I was trying to flash GApps (Paranoid Android GApps) Google Stock Package, but got 'insufficient storage space in \system partition' instead. I tried formatting, wiping the system partition, and some other stuff. Could someone tell me how to fix this? I did a complete return to stock and tried flashing from there, but the error still came. The ROM that I'm installing this with is Euphoria-OS 1.0. I know it is possible because I was using this setup earlier, before I managed to break it. How do I install the GApps package without compromising and using a smaller package instead (maybe wipe/format \system partition in some particular order?). Using a Nexus 4, 16GB variant.
Dont install full GAPPS. Install mini or mudular GAPPS. Then install whatever you need from playstore like calendar, maps, google+, TTS, GMAIL, etc

I guess that would work, but that's not really 'solving' the problem, more like brushing it under the carpet.

Have you used something like Titanium Backup to go in and remove the apps installed on /system you do not need? (additional language keyboards etc.)? I have not run into this on the N4, but have on other phones (try getting 4.4.4 KitKat on the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, I did ) , I would go in, remove the unneeded apps to free up space, and then reflash Gapps again.
I'm running into the same problem with my Nexus 5.
Even choosing the "mini" GApps there is not enough space to install.
This is really weird.
Would say this is a general problem with LineageOS
I only use Pico open gapps for all the roms I use and have tried so far that way you never have to worry about the insufficient storage space error
I've been fighting with this error and finally solved it... the system partition was not getting mounted.
It was expected to be here: /dev/block/platform/soc.0/by-name/system
.. but looking at the filesystem we see: /dev/block/platform/soc.0/{random}.sdhci/by-name
To resolve:
adb shell
cd /dev/block/platform/soc.0/
ln -s {random}.sdhci/by-name ./
cheers

Could you possibly explain the steps a bit better because I am having trouble with it?
He is talking about symbolic link
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2808394/hard-link-and-symbolic-links-in-unix
But I fail to see how symlink would increase a partition size ?
I managed to get a 1 GB system partition with TWRP BIGSYS, as described here :

Hello everyone:
I have a really weird bug in my Google Apps to Data zip: http://teamuscellular.com/downloads/gapps-ennonedit.zip (no it's not signed, sorry)
I have an HTC Desire (CDMA), which this is being tested on with CyanogenMod 6.1 RC & Nightlies.
What I did with this zip is simply moved the updatable gapps from system to data (so they don't take up additional space when updated), and thus slimming down the system partition for use with Firerat's cMTD (with settings of 110 5 (110 for system, 5 for cache), so that the data partition is a whopping 320MB).
Problem is: After flashing my edited gapps.zip, I cannot install any additional applications (via Market downloading, via RootExplorer installing an apk I have on my SD card, etc.). What happens is the installation process starts, but then the phone immediately reboots and I'm stuck in a bootloop.
I have no idea what the problem would be. I was wondering if maybe somebody here knew?
I'm working on a better solution that doesn't require a customized gapps.zip file, but a solution that redirects the installation process. I would like to know if there is a specific app that is causing the odd bootloop so that I don't include it in future versions.
Thanks!
~Ennon
Nobody can take a look at this and suggest what may be wrong?
Alright whatever, I figured it out.
The end result is Ennon's FSO for Gapps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854459
Anyone have any idea as to why, I cant install any APK's in OmniRom ? - I dont have GApps installed, if that any help. (GApps keeps failing to install).

Well, I have the DEB nightly of 2-19-14 of OmniRom
I have unknown sources checked
But when I try to install the Google Voice apk, I get the message : Cant open file.
Also, would you like the error message for GApps as well. or do you just want the apk troubles ?

I don't see any DEB nightly on Omnilog. Only FLO version is available.
Are you running an unofficial version?
Its an official build right from the OmniRom website.
Heres the link to the DEB...

1) How did you get the apk on your phone?
2) What file manager are u using to install the apk?
I downloaded it directly to the tablet. & I went into the Downloads folder & just taped on it to install. Then I also copied it over to the tablet under OSX. after deleting it off the tablet the first time.

