[Q] Does rom/kernel affect data speeds? - Networking

I installed liquidsmooth 4.0 some days earlier, i feel like i'm not getting data speeds as i used to get in stock ROM and kernel. Has the new ROM/kernel has affected it Or its just me.
If i tether connection from other phone using the same SIM i get higher data speeds about 1.5 times higher.

It might be an issue of the ROM not actually having a data connection when it says it does (data may be "broken" in the ROM, and only able to achieve a 3G connection while reporting 4G, and a 2G connection while reporting 3G, etc.).
This question should have been posted in the ROM development thread, and not in the Networking section. If it had been, the ROM developer, or other users, could either answer your question or post their experiences.

The data isn't broken but i don't get satisfactory data speeds. I mostly rely on 2g as my plan is 2g

definitely. Most custom kernels support different tcp/ip settings that you can mess around with. It can be time consuming, but so is almost anything on this site thats actually worth using. I tried this out last night, http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...mod-projct-mod-boost-nitro-x-edition-t2809443 I guess its a full package of tweaks that are pretty easy to use. I ended up uninstalling tho, and using the tweaks from my old ROM and putting them into the new one Im trying out. It did seem to work alright tho, but I didnt really give it enough time to really just say how much. good luck.

Im still on Ivan's Official...am I using an outdated ROM?

All I really want is the fastest, most stable ROM available. Are there better options? It needs to be able to tether, too; I'm using PdaNet right now and it's working flawlessly.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, opinions and advice.
You're using as up-to-date software as thousands and thousands of non-rooted Eris owners. The *core* of the OS, Android 2.1, is current. Sure, you can get Android 2.2 on your phone but it's not really ready for prime-time yet.

Ya, just flash Zanfurs OC kernel if you want to have more accurate settings and you should be good. And by the way, PDAnet lets you tether with any rom, as far as actually tethering without pdanet then the ivan rom should do the trick though I never tried it myself.

I use this configuration EXACTLY.
I also use wifi tethering a lot around the house for my gf's laptop.
I have gone to EVERY popular ROM out there for at least a couple of days. I keep going back to SenseUI if a ROM doesn't have it, and I keep coming back to Ivan's when I get to SenseUI. EvilEris was the second longest ROM I ever had, almost a month. Was finished with Sense crashing, and the De-Odex'd stuff (no room in the /data/ area, phone kept running out of memory, and no I don't like A2SD).
Ivan's and PDANet ftw.
You can try tnoobs it is a stock ROM, a revamp of plainjane. It has the perks and is quick.

- +1 - Tried them all, including the Froyo scene - very buggy! Ivan's is the standard of reliability and reasonable speed. I use PdaNet and Wireless. The only other ROMs that seems to be as stable and add an effective Apps2SD is Fresh 3.0 and XTR-Sense 3.03.

simplex wireless-n and b03 vs b05?

can someone please tell me about simplex wireless-n in general. just curious as to if it would benefit me in anyway. i do have a wireless n router as well as a g router bridged to it. i guess my question is what does for the phone.
i am also interested in the liberated b05 rom and would like to know more about it. i am currently running b03 and just wanting to see if their are any BIG differences between the two before i flash a new rom. keep in mind that i just want a working phone without too many bugs but i love new features!
and yea im a noob! so take it easy on me. just trying to learn this stuff. im going into computer programming specifically for phones and gadgets and such, so the more i can learn now the easier i will have it later. thanks for any imput
I will point you to the change log on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708434
As you have a wireless N router this will benefit you in a speed boost at home. Thought I believe that 5gz spectrum is not available just the 2.4gz? Anyway I run the b005 without any problems and it has proven a stable rom.
Cool thanks, I was aware of the change log. just wanted Some opinions.

I am not an expert but I believe the "wireless-n" means you get faster speeds, more bandwidth. Obviously just like your computer. The "simplex" part means that they have only been able to get this working in One direction. Either sending or receiving but not both at the same time. So in that respect it is not the same as a computer as that can do wireless-n in duplex. Still it should be a good boost in speed if you are downloading files, etc...

very slow 3G/HSDPA data connection with all builds :(

Can anyone confirm if they have a rock solid 3G/HSDPA data connection with HKCSL 1010 with any android builds? Please post APNs and radio/wm ROM/combinations if possible. It is nowhere near the speeds from my WM ROM from before but I just love the Android OS so much more as it's smoother and faster than any custom WM ROM's available. It runs great if it's on WI-FI, i just can't pay for my data connection and settle for a nice OS and almost 500Kbps data connection for now it's very frustrating and dissapointing since i'm in HKCSL 1010 NEXT G data plan..
I don't think the hardware supports TRUE HSDPA data

with latest builds, i have problem with bad signal reception... a have edge connection most of time.. i didn`t have this problem before... now in 4 builds i`ve tryied.. maybe it is because ppp?
Thanks for the replies guys but what do u mean true hsdpa? We are on a 3.5G network and also I see some other fellow users having 3g speeds of 3-5mbps which is super fast already. I have tried almost every rom out there and different barebone WM ROM as well but made no difference. Speeds are like GPRS slow! Tried PPP and RMNET but can't even tell a difference...sad as I can't use it with full potential.

