[Q] Phone won't turn on after Flash with Odin - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was looking into rooting my Galaxy S5 and I saw a thread here that would help me through the process. After I flashed the G900VVRU1ANE9 Retail tar, The phone would not turn on. Odin displayed "PASS!" but the phone will not turn on. I have no idea what went wrong. Does anybody have an idea about what went wrong?

Have you tried removing then reinserting the battery then try to power it on?

different person, similar problem
and yes I tried that. tried volume ups and downs and all that too.
i ... started ****ing with my external SD card attempting to get it to mount as swap memory, hold app storage, etc, but, apparently safestrap depends on the external sd card .. and now i don't get s.h.i.t. all black and dark and scarry.
sorry, impulse post amid 30 tabs.

battery pull then try to get it in to download mode (home/vol down/power). It might take a few tries.

Don't Try to Partition with Rom Manager.

If You try to partition with Rom manager it partitions the internal sd and you will brick your phone. Your screen will be black with only the capacative buttons glowing. This brick is possibly the more annoying ones where you have to flash your phone twice. If you have this problem don't panic like i did.
*REMOVING EXTERNAL SD CARD MIGHT IMPROVE ODIN CHANCES OF WORKING*(Thanks Hoey2011 for mentioning this)
Step 1: Download all files from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
PUt them in a safe spot you will need them for later.
Step 2: Download files from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740558
Step 3: HAVE ODIN OPENED FIRST!!(This helped it detect my phone for some reason)Get phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is pull out battery from phone. Then plug phone into usb connected to computer it will have the battery sign. Hold volume keys and power button when the screen goes black let go of power button. You will be in download mode if Odin doesn't detect it unplug usb and replug it.
Step 4: Once Odin has recognized your phone set the pit file and .tar file FROM EUGENE'S 2.2 THREAD. NOT THE FIRST LINK THE SECOND LINK. Then click start. And follow all the directions on his thread.
Step 5: Once you have flashed that rom you put your phone in download mode again and set up the pit and .tar file for Stock 2.1. After you finish flashing it your phone should be saved!
Thanks to Eugene373, justanothercrowd and anomalous3(for being patient and helping me out when I had this problem) And to anyone else that helped me solve this problem.
Thanx for being the guinea pig. Glad you got it back working.
Yea It was a ***** tho. Spent at least 4 hrs fixing it. But glad its working
Wow that sucks well thanks for the write up.
I was in the same boat as you and as I was downloading 2.2 to try I found your thread. Works like a charm! Thanks for the info on this. I guess I shouldn't read threads backwards from now on, huh?
ok so I've been following this method, and got eugene's 2.2 loaded up correctly, and rebooted back into download mode. The 2.2 files loaded just fine through odin, but now that I'm flashing 2.1, it seems hung on the cache.rfs.
I am gonna go smoke a blunt or two and come back and see how it's progressed, but this hang is the same issue I had before, on my windows 7 64bit machine. I figured it was a compatibility problem so I'm using my old busted vista machine. I've gotten further on the vista laptop than the W7 one, but I'm still hung.
How long should the 2nd loadup take??
I am almost at my wits end with this stupid mistake I made and hope is such a far stretch
ok, so i continued my use of the search tool here at xda and found my answer
I had my MicroSD card in my phone, hadn't even thought to remove it. I have moved past the cache.rfs file and am now waiting to see the results....
IT WORKED OMG OMG OMG
Xda forums almost ruined my phone, then brought it back from the dead
god i love equlibrium
Good info thanks for posting it, but one thing I would like to point out and I am not alone in feeling this way people are throwing the.word brick around and far to casually. You did not brick your phone by partitioning it the proof is that you fixed your phone. Bricking a phone is wheb youbrender the phone usless as a brick when it is totally broken and unfixable. I dont mean to nitpick i just hate seeing everyone that makes a mistake in anything crying wolf and claiming to have bricked. But my rant aside thanks for the very usefull info you mightvwanna pass it on to koush so he can fix it.

I did exactly this and I was so frustrated that I sent my phone back to tmobile and just purchased a new one. I don't know about yall but if there are two storage points (internal and external) there should be an option for both in default recovery because when I tried to partition the external sd card *in which i was able to execute on my nexus one* it was very easy but because I use clockwork recovery and did a rom backup, i guess the backup zip wasn't safe because I received the same results as you. There should be 2 options to choose from that says *internal storage, External SD Card* why make things difficult? lol
The manufacturers need to be a little more intuitive.
*this is my opinion*

Ah crap, that's right, /sdcard is mapped to the *internal* sd card on the phone, and that's what is partitioned. I'll disable partitioning on the phone (external SD card is not accessible in recovery).

