[Q] Help picking ROM - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys its been a few years since I last had a android phone so am a little out of touch. I have a stock S5 and i am finding that I keep running out of memory when using apps like GOW. Can someone please suggest a ROM that removes all the bloatware and has a low memory footprint?
Thanks all..

Sorry if this is a noob question, but could really use some help.

Instead of waiting x amount of days for a response, why not read the changelog of a few ROMs and figure it out?

Try this one

Thanks mate, this one does look like what I was after! I'll try this one this weekend..

So I have been trying to flash this rom but it does not appear to be working for me and I can't work out what stupid mistake I am doing.
I have copied the ROM to the SD card and then factory reset my phone, then I select "apply update from external storage" browes to the ROM.zip and apply. The phone reboots but it just has the same stock ROM that came with the phone (ie I can still see s-voice etc).
I have downloaded the Modem and Bootloader for my model but have not used ODIN is so long I can't remember how to do it all from there.
From memory it's this:
G900I-DVU1ANG3-BOOTLOADER.tar.md5 -> Bootloader
G900I-DVU1ANG2-MODEM.tar.md5 -> Phone
XtreStoLite_ROM_v1.5_XXU1ANG7.zip -> PIT
CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltedv-smg900i.tar.md5 -> CSC (or is this region code?? can't remember)
Auto Reboot -> Yes
F. Reset Time -> Yes
But I am probably wrong so I am hoping someone can confirm it for me..
My phone already has a recovery, but I can't remember which one (I think I used CF root before)..

You say you're 'stock'.......is that stock ROOTED, or stock UNROOTED?
If UNROOTED, you need to root first, which may or may not trip knox depending on how you do it, then you need to flash a custom recovery (Cwm, twrp or philz) which WILL trip knox, and finally use the custom recovery to flash the rom........

I ahve installed TWRP and it appears to be working. Thanks!

[Q] Been trying for hours. Please help.

I had to post. Its 5:21 and I need sleep. I tried updating to amdl on my i337. I never updated the modem when it came out and I was running an odex 4.2.2 google rom. I was unable to root my phone using an odex Google edition from the i9505 which I lokidoki'd. It was 4.3 and I was able to upgrade, but nothing and I mean absolutely nothing will allow a root. I also just updated to mf3 which I didn't mean to do (hit the wrong file in cwm) after doing everything I could with my amdl. I reverted to amdl and tried forever. The binary won't install and it wouldn't before mf3. I looked everywhere. Root methods for both basebands. I tried all of them short of ones that will brick me. Any input would be great. I'm glad to be on 4.3, but I NEED root. I'm not a pro, but I've been doing this stuff long enough to know what I'm doing. If you think of something even moderately complex, I've probably done it. Somebody help...

You're making this way too complicated.
1. System Settings --> About Phone
2. Activate Developer Options by tapping "Build number" several times
3. System Settings --> Developer Options --> Root Access --> Apps and ADB (or Apps only, if you prefer)

It was already enabled. There is nothing about root access in my Dev options. All I get is that superuser cannot update the binary. I've tried motochopper and just installing supersu through cwm. The old version of it gives root access but it never sticks and keeps asking and as soon as it updates it tells me that it can't install a binary on 4.3

Huh. OK, let me get a little more info. First off, you never did the OTA MF3 update, correct? As in, the Loki exploit still works on your device?
Also, when you say, "I tried updating to amdl," and, "I also just updated to mf3," do you mean firmware versions or just modems(basebands)? It seems to me that you mean the latter, because your screenshot is still showing the 4.3 Google Edition firmware.
If this is the case, it sounds like you have not tried a full wipe and re-flash of the rom. Is this true?

Tried a wipe. Tried another rom just like it. Nothing. And yes just the basebands. I'm running AMDL right now on kangabean. It's all good. I like the rom a lot actually. I got Wallet working which was big for me. Just slightly disappointed at the deodex. Would prefer an odex rom. Oh well! Thanks for your help everyone I appreciate it.

[Q] Should I root? Considering...

