I believe its been over a year since the last time I rooted my phone. TowelRoot. Since then Ive been stuck on 4.4.2. Everytime I update it stops at 25 percent then fails. Ive tried updating via kies and that too isnt any help. Kies just tries reinstalling to the new firmware over and over. Forgive me for not being so Tech savy, but I would like to know how do I fix this? Simple english and easy videos would be of big help. Im all eyes now waiting for yourreplies. Thx again for all your help.

Thats the thing. I think I was on the version before the 4.4.2 that I have now. After saying I was updated I nolonger had root access. I checked my root with root checker and it says im unrooted. Double checked with simply unroot and that too says im unrooted. Its just not updating. It always fails...

Hi All,
I tried installing CMW on my AT&T galaxy S4 and now the the device is stuck on boot showing 'recovery booting...'
I have tried holding down vol up + power + home key but issue still persists.
I followed the steps in this link: galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-install-cwm-recovery-on-att-or-verizon-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337sch-i545/
Attached is a screenshot to further clarify: sdrv.ms/16drSEy
Only way to turn off device is to disconnect the battery.
Any ideas on how to resolve?
It's too late now but don't go to galaxys4root. Use xda. Do you know what firmware you were on? Was it mf3, etc?
If you were on MF3, you hosed it.

Definitely will not go to galaxys4root again. I do not think I was on MF3 but I am not sure.
The firmware was the same as when I first bought it on release date. Not sure if that helps.
Can I unbrick it with odin?
Unless you froze or deleted the files for OTA, it is impossible for you to still be on the same firmware from release. MF3 auto updates after 3 days of it being downloaded.

If you're not on mf3, yes. Do know if it ever updated itself after you got it.

I am not sure to be honest. I never activated the phone with at&t as I was wanting to install Cyanogen before activating it.
I have downloaded apps to it so it was connected via wifi.
By default would it auto update to mf3 via wifi and not connected to at&t yet?

Probably not. At this point out probably won't hurt to try to flash the mdl firmware with odin
Edit here is a link. You can get the mdl firmware at sammobile.com. the link has mdb firmware. I'd recommend downloading mdl and using it with the guide in the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40976805

UPDATE: These steps worked and my phone is now operational again! Guess I do not have MF3 firmware.
Question, is how do I get cyanogenmod installed at this point? I followed this guide on cyanogenmod site: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_jflteatt
but got into trouble while trying to install ClockWorkMod.
Should I use the steps on cyanogenmod and request assistance for CWM OR is there a better method?
BTW, just want to say thanks to jd1639 and graydiggy. You guys know your stuff!
Thank you......

Were you on mf3 firmware? If you were Odin is not going to work
Alright, so I've been doing rooting things for a long time...and never have I had this many problems. I posted something here earlier about rooting my S4, installing ROMs and having it hang on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Screen. So I figured I would try booting with Odin and re-installing a stock image. No luck. I keep getting this show up on my Galaxy S4 when I click start -- "secure check failed" and Odin shows a fail.
I don't even know where to go from here because I'm looking at an expensive paperweight at this point. Has anyone ever seen this before or even know where I can start. Any help would really be appreciated...at this point I just feel defeated.

I always get firmware from sammobile.com. Download the firmware ending in mdl. It'll be a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it and use that in Odin.

I'll download the firmware there and see if that solves my issue. Is there any way this could be related to the kernel? If I restore this firmware I will lose my root, correct?

You will lose root. Odin should put everything back on like it was new. You do have to register on sammobile to download the firmware, but it's free.

Hey. So I've got a newly rooted S5 here (Exynos version). And I was wondering now that OTA updates won't function (rooted), how to get those updates ? And the consequences, Do I lose root after updating ? Can it harm the phone or anythn ?
Thanks in Advance
You've to go back to Stock firmware..
Then you'll able to receive OTA updates..

I understand. But apart from the OTA updates on the phone, There is Kies. But I'm not sure about the consequences and all.
If you update via kies you will loose your root but im not sure kies will let you update with a rooted rom.

If the bootloader has not been incremented, we'll be able to regain root on NK2 once there's an ODIN flashable NK2 kernel. So basically, I don't believe it's possible just yet.

Everytime I try to download towelroot (both on my computer and on my GS5), the .apk is blocked as a virus package.
The S5 really doesn't like the website for towelroot, and google searches for the apk also get blocked by Symantec. Has this apk been compromised or has it contained a Trojan all along?
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Wow, even Dropbox kills the file...
After I disabled my antivirus (Symantec) and tried to restore the file, I get security errors ALL OVER THE PLACE on my desktop computer.
*** UPDATE ***
Well, I was able to get tr.apk onto my SDcard and then successfully obtain root!
I don't know what the issue is with towelroot, but my clock on my desktop was reset and the internet time server could not correctly rsynch the time; I had to manually reset the time.
It's pretty scary when this happens...I don't know if it is a false positive Trojan detection or what, but I sure hope somebody more knowledgeable has reverse engineered the tr.apk and validated that it is safe!
OH Well, thanks everybody. Keeping fingers crossed!!!
I Can't wait to get a fully unlocked Nexus 6 (and hopefully prevent VZ from locking it like they try with the Developers Edition devices)!!! Maybe its time to switch carriers.

One more shot if you haven't tried already. Flash the full NCG tar from here to see if you can at least get root back and then flash the NI2 firmware. If that works install a NI2 stock or custom ROM.

Bummer. I might have got it wrong but there are a few saying it can be done. According to this post you need to flash NE9 first. Flash the NK2 kernel at the end instead of NI2 if you want NK2. Hopefully that works.

Not true...I was able to root a brand new GS5 NK2 using the described procedure (with hesitation from downloading Towelroot). If ODIN is failing it means something is wrong with your flashing procedure. Try another computer/cable and make sure that whatever you are using has the Samsung USB drivers installed.
For reference I used ODIN v. 3.0.7 instead of the latest version.
