[Q] newbie note4 owner - which ROM should I use? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just got my new Note4. I have to tell I was expecting much more out of it. I think it is slow and it lags from time to time. When I press contacts it takes about half second to open the agenda. And this lag is happening with other programs too. On top of this is full of apps I never use and I can not remove them. And I am not a big fan of Touchwiz.
In conclusion I want to make it faster with no bloatware. I read that a custom rom can help me.
I need a rom/firmware (or whatever the name is) that can do the following:
1. Make it faster, remove the lags. If this implies getting rid of Touchwiz I have nothing against it.
2. Remove the bloatware
3. Keep all the other functions: s-pen, hart rate, fingerprint scanner, bluetooth, gps.. . .
4. Be rock solid. As you probable noticed I am no specialist in android. I need a solution that will not need daily tinkering, research, experimenting etc.
5. I don't need Knox. If it have to be removed, I'm ok with that.
Here are my Note4 details:
Model number: SM-N910F
Baseband Version: N910FXXU1ANK4
Android version: 4.4.4.
I would very much appreciate any recommendations from you guys,
musca

See if there is a non carrier branded firmware available for your model and country at sammobile.
If there isn't is your device a Exynos or snapdragon?
Edit: just read your model number, snapdragon variant... I have no idea about custom roms as I have a Exynos.

This is in the wrong section, but you should try them all, everyone has different opinions. Cm12 will be very quick but you lose out on the touchwiz features like heart rate, fingerprint scanner etc. but there are also a number of touchwiz based ROMs. I'm happy with stock rooted touchwiz for now, hopefully the Lollipop update reduces the lag somewhat

Thanks Tom. Should I understand that there is no non-touchwiz ROM that have all the above mentioned features (hart rate, fingerprint)?

Check out Fire Kat in the tmobile note 4 section.

[Q] moving from iphone 5 to S4

ive had the iphone 5 for a while and im interesting getting the S4. i still have my S2 but i dont use it anymore. im wondering what are the pros of switching over? and which version should i get (i9500 or i9505)
Well considering your in the UK, your better off getting the I9505, then I9500 is for selected countries only so you either have import or risk buying of ebay ect, plus is you want to root, use custom roms or the Google Edition rom then the I9505 is the way to go.
Now the downsides if you don't plan to root or do anything with your S4, apart from using it stock & i'm guessing you want a simfree one, is that Samsung is slow to update simfree user's with the latest updates in the UK, Networks get priority first, while simfree gotta wait weeks before getting same update.
I gotta admit iphone 5 a good smartphone, it does what it does and does it well if you know what i mean.
As for the Pro's well that depends on you, your S2 isn't all that far behind the S4 software wise so all you be getting really is better specs, much better screen & Camera & lots of added Samsung Bloat such as air view ect.
9505 because of Google S4 edition, you get plenty of roms to choose from... and 9500 is USA version only, but you can of course find some in UK if you dig deeper...

Agree atm i9505 is the best chice due to the google experience edition
ok thats one part sorted (i9505).
now i just need to find out why the S4 would be better than the iphone 5. pros and cons of both.
ive read a few review but ten people in the comments complain about false or biased review so im lost.

Depends what your use it for. Personally for me the camera is important as I'm a tattooist it saves taking an extra camera I upgraded from s2 just for that reason although I will mess about with rooting etc in time. I compared loads of phones before upgrading, inc iphone 5 and the s4 just come out top but its personal preference

well there are the two obvious differences - the screen (bigger and higher resolution) and the operating system (android).