I haven't tried partitioning, but the card's /dev/block/mmcblk1p* entries are there and I can mount them. That's how the dc2ext hack works. It mounts /sd-ext and /data to do the copies and it does it in recovery.

I have had serious issues with Odin hanging on my WIn 7 32bit system. However, I think I was actually doing it wrong. I was booting my phone to download mode then plugging it in to my computer. However, I have had continued success (tried a bunch last night) by doing this:
Open Odin, take out the battery, plug in USB cord to phone and computer, hold vol up+down, put in battery. Whenever I booted into Download Mode this way, Odin worked perfect every time. Turns out after cursing my computer it was user error, whoops .

turns out, the system wasn't the finicky piece of equipment, it was the phone and the odin software. I inadvertently left the sd card in the phone, the external one, and that was causing my hangs. Two more tries after pulling the sd card, I had success and was back to my phone again

YEa I guessed as much thats why I was trying not to "flame" and to be informative you are a victim of exactly what I am talking about. Because so many people throw around the word brick anytime anything goes wrong not only is it losing its meaning but people are also getting confused.
This does work, it took me about 7 hours last night to fix it.
I will say if it does not work then keep trying.
My flash kept freezing on the froyo rom and would not finish, so I actually had to try and flash the full captivate stock rom (search the captivate forum) it froze but afterwords it let me go throught the whole flash process with Eugenes 2.2 rom, then flashed right back to 2.1 no prob.
I will also say that if you are on a x64 system then go find a x86 (32 bit) system. I dont know why but it just works better.
So if it doesnt work then do this:
1. Make sure you are on a 32 bit system.
2. Flash a Full Rom from the Captivate forum. (It has a more to it I believe, changes the system maybe?)
3. If it freezes that is ok. Flash the 2.2 rom. (might need to do it a couple times)
4. After successful flash then go to stock.
This needs a sticky!!!!!!!!!
I just did this. Wish I would have seen this thread first!
I'm having a really hard time getting to download mode. Read all the threads I could find on it.
Any ideas? Download mode isn't removed when partitioning with rom manager is it?
I'm trying not to freak out...

After fighting with it I found out this worked best for me:
Battery out
Plug in USB cord to the phone and PC
Hold Vol up and down
Put the battery in
Phone should boot right into download mode.
Also, I found you should have Odin open FIRST before you do this. If I didn't I would have constant issues with Odin hanging.

Bricked-Unable to Re-install Packages

greetings...i've read far too many threads on not being able to boot into "recovery" and "download" and haven't found anything to fix me...
i can successfully get into "recovery" but when i try to reinstall the packages it starts to run a recovery with Clockworkmod etc...it stops and reboots into recovery...this will go on and on...
now when i try to boot into "download" i can't, i've tried many methods none work.
any help?

sweet...well, not sweet...PM me if you find a fix: i'll do the same, i have a replacement on the way via t-mobile.
for the record, i've successfully gotten in to download mode and used Odin to get back to factory...twice, once for fun and once for resurrection...i don't know what went wrong, except while nandroiding maybe i backed up a bogus recovery rom before i flashed. i can't get past Vibrant, and i don't even see the battery recharge display either when i usb, i'm letting the battery run down to try and get to the green battery icon to try a "download" mode??? i've read of a move while you see the charging screen but i haven't been able to get there... oh well, live and learn. i am also searching for a way to boot from the removable sd card that has a system or recovery rom on it..nothing yet.
also, i've read people discussing newer models being blocked from download...well like i said i've done this with this phone before but i got a new SIM last week and this is the first attempt with the new SIM???? maybe a coincidence...
take battery out, plug in usb to pc, hold vol up n down, replace battery, boom download mode.

yes(but i'm over saturated right now, i might have missed something) ...i'm dead in the water, i can't get to the point of anything seeing my device...my computer won't see it except as unknown usb device, no partitions show up, adb doesn't recognize it in any way...maybe i'm a [email protected], but i don't see anyway to flash it without at least getting in to download mode, or somehow pushing a .zip at the sd for a recovery??? technically figuring out that stuff is beyond my remaining brain cells...this seems like a dicey way for the phone to rely on when restoring to factory.... it would be nice to have the device look at All available partitions, internal/removable, for a recovery system or have an altogether different sd in the phone for a -R dedicated recovery volume....don't know, i'm a noob at this android stuff sooo....