Those numbers aren't exactly true as the browsing is slow as hell. I don't know how speedtest.net do it but it sure hell ain't that fast as it seems like it's constipated.
Most I get on every build I've tried is rough 0.33mbs connection, I've hit nothing over 45kb/s yet seem to be able to upload at over 70, that's on T-MOB UK, pain in the arse but I just try and stick to wifi, nothing I can figure out after swapping so many roms/radios/builds/modules etc etc etc!!!!
try out bangsters 1.4 (the latest i think) and edit the startup to PPP, used chuckyrom and 2.12 radio and seems like it's working pretty good. Not much constipation at all. Try it out and let me know. I only had wifi so couldn't check 3G speeds before (here in HK for trip now).
i am using darkstones desire hd build on o2 in the uk and currently get roughly 2meg down when connected to hsdpa

Still the same, I can't figure out the issue, only thing I can get it down to is something on T-MOBs end, but even that I don't know haha!!!!

Lei ho..
Please try my setup via my tag, I'm getting 2.3Mbit for download and 700kb for upstream..
BladeZ
Since moving to Android on HD2 from the myTouch Slide, my data speeds have oddly evened out.
Meaning, data speeds have increased in places I used to only get EDGE coverage at and decreased to about 2mbps where I used to get 4-5.
I just hopped on to this part of XDA but I've gathered that Android development has only been happening for about three months. That's nothing! Look at all the cool stuff people have done! I think it's only a matter of time before the radios and builds start jiving a bit better. I'm ultra happy with what I've got so far.

hi BladeZ, lei ho ah! Thanks for the advice. Just wondering if you are in HK and using the provider as me?
Regards
My speedtest results are good (~450-500 kB/sec down, 150 kB up) on 3g, but when I use the market, the speeds are much slower. Same with wifi: speedtest reports excellent results, but using market is slow.
Hi I just flashed back to a dutty's WM rom and the browsing speed is much more faster and consistant. The rom is fast but opera just isn't smooth at scrolling and the windows limitation of colors isn't as smooth either. There are always some good and bad for the 2. I miss android already...but until there is a fix for consistent 3G and hsdpa connection, it is not ready for primetime yet...just my personal opinion.

I'd have to agree unfortunately. Android's biggest weakness in my eyes is it's reliance on online connectivity. Nearly every app on Android needs to go online. So when the online connection is intermittent and unstable it makes Android virtually defunct.
for all the fellas having Data being slow....read on!
GUYS!!! been fiddling with this $hit long enough! Today, just found out why my provider and 3G speeds are so damn slow. I read up on other forums (not xda) and played with APN settings. Don't know if they were case sensitive or not, or whatever..but i simply put in my provider name "CSL", and APN as "internet" and leave EVERYTHING ELSE blank, i get a screaming fast connection. NO HICCUPS NO CONSTIPATION. TRY IT!!! Don't input all those garbage numbers as it just confuses you! ONE thing though, you will not be able to access WAP I believe but i don't use it anyways. I have a LIMITED data plan and all this testing been taking up my 500MB quota already so I won't even bother with the speedtest process anymore. GOOD LUCK and please report back guys!
I m getting speeds upto 2.6 mbps download and upload 500 kbps with desire hd rom..2.14 radio..energy Rom in winmo..

Try surfing to secure sites...that speedtest doesn't mean much if your provider restricts you from certain secure sites. Let me know.

What happens if you flash a non 4g rom onto a 4g xoom?

I have a 4g xoom that I bought used and use only on wifi. Does flashing a rom that doesn't support 4g simply disable 3/4g? Or will it not work at all? Are xoom roms even worth flashing or is a kernel a big enough speed increase?

Flashing the Odachi kernel will give you overclocking and lots of added functions while preserving your 3G/4G. It's good to keep it even if you don't plan to use it.

Would I not be able to flash back to stock to get it back?
I actually moved back to an OS that deliberately does NOT have 3G/4G. I don't have the service and just use WiFi but even in Zirplane mode, after the upgrade, my battery life went from days to hours.

I have an a501, would an a500 ROM benefit me? (battery wise)

I got a great deal on an a501 and would NOT be using 3g.
Since most ROMs are for a500s, and wouldnt have any 3g capability, would using one of those extend my battery life since there would be no polling for any 3g signal and it would be entirely disabled?
Again, I have no interest in using 3G so the fact that the a500 Roms dont have 3g capability does not bother me at all.
Thanks!
I am pretty sure that if you install a ROM meant for the A500, that 3G will be disabled, but you also have to disable the cell standby (even A500 users have to do this) to disable it, all you have to do is to add ro.carrier=wifi-only on to /system/build.prop. you must have a custom kernel installed found here. also, I am not sure if you need a custom ROM but if you are installing a custom kernel, you might as well go the extra mile and install a ROM as well. (P.S. the custom kernel i linked you to also lets you overclock to 1.64Ghz)
I have used one on my Iconia and have never gone back. there are many ROMs and I can not tell you which one is best for you, however, i can tell you that I like this one. Another popular one is this one. try them out, but of course make use of the backup feature in CWM just in case happy flashing!
You shouldn't need to edit the build.prop if you flash an A500 rom as the build.prop would already be for wifi only.
You will definately loose 3G functionality a the A500 roms don't support it.
Unless you are using 3G all the time this shouldn't affect battery life too much.... Depends on other factors, do you have apps that are regularly accessing 3G behind the scenes...
If you have a wifi tab then the best idea is to turn wifi off to improve battery, you could try turning 3G off on your A501 and see if that helps... If, like me you have wifi on, pretty much always, then it probably won't do much...
Thanks for the replies
