Want to Purchase new - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

I Want to purchase a new HDX 7, however i want to be able to put pure android (CM, etc)
What is the current status of being able to do that.

If you are unlucky and get kindle with 4.5.2 you can't do absolutely nothing... no root, no playstore, no custom ROM: It's dark ages period for kindle.
I would also like to have a custom CM but no luck. Till then just sideloaded some google apps but a lot is broken. No push-notifications etc...

I would advise considering an alternate device such as nexus if you dont like fire os. Honestly you will not see a performance difference especially if you root and custon rom. Currently the HDX world is getting beter for old devices that did not update but all in all the safe bet is buy something else.

The tablet has finally got a shot of adrenaline into it. How far that goes, we will see. I found ordering the tablet online through amazon is about a guarantee it will be updated further than you would like. I just bought the 7inch at the local bestbuy and lucked out having 13.3.1.0. I would go that route if you're going to buy one and would probably have greater odds of getting the right firmware.

Cheapy tablet wars, your opinion!

Looking for a tab for my wife. Not only does she get a gift, but I get something to tinker with =)
There's a nook tablet in the trunk of my car. The hardware specs were better, and with the nook color's history, well...I leaped before I looked. The bootloader lockdown makes me a sad panda.
See, I dont want a weaksauce e-reader. I want a tablet! So, with a KF, I can put CM 7 on it (is that a honeycomb build?) and I'll basically have an acceptable tablet experience.
Should I return the nook? Does CM7 run stably on this thing? Are the hardware limitations (esp the lack of sd card port) really that restricting? Should I perhaps buy an actual tablet like a galaxy tab or a xoom?
I appreciate your input!
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt
CM7 is not running with sound, if she can handle that....
This sounds like getting her a shirt in your size and style for Christmas, not much of a gift imo.
Get her something SHE wants, not something YOU want.
(that said, I really like my Kindle Fire. I have not rooted as I actually like the amazon interface and it does everything I want it to do by sideloading apps off of my phone through dropbox. Read all of the issues people are having after rooting or messing with this or that before you get crazy with her device)
Rooting itself is trivial...
I got one of these for my wife.... She had a real hard time using it, not because there was Any issues with the unit, actually it did everything she wanted... The trouble was when she wanted to use it, she had to pry it out of my hands.
I got my own.
While I didn't root her's before I did it on mine, that was more because she didn't need anything other than what it came with. And I wanted to make sure I was not going to mess something up.
So I did all the experimenting on mine, and after doing that, I had no issues with rooting hers to add some "extras". She just keeps it in unroot mode to do all her stuff and stays in the default UI that comes with the Kindle Fire.
At $199 (actually I got mine for $123), it is hard to justify not just getting your own and let her have the present you provided.
I think it is a way cool device... and play with (my own) all the time. She uses her's daily for ebooks, videos, netflix etc..
+1 don't buy her toys for yourself.
I got my wife a Nook Color a few months back that she uses daily. She'd call out a hit on me if I so much as thought of rooting it. I think it's still on 1.3 firmware, but I'm not going near it to find out.
Thanks for the input.
I see what you guys are saying, but it's not what you think. A lot of her family members have gotten ipads, and she wouldn't mind getting a tablet too. We mutually agreed that 500 was too much, and well, I dont subscribe to the maccult.
She always steals my phone to play games on. I have a thunderbolt, and she has an iphone 4. She once made mention that if she could get her favorite games from my phone on a tablet of her own...well, now that would be something.
Since an N64 emulator capable of playing Mario 64 (one of the allures of my phone for her) isn't included off the bat, I'm merely saying I'll enjoy doing the needed mods to this thing.
At 200 or 250 a pop, the price is right, no?