[Q] So my Acer will not boot after the ICS update

I had the 3.2.1 and I used the script to turn backdoor on and also OTA updates back on. My Acer is rooted but stock rom. It saw the ICS update and downloaded and rebooted and I got the android guy with the gears turning and that progress bar went all the way and it looked like it rebooted again.
Now it is stuck at the "Android" name...usually its a black screen with a few seconds of that Android screen popping up then going back to black and it never progresses...i've tried rebooting. Anyone else having this issue?

Actually it's been so long since I have done that I don't remember how..power button and vol down or something? I didn't ask that cause I know it can be easily found just been running around this morning so haven't had time to check it out. Sucks..didn't think i'd have an issue due to being on a stock rom
EDIT: Yes just tried it...it booted into recovery I believe..shows the android guy laying on his back with his stomach opened and a red triangle with an exclimation point
This may be posted somewhere but what app do I need to use to get my tablet back and running from recovery mode?
im in da same boat as you.......i need a downgrade or something!!
Me too. I have an image file, but cannot get it onto the tablet. Can someone tell me how I can use a PC to get an update.zip file onto the tablet so I can get it working again? I can get into recovery, but do not have a zip file to select from. I have an old SD card from a DX that I just got rid of for a Galaxy Nexus, but I do not have the phone anymore. I have a card reader, but cannot get windows to recognize the card. If I can get widows to recognize the card reader, I can get the zip file and transfer it that way. Please help???

Me too this sucks
I'm trying to follow directions on how to unbrick from other threads but they all mentions doing things on the tablet that I can't access because my tablet won't do anything at all. When I boot into recovery mode it gives me no options at all and my pc cannot see any of my files/drives on my tablet so how do you guys even do anything with it?

Do you need help getting into recovery?
Power Off, hold in landscape so your volume buttons are on the upper left. Hold the volume + and power button for a few seconds, when the 'ACER' logo comes up, let go of the power button and keep the volume+ until you are into recovery.
I'm going to have to borrow a phone on Monday from someone to get the image file onto an old Droid X SD card I have and hope that solves my problem.
I fought with ACER customer support for an hour. Because I bought it on WOOT, they have the tablet registered to some other company and are telling me it is not in warranty.

Hmm for me the power button and volume - button puts it into recovery but the problem is it doesn't give me any options but shows the android character laying down with a red triangle above him. I don't have any options like I do when I go into recovery on my infuse phone. I still have a warranty as my tablet was purchased in December but I'd really rather not have to send it out :-/
When you go into recovery you have options?
And that sucks about the warranty situation...that's messed up
A500 wont boot after ICS update
I have the same issue. ACER logo comes on then Android then it goes blank, flashes and seems stuck in a loop.
Trying to go into recovery does not work and you get the android down with a red triangle above its chest. It looked like it was looking for update.zip which was not on the SD card or external SD card. Not sure if it looked at both.
Please Help

Yes. Exactly what happens with mine. Do we need to load an update.zip onto the sd card and then try recovery or would it only search on the internal memory? If that is indeed what it is trying to do.

Nope...put update.zip on root of external sd..looked like it was updating and then a configuring screen popped up and then rebooted and now its back to the same loop again
The only thing u can think of is to make sure the screen orientation switch is locked in landscape (towards the left) when gilding it landscape.

If the OTA was successful it should tell you, so we will assume you're still on the HC b/l.
If you cannot boot to the OS or Recovery AND the update.zip method doesn't work THEN
Use TD's V4 if your original build is gen2 OR
a EUU package from vaches thread to recover your tab
If you can boot to recovery then restore from backup

yep i used td's backdoor/rootkeeper the first time i got the same result as you.
took a couple of tries but finally i'reverted to 3.01 and then OTA'ed up to 3.2.1
i did the following to get it to work
1) make sure backdoor is on, check sound is off - i had to run it twice before sound turned off
2) run busybox and backed up su location
3) run rootkeeper
4) opened acer recovery installer and loaded up stock recovery
5) and enabled the option in settings just to make sure and rebooted
6) checked system update and yes i have a new update
all four OTA's installed fine, i did lose root tho but opened backdoor and reset sticky bits
opened ari once again and got superuser request for access
loaded up cwm and booted into recovery and got recovery verified failed message. i had forgotten to uncheck the load stock recovery option in settings.
once i did that i was back to cwm
yeh it was a bit of a process and once i get the ICS OTA - i'll save it before installing - just for future possible borks - then put stock recovery back unroot b4 trying the OTA install - with any luck i should be ok....
Can you explain better what you did.
I over the air updated my tablet. And now am in the loop.
I do not have an update.zip. How do I recover to any version of android.
I had back door on.

