Since @rebel1699 gave AT&T users a way to expirence 4.4.2 and still maintain some control, I've loaded a few 4.4.2 ROMs. With just a cusary glance I don't see or feel much difference. I was hoping folks sharper than I would discuss this so I (and hopefully others might learn a thing or two). I do know they added a dir system/priv-app to store some apks, but don't know why? Maybe this could be answered first and get the ball rolling. Discuss.
U have to look in the perspective of what google thought at that time. Google implemented system/priv-app and this had to be continued by CM and other AOSP roms or else Google has all the rights to sue them. Only apks in /system/priv-app can use "system"-level permissions.(Thats what i think and i know. I might be wrong?)And as Touchwiz is just a skin ontop of Android, Samsung and other OEMs had to go with this.

Interesting observation. :good: Excellent start. One could expand on this issue as It relates to (Better, Worse or No Change). Maybe it could be disussed how this changes modding, etc...
Responses need not be technical in nature--although they are appreciated--opinions as to how you find the experience of using 4.3 vs 4.4 are greatly appreciated and informative.
This is a group discussion simply to share observations.

Well...status bar now has white icons...theres a camera shortcut on the bottom right corner of the lockscreen. And the lockscreen when playing music is different...those are pretty obvious changes which im sure you've noticed already lololol

KitKat changes the way apps can write to the SD card.
Does anyone know if you can still select the camera to save pics to external storage on KitKat? I don't have a card at the moment to test it out and would like to know before I give this phone to my wife.
Oh and BTW, my phone just updated to NB1 from MK2 by itself, I did not select anything to ok the install, just heard a noise on the phone and looked and it was installing.

It's horrible for the user. Look at this link.
http://www.ibtimes.com/android-44-k...plained-root-access-fix-now-available-1562147
The way I was able to get the functionality back was by rooting (which is somewhat a pain on NB1) and using this method here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
I had to use method 2 since safestrap has issues flashing stuff to NB1.
Apparently this app also fixes it, but I haven't tried. But it still requires root.

Hey guys--Thanks for the comments so far.
If you don't feel like commenting how 'bout voting? Names are not recorded in any way.
A vote kinda says it in a nutshell!
So far, basically we have these diffetences:
1. White status bar icons.
2. Camera shortcut on lockscreen
3. Restricted access to microSDCard in 4.4.2 (and we learned how to regain access)

I am interested to learn this as well. For a casual user, it looks very similar.
OK guys, let's get specific! If 4.4 is better than 4.3--why? If it's not--why? Come on, share! I really think we need to stop taking so-called uprades for granted! I've seen guys/gals almost in tears over losing their custom recovery (MK2) or access to their microSDCard (that btw, cost people their hard earned money). Remember what the commercial sez "knowledge is power!" I believe that is part of what xda was founded on--discovering and sharing knowledge. I know good people from around the globe have increased my knowledge and enriched my phoning experience (if "phoning"is a real word) Instead of just taking all the time, I'm trying to find away to help out however small. I have had the pleasure of communicating with all types of phone enthusiast and am better for it! Give a little--take a little--Discuss!
Oh yeah, as you can see from my signature I want to verbalize a shamless plug for Hyperdrive ROM v15--it's saved me so far during the "lock down." A hardy thanks to @sbreen94!

If you enjoy the idea of owning your phone instead of it owning you, I encourage you continue reading everthing you can. Though there are a few people with poor communication skills-shall we say-the vast majority of the folks around here will help you learn and get the most out of that expensive rectangle you bought. Read one of those "everthing you need to know for noobs threads"--they are well done and will get you started out right. Enjoy my friend!
You will see a "1" on your thanks meter becuase I appreciate your showing interest--and in that way you have helped me!

Actually, one of the reasons I was interested in the update is because I can't get Hyperdrive to work properly. I don't want to derail this thread, but I posted in another thread with someone who was having similar issues with Hyperdrive. If you get a chance, and have a second, please check out this thread. I really love Hyperdrive, but if I can't get it to work, I am thinking about just unrooting and upgrading to kitkat (but I would rather use Hyperdrive). Thanks.

A question for the ages! All I can say is "brood over it brother, brood over it..."
My AT&T S4 says camera pic to SD card and I am on NB1 4.4.2 It says it to Storage/extSdCard/ DCIM/ Camera Pictures camera takes are in there on my SD card. Have you gone into Camera settings and at bottom of list STORAGE is set to Memory Card, Not Device. Just keep hitting the Setting icon on each screen until you get to screen with Lacation Tag Review etc.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but anyways-

I want to root my VZW Note 3. However- I don't want to lose the samsung S-Pen software and features (would defeat the point of the s-pen) I would however like to be able to add more apps to the multi-windows panel as well as add the Note 2 s-pen feature of the "shape shortcuts". I also want to get rid of a bunch of samsungs bloatware.
Any ideas an how/where to go about this?
Your choices are limited for the Verizon N3. I just rooted via this thread. Painless. Do read through the thread, though, particularly the OP and the last 3 or 4 pages.

Do lots of reading on the link above. Kingo is a bit of a pain and I had to use an older version to finally get root. If this is your first root then read, read and read some more. Read how other people have bricked, or thought they bricked, their device and the suggestions people offered. Watch videos and follow carefully. I rooted the GN3 in the first hour I owned it and love the rom I am on. You will find the SPen functional in all roms that I have tried. BajaRom is my daily driver but they are all good. Have fun.