Sideloading is enabled by default on the Fire, so you could load emulators and whatever off-market apps you like without much effort.
Definitely get the KF over the NT if you plan on toying around with it. The Fire's development has picked up in the past few days and I'm sure we'll see a fully working ROM (hopefully CM9) very soon.
I personally have an Acer A100, but got one of my less tech inclined friends to buy a Fire and let me tinker with it until I'm satisfied, then I'll turn it over. So I can definitely relate to the allure of toying around with someone else's devices.
Root it, install Go Launcher EX, install Android market, install Dolphin browser, install Swype, then unroot.
Configure go launcher ex to your taste, then make it the default desktop. Make Dolphin the default browser.
You now have a tablet with the best of both worlds, as you can access all of the Amazon content, including prime videos.

This.
As a previously very happy Nook Color owner, I was hoping that the NT would get hacked, but that effort seems to have stalled and all the devs are jumping on the NT bandwagon.
Even if the NT gets hacked in 1-2 months, all the devs seem to be getting Kindle Fires now ... and I know from experience that ROM development with only 1-2 devs is not pretty (especially if they eventually lose interest in your device).
I would also get a kindle fire over a nook just because there will be ;ore developpers dedicated to the device. Although, look around the web, HP is going to sell a few touchpads for 99$ on ebay Friday, so you might check it out.

Suggestions for a new KF user?

Hello all,
Long time member of XDA, and love of android devices.
I just got a KF and am pretty excited to see what this thing can do.
I am interested in rooting it, mainly for all my android games that I have but dont want to lose any features.
So far this sounds like CM7 is the way to go due to no HD on CM9?
However by rooting I lose the Amazon interface completely right? This I would maybe like due to the e-books I have as well.
Any suggestions on best ROM, kernels?
Recommended Recoverys/root methods?
Thanks!
+1 on best rooting method. I get mine Wed.

Sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too!
Well you can, sort of.
Rooting the Fire by itself, doesn't remove the kindle interface, although it does affect the ability to buy or watch a movie from Amazon unless you temporarily unroot the device, which is easy to do with an unroot app. What rooting does is give you control over the Fire so you can download from other markets other than Amazon and install other Android roms.
Even using the stock Kindle you can read other books on it. I use a program on my win PC,Calibre, to download and convert other books onto the kindle, works great.
But, not as much fun as installing and playing around with other roms. Using a good recovery program like TWRP, will let you backup and restore both the stock Kindle any any of the other Android versions you install. The KFU program link in post #3 in this thread is a good start to get your device rooted, new boot program, and recovery program. I did mine without it, step by step, but it sounds pretty easy and reliable. I would suggest reading up on it first though.
I'm using the rooted stock kindle, Cyanogenmod 7, and the Energy version of ICS. It has a few bugs, no video hardware assist but other than that runs well. The key is being able to backup and restore, so if you don't like one version, you just go back to another.
my expiriences
Personally ive installed a couple Roms cm7 being my favorite but I reverted back to the of stock Rom and just use go launcher ex. Rooting is worth it if you don't have amazon prime but if you do the amazon instant video is a loss but with the android market installed then you can still buy movies with that. Twrp is also needed but my favorite is simple changing the annoying rotating wallpaper.
I'm new to the Kindle Fire party as well... I managed to use the Kindle Fire Utility to perm root, install TWRP, and then FireFireFire. Following that, I installed the CM7 rom by Whistlestop and it seems to be running fine so far.
My only question is this:
Since I just got my Kindle Fire, I have Amazon Prime and want to use instant video. Is there any easy way to get instant video running on the CM7 Kindle Fire? I understand the need and method to hide root or temporarily unroot, but I've seen posts saying install some amazon account stuff, then the app.
Are there any simple steps to take in order to do this properly and watch my amazon prime instant videos on cm7?
( example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347745 )
I have joined the ranks of the kindle fire with the 139 deal. I was about to drop on a ipad2 3g referb but jumped on the KF. I'm looking to root and install the go lanucher Ex and Play store.
My questions
1. How is the stock KF on battery life compaired to the CM7 rom?
2. I love how my Galaxy S2 functions and way to recreate that on the KF?

Brand New Fire HD 8" 2017 — Anything I can do before first boot?