The i9500 is a little faster than the i9505. However, the difference is so small and you can feel it only with benchmarks...
The i9505 is based on Qualcomm Snapdragron S600 CPU. This helps developpers to bring stable alternative ROMs for it. The i9500 is powered by a Samsung procesor, and its documentation is so poor...this is why we still don't have CyanogenMod for it. The i9505 is also LTE capable so you can have a better mobile internet speed connexion depending on where do you live...
Finally, a Google Play version, called i9505G, is available in US store and it has the same hardware than the i9505. We have already a lot of ports of the Google Edition on classic i9505 and it will probably helps developers to build new roms...:good:
I got the i9505 now Thank s for your helps

I transitioned from IOS to Android myself with the S4 and found that the TouchWiz interface was counter-intuitive to the old IOS so I switched out the TouchWiz launcher for Go Launcher EX prime which gave a much better interface to use that was more akin to IOS.
Its very easy to root/swap roms & kernels etc so I'll give you the benefit of my experience:
The S4 has a big issue with charge / power. Its so powerful that it simply cant charge itself while your using it with anything less than 1000mA charge, this is most apparent in the car as a sat nav, or using the Samsung MHL out adapter for HDMI video on your TV. You can fix this easily by flashing a new kernel that support fast charge switching. I personally am using the Ktoonsez kernel.
The Samsung apps are all junk so to get rid of them grab a copy of wanamlites latest rom v1.4 and flash it using CWM. that will give you a stripped down, higher performing, latest version of the software with limited / no bugs.
The whole process takes about 20 minutes
Here is a guide to install CWM (do this first): http://androidtelegraph.com/guide-install-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s4-gt-i9505/
Then install wanamlites rom: http://wanamlite.com/2013/07/18/wanamlite-xxubmga-v1-4-android-jb-4-2-2-clean-stable/
Then the Ktoonsez kernel if you need the fast charge switch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379
Enjoy your new S4, you will never look back!

[Q] Worth uninstalling TouchWiz?

So first of all, please let me state the fact that I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to rooting and all that good stuff.
I want to ask if it is possible to get the stock Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
If it is possible, how can I do it and is it worthed?
Is losing all the S-Pen features and air wake-up and all that worthed to stay on a faster, stock Android?
Just find a launcher you like and use that. Rooting just to get rid of TouchWiz is overkill. There are great reasons to root, but that isn't one of them.
I couldn't find any good reason to root the Note 4 so far.
ad blocking, and full sd access are good reasons, among others
Definetly worth flashing stock lollipop get rid of the awful awful lag. This phone is a beast when it comes to lag. Suppose I've been bit spoilt using nexus 6 for the last 2 months which is supper smooth and fast.
However unforunately there is no stock lollipop ROMs to flash for this phone so you are stuck with crappy TW.

Going with AOSP Lollipop is definitely possible. It's great. Looks great. Runs without lag. However, if you own any Samsung wearable like the VR or a Gear 2, or if you use the Spen features then you do not want to use AOSP roms. Samsung baked compatibility into TouchWiz instead of supporting Android so you lose it if you switch.
Note that the Spen can serve basic scrolling and tapping depending on the Kernel you have installed but it is very limited.
Here is what it comes down to.
If you use any TW features or Samsung products with the Note 4 then don't switch.
If you don't use any TW features or Samsung products with the Note 4 then make the switch.
Some Note 4 compatible Lollipop Roms I have used and like are
SlimLP
CM12
Liquid Smooth
Buy a nexus 6 if u don't like TouchWiz or spen then y buy a note other phones with 2k display and 805 snapdragon

Suggest me a ROM and Kernel please

I will probably get my newly ordered Note 4 (N910G) tomorrow, and I want to go straight to business with a good ROM and kernel. I was using Arya Mod on Note 3 and it was an excellent ROM, full with features, but more importantly based on stock, and that's what I am looking here too, completely based on official stock firmware but with features added, features like Priority sender, Delayed message timer for stock messaging app, no gap for the notification toggle area etc., anyone who has used Arya will know what I am talking about. So if there is a ROM like that please do suggest me. I don't/won't change ROM often, so it has to be stable as hell too.
And a kernel also please. Stability is the key factor here too, but next preference is performance, I don't care about batter life at all, so total smoothness (can't stand micro jitters) is the target here and if possible then features like Touch2Wake etc. are welcome. I used a kernel called Shinto on my Note 3 and it was butter smooth with Precognition governor, just so you know.
So please, shoot me.
PS: The ROM has to be Deodexed, cause I will use Xposed.