If you root you won't lose any features. The only thing root does is give you 100% access to do anything to your device. You can install and uninstall any apps you want.
Mabye you are confusing this with installing a custom ROM? A custom ROM is something someone created to override your particular operating system. Each one has it's own features, and comes with preset applications. Right now all the ROM's for the Note 3 have S-pen features enabled. You won't lose any functionality. There's tons of advantages a ROM will give you over just simply rooting. They often have all bloatware removed and have battery, GPS, or Wi-Fi tweaks.
Also, if your build number ends in MJE, the latest Kingo build (1.2x) is said not to work. One of the few places you may find an older version (1.1.5xxx) that works for mje is here:

I see that 1.2.2 came out just a few days ago. And it works for MJE on Verizon Note 3?
If so, what differences exist between 1.1.5.x (or 1.1.6x, both versions previously the latest version that worked with VN3/MJE) and 1.2.2?
Thanks All! Looks like I have a lot to research and learn before I attempt! Will post an update once I have achieved it.

There are threads where this should go.
There are people messing around with getting root, but nothing real serious. Unfortunately, the Verizon retail Note 4 isn't likely to ever get root, certainly not by March. No chance.

This was actually my motivation for starting this thread. It seems like it's heating up a bit over there and I was wondering if that had changed anyone's opinion from the first "Root Poll" thread started a while ago. I'm certainly more optimistic after seeing all of the activity. On the other hand history does seem to shoe that the big advances seem to come from people who have been silently waiting in the wings.
Yea it has been a while since I put up that root poll. It's since died out which is understandable.
My point of view is (and yes I voted) lol
I don't believe well see root in this device! I fear that this is the way it's going to be for most new devices rolling out from here on out. Unless you purchase a dev edition.
To me. The phone runs very well! Use the blocking script and u can free up some ram. Otherwise the only things Im missing the most is cleaning up the notification bar and TiBu. Otherwise I'm happy!
Course this is just my opinion.
Carry on

Not gonna happen
Not going to happen. Saving for iPhone 6 plus were jailbreak works no matter what carrier. Maybe the m8. Does the m8 have root on verizon even? It's going to take me a while to save 800 bucks, maybe we will get lucky. Stock would not be bad, but suckwiz is killing me.
I've been optimistic for those on the note 4 verizon version, unfortunatley the sad truth is, its either going to never come to note 4 or will be almost a year till root is achieved. I'm going to be staying with my note 3 for a long time. Possibly forever, until note edge/edge 2 note 5 gets root and custom recovery. Just my opinion, I'm cheering you guys on, it's hard without dev support. Once the dev support get's tripled than might have a better chance. But till then, your gonna have to wait it out. Best of luck and I'm rooting for your guys
I am not optimistic. I suppose it is the DE edition for the N5 or off to another manufacturer whose phone can be rooted.
Can't really put the blame on the manufacturer. I understand that tmobile variant of the Note 4 can be rooted. It's a carrier thing. Maybe Samsung just has a more secure method. But it's only there because Verizon wants it there.

You wouldn't like to be able to write to sdcard using any method of your choice?
Nope. MLB at Bat app. If I want to watch my home team I can't be in the tv/radio "broadcast territory" of either of the teams playing. On my previous phone I used "FakeGPS". Apk has to be copied to "/system/priv-app" in order to work with "Allow Mock Locations" turned off... MLB at Bat app knows if Allow Mock is turned on.
And maybe it was PEBKAC but I'm pretty sure I tried renaming a picture on my SD Card and was denied. Insanity.

Unfortunately Samsung and/or AT&T either did not enable or outright removed the Camera 2 api
which is supposed to allow for RAW capture. That was the one thing I truly looked forward to. Imagine my
disappointment when I later found out that the camera 2 api was not available. If it is simply disabled it
may be possible to fix it. Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable members could answer that question.

Not recommended for locked bootloaders, of which all US carrier versions are
The root situation right now is pretty much in Samsung/Verizon's hands. Our Verizon variants have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, the only root or twrp solutions right now are for exynos. Not only that but our bootloader is locked (currently no official way to unlock like HTC dev equivalent or something) and even worse (for prospects of rooting that is), Samsung utilizes Qualcomms secure boot and dm-verity. So any unsigned images won't be accepted and even if they are, dm-verity would make it so that any changes on the /system partition would boot loop your device. Seems like the only way we'll get root is if Verizon presses on Samsung (like T-Mobile is rumored to be doing) to get some sort of HTC dev type unlock program going.
I had Note 4 on Verizon for a year since release and it never got root. Im pretty sure it's still unrootable device.
I'm guessing this will be the case here.
Maybe there are devs working on this to exploit our phone: http://www.engadget.com/2016/03/22/google-warns-of-android-root-exploit/
Unless this is what we just got the security patch for.

Foxfi works great with unlimited on S7E.
I'm sure you can always root Verizon version of the GS7 but no doubt you won't be able to flash any rooms on the device (just like in the past). But touchwiz has been slimmed down and a hell of alot less bloatware. Even with my past Verizon phonestore I never really found the need for a new ROM (although it would have sped up the phones quite a bit) but I found that just having root access is perfect, especially now a day's with the higher specs and reliability of Samsung devices. I wonder if SuperSU or KingRoot will work, they are the best one step rooting process without a pc.

SuperSU isn't a rooting meathod that works without a custom recovery, so no it won't work.
KingRoot users specific vulnerabilities that have been patched, so no it won't work either.
Error will be impossible without finding a way to get rid of dm-verify, which the only way to do that right now is a repacked kernel, which is not flashable because secure boot prevents unsigned flashing.
