after upgrading manually to Lollipop with the system image from Google Developers.
Sometimes, when the screen goes idle and turns off automatically or when it's turned off manually using the power button, the screen flashes on a higher brightness and shows the lockscreen before turning off. (I'm guessing the desired result is that the lockscreen should appear 'on screen' after the backlight is completely off).
What this causes is that when turning off the screen, the screen dims with the animation (fade to black and turn off), but before (and sometimes after) the animation is complete, it flashes for a few milliseconds displaying the lockscreen/background, even when locking the phone inside an app.
I could upload a video of the issue at a later time.
This bug didn't happen on any version/rom that went through my phone (many stock, many custom). Although I haven't tried installing another 5.0 ROM / AOSP.
The update also brought back a [hardware?] issue this Nexus 4 unit also has had since I got it. When dimming the screen using the brightness slider, sliding to the lowest setting turns off the backlight completely (effectively making the screen pitch black instead of dimming). This issue has been reported before and I was using Gravitybox to override the system lowest brightness level. Could these two issues be related? (Note that this issue didn't trigger this behavior before).
This issue has been reported by other users here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/zero-brightness-t2168071
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/problem-nexus-4-brightness-t2052857
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvgt17sKQsU < this shows the screen going pitch black at lowest brightness, it happens either from the widget, the slider, and the option in settings.
Any ideas on why it happens or how can it be corrected?. Do you also have this issue?.
Many thanks in advance.