I can't suggest anything, but here's what I want to share....
Samsung is making his device complicated (from what I see)....
If you try to compare from Note2 up to Note 4, samsung is trying to classify its device into country /region (due to network frequency or any other reason). And Note 4 has more different models compare to Note 2 and Note 3.
and if you notice, each model got fewer custom ROM (if you try to compare with earlier device).
This is my reason why I never root and change into custom ROM, and only after almost 1 year, then I decide to root to play with my note 4.
If you are a TW lover just like me, you will find very few ROM and/or kernel available for snapdragon G series.
So, ...
with a very few ROM/kernel, I think it will be good for you to try it one by one and find the one suit u better.
Cheers,
Thanks. I flashed a very popular ROM but unfortunately it doesn't have what I need, the Delayed sending option in Stock messaging app. I need that option very badly.
Could anyone please tell me whether there is a custom ROM based on stock purely which has that feature enabled?

SM-N9005, need some help with custom rom.

Good day everybody,
More than a year has passed since my dad's phone (note 3) warranty has expired. I would like to improve my dad's Galaxy Note 3 by flashing a custom rom. I believe it is a snapdragon model so it shouldn't be hard? The thing is he uses the camera, s-pen, gps, bluetooth,4g pretty often and a degradation in any of these features would be a big nope for him which would result in reflash back to stock 5.0, now the good thing (maybe) is that he does not need the the big variety of customisation features. After some research I found two possible options, lineageos 14.1 or Resurrection Remix N 5.8.4, these might be the most recent(best) choices?
Which one would be better for his use? I, in no way intend to bash on any of these roms, just trying to find the one.
Version: N9005XXUGBOJ1
Also, what would be the best option to save photos/contacts and transfer them to the custom rom?
Thank you

Resurrectin Remix nor Lineage OS have the s-pen features as they are close to pure stock (S-Pen is more of a Touchwiz thing), so I recommend a Note 7 port (but I would test GPS right away since there might be a problem with a custom ROM and the GPS signal)
As for photos, I recommend Google Drive. For contacts, sync them up with the Google account.

I forgot to mention that he doesn't use the features, the pen is only needed for typing and browsing the phone, he prefers that way. I, lets say, choose lineageos, will the phone recognize the pen for this simple usage?
AFAIK, pen functionality requires a stock ROM or a custom ROM based on a stock ROM.
Stick with stock rom .You are going to get less comeback.

Yep the spen is recognized
I've installed the rom and so far it runs without flaws, battery could be better.

What is the best custom rom for Samsung Note 4 (N910C) in 2019?

I'm looking for the best Exynos compatible ROM for this old phone now. I would like to retain full S-Pen functionality without having to pay for it. Google tells me there's some paid apps that add S-Pen features to roms that don't come with it, but I don't want to go down that route.
Any suggestions?
NEMESIS REFINED V3.8.5 N7 Port. By far my all time fav ; )
Can't speak about the Refined Nougat N7FE Port 5.6 [EOL] because I simply can't let go of my REFINED V3.8.5...it's too good!
All Note 4 features work, S-Pen, and Camera etc, fast and stable Rom.
Is there a rom that has ALL Spen features? I'm getting a Note 4 soon and want to root but don't want to lose the functionality.

Refined Nougat N7FE Port 5.6 is by far the best. You can't compare it to older versions. The speed and battery life is amazing. Its super stable, it has all spen features, audio works well for me. Go for it bud. You won't be disappointed

My brother and my mom and I all run the same model Verizon Note 4. Mine ended up getting an update that bricks the memory the CPU uses to save its state when it goes into sleep mode. Had to grab an app to force Partial Wake Lock so it doesn't touch that memory. Software fixes can't help at this point since it damaged the physical memory. More stuff broke so this time I'm switching ROMs out the gate so I don't get hit with the same hardware damaging firmware.

You might be onto something there.
I never had any problems with my unlocked n910c until one day when after a software update the ir blaster stopped working.
I tried everything to make it work again, but with no success.
After some time another update came in and it was functioning again. I was so happy. Everything was perfect again.
But then after a while I was stupid enough to install another software update and this time the blaster went missing for good.
I still miss it sometimes...