Again, which file manager are you using to navigate to your download folder and install the apk?
There is no file Manager on the system. Nor do I have GApps installed. And when I try to install any thing, it wont install. & since I dont have the Play store, I cant go through that to download/install any thing either… What a mess
- Btw. Thanks for taking an interest & trying to help me with this.
Your issue maybe that you don't have gapps installed and it's missing the installer files to install the apk

Does 'adb install' from a PC work?
Many of the gapps APKs are required to be in /system so they can't be installed via 'adb install' or any other method. Maybe the APK you're trying to install has a dependency on gapps.
Google apps, as well as apps that rely on the APIs they expose (mapping is common) are a tightly intertwined mess. You'll get seemingly silent install errors because you're missing libraries, for example. Trying to restore apps through Titanium Backup will similarly fail if they are missing required libraries.
They generally will show up though logcat if you look carefully. Resolving the issue requires the sufficiently complete and self-consistent (sub-) set of Gapps.

Yeah. What a lot of people don't realize is how many apps that are out there which aren't part of gapps, but require the presence of the core gapps components.

On my verizon G.Nexus I recently flashed GAPPS (GOOGLE STOCK PACKAGE) dev-host link.
In the beginning everything ran well, but lately i am unable to access mobile network(access to internet connection) but works fine when connected to wifi. and if it is set to 3G.
said that, since i have flashed stock package my message is replaced by hangout. which i don't like.
so just for that reason alone i want to flash something conservative.
my question is how do i replace the existing GAPPS, do i need to clean flash with ROM over again?
which is the correct link android-file host or dev-host? what is the difference?
and if i chose to flash mini modular will i be able to get the other Google apps from play?
in general how to choose a appropriate kernel.
thanks guys this forum has really helped me to root my device and so far I am learning quite a bit about it.

As written in TKruzze's post #3 in its GApps thread (question #6), yes. In order to change your GApps package and/or addons, you will need to clean flash your ROM again, and then flash another GApps package and/or addon modules of your choice.

Both are good links. They are mirrors, in order to load balance the traffic and to have continuity of service in case one goes down.

You will be able to install the apps that are available in the Play Store; so if a GApp you want is available in the Play Store and isn't provided in the package of your choice, then yes, you will be able to install it afterward. Google Play Music, Google Drive, Google Keep, Google Cloud Print... are all available in the Play Store.

Read the OP for the kernel you might be interested in, read comments, and try for yourself to see if it suits your needs? (I'm not really into kernels myself, so I might not be the best placed to give you advices.) Remember to select a kernel built for your device and compatible with your ROM -- again, read the OP.

I just want to share my notes and links about successful experience of the Evervolv KitKat 4.4 ROM installation on a Nexus One device.
Developer's thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540366
1. I installed BlackRose Bootloader (see link in the first post of the dev thread) and partitioned my SD to have sd-ext Ext4 partition. Actually, I don't use it yet, because it looks like forced moving of apps to SD (or other "cheating") is not reliable, see e.g. here (about similar ROM): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573352
2. Installed TWRP, getting info here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/51
"Direct download" lead me to some spam so I used "Recovery Image Method" to install the Recovery.
3. Resized System partition using BlackRose.
After several not very successful attempts to install both Evervolv ROM and GApps I ended with System partition size = 240 Mbytes, and Cache = 10 Mb (I didn't play with changing Cache...)
4. Using Recovery I installed the two zip files:
4.1. The latest Evervolv ROM from here: http://evervolv.com/devices/passion ( ev_passion-nightly-2014.07.16-squished.zip )
4.2. "GApps Minimal 4.4.4" which is 23Mbytes in size using link from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/themes-apps/standard-minimal-gapps-t2012857
The two ZIPs currently occupy about 231MBytes in /system (check this using "df" command in the stock "Terminal emulator" application)
5. Of course I extensively did "Wipes" before and after any changes, for a case...
6. Having "Play Store" app in the system, I was able to install several other Google apps: Calendar, GMail, Keep...
Result: I'm pretty happy to have my old Nexus One as a temporary replacement for my lost Galaxy S3. I'm even thinking of buying smaller (than Galaxy S3) phone next time
Performance is quite acceptable so far. Will report later on the experience...
The flight is normal
After two weeks of usage I would say that the new firmware is really usable in a simple "phone-email mode" and I'm happy with the move:
- The performance is mostly acceptable for these my everyday applications, which I installed: Dialer, GMail, Calendar, ColorDict, Pocket, AndStatus, Total Commander, Yandex Maps, Google Keep, Tasker, Volume locker ...
- No unexpected reboots so far. Sometimes I encountered freezes, but occasionally this occurs on my new Galaxy Tab Pro also, so I don't blame the firmware build here...
- I successfully upgraded to the newer nightly build, reflashing system + the same minimal Google apps.
Of course, old hardware cannot fully replace a new one , so:
- There was no memory to install Chrome, Dropbox and WhatsApp (I guess they require too much RAM...)
- "2048" game lags noticeably

