Hi,
I've just picked a new Galaxy S5 G900F, upgraded it to Android 5.0 using Kies and then migrated data from my old Galaxy S3 using Samsung Smart Switch Mobile.
The device is unrooted and everything seems to be working ok however when I look at storage I have
System memory 4.30GB
Used Space 3.70GB
Cached Data 153MB
Miscellaneous files 5.15GB
Available space 2.70GB
If I look in Miscellaneous files there is less than 70mb of files listed. What else is taking up the space?
If I use the app DiskUsage then it shows 'System Data' as being 5207MB which is presumably the same as Miscellaneous files.
If I list installed and system apps by file size there is nothing that adds up to that kind of size. There are minimal photos, videos and music on the device.
Any suggestions as to what is using all of the space and how to free it up?

On my rooted 4.2.2 Settings, Internal storage shows 27GB/7,6GB free. When I count the apps, videos, ... I'll get about 14GB consumption. Where might be that missing 6GB be?
Set aside for the system partition.
Sent from my Nexus 10
Mine shows fine on Android 4.3 . @trickster2369 System partition is a separate partition from Data, so I believe it doesn't is in the count . By the way, are you sure you counted everything right? Try installing a file manager to check some folders, I have 10.8GB in "Misc.", probably you didn't see this one or it didn't appear .
All the best,

Heya guys,
yesterday, I found that I was in dire need of some more free space on my GT-I9505's internal storage and found that only the contents of /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails were taking up space. After a while of trying to get rid of those files that kept creating themselves again, I followed some advice I read on an Android forum: I deleted the contents of the .thumbnail folder, went to Settings -> Apps and cleared the data of the Gallery and Media Storage apps, respectively, before rebooting the phone.
The contents did disappear for good, but neither Total Commander nor the list of installed apps in the settings nor the Storage summary in the settings showed any different amount of free space than before. To make matters worse, the number didn't even change after I found and deleted about 1 GB of files left by an already uninstalled app, i.e. it seems to be stuck on that value. At the same time, SD Maid tells me that I should have a good 5 GB of free space more than the system is showing. Neither restarting nor wiping the cache and dalvik cache helped.
My rooted GT-I9505 is running this unofficial port of AOKP 4.3, Milestone 1, and version 6.15.6 of PhilZ/CWM Advanced. I'm not sure whether there's more information I might need to provide, other than that the size of the thumbnails files apparently exploded (about 4 GB) when I moved quite a lot of data and obb folders to my external storage using FolderMount.
I didn't find any information about this kind of problem anywhere and am afraid I messed up so badly that I might need to reflash...or worse. Do you have an idea how I can try to fix it?

This will always be in the sdcard and sdcard/DCIM

Thank you for your reply. However, the .thumbnails folder is empty since I deleted its content, cleared the data of the Gallery and Media Storage apps and rebooted as I described in my original post...so apparently, it will not always be there but still take up the space if you mess something up as I did.
Since then, the amount of free space seems to be stuck at the value from before the deletion of the .thumbnails contents, even though I deleted other, considerably large amounts of files since then as well, which should have freed up some more space. That can't be healthy for any kind of storage.
Some error in the file system, perhaps? Maybe some part of the OS keeps the space allocated but forgot what it was allocated for because I cleared the Gallery and Media Storage apps' information about it along with the data? I do not know, neither do I know how to fix it, and I'm getting increasingly worried.

no, it's from the rom, every rom will appear .thumbnail
Cache images on the gallery
All will be stored in .thumbnail
I do not know how to fix this :/

So you're saying it's controlled by the rom and Media Storage and Gallery merely use system functions or the like to create and manage those thumbnail files? I see, thanks for that information.
I assume that means I'm humped. After all, I made those two apps forget that they told the rom to allocate the space, which the rom apparently still is doing...
I guess I'll try if reflashing the rom will help, but I most probably won't have the time for that for a week or two. Until then, I'd be more than happy and thankful to hear more ideas.
Phone is using Jelly Beans custom rom v5
Android Base 4.3
Baseband is: N900VVRUBMJE
I am having a serious issue where System Storage is showing less space available than there is
On ES Explorer it shows:
I have a 64GB memory card in the phone and it has 18GB free
Internally of the 32GB I have 11GB free.
However, when I go to the Storage option it shows that I only have 1.25GB free on my internal card. This number goes to 200mb when Google Drive is installed:
Applicatiuons-2.71gb
Picutres,videos 424mb
Why is there such a massive discrepancy? Anyone have any idea how I can fix this? When I open Miscellaneous files it says System Memory 28GB then Whatsapp 749MB and Canon CW 650MB. Ok lets say I delete that but where is the other 28GB? See Misc files below. It has to be reading incorrectly in someway since my file apps show a lot more data free.
Google Drive shows 832mb used - in the app it says max cache size 50mb. All I can think is that I uploaded a 800mb video file to my drive from my phone and now its downloading this. I deleted the cache but when I start the drive back up it goes back to 800mb
Hello I have the Nexus 4 16GB, I am currently running the latest version of the great Euphoria ROM.
The problem I am having is that I have very little free space left. After clean flashing (multiple times) the Euphoria ROM, I am left with about 3.4 GB of free space. After using the Disk Analyzer to see what is taking up so much space, I find that "system data" takes up about 7GB.
Is all this normal? Can someone recommend what I can do to free up more space if possible? I really don't want to have to buy another phone.

I would suggest installing Titanium Backup if you have not already. From the main screen, there is a section that says: "System ROM" and has the size and Free Space and Internal+Media with that size and free space as well. If you press it, it will pull up a break down of the App size, Data Size, and Cache Size of every installed app. You can then just click any offenders with huge Data or Cache sizes, and wipe them. I know Download Manager tends to store a lot of data which you can clear, as does Chrome, and Facebook.
Thank you, I used Titanium backup and was able to free up a significant amount of space. But it still seems like all my apps and media files don't add up to so much space. When I run the Disk Usage app (downloadable from the play store), it still says that "system data" takes up about 7GB while my apps and media together take up about 3GB, and I have another 3GB of free space remaining.
I tried clearing the davlik and cache (using TWRP) and still the "system data" takes up 7GB. I really wonder if that is right. I'm wondering if I should save all my data externally and do a complete wipe (format data in twrp?) and reinstall the ROM, but I am nervous to brick my phone, I have never done the "format data" option in TWRP before.
Hi, after saving my important files externally, I decided to flash back to stock lollipop. Then I flashed Euphoria rom and load back my apps and files. It appears to have solved the issue. The "system data" is now a much smaller size and I have nearly 7 GB of free space, and that is after adding much more media files to the device. Not sure what caused the original problem, but now it appears to be fixed and has saved me over $200 in buying a new phone with more disk space.

Sweet, glad you were able to get it sorted.
My device is a 9506. Some updates today failed because it said I am out of space on the device's internal 16gb drive. I am on 5.0.1. and not rooted. As of now, system memory is 4.20gb, used space is 4.05gb, cached data is 3.41gb, misc. files is 3.29gb and available space is 1.05gb. How do I regain space? Delete apps? Clear or remove some things (which)? Move some apps to the external SD? I am kind of at a standstill now.

Moving photos, videos and music to the external SD is enough sometimes.
I had moved all that stuff already. In the end, I removed a couple of apps I don't use and used SD Maid Pro to clean up a bunch of app caches and it cleared almost 3 gigabytes. So all is well now. Is there a way to change to PIT file like I could on my old S2? That was a very good solution.
