Facebook Lite - Nexus S General

You probably know that the official Facebook app kills our beloved Nexus S: it uses tons of storage space (and we have just 1 GB for apps), it uses a lot of RAM and it is slow as hell.
Now there's an official alternative, Facebook Lite: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.lite
It literally flies when you compare it to the standard version.
Unfortunately, it's only available for some countries, however you can manually download its APK.
Download: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/lite/

moto x 2014 running unofficial cm12 works good.
i can't install directly from play store, but via apk file works good.
cheers

Works fine on Galaxy S3 running CM12. Some disadvantages: tagging people in posts and comments is not possible, no video playback, no possibility to post a video, no timeline sorting settings, no full support for group admins.

And no way to save pictures

Yeah there are some limitations, however I think it's a good compromise for an old device like the Nexus S.

[APP][DISCONTINUED] Grooveshark Mobile - SOURCE CODE PUBLISHED

UPDATE 9/10:
Sorry, the project is discontinued by me. The source code is published as an attachment.
Feel free to continue the development (but if you do, please mention my name somewhere).
End users: Please try Groovefish by Barguast instead!
Thanks for all your support!
----------------------------------------------------------------
As the titles states, I've developed an application able to stream any song from Grooveshark.
The application is still full of bugs, so it should be considered more of a proof-of-concept at the moment.
I will spend my limited spare time on my new, still secret, project. Keep your eyes open
UPDATE 29/9:
New alpha version (0.2) released!
Some of the crashing is hopefully gone. Please leave feedback!
Known bugs:
BASS (the audio player) sometimes gives you a message box saying that the playback failed. Wait a few seconds and try again.
The spinning umbrella gets stuck on the result list (scroll a little to remove it).
The search query doesn't get copied from the search screen to the result/player screen.
Requirements:
Windows Mobile 6.1 (5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 will probably work).
.NET Compact Framework 3.5.
QVGA, VGA or WVGA screen resolution.
Download and screenshots as attachments.
Thanks to scilor for letting me use his kinetic scrolling demo code!
sounds a great idea.
unlikely to see a spotify app for a long while...
I think you shouldn't worry about it for a couple of reasons.
First, Grooveshark hasn't been labeled illegal.
Second, if Grooveshark has a problem with you reverse engineering their product they'll probably contact you first asking you to stop developing, at which point you might have to, or you can attempt to get hired by them for a windows mobile/ mobile version of their product all together!.... ( I doubt the last part, but I can hope can't I?)
Third, this is development forum, and you are developing within the bounds of things that aren't explicitly illegal.
So yeah, bring joy to our community and spread your knowledge.
looks like a great app, as said above a spotify app will be a long while off lol
sounds awesome, keep it up!
I would be VERY interested in this app.
Color me completely and unbelievably interested!!
Extremely interested. I could do graphics, if you wanted to go that approach.
I know this is very early, but I believe you could have a killer app:
*Kinetic Scrolling
*Great looks
*Easy to use
*User account?(maybe)
Thanks for all the response!
I've been improving the stability during the weekend and will now start to improve the looks.

Thanks, but right now I think I'm OK with the graphics. I'm using Fluid to get a nice look and feel.
Actually, I'm having more problem with the audio playback part, where I'm using BASS.
Stay tuned for more details and maybe a alpha version!
then let me offer my servics as a tester. I would use the app a lot, so I could help track down bugs. I have a Diamond, which is VGA.
if you need a betat tester count me in.
This sounds like a fantastic idea. How much bandwidth is required for streaming?
Fluid library looks nice, but it would be even better to use graphics similar to Grooveshark itself as it's interface would lend itself to mobile nicely.
Can't wait to give this a try
thanks at least for bringing this site to my attention. will try running it off my skyfire for now.

Grooveshark is streaming MP3 files, and the bitrate differs. Some songs I've tested are 128 kbit, and some are 192 kbit. There's most likely other bitrates as well. A regular 3G connection is between 64 kbit and 384 kbit, depending on the distance to the mobile mast. However, during my initial testing I've found no issues streaming the songs using my 3G connection.
Fluid is fully skinnable. In the first release it will probably "just work". In the upcoming ones I will try to make it look good as well. Your idea of making it look like the regular Grooveshark is really good.
As for the beta testing; I'm no fan of closed beta testings. I will publish I alpha or beta release as soon as possible (maybe in a week or two), and anyone may download it and help me locate the bugs.

Streaming over HSDPA is really all I'm looking for Would be fantastic, although I'm not sure O2 would agree
If Fluid is skinnable, then it definitely looks as if it would be a very easy way to implement the Grooveshark interface.

