[Q] Software update on rooted Samsung Galaxy Note 4 - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone
I have Samsung Galaxy Note 4, model SM-N910.
I just rooted the phone using CF-Auto-Root. It did trip knox the device.
I haven't installed a new rom, and I'm just running Nova launcher and a couple of modules with exposed installer.
Yesterday there was a Samsung OTA which I wanted to download, but it failed as soon as it was trying to reboot the phone....
My Question is.. Its it possible to update the original software on my device without ruining the root access?
Kind regard
NIkolaj

You have to update through odin & cannot update through mobile. Also you have to re-root

[Q]i9500 from 4.2.2 to 4.3

Hi Guys
Yesterday i got my Galaxy Gear, and i'm ready to make it shine. I have a Stock Non-rooted i9500 Galaxy S4 on 4.2.2 and need to update to 4.3 to use the Gear Manager. The only thing i got is Nova Launcher and a bunch of apps.
OTA has not arrived, so i suppose i should update via Kies? How can i do this? Which Baseband version is the newest and safe to use in 4.3. I have I9500UBUBMG9 on 4.2.2.
I primarily use a Mac but can use a Windows PC. Do i lose my info if i update via Kies? Please any guide, tutorial etc. Don't want to damage my S4. I will search the forums, but your help would be greatly appreciated!
:good:
do you care about warranty??
Just download gear manager from Samsung app and it will work fine with 4.2.2... I have used a year on s4 on 4.2.2 without a problem.. Try it

No, not really. I don't care about warranty.
What's the easiest, safest way to update? I've been reading something about Knox, and voiding the warranty, but i have a i9500 and not a i9505.

Nope, it doesn't work. I have Gear Manager installed and it says:
"Unable to connect to the Gear. Connecting to the Gear is not supported by your mobile device, or your software needs to be updated. Check that your mobile device is able to connect to the Gear, then update your mobile device software"

What exactly do you want mate?
If you flash the official firmware agaim you'll be able to upgrade your phone via kies or get OTA updates.
If you install a custom rom, you wont be able to get anything and in addition burn the knox efuse.
Plus we, at XDA wont recommend you one. You have to search for yourself which rom fits your requirements the best. Each rom has something unique.
Check the developers thread, read about the bugs and fixes and then we think you are wise enough to decide on your own
Press Thanks if I helped

Possible to re-root?

Hi,
I had to send in my S4 (rooted with Loki) to Samsung to replace the screen. I'm assuming they restored to factory default and then flashed to latest 4.4.2. Is it possible to odin back to an earlier Android version and root my phone again or am I stuck with stock now?

You can't Odin back but you can root. Do you know what version of 4.4.2 you're on, nb1, nc1, or nl1?

edit: found out answer to my own questions. Sucks that Samsung updated my phone and now I'm stuck with safestrap.

You can only install safestrap as the recovery. You'll be able to flash touch wiz based roms and a couple of Google play addition. See in the general forum, index all things at&t....

For those rooted with Loki+Motochopper I would suggest buying your own NEW screen and replacing then. Better than being locked down tight and not have full control of your own personal device. Sorry to hear about being updated... But your post made me decide what I would do if/when my screen goes out or glass breaks

I sent mine to a phone repair website and they did some JTAG magic stuff and downgraded mine to 4.2, which is what it came with when I got it. I don't recall the website, but if you search around I'm sure you'll find something. It cost about $50.

[Q] Galaxy s4 in a weird Not-Rooted/Rooted state

I recently rooted my Galaxy S4 using the Towel Root method. but a week ago or so while driving ATT forced an update and updated to the new version. The problem is I do not have Root active, but I can't use certain apps due to getting a message saying that they can't be used on a Rooted device. I am not sure how to remove this odd state I am in. Has anyone had this issue and know how to remove it?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S4
Carrier: AT&T
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version 4.4.2
Build Number: KOT49.I337UCUFNI1

What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

You would have to Odin the nb1 tar file, it's the only version that exists. Then ota to 4.4.4, nj4. Any version of Odin works. It will wipe your device and you'll have to start over setting it up.

If you are rooted, I think you can use an app called mobile Odin to flash stock FWs. This app was developed by chainfire. What I don't know is if you can use it to go from kit kat to lollipop.
Thanks is there a way to root the phone without a computer I was able to on my note 3.