Hey guys,
I just hopped on the $50 deal Amazon was having for Fire HD 8" tablets, and I cringe at the idea of dealing with Amazon's proprietary bs.
Ideally I'd like to install a custom ROM, but it looks like that isn't an option regardless of my software version or generation. So, I'd really like to root at the very least, if possible.
Assuming that maybe the model ships with an OS version less than 5.6, is there anything I can do before first boot that could enable me to root or do something helpful?
I hope that all makes sense. Thanks so much for the help you guys.
I'm in the same situation with that $50 deal. Well I've actually booted mine up, but without internet connection, to avoid any updates from which I may not be able to backtrack. Judging from mine, it looks like these are shipping with Fire OS 5.6.0.0 which is dated as 28 Nov 2017. I gather that so far there's nothing in the way of unlocking to be done for this version, and that downgrading seems to risk the device bricking. I wish there was a separate xda section for the 2017 versions, it would save a lot of searching and disappointment
Honestly, unless you want to maintain the remote possibility of gaining root, just pay the $15 to Amazon to remove ads, install Google Play Store and Launcher Hijack and your launcher of choice, and it will feel as close as you're going to get to a standard Android tablet.

Fire 10 7th Gen Root or Android on Tablet?

Was considering getting a fire10. The same one here:
https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Amaz...1529422391&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=tablet&psc=1
I dont necessarily care about root although I guess it would be ok. Is there any way to get android on it? Or at the bare minimum, the store, so I can do google native things? lol.
You can get Google play , and change the launcher , you can also root . Fire os is a modified Android .
There is no way to change it though.
Did you even look on the xda fire hd page . It's all there

Rooting it is fairly easy. If you don't want to bother with that though, you can install the Play Store without a problem (there is just a sequence in which the Google apps have to be installed) and have Launcher Hijack run your launcher of choice and it would look and function like a regular Android. The HD 10 is the best tablet for the money, in my opinion. I tried to get another one when they went on sale for $100 a few months ago but I just missed it

Custom ROM for Fire HD 8 10th gen (2020)?

Have any developments been made in regards to custom ROMs on this latest Fire tablet? It is on sale today for only $60, and I'd love to pick on up, but Fire OS . Sorry if this has been asked or answered before, I'm new to the form. I've been looking around, but have only found this thread which doesn't get very far. Thanks.
There is no root or unlock yet. There are no custom roms.
Deal of the day
I imagine some folks will end up here today due to the Amazon deal-of-the-day which includes the new Fire 8:
https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Fire-HD-8-Tablet/dp/B07TMJ1R3X/ref=gbps_tit_s-5_4e18_dde99212
If it was rooted this would have been a great time to pick up some of these... alas.
Maybe an XDA dev wants to try his luck on rooting one of these on the cheap(er)?
Any News?
Also got one of these, hoping to put a clean ROM on this thing
With these now being a hot sales item, I hope dev interest will increase and we can get root and custom roms.
Until such time we learn/find a way to root our HD8/+ Gen 10 ... I say say that the latest Toolkit here (V8.2) has been pretty good for me ... ads blocked, OTA disabled/stopped, Google Play Store running & other apps sideloaded, Nova Launcher working - it's my one-handed device to watch Smart Youtube TV and Vanced Youtube - quick email checks, etc. Fairly responsive and a very good investment for $50 shipped (my net cost) - slightly faster CPU & extra battery run time, bonus icing.

I’m afraid not. My device is also pretty usable after the “treatment” with toolkit, nevertheless I’d still appreciate the chance of installing another OS. I see many people online are asking if there’s any update, I’d even invest my own time in finding a way to root it… if only I had the knowledge to do it I’m afraid no Pro user owns such a device and therefore there is nobody searching for a way to unlock it.
does fire 8 plus support vietnamese language?
anynews for this Onyx?
Any news here? I'm kind of surprised the KFONWI has been out over two years and nobody's been able to get LineageOS working.
Amen. LineageOS on KFONWI would be ideal!
If someone could teach me how to build a custom rom and how to unlock the bootloader and stuff on this amazon tablet, I would totally maintain a build for this rom. I hate FireOS, and since I have no idea how to do anything on android, I don't know how to build roms and stuff.