I'm thinking of creating a local cache function, so that you don't need to stream the same song several times. The cache will however not make it into this first alpha release, and (for all you pirates out there) I will encrypt the local cache files to avoid downloading of songs.
After some struggling with Fluid it's clear to me that I need to look for other ways of building the UI. Fluid is too limited in it's default state, and changing it would take too much time.
I will build a simple but touch friendly UI for the first release. If anyone have some sample code for kinetic scrolling, please PM me or post the code in this thread. Thanks!

Of course the Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Toolkit comes with some great gesture samples, but you don't want to limit you application like that
Caching is a good idea, but definitely edging closer to "illegal" status
Is there any chance this will work on the smartphone (Standard) devices? Maybe it won't be too much of a work to make it work on non-touch screen devices since you are planing to make it simple.

Well, I will probably never release a smartphone version, but the application is very modular, and it would be easy for anyone to take the Grooveshark DLL and the music player DLL and build their own GUI.

The best things about Android 3.1

I figured this needs a new thread since the others have been derailed by people trying to update!
1) Speed, finally a speedup! The lockscreen is faster, switching apps is faster, the browser is faster (scrolling/zooming/flash video/scrolling with flash video open) , the launcher is faster... I could go on and on about how fast it is now.
2) Smooth 720p flash video playback
3) Mouse support, tried it out and it works great!
4) Joystick support is cool but no apps seem to support it yet, it doesn't show up as a general input device as I had hoped, you have to specifically program for the joystick api I believe.
5) Resizable widgets! Even this operation is silky smooth
6) Scrollable app switching
does it address the wifi driver leak? better yet, documentation or release notes on this update?
Nice post. Thanks for the information. I speak for nearly everyone who at this time hasn't received the update when I say I can't wait to get my hands on 3.1 on my rooted Xoom!
I, for one, am most excited about the following: resizable widgets, mouse support (btw - what kind of mouse are you using? bluetooth or usb/wired?), and most importantly the overall speed-up and bug fixes (such as smoother 720p video playback) across the entire Android Honeycomb OS.
Kudos to Google for knocking it out of the park with this one. Maybe nothing absolutely groundbreaking or super innovative, but all we really wanted anyway was a quality level of polish added to the amazing base OS we already had. That's what we're getting with 3.1. Yay.

It only works on list widgets, like the email and bookmark widgets. Hold down on the widget like you're going to move it and then set it back down.
For those who had tested 3.1 in their Xoom's, there is a improvement in 720p & 1080p video files?
I have the Asus Transformer and wondering about that stuff, since the Xoom owners are the first receiving 3.1

I've always only had the gallery app to play movies. The movie rental program is called 'videos'
Edit: Speaking of which, the Videos app has a 'Personal Videos' tab, which shows all of your videos in a nicer display than the gallery app... nice!

My List!
@Intratech: Do you already have a retail unit of GS3? Lucky guy
My list (maybe some options repeated in previous posts):
+ How does the phone feel in-hand? Any particular build issues? Some previews mentioned that the phone looks much better than in press photos. Example here
+ Browser performance, also how is Chrome performance.
+ TW performance. Any slowdown or issues?
+ Details on gestures. I know that there are a ton of gestures, do they work properly?
+ Screen comparison to GS2. Sunlight visibility.
+ Please upload photos in full resolution under various lighting conditions. Same for short video samples. Maybe you could upload that in google drive.
+ Social tag feature in camera/gallery. I am really interested to know how well this works. They can create wonderful commercial with this feature.
+ AllShare Play (I think it works like iCloud). Samsung uploaded a video about that feature here
+ Audio/Video player settings and performance. I noticed that the video gallery shows the previews of all videos stored. Does it impact the performance of the device while showing previews of multiple video at same time?
+ Check various codec it supports.
+ USB OTG and PS3 controller demo.
+ Camera settings. I think we need 2 devices to check buddy share.
+ S Beam will also need 2 devices. Does normal Android Beam work with GNex?
+ If you are getting the AllShare Cast dongle, please check if I can play a video on the TV while doing something else on the phone. How does pop-up play work with the AllShare dongle?
+ Try weird questions in the S Voice. Maybe also some geography/history questions. Shoot some trivia questions. Try launching applications with S Voice. Can it be used to type messages/email?
+ GPS/GLONASS performance. WiFi strength.
+ Difference between 4 colour/screen modes.
+ Gaming performance projected to a HDTV.
+ Background applications running after a fresh reboot.
No I don't have a retail unit as yet. I will get it once it's released to retail