Am I Soft Bricked?

Long story so please bear with me. I have a Sprint I9505. I had installed a rom which made me lose mobile data and I eventually called Sprint to help me restore it. I of course did not mention that They did a great job of helping me but one of the things that they made me do was a hard reset. I did so and went about going through the process of re-configuring my phone but it will not let me get past the wi-fi set-up screen because the wi-fi will not turn on. So that's where I am stuck. I rebooted into recovery mode and see that I still have CMW installed but it will not read my external 64g card nor will it let me mount it. My intent was to restore a nandroid back-up that I had made prior to installing the rom that gave me the issues. But no luck. I have my phone next to me and although it is not going past the wifi set up screen, I still hear my phone vibrate and the screen turns on so I assume that I'm still receiving notifications. I tried to install the I9505 firmware and go back to stock but it fails everytime with about 10 percent to go. I tried to download the firmware for Sprint but it gives me a download error after completion (I assume that it is a PC issue not a firmware issue). So I'm assuming that I'm not totally screwed since I can still get into recovery mode. I'm in a bit of a time crunch since I'm going out of the country Saturday and would like a working phone before then. Thanks to all of you in advance for any help that you can provide.

Try to flash the stock firmware + .pit file for your phone using Odin
Thanks, I'm the process of downloading the Sprint firmware from a different link from my previous one to see if that works or if it's my PC.

Sigh most wifi and data issues from roms come from a kernel issue never hard reset with faulty connections you should of imediately went into recovery and flashed the nandroid some roms arent out of the oven yet i would put that card in a card reader see if you can copy the nandroid and push it to the phones internal storage (if all possible) and see if it will boot off of that if not see if you can get the ruu

this is Galaxy S4 my friend

[SOLVED] HELP! Phone stuck in odd loop after boot

I'm on NCG odexed stock, rooted with nova launcher + xposed framework/wanam
Today, I rebooted my phone and was presented with an odd scenario: The phone was looping between my homescreen (black background) and the Galaxy S5 blue geometrical wallpaper (I think I left the TW launcher with the default grassy picture). That's all the phone does - cycle between the two - and I cannot get a screen to stay up long enough to do anything. Of course, I don't have ADB authorized for any of my machines (haven't had the chance to use it yet) and I can't do much of anything. I tried safe mode, emergency call, camera, clear cache via stock recovery, and adb sideload to try and get SOMETHING to run. Unfortunately it seems I'm locked out of my device...does anybody have a suggestion that would allow me to get the data off the internal storage before wiping? >.<
Added video of issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_mncUueCJ8
Edit: Solved the issue through the most scientific methods; insanity and brute force! The phone would boot sometimes with the lock screen in the rotation, and those boots allowed me a brief window of touch interaction which I used to enable emergency mode, which fixed my immediate problem of being locked out and allowed me into an adb root shell. Hurrah.
Thanks all,
Overkill

I would suggest you download the stock tar and odin, pull the battery and put it in download mode and odin back to stock. So long as you can get to download mode you should be fine.

Already in progress But the stock tar also flashes over any user data, correct?

Absolutely you will be returning to out of the box stock. But it's a good failsafe. Then you can start to play with it all over again

Right The problem is, there are files I need to get from the device before I do that!

If the files are on the external sd card you are golden. That doesn't get formatted. If not ... It will take someonen with more expertise than me on the issue.

Well, I let the phone run for the last 45 minutes and eventually the phone rebooted itself and the system UI immediately crashed. I'm going to wait for the next crash and see if I have any luck with not pressing ok when this happens, and using that opportunity to allow ADB, which would solve my problem In the meantime, assuming that my hopes and dreams will be crushed, if anybody with ninja hacker skills has any suggestions, I'm all ears (or is it eyes?)

I wasn't able to do this, presumably because com.android.systemui is responsible for this dialog and when it restarts, the problem restarts with it.
what's strange is that i can see my device on windows but the internal storage doesn't mount when the device shows up >.<
would i be able to flash just the systemui.apk and framwork.res files to stock using odin?
EDIT: Was able to get the device into emergency mode after much spamming of buttons and trial/error; this stops the problem I'm having, and I was able to get into ADB. The problem is most likely with Xposed, I'll be able to troubleshoot from here =) Basically, I had a brief window of laggy but responsive touchscreen interaction once out of every 10 boots which I used to get emergency mode enabled (lots of checkboxes) and this worked. It was either xposed or nova or a combination of the two, but it appears that I'm able to hack at it from here xD
