Hi All,
I'm selling my S4 and I've been reading up on how to secure wipe it. I've been reading that encrypting and then wiping will render the data useless as the key is lost.
I've already factory reset my phone before encrypting it. If i fill the internal SD with junk and encrypt it will this have the same result as it's overwriting the previously occupied space?
Thanks
You shouldn't need to fill the internal storage with junk before encrypting. The very act of encrypting, even on an empty drive, should destroy the pointers to the old data. From there, factory reset and sell.

Now I realise I am likely to be subjected to a torrent of mockery for this, but feel I should post it in the spirit of a public service announcement.
I needed to do a factory reset of my Galaxy S today (Froyo JPO via Odin - nice), and as a clever and forward thinking IT literate person thought it would be a good idea to back up my apps (if only to save my Angry Birds progress).
So I downloaded Titanium Backup from the Market, and used it to backup all my apps & and services with "useful data".
I then proceeded to do a factory reset using the handy code *2767*3855# (due to the minor snag of forgetting my Mobile Tracker password, and being unable to use the reset option in Settings)
arning 1 - This performs a reset as soon as you hit # - no "are you sure" or similar. Use with caution.
Once that had completed, all was good (messaging app was working again which was the reason for the reset), and I proceeded to reinstall Titanium Backup from the Market, and went to restore all my apps.
FAIL
Warning 2 - Titanium Backup saves it's backups on the internal SD card on a Galaxy S. This gets wiped by a Factory Reset, therefore saying Syonara to all your carefully backed up data. Whoops.
Now I will readily admit this is my own daft fault for not checking the backup location, and copying the data to my external SD card, but then "Experience is simply the name we give to our mistakes"
Here's hoping this prevents at least one other person making the same foolish mistake.
James.
Hangon, I'm 99% sure the internal doesn't get formatted using factory reset.. Well at least on my device (Aussy GT-I9000)

Today I did a Factory reset thiking I will los the data but the data is there. This confirm the 1% to complete de 100%.

Data should still be there fella in 'sd' just move it into 'external_sd' same happened to me.
You should have really read the documentation before using the app
That being said, I have my backups stored on Dropbox so at least if anything happens I can restore it from the cloud.
Trust me guys - the TitaniumBackup folder on the internal SD was empty after the factory reset & reinstall.
That said - it's possible it was the reinstall that blanked it, although that would be even more daft.
Having not checked it during the process, I can't comment for sure when it went bye-bye.
It never happened to me. What about other files on your Internal SD? Did they get wiped out too or just the contents TitaniumBackup folder?
No idea, anyone experienced d1verjim's case? All I can think of is bug of TB that makes it "Delete all Backups".

"Experience is simply the name we give to our mistakes", but I think it's not your mistake this time, so hold on the 'experience' first! Gotta find the cause for that. TB is well-known for its stability.
Is there any way to wipe the internal memory on Iconia? Mine is just too messed up, and a wipe/factory reset in CWM leaves internal memory intact.
Try the advanced settings in CWM. I usually just plug my device into my PC and delete all that's on it if I want to clean all the crap I accumulated from it.
HAllo,
i come from HTC HD2 and it had an external SD Card. Reseting the Phone was no problem because all my data on the SD Card will not be deleted.
On the Nexus 4 is different.
How can i keep my saved data (APK, backups, documents) on the internal memory (emulated SD card) when i reset the phone? is there any way to do that?
Thanx in advance

Anything on the virtual SDcard won't be touched in a normal factory reset. Apks and their data will though, because they're not on the SDcard to begin with.
It's just like a normal phone, except when manually formatting the entire data partition, or when unlocking the bootloader
See guide stickied at top of this forum or in my signature.
There are methods for backing up and restoring your data on a device.
But as far as once you've flashed a custom recovery...
Custom recoveries will ignore /data/media/
This is your "sdcard."
So they still wipe /data/ but keep your "sdcard" directories intact.
This is NOT true for the stock recovery, mind you.
OK this seems like a silly question but when I Google Nexus 4 factory reset, all I get are instructions on how to do this, and the warning that all memory will be wiped, to include pictures, videos, etc.
When you perform FR (hardwipe or regular) on the Nexus 4, does it wipe the sdcard folder? I went into the menu to do this, and was surprised to see that it says it would--I'm used to having a separate SD card in my Nexus S, and as such I never needed to backup all that extra stuff. It was way more convenient to FR the phone and simply redownload the apps I used. Even the save data from those apps would stored on the SD card and be ready to go.

From my experience, it erases everything on sdcard0. With an phone that has a external memory slot, it would be sdcard1 which is not erased during a reset.

The one thing you have to remember, if you do a factory reset via settings, it will wipe everything! If you do a factory reset via the recovery, it will wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik, but NOT your sdcard or System. This is using TWRP as the custom recovery btw. The reason it doesn't wipe the system is when you flash a custom rom, the system will be wiped automatically.
Edit: Using cwm recovery, a factory reset doesn't wipe your sdcard as well.

Dears,
I just bought my S5, suddently unpgraded to Lollipop.
Briefly, I can install 50% of the apps I had before, it's going out of storage.
I did a full wipe after upgrade, so there's no wasted space in the storage.
I couldn't find a partitions scheme, some I'm here to ask if this numbers are normal:
There's a lot of data in the cache, I need to frequently wipe it.
But overall, tapping used space I see in detail 7.5GB of applications, while going to application manager and summing all applications' size I arrive to 3.4GB only: it seems there's 4GB lost somewhere:
Anybody noticed the same?
Where can I check partition sizes for the S5?
Thanks everybody and best regards.
Factory reset after upgrading to Lollipop, KK leaves rubbish files behind and cause more problems than just lack of storage
Also remember now with LP, it uses ART instead of DALVIK, which means app sizes will be bigger
Well, I've been doing it, same problem after several days.
Also, I actually have 350MB of cache, 800MB free, but of I don't clear the cache I can install nothing, Play returns not enough free space...
Possible it partitioned 4GB for "private mode" I forgot to disable it when I rooted and now everything is showing I only have 12GB and trying to find out how to recover that partition and add it back to the internal storage partition currently. Try turning "private mode" on and see if your storage page shows a chunk of space used for that