Screencast/ Video-Audio Capturing

I was intrigued by the new Note II feature where it was demonstrated that you would be able to capture a video of you making markings using the S-Note while also having audio being captured.
My suspicion is that this feature (if ported to the note 10.1) will be limited to S-Note.
I have found other note making apps, namely Quill, to be lightyears ahead of S-Note in the design of their interface and in their taking advantage of the pressure sensitivity of the digitizer in this tablet. It would be completely ideal, for me, to be able to take video recordings of my note-taking using other such apps whilst having audio embedded. For example, it would be absolutely useful to have the ability to play back the process of taking notes in a lecture using Quill whilst having my teacher's voice embedded over the video.
What I would like to know is namely if anyone has tried out any apps such as "screencast" which allow such functionality? I have not rooted my device yet, so it is not possible for me to see if this app works well on this tablet. Otherwise, does anyone know of any apps besides screencast which serve the same purpose? And of course, speculation as to whether the new note II features (if ported) will allow screen/audio recording throughout the user interface is welcome in this thread.
Cheers,
And a note to the mods: While this post is posed in the form of a question, I feel it is more suited for general rather than Q&A because of the rather unspecific nature of the question and discussion it may promote with regard to a certainly sought after feature by many users.

To reemphasize, I am not so fond of S-Note as I am of other note taking apps, namely Quill, which is much more suited to the fast paced note-taking required for the course I am taking.

Thanks for this.
Just got around to watching this video, and it has me excited. Seeing as he initiated screen recording from his home page, I'm under the assumption that this will work throughout the interface. I do hope this makes it to the final release. For anyone time-pressed, he demos this feature at 2:40 in the video.
Alright, well a few months has passed and I have now flashed a JellyBean 4.1.2 rom. and as is probably evident to most... the screen recording feature didn't make it into the final version of JellyBean despite showing up in some of the leaked versions.
At any rate, since I have rooted the tablet, I went ahead and installed Screencast Video Recorder. It has worked phenomenally in most cases; however, just lately here some of the videos I have made will not play and seem corrupted in various ways (I suspect this may be because of having EZ Task Manager installed recently on my device, but I won't have made a video with it uninstalled yet until tonight.. so we'll see if that fixes things).
I was wondering: of those of you who use this app on the SGN 10.1 and have gotten it to work well, what settings do you use both within the app and within the system settings? Any other tips, such as avoiding installing certain apps or anything else you might suggest, for getting this amazing app to run optimally?

Hey - great Video.
I noticed something on 4.1.1 (and did not see it in your video). It took me for a spin-loop the first time: When downloading something fom the web (deafult browser) it does not save the file anymore to the internal (/mnt/sdcard/Downloads) - but instead to the external SD-card (I assume when one is present. I have not tried it without my externalSD yet.
Thanks again for the features.....
LOVENOTE10.1
One disappointing thing I have noticed in s note.
If you wish to have a custom background based upon an image it does not save that image as a template background for future sessions. You must go through the entire process each time. I prefer to write with a white pen on black lined paper. It would be nice if the background gallery would retain this option for me between sessions.
Also I do not see any way for us to custom design our own templates. Am I missing something? I can think of a number of layouts I would like which they do not offer by default.

Yeah, if its possibe, ideally enough so we can read the menu options, pause the video so we can see if anythings new or changed, generally a better view of everything, if its possible, i assume you do it this way because its easier, less fiddly not worrying about being out of camera, im assuming

If you save a blank note with the background you want, when you want to start a new note, open the orginal and "save as" before you start using it. The orginal "sort of" becomes a template. Kind of crude but faster than changing the background each time. I think the S-Note we have is going to be the S-Note we'll be living with for quite a while.

Now that there's a Windows version of S-Note they'd be smart if they published a SDK like they have for the S-Pen in general. The fact that syncing S-Note's to a Samsung account has been added might mean something's planned for the future.

I agree guys, they should at least have a section in the settings or somewhere in the app to request features or leave feedback. Especially since its not in any of the app stores.
Also I just signed into Samsung Apps and they're giving $20 coupons for learning hub to all users, not that I've seen anything in learning hub that interests me :/
Why isnt youtube avaliable inn multi view? It is on the note 2. Was kind of hoping.

Yes the note 2's multi-window is compatible with Google apps like chrome, youtube, gmail and talk. Hopefully we will get those options soon. I think they also have some social apps working like facebook aswell.