Hey!
So yeah Iv'e been root-phobic ever since I bricked my old Ace Plus back in the day, and Iv'e been satisfied with non-root for a while.
But now the advantages of root are tempting me to go back. Iv'e always hated the fact that you can't disable the camera sound and the bloatware takes necessary space, and let's not forget all the apps that have special root features.
The thing is I'm ready to root again but then I realized rooting would change my phones status to "modified," and I won't be able to update my firmware. And that's a no-no since I'm expecting to ( hopefully ) get 4.3 soon.
So my question is: If I root, remove all the c**p I want to ( camera sound, bloatware ), and then unroot, will my phone status still be modified or will the unoot send it back to normal, so I can update? I hope it does! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks!
I think once you root your phone it will stay modified forever, but still, having a rooted S3 is so much better, i have 4.4.1 with CM and its something that I think will never come to our S3, so..
I rooted mine two weeks before I bought it, ****ed it up and fixed it many times...
The choice is yours to make
Yes you can go back to official status even after rooting and flashing custom roms multiple times.
This can be done by resetting the flash counter via Triangle Away and flashing a stock Rom.
Check your Build version and CSC now by dialing *#1234#
Better yet download from Samfirmware your current firmware in case you want to go back to it later.
Also you may want to look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42568033
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33817354
Also it's a good practice to backup your EFS, if you're still on efs v1, and keep it in a safe place like your ext sd card or your PC before flashing another Rom or firmware.

as far as i know, and that can be wrong, if your android is untouched (no root or anything else (like xposes framwork)) you will get the update over the air.
BUT if you don't there are factory images that you can download and flash your phone quite easily
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
or a toolkit to do it automatically
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
i would recommend to do it with the first method. if something goes wrong you will know what is it and you can ask for help. with the toolkit if something goes wrong things are more complicated to find the error.
P.S. if you decide installing the factory images via console (first option), it is highly recommended to read the entire process first and after do the procedure.
My phone is rooted, but i dont have any custom ROMs or framework , will this affect it? Or when I get the update my root will simply be gone?

You'll lose root and the custom recovery with the ota. But if you haven't modified / deleted any system files you should get the ota.

It's also worth noting that Google pushes update at different times depending on which area you live in, so even if you read on the news that Lollypop is released on the Nexus 4, it may take a while for your phone to receive the OTA.
Personally, I advice you to install TWRP recovery, its safe and easy to install kernels and roms

[Q] Need Help Updating AT&T S.Galaxy 4 V. 4.2.2 Rooted to Newest Version AT&T

Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!

Upgrading to 5.0 from NI2

Does 5.0 not suck enough to do this yet? My new car has AndroidAuto and I want to use it but can't with my current 4.4.4 verison. Last I read, 5.0 sucked and everyone was trying to downgrade. I'm currently rooted with xposed framework and would miss not being able to turn my phone into a hotspot so hopefully that's possible by now too. What exactly do I need to do?
If you are on N12 you can get to 5.0 rooted. There are many threads on this. Have a search around!
I used a method by Jkruse, and now can even use safestrap without ODIN.

Is there a dedicated thread for the Jkruze method? I see him referenced here but I don't see anything about his method so far.
I used this as I was already rooted on N12. At the bottom of the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62333947
If you are not rooted you likely want to start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53447240
Warning/disclaimer: read everything before attempting anything to your phone....multiple times. These links / help may ruin your phone. Be careful
Ok, I get the process now after reading but I don't know how to SafeSTrap on NI2 if I'm already rooted. The instructions aren't clear on that, the title says you'll be able to use SafeStrap without ODIN but if I'm already rooted on KK then it just tells me to boot into safestrap...
Do I need to install SS? Do I need to disable xposed if/when I install it?
Ok I'm in SS now and I'm not sure if I should flash over the stock ROM or use a ROM slot. Thoughts? I already made a backup of the entire system and these phones have useless internal memory so I wanted to save space by wiping/installing over the stock ROM. Are there drawbacks to that?
If your rooted, you should have safestrap installed. When you boot your phone do you get a screen that pops up after the S5 screen?
It would show a image and have 2 buttons. One option would be recovery.
I didn't have it but I do now. My main question is about the slots, should I overwrite the stock one or install along side? Don't really have the storage to keep the stock slot but also don't know if doing that will do something irreplaceable.
Since you can load a stock 5.0 rooted ROM I'd do the stock slot... however, that's your call. Make sure you follow instructions to get right kernel and such.
Will you ever need 4.4.4 again ? Even so, long as you don't update the bootloader and can see it in Odin you can always rebuild.
Remember, once your on 5.0 with the newer kernel you can only get to safestrap by flashing the n12 kernel. U can do it by using odin, or lollipop safestrap application if applicable.

I don't think the slots were ever working before the dev quit working on it.
Ok cool, that's what I wound up doing anyway and already had to test my backup to see that it worked (it does). Thanks for the help, I'm now on 5.0 and still rooted. Maybe my next step will be xposed, but the only thing I really used on that was the tethering and it already seems to work in this ROM.
Awesome! Glad to hear all is well.