Do you use memory tools like Mounts2SD or Link2SD? I use Opera, Dropbox, WhatsApp and many other apps with no problems on my N1 with KitKat :good:
Although Google Maps lags much more than the old version on Gingerbread but that's not the ROM's fault.

At first install of the rom, I tried Mounts2SD. The rom was slow and unstable. So I reinstalled the rom and used the builtin Apps2sd with y/y/n (apps and dalvik-cache mounted on sd-ext). Works fine as daily driver.
Hi all.
Dug an original 2012 nexus 7 (16GB) out of the drawer to see if it could be refreshed a bit and brought back in to some sort of use.
I've put Lineage 14.1 on it and rooted with the nexus toolkit but I had to install the pico Gapps as there is only 689mb of system space. I've trawled the internet looking for a solution on how to make the system partition slightly bigger to accomodate a larger rom and all i came up with was using "Parted" to try and resize the partitions. I've tried everything but i can't get a reading from mmcblk0. Keeps telling me that there's no such file or words to that effect. I know it's there because i can see it. I'm clearly doing something wrong in adb. I see Roms for CRDroid that combined with Gapps pico are too big to fit on. They've been made so there's obviously a way to get them on there that i'm missing.
Would anybody be willing to give me a guide on how to get the system partition bigger?
Thanks very much
There is no possibility to re-orgainize partition sizes for the Nexus 7. The only idea which could work in my opinion: create an image file on the /data partition, move the content from e.g. /system/apps there and bind mount the image file to /system/apps
Unfortunately this new concept needs to be supported by your custom recovery, too, otherwise you would not be able to install any app. Long story, short answer: much work to be done and it's not really needed as you can download almost all Gapps from the playstore and then these apps will be installed on the /data partition.
Btw. custom ROMs occupying too much space on /system probably should try to reduce the number of supported languages / features or renounce on pre-compilation of the build-in apps. First startup will take longer but on the other side you gain some additional space ... Just a hint.
Try google "nvflash" for Nexus 7. Attention! This is a low-level utility, if used improperly and there are no backups, RESTORE THE DEVICE WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE!!!
I strongly do not recommend this, the risk of turning the tablet into a brick is very large.
Instead, you can use root file explorer to remove unnecessary system applications and files (for example, media - boot animation, sounds, etc.) to free space.

Hi.
Spent the last hour or so trying to decipher what nvflash actually was. I think the penny has dropped. You wern't recommending it as a way to get more space. You were potentially recommending it as a failsafe so i could mess about with the partitions without bricking it????
Anyway, thanks very much. I think i'll just have a look at uninstalling some of the non required files to free up the space. I assume the best way would be to install the ROM of choice, go in and uninstall stuff and hopefully if enough space has been created, be able to flash gapps?
@blueplasticsoulman probably you would like to have a look at Magic GApps 2017.11.9, they are implementing more or less the solution I pointed out in my other post. I didn't try yet, but sounds promising to me.

Thanks for that. I did get the problem sorted by installing the rom and then removing things that wern't required such as stock email, telephone functions (not sure why they are in the rom anyway) gallery and some wallpapers. That created enough space to then be able to install pico gapps. Runs quite nice on CRdroid although it probably wont get used as we all have newer tablets. Still, nice to know it runs good after 6 years. :good:
